Ford's New 5.0-liter V-8 Debuts in the 2011 Mustang GT

Ford's New 5.0-liter V-8 Debuts in the 2011 Mustang GT

Ford's all-new 5.0-liter (302 cubic-inch) V-8 is finally official. Yay! For now, it's only confirmed for the 2011 Mustang GT but all signs still firmly point to the 5.0 replacing the 4.6-liter V-8 and 5.4-liter V-8 engines in the F-150 by 2011.

Inside the Mustang's engine bay, the 5.0-liter V-8 is rated at 412 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and produces a very respectable 390 pounds-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm.

Does it come with the official hood scoop ornament that does nothing?

Max hp is achieved at 6500. Red line is at 7K.

@Panther: Where did you see the 6,500 rpm figure? On the spec sheet for the 5.0, it's 7,000 rpm.

Tis a great day indeed.

412hp at 6500rpm
390lb-ft at 4000rpm (per Autoblog)

Also noteworthy, Autoblog reported that the engine makes "well above 300 pound-feet throughout most of the rpm range."

I think this engine has a lot of potential for the F150. Ford's TiVCT should make tuning the powerband fairly easy. I think 360-370hp and 390lb-ft are reasonable expectations for this engine in F150 form, which would be a strong upgrade over the 5.4L. Hopefully Ford also decides to give us the 6.2L in the F150, as it would make Ford the half ton power king by a reasonable margin.

It's no match for the Mahindra diesel!

LMAO at Jojo... Yea we are all scared about that Mahindra Diesel LOL. About as scared of it as the Toyota Tundra...

They will have to have the 6.2L in the F150. They just cant have only two motor options. the way I see it is the basic work truck to the mid range XLT gets the 5.0 with the premium trucks getting your choice of Ecoboost or the 6.2L. I hope they include the 6.2 on the XLT though since it is their most popular selling version of the F150.

Yeah the 5.0 and the 6.2 in the F150 would be a halo moment in truckdom. Ford would loose the engine PR problem forever.

@Allen: Thanks much! I've updated the figure. Ford has corrected their tech spec sheet for the engine.

I never will understand why the 5.4 has a bad rep. The thing out torques the GM 5.3 by a nice margin. I know GM and others have bigger motors and I think thats where the trouble really starts. Trust me when I say though for less than a $1,000 bucks you could easily crank out more power with a 5.4L than you might think. I think most of this carries over from the bad rep the Ford modular motors got when they were introduced. There is so much you can do with a 4.6L and a 5.4L now than just a few years ago. Its really easy to get 600hp from a 4.6L now if you wanted to, well if you had the time and some spare cash.

I love my 5.4 in my 05, which is pretty much the same as it is in the 09, minus 10HP. I am struggling to do better than 13mpg, even with a lot of highway/interstate driving. 27 gallon tank, I doubt it will see more than 320 miles. The engine hauls, I love the way it performs, but it does drink a lot more than my old 5.3 Chevy, which I could get 400-450 miles out of the same size tank. 16-18mpg.

Why is a mustang engine making news on PICKUPTRUCKS.COM. Hell the new GM3.6 hasnt made it on here. What about the Pentastar 3.6 which will make it into Rams in the future? It will probably be in the Rams sooner then the 5.0 will make it into Fords, if the 5.0 makes it into the trucks.

Well the GM 3.6 has been around for a while, there's not really any news on it to report. The Ford 5.0 news and pictures embargo ended last night, and it was relevant because Mike had reported for a while now, that the Coyote 5.0 V8 would be coming, with 400HP/400TQ in the Mustang and slightly detuned in the F150. This is an update to those reports - what, do you want nothing new to read on here? Keep up the great work, Mike!

With all of the 5.0 Mustang news coming out, does this mean there won't be any news on the 5.0 F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show? Bummer.

@Shawn: Loved your comments on the 5.4 . My 06 pulls hard and hauls what most GM fans say you need a 1 ton for. I love the 5.4 and will be sorry to see it go.

I pulled over 10,000lbs with my 2004 F150 with a 5.4 many times. The truck handled it well although it wasn't a speed demon. Looking forward to the 5.0 & the 6.2 along with the new 6.7 PSD.

Reminds me of my old 5.0L Cobra GT i bought new in1987. It had 225 hp and went like a stallion. This 'stang will really be a fast car with decent handling. Nice to have the 5.0L emblem back.

I now have a feeling we're not going to hear anything about the F-150 engines at the Detroit Auto Show. It's going to be all Mustang.

Ford has already announced the 6.2L V8 for the F150 - SVT Raptor at over 400HP and torque...

The Raptor is a great truck, but I don't need a Raptor. I need a regular F-150. I was hoping to hear more about the F-150 engines in Detroit but it sounds like it will be all Mustang, Focus, etc. Who knows?

Thanks Pudge. Alex I know some people who don't get but 13 and 14mpg with their 5.4L and I know of others who are getting 18mpg with theirs. I wonder if a tune up or a computer adjustment would give you any increase. How you drive is a big factor to. I have a 2v 4.6L in a 2004 Ford, it aint setting the world on fire with its 230hp but it does get around 19mpg +/- 1mpg on how I drive it... which is usually hard lol. If they could get me an 5.0L that cranks out 365hp and 390tq that would be awesome. Something tells me the will save the 6.2L for the higher end lineup or for the XLT with a heavy duty tow package with seven lug wheels. Either way 400+ hp and mid 400tq would be awesome.

Its about time ford bring back the 5.0 302 the 4.6 is a P.O.S cant wait til they bring back the 460 to replace the P.O.S. 6.8 V10

Thanks Shawn,

Yeah I am trying to do anything I can - other than spending a fortune to try and bring the fuel economy up a little on my 5.4. I love everything else about the truck though.

Ford had to do something, a similar rated Ford f-150 gets way out towed by a similar Dodge 1500,
youtube http://www.youtube.c...h?v=OC2KXxb2dTM

DAVID ? cant wait till they bring back the 460 to replace the P.O.S. 6.8 V10 <<<<< Your kidding right ? 460 is a POS COMPARED to the 3v V10 . I have 3v v10 F250 LARIAT and owned a 460 XLT EXT CAB . The 3v V10 is far SUPERIOR in everyway POSSIBLE than the 460 .... WoW some PEOPLE on HERE .....

Sorry about that youtube address, here the correct address
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC2KXxb2dTM

Reaver,

Apparently YOU don't get it. Sure the 6.8 may be stronger, more efficient, reliable, and cleaner but your completely forgetting how much better the 460 sounds when BSing over a can of Schlitz about how much better things were back then before all them fancy injectrers and electronics and how my buddy knows this guy who heard from a friend about how those V10's aint holdin up.

My sister's friend has a cousin that read on line that the 6.8 is a POS. So, it must be true!

The 6.8l has absolutely NO problems at all.

Burt, I don't blame them for putting a fully enclosed trailer on the back of the Ford, and an empty looking thing on the back of the Dodge, I know it will get wind resistance, but it won't simulate weight AND resistance. Nobody argues the Hemi has more HP than the 5.4, which is really important in a truck. HP is way more important than torque for towing. My fav pickup vids on Youtube are the tug-of-wars with one being engaged in 4x4 with a LSD on the back, and the one they want to lose being in 4x2 mode with an open diff, then reading all the viewer comments talking about horse power being the key!

@Alex, You say HP is more important than torque when towing...??? It is the other way around. Torque is eveything when towing not horsepower, that is why the diesels can out pull the gas engines by a huge margin. Diesels put out 650 plus ft/lb torque and at the same time have 350 plus horsepower.

Sorry Snowman, I guess I didn't do a good enough job at trying to sound sarcastic with my remarks at Burt's post.

@ Alex.

Did you watch the rest of the video. They switched trailers and did a second run. The Ram still walked all over the Ford.

Nope... Got bored... I also don't really care. My next truck won't have a Hemi. If I get a Dodge, maybe a Cummins, but it would probably be a GM 5.3 or Duramax - or Ford EcoBoost, 6.2 or 6.7 diesel. Plenty of time to decide, cos it's not going to be soon.

THats good news for ford guys pretty much after that all half tons will be close in power, My 09 ram with hemi will all ways have the power to do anything easily 390 hp 407 lbs torque stock.

HMMM I think there is a 80hp an 45tq difference for the DODGE 1500 5.7L an weight about 1500 less for the dodge .... dont think the F150 is gonna out do the DODGE with 80hp less an 45tq less an weights 1500 pounds more .... THINK u have it all wrong I'm shure this isnt about who can go faster up a PASS ? <<<<< REALLY STUPID ...... BURT ?

Bob, you evidently misunderstood, That the two trucks are very similar, but that the trailer weights were 1500 lbs under the max towing for the Ford(17,000 lbs). And darn, it couldn't even pull that at speed! BOB!

The Ram 1500 is great for drag racing but I prefer the F-150 for towing.

@Alex. TruckTrend put a K&N air intake kit in a 2009 F150 and claimed a 9.4% MPG improvement, with 8.5% HP increase. Here is the link: http://www.trucktrend.com/features/consumer/163_0912_2009_ford_f150_intake_kit_tech/index.html
It puzzles me as to why guys call the 5.4 a POS just because it has less HP that a 5.7 Hemi or a 6.2 Chev. It is a smaller engine.
Ford is going to have the 6.2L, and the Ecoboost engine out soon. Both are in the 400 HP range. It won't be too long and Ram will have a bigger engine out as well. Chev and Toyota will eventually "up the ante" when it comes to HP. The manufacturers will always try to one up each other for bragging rights.
How many guys really, and truly need the bigger engine anyway?

The thing I find funny about people talking about all this hp/lb-ft, is the size and age of the motors. Ford is working with a motor (5.4L) that has been in the F150 since 1996 (1997 model year). Sure it has had some upgrades over the years, but is still holding it's own in most aspects compared to the other makes/models top gas motors, which are all at least 8yrs (2004 Titan 5.6L) younger and are also larger. GM 6.0L/6.2L, Titan 5.6L, Tundra 5.7L and Ram 5.7L. Now if this 5.0L comes out in the F150 with similar power ratings (I'm speculating 360-380hp & 390-400lb-ft), how sad will that make these other trucks look at needing much larger motors to produce similar figures? On top of that, the 6.2L specs from the Raptor already exceed those of all 1/2 ton gas motors on the market. Then we have the 3.5L EcoBoost that will be making numbers around these other makes large V8's as well. And I'm sure the 3.5L EB and 5.0L Coyote, will both get considerably better mpgs over these others large motors.

Justin,

They will never understand that concept.

why is 5.0 better than 5.4 liter? why is it replacing it?

They have gone back to the legandary 5.0 that was used back in the 1970s. This is a great engine with tremendous potential. I own a 1997 Ford Explorer Limited- 5.0 engine. I has just under 230hp, but there is room for improvement and it doesn't involve a supercharger. They can squeeze a few more ponies and some more torque out of that engine, if they wanted to.

Nathan,

Other than displacement, this engine isn't anything like the 302 cid carburated engine in the 70's, or the fuel injected 5.0 liter engine of the 80's and 90's. It's a far more complex and advanced design.

HAHAHA THIS NEW 5.0 is dope
makes more power then a 6.0 l Chevy.
