The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty is Motor Trend's Truck of the Year

Motor Trend has selected the new Ram Heavy Duty as its 2010 Truck of the Year, in a unanimous decision by MT's judges.

The Ram HD, updated for 2010 and previously known as the Dodge Ram, received all new sheetmetal and a vastly improved interior. It carries over its well-regarded and powerful 6.7-liter Cummins I-6 diesel and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 gas engines.

Other contenders up for the honor included the new Ford F-150 SVT Raptor high-speed off-road pickup, Ford Transit Connect van and 4.6-liter V-8 Toyota Tundra.

It looks like a nice lookin truck . BUT ????? u show this POWER WAGON an I have never seen one ever in my area ... I have already seen A HAND FULL of Ford RAPTORS since its RELEASE ..... Truck of the year should be somewhat based on SALES to dont u think and put at least 25,000 to 50,000 miles on a truck before u make it KING !!!!!! not 100 miles ....

@Reaver75: Great point! It's fixed by replacing the PW photo with a picture of a 3500 DRW 6.7-L torque and towing monster. :-)

haha Ford Transit Van and the POS Tundra really must have been stiff competition for this truck....

Jake,

Seriously. This is by far the most hideous comparo I have even bothered to read. Don't know why I clicked on the link, bored I guess. This is one of the many reason I stopped my subscriptions of MT. I'm better off reading Readers Digest in the can. PASS

It's opinions like Reaver's why the inferior f-150 won last year. It is a BEST TRUCK review, not a POPULARITY contest. Read last years truck compairo, the only reason why for Ford won was because it "sells more." That was complete B.S.

what the f? dodges are fiber glass glued together, and a transit connect? are you kidding me, they need to start doing better comparos, like the 2011 supa dutee

I have worked with all 3 major HD trucks there all towin MONSTORS ... Thats a nice color on that truck I like it .....

As for the people who hated the comparo it couldnt be because the Raptor lost? Chalk up another win for the Ram.

The Raptor is an F-150. It won last year. They're not going to give it to the F-150 two years in a row.

No Jeff, people hate this review because it includes the FORD FRIGGING TRANSIT VAN, in a truck review !

thats why

The new RAM HD rocks. What a great interior and of course the nicest body design of all. Can't beat the CUMMINS for torque and true diesel power. Super Duty Or Silverado can't hold a candle to the big rig look of the RAM and now with a top notch interior the competition is crying. ALL you FORD guys i hope you go out and buy the 2011 Super Duty with more emission crap and extra cost of Urea Diesel exhaust fluid. You will get tired of the rental while your truck is in the shop with ford mechanics scratching thier heads over what is wrong.

If you know anything about Motor Trend the anything of the year is not about comparing one to another. It is about being unique. The OMNI/Horizon won and so did the Reliant / Aires. The 1978 OMNI/Horizon rode on a 1960's SIMCA Chassis and still won. The Saturn Aura was a recent winner, so much for Saturn.

@snowman - don't be too quick to brag in relation to DEF. It looks like Ram will eventually be using DEF!
exerpt from this web site - "Commodity prices are one reason that the 2011 Dodge Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis trucks will use DEF systems instead of Adsorber catalysts. However, the Ram Heavy Duty pickups remain urea-free for 2010 and, likely, beyond."
See the following link.
http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2009/10/first-drive-review-2010-dodge-ram-heavy-duty-2500-3500.html
There is a down side to the Dodge Adsorber catalysts - they are extremely expensive to replace and have been a target of theft for scrap metal due to the expensive rare metals inside.

there go the mad ford guys again. i didnt hear all this stuff when ford won last year. its o.k. lets all have a big group hug:) and get over it.

Actually Ford won this year, it's still 2009. You didn't hear anything from the Ford guys then because it was the new F-150 vs the new Ram. F-150 won. This year it's Ram Heavy Duty with the old tranny and old engine vs a cargo van and the old Tundra with a 4.6 and another model F-150.

Truck make-overs are not that common so it's expected the Ram would win since the F150 took it last year...there was really no other competition other than the F150 Raptor but again, that "foundation" won last year. They practically had no competition, might as well give it to them.

Oh wow. Sounds like the year the Ridgeline won. Not saying the Ram is a bad truck, just there wasn't any real competition.

iT'S BAD WHEN YOUR COMPETITION IS A MINI WORK VAN, A STRIPPED DOWN WORK PICK-UP, AND A FULL BLOWN DESERT RACER...... HMMM WHICH ONE WILL WIN

I didn't know the caps were on until i finished typing.. too lazy to change it

Short lived victory. The '11 Super Duty will be out soon.

yeah run home and get your big brother.......he might get his tail whipped too :). it has happen before. come on guys its o.k.

I am FORD GUY i own a 2008 harley f150 congrats to dodge on the win but why where not chevy silverado and the titan not in the running tundra work truck come on !!! ford van like how laughable motor trend put all the truck makers in there and have it out this was very boring!!!!!!!

Motor Trend's test isn't a true comparison of the vehicles in the test.
Motor Trend's criteria are as follows:
(Exerpt from Truck Trend site)
Truck of the Year is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or significantly upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year's crop of new cars, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.
THE CRITERIA
Each TOTY contender is evaluated against six key criteria. They are:
DESIGN ADVANCEMENT
Quality execution of exterior and interior styling; innovation in vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials.
ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE
Integrity of total vehicle concept and execution, clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing, and dynamics issues; use of cost-effective technologies that benefit the consumer.
INTENDED FUNCTION
How well the vehicle does the job its designers and product planners intended.
EFFICIENCY
Low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle's competitive set.
SAFETY
Primary safety-the vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash-as well as secondary safety measures that protect occupants from harm during a crash.
VALUE
Price and equipment levels measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment.

Congratulations Ram Trucks. It's been a rough year for Chrysler/Dodge. Hopefully they continue to improve and provide decent competition for Ford & GMC. Competition makes everyone's trucks better.

@ Morrow,
2011 SUPER DOODIE new diesel engine looks to be a maintenance nightmare. Talk to the guys who own current model ford and find out how much trouble they are having, not to mention extremely poor fuel economy. Used to have all fords for logging outfit, but the later models have proven to be junk. Too many tow back to dealership days. Dodges have been much more reliable and twice the fuel economy.

Next year the Kia Soul'ster will win motortrend truck of the year.

@snowman - change your name to BSman. All you do is flap your gums. Are you an engineer or mechanic? You look at a few pics and read a blog and your an expert on pickups. THe only thing reliable on a Dodge diesel pickup is the engine and that is made by Cummins. You've been eating too many refried beans that are brought across the border with the Dodge, or is it Fiat pickups.

@Lou N:

It has been previously stated that all of Dodges Chasis Cabs are going to use DEF. It is a cheeper system then the current scruber system. The Cummins in the 2500 and 3500 will use the scrubers until Benz pulls the contranct allowing Dodge to use BlueTec.

For all of you Ford guys who think the Ford stands head and shoulders over the competition, you are wrong. All of the HD's now days are pretty much equal.

For those of you who will eventually say that the Ford can pull more, please let me educate you:

1)First paragraph on page 3: "Maximum towing capacity for the Ram 3500 is 17,500 pounds, significantly higher than the F-350's 16,000 or the Silverado/Sierra 3500HD's 13,000."
http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/truck/112_1002_2010_motor_trend_truck_of_the_year_winner_ram_heavy_duty/towing

2)Pickuptrucks.com stated for the 2011 Ford Super Duty: "capability will improve by about 100 pounds"
http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2009/09/first-look-2011-ford-fseries-super-duty.html

Sounds like Dodge had the Boss Hog until somebody tries to equal it.

good choice,y not a dodge fan but if the company build something nice and good to work ,and a good puller not just for decorate you parking lot,,good choice..

Amazing how many people can sit here and continue to say the only reliable/good thing about a Dodge truck is the (diesel) motor. Ford has had diesel nightmares since '03 and all you Ford die-hards still brag about Ford being the best, quickly forgetting their problems; problems that many vehicles can have. Dodge had tranny issues dating back to the 47RE, and here we are, nearly a decade later, with people still insisting Dodges are junk, many never having owned one. Saying that the only good thing about these Dodge trucks is the diesel engine, has to be one of the most ignorant, hating, and foolish statements to make. I can't wait to hear somebody say "Yeah, those new HD Rams are junk. Just wait til the trans. craps the bed!" Although looks are subjective, I think a high majority would praise this truck as being the best looking. If Ford's newer trucks (08-11) had Ram badges on them, people would say they're the ugliest trucks on the planet. However they're not ugly, just because they're Fords. Blind loyalty.

Way to go Dustin! Amen!

Worst comparison I've ever heard of. This isn't goanna tell us anything about HD trucks until the Heavy Duty Shoot Out. Until then bahaha @ Motor Trend for this comparison.

Mike, PLEASE stop with the "formerly known as Dodge Ram" crap. You obviously didn't pay attention to any of the official statements from Chrysler about the Ram brand.

http://www.detnews.com/article/20091207/AUTO01/912070349/1148/Chrysler-has-big-plans-for-Ram-trucks

Note this paragraph from the article:

-- All Ram products still fall under the Dodge umbrella and the Dodge name will be somewhere on every vehicle, Diaz said, but "Dodge" does not appear on a new Ram's head logo that will debut on trucks in about six months. Nor will "Dodge" appear in advertising for the trucks, Diaz said. --

See, Mike? They are still DODGE Rams! The Ram brand separation is strictly for marketing and accounting.

Dodge Ram Rules !!!!!

@RoadTrip: So, let me get this straight? Chrysler wont refer to them as Dodge Rams nor will you see the word Dodge in any truck advertising, and youll have to look to find the word Dodge somewhere on the vehicle. So, if they are still Dodge Rams, why are they going to such lengths to hide that from Ram buyers? Chrysler cant have it both ways. For now, these are the trucks previously known as Dodge Rams.

Mike, my 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 doesn't say "DODGE" anywhere on it. Same for 2006s, 2007s, 2008s, and the 2009 HDs. By your logic, they're not Dodges. Title and registration still say Dodge, just as they would for a 2010.

For some reason, you're hung up on the marketing aspect of this as being some sort of name change. Find the name "CHEVROLET" on a Corvette... go ahead. When you go to register one, it's still a Chevy.

If the CEO of the Ram brand says they're still Dodges, why do you feel the need to perpetuate confusion and misinformation?

@RoadTrip: I'm not perpetuating anything except that the Dodge brand name has been removed from Ram trucks. I was thanked by a person at Chrysler Wednesday morning for our Power Wagon video - because we didn't say Dodge in it.

I find it amazing at how intense the brand bashing gets. I feel sorry for Mike as he has to deal with this site on a daily basis. From an anthropological perspective I can see why brand bashing exists. We humans haven't evolved much from our cave man roots, but society and technology has exploded. We make sense of it all by breaking things down into groups or tribes that we can recognize or associate with. In the case of vehicles: it would be the Dodge Tribe, the Ford tribe, Chev tribe, Toyota tribe, the Detroit is best tribe, America is best tribe, and so on. Instead of beating rival tribesman over the head with bones, sticks, and clubs, we use computer key strokes.
I think all of the trucks have improved greatly. Ford has had problems with their diesels, but then every manufacture has had problems in the past. Dodge's problems have been made worse by the Ram name change. Loyal Dodge "Tribesman" have had their loyalties shaken, trivializing the whole name change shows a lack of understanding of basic human nature.

OK, fess up...who is copying posts from bof over to here?

What is bof?

www.BlueOvalForums.com -- a Ford enthusiast forum

A couple of the posts above were copied and pasted directly from that site by someone.

I'm with WTH. One of my posts at BOF was copied and pasted onto this site. I've never posted to this article either, well until now.

Hahah fess up. Like these girls are gonna fess up.

Can the personal attacks, folks. We're all here because we like trucks and want to see the best trucks on the road, regardless of make, model or brand loyalty. There are plenty of folks out there who'd like to see us not drive trucks at all or only on their terms. The last thing we should be doing is arguing amongst ourselves.

Thanks for your posts, Lou. I appreciate them.

The thing that I hate is the fact that "Ram branding" is only beneficial to the commercial market; not Chrysler as a whole. It's just a way for FIAT to get their vehicles into the U.S. lineup. In no way will this benefit Chrysler itself. It's all greedy, self-serving intentions. I read that article about Fiat keeping the Dodge name, but if you read carefully, they're really implying all but trucks will retain the Dodge name. The buying of Chrysler by Fiat for resurrection and profitability is a mere coverup. The sole intent of this purchase is to use American-rooted names to introduce more unwelcome euro-junk into this country. The idea that Dodge trucks and cars can't be marketed under the same name brand is ludicrous, and quite frankly, a load of B.S. These clowns in charge of Chrysler aren't car/truck people. They're just money people who have visions of dollar signs in everything they do. There was nothing wrong with Dodge as a name plate. Fiat couldn't care less about Chrysler. For Daimler they were a cash cow (Chrysler had $12 billion in cash reserves in '98 before Daimler bought them..and spent all the money), and now under Fiat's wing they're just a way for the Iveco brand to come rebranded for acceptance into the United States. I genuinely want the Ram marketing strategy to fail. It would teach these people, who are so out of touch with automotive history, and apparently the industry, a valuable lesson. Well, hopefully.

@john, Ya i am a tech. Know more about diesel than you think.

This is the nicest ,toughest looking truck yet. Gotta get me one for hauling my heavy equipment. Say good;bye to my fords and HELLO CUMMINS RAM HD.

@ Dustin.

Chrysler is right now, because of FIAT, in the best shape it has been in since Benz bought it. Chrysler once again has a goal and direction. It hasent had that in a long long time. I think this Sergio fella has a good head on his shoulders, and knows how to run a buisness.

Does anyone have a link to a photo(s) of a LONG BED Dodge (err...cuse me...RAM) HD CrewCab 4x4 with SRWs (like a Ram 2500)? I've seen pictures of the one-ton duallies with the 8-foot bed, but no pics of the 3/4 tons with the longbed.

Even the official Ram website doesn't seem to have any pics of such a vehicle.

Thanks.

Wake up peope! If there ever was a sympathy vote by Motor Trend, this was it. As John McCain and more and more are stating, Chrysler is not going to be here much longer. The whole Dodge line of trucks is made in Mexico. They have had the same HP and torque for several years. The sales of Dodge is in the toilet. They don't have the technical ability to build engines or transmissions, or the cash to buy like companies for themselves. They are not paying back the government loan as the General is already doing. The auto sales are so low, for instance less than 600 PT cruisers were sold last month. Ford and the General are going to kick the HP up to 400 and bury that 6 banger forever. GM is produced either in Flint or Fort Wayne and Ford Super Duty in Louiville.

@ miras, Ford diesel built in mexico. Cummins built in the states.

Like I've stated before; Rest in peace, Chrysler.
