2010 NAIAS: Ram Heavy Duty Pickup Turns Auto Show Upside Down

Ram Heavy Duty Pickups Turn Auto Show Upside Down

Ram Trucks CEO Fred Diaz says that the brand's new 2010 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks are going to turn the segment upside down. To hammer the point home, well, the Ram brand has hammered a 2500 HD upside down to the ceiling of the Chrysler display at the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit. We're told it's a a real truck. At least one person is willing to stand underneath the 6,500-pound work tough chandelier.

And the Ram fifth wheel towing is 26000. The only reason why Ford says best in class is because they incorporate the 450 in the same class as gm and rams 3500s. Ford needs a bigger truck to outperform the ram.

Snowman. You are correct. They are number posted by the manufatctor just to see how big they can get them. But the Cummins is the only enigine we will see, after the SAE standards take place, to see an increase.

This site should get all of the pickups together and do a shoot out based on the new SAE standards. That would put most of the "my truck is better than your truck" crap to rest.
With that said, I would bet that someone would still cry foul, or complain about test bias. It just never seems to end ...........

@Lou: Our Heavy Duty Shootout comparo is coming. You can count on that.

@ bill , I never said ford diesels were crap. Like you said "people" call down ford diesels and they are the ones who had lots of problems with the 6.0L/6.4L . i just stated the fact that Cummins is the only medium duty diesel in the light truck segment.

This is what i think Allison is the best transmission, Cummins is the best diesel, and the Ford has the best suspesion. Put them all together and that would be the truck of all trucks. One thing i noticed is this New RAM HD is sure stirring up the pot , which is great publicity for RAM.

@ Mike,, Heavy duty shootout is coming you tell us ,this is exciting. Problem with these shootouts is they are very short term and don't calculate reliability or major/minor failures you can encounter with a long term, real world test. I envy you getting to test all these new expensive trucks, because anything new is nice and fun to try out. What a dreat job you have and do.

@snowman: If there's one thing that I wish we could do, it's a long-term test where all the trucks are put through the exact same duty cycle for 12 months. That would be somethin!

When you guys do the 1/2 ton shoot out, it would be nice to see every engine configuration available in the test. I know the logistics of arranging such a test would be difficult, but it would be worth it. The tests are almost always done with the "premier" engines. I'd like to know how big a difference there exists between, for example: a 6.2, 6.0, 5.3, and 4.6. It would make it easier to decide on what vehicle to buy.

anon...Really ? Mopars the most unreliable ? Dodge Ram most reliable truck,Caravan most reliable minivan...If you know anything about unreliable Mopars, the unreliable ones are not even a Mopar...its the ones with the Mitsubishi engines in older minivans and some new 4 banger cars...anon stop drinking the kool-aid,they laugh because like you are ignorant and uneducated..

anon...Mopars most unreliable...Really ? Dodge Ram most reliable truck and Dodge Caravan most reliable...The older Mitsubishi powered minivans and cars are troublesome (non Chrysler engine)but GM,Ford made there fair share of junk vehicles and Honda,Toyota are still making them today like mad...So,stop drinking the kool-aid and stop being so ignorant and uneducated,we are laughing at you for your uneducated comment..

anon - take a pill - a large ram pill. Dodge trucks have had a reputation for weak trannys and rear ends.
Caravans are infamous for being unreliable. Tranny's especially. They may of lucked out and made an 09 Caravan that was reliable. the ONLY chrysler/dodge/jeep products that were rated "average" was the Ram p/u(Consumer Report), and the Caravan(JDPower).
The rest of the product line is bellow average crap. POS products. No wonder they are in the crapper. I thought Mopar stood for MOtor PARts. You will buy a sh-- load of motor parts owning a Dodge,Chrysler product. Notice I didn't say Ram.

Wow, that's cool. Wish I could go and see it. Check out this link to see how they did it: http://www.ramzone.com/2010/01/13/curious-how-they-got-a-2-5-ton-ram-on-the-ceiling/

Thanks PowerWagon. The Ram is the best looking truck i have ever seen. Only truck that looks good up or down. The hood lines are absolutely perfect, front grille is super aggressive looking, the body style just rocks. Awesome way to show off this RAM Heavy Duty. I,ll take one with the Cummins please.
