Holden Ute Could Still Come to the U.S. as an El Camino, GM's Reuss Says

Mark Reuss, General Motors' newly installed president of GM North America, says the Holden VE Ute may still come to the U.S. If it does, it could wear the famed Chevrolet El Camino badge.

Reuss raised hopes for a resurrected El Camino during an interview at the North American International Auto Show.

In January 2009, GM killed plans to sell the Ute as a Pontiac.

“I think another brand with the Ute would be pretty attractive,” Reuss said. Asked whether the potential brand for a U.S. VE Ute was GMC, Reuss volunteered “or Chevrolet”, raising the prospect that the model could be sold with the El Camino nameplate if it were to make it Stateside.

Reuss knows the Holden VE Ute intimately. He was the president of GM’s Australian division at the time the company developed its U.S. export program.

GM had announced that it planned to bring the VE Ute to the U.S. as a Pontiac G8 Sport Truck during the 2007 New York Auto Show. U.S.-specific development work, including engineering side airbags to meet federal safety standards, was carried out but the project was cancelled before a single ST made it into showrooms.

Reuss indicated he wasn’t convinced that the original plan to bring the Ute into the U.S. as a Pontiac, to be sold alongside the VE-based G8 sedan, was the best solution.

“I thought we’d have a hard time putting Ute into Pontiac, but I know it was part of the broader strategy of doing that because they were both VE, there are reasons why you do that, but I think another brand with the Ute would be pretty attractive,” he said.

Reuss said that, if anything, bringing a VE Ute and sedan to the U.S. was more compelling than it was the first time around given the cars now run upgraded V-6 engines, as well as a V-8.

“We didn’t have direct injection in these cars when we’re looking at this the first time,” he said.

“You have to look at this strategically and say, VE has got to be able to stand on its own on the world stage and I think now it is getting to be able to do that, from a fuel economy (perspective) and you will see mass come out of the car,” he said.

“It only gets more attractive on an export basis.”

As for a possible time frame, Reuss wasn't specific and mentioned he had a lot to do in his new role.

The business case for the Holden El Camino will be assisted by the fact Reuss is also looking at ways to return the VE sedan-based G8 to the US market.

Reuss indicated the VE models would need a significant redesign before re-entering the U.S. market.

“The exact G8 car coming back, I don’t know that we’d do that because we would get crucified for not having some of the uniqueness for another brand designed into that car that we did for Pontiac and we designed a lot into that car for Pontiac. It wasn’t just a facelifted VE, it had colors, dials, ride and handling that was different and it was for the American market,” he said.

Reuss was asked whether it be tailored in a similar way for another brand?

“If we did something with VE it would be the same approach with integrity of another brand,” he said.

GM Holden president, Alan Batey, who worked under Reuss as his Australian sales and marketing chief, said he was hopeful Commodore Ute and sedan could both be sold in the U.S.

“It is too early to say what is definitely going to happen, all I can say is that there is absolutely ongoing discussion as you heard from Mark,” Batey said. “He sees possibilities, we have to wrestle those down in the next few months, find out what we can do and when we can do it and come out appropriately with the right product plan,” he said.

I've been looking at the Ute for years (2002) and think it would make a great El Camino. I think that would be one of the biggest target group. Poeple are spending a lot of money restoring El Caminos, so why not a new one with modern technoligy.

I also would one of the first to put down a deposit.

Bring it on. man that would be agreat seller for GM add the supercharged V8 like it has in AUSTRALIA and GM will not be able to keep them in stock first time i saw one on TOP GEAR i thought it was the best sounding auto

I would like to know How I could acquire one of these trucks

i would definetely buy this car. i mean, really, most full-size truck owners (and i include myself in this) rarely haul over 1000 lbs in the bed. this car-truck crossover is just what we need. i'm so tired of filling my f-150 just so it can haul it's own heavy fat ass around town.

I love the Holden line wish they could make it to my driveway. I'll never buy again unless GM offers Pontiac loyalists the Holden Option. I adore my G8 GT but holden offers more of the "good stuff".

Matt, is anybody forcing you to drive an F150?

Wonder if GM will consider this a Colorado replacement? A GMC Caballero/Sprint could replace the Canyon? I dont think that would fly with real truckers.Especially lacking a 4WD system and no extended cab.

Need to haul a motorcycle from time to time, I don't want to use a trailer and my 2wd pickup bed is on the tall side. GM: Sell me a Ute with a V8, I don't care how you badge it or what you call it, just get it over here within the next few years!!!

It's always fascinating to read these comments from dudes born after El Caminos were even sold. The car/truck concept originated in Australia as a Ute, and they're still made there obviously... and very popular. I've owned 6 El Caminos and still think there's no better "truck" for most people, because they ride better, have better performance, and get WAY BETTER gas mileage because they're AERODYNAMIC !!! I've hauled just as much in an El Camino as in any of my other "trucks." GM also makes smaller versions of these in several countries... Brazil, Mexico, South Africa. I still think some version of "El Camino" would sell well in the US for all these reasons. For the idiot that said GM quit making them here because they didn't sell... well that's because they came out with the new S10 at that time, and they hadn't updated the El Camino for several years. They'd just let it slide into oblivion with a worthless V6, so guess which one outsold the other. DUH

Please GM! PLEASE bring this killer ride to the US! I once owned a 71 El Camino. While my friends were building Camaros and Firebirds and Mustangs, I could keep up and usually beat them, and still be able to haul tools and parts (usually blown Ford engines, haha!) My 96 Z-71 4x4 was a great truck, but mileage sucked. The El Camino got similar mileage, but way more bang for the buck! The Colorado/Canyon is butt ugly! Sorry, deal with it. Note to GM! Offer it in 2 or 4 wheel drive, V6 or V8, and come up with an adjustable ride height system for the 4x4! Run low and fast in 2WD, or lift it up and lock in the front axle for some light offroading. My 91 S-10 Blazer was the greatest camping vehicle ever created. Combine these ideas, and you will have a sure winner! Make mine black, V8, 6sdp manual please!

Better than the Subaru.
I would hope it could tow.
It has to tow. They're building these up to mudders in Australia.
It's going to be hard to meet American standards and it still be a Holden.

Look what happened to the GTO....

I am anxious to see what happens with this. It would have been a great Pontiac G8...

Please please please don't screw up with the Ute and make it only a 2 passenger vehicle. A bench with a fold down armrest would be perfect. There are no 3- front seat cars around anymore except Fords. Remember the GMC Syclone. 2 pass only. I believe that it cost sales.

I like the ute very much both holden and ford.We where down under in febr 2009 and saw a lot of them. Kids, wife and me loved them.Maybe not always practical in Canada with al the potholes in the road and a lots of gravelroads.
Most people have 3 vehicles in the driveway including a family cruzer. So why not one of them a ute?90% of the vehicles I pass have only one person in it anyway.

I would buy one in a heart beat I already have the G8 and i love the car but I really wanted to get the G8 sport truck ( what was cancelled ) and that really sucks so I ended up getting the sedan.. Gm should really get a move on it and get this car in the US market so they will be the first ones to have a car like this body style. Also get the sedan back in the US as well it was a great selling car and i cant understand why they wouldn't of put the G8 right into the Chevy line either as the Lumina SS or even the Commodore ss. GM really needs to wake up and get there act together and stop taking forever before they bring a new car out like the camaro! what was a disappointment the cars huge its wider then my G8 and maybe 3 or 4 inches shorter....

P.S. the El Camino and the Lumina should be both Manual or Automatic transmission it was very disappointing the G8 GT only came auto and if you wanted a manual tranny you need to step up to the GXP what was over 40,000$

If you bring it, they will buy it! Are you listening, GM???

This would be an awesome choice for the American market.
It has many applications not only practical but trendy and collectible. General Motors needs to stop dragging there feet on this and just do it!"before i turn 30!" I don't feel there's any reason to completely change the look and trim. It has a good look all it needs it to be left side drive and have a Chevy emblem put on the grill. that would make me and hundreds more happy. Also it needs to come with engine choices v8 and v6, unlike the old Pontiac G8 that only came with the v8 and probably could of done better in the market if offered with a V6. Americans want choice and a new El Camino!!!!

I have a first year 1959 El Camino and would love to have a first year return El Camino, That would be great!

Bring back the El Camino and I'll be at the dealership tomorrow.

I would buy1 in a heartbeat. They. Are sleek and hip in the world of redneck monstrosities I see snarling fuel around town.

I have owned 3 El camino's and can tell you for most homeowners it is a perfact vehicle. I currently am driving a '09 Sliverado 1500 with a 5.3 and would love to have a Ute to replace it. Better fuel mileage, ride, and they look fantastic.
Please bring back the El Camino, I miss mine and would be the first to buy one if I could and for you guys that think they would be a flop, go buy the biggest diesel dully you can find to haul nothing but air if it makes you happy but give me my Swell El.

People talk badly about it because they don't get the purpose. Its a car for that guy using his G8 with the trunk open and lumber sticking out. Sporty enough for youth to crave it, and versatile enough for it to actually have use. Plenty of room for camping, lawn care, or hauling smaller motor sports equipment. The stuff you see young dudes hauling in lowered S10s/Canyons. Fast enough to make you want it instead of a Si or GTi.

No! Just sell a Holden here. Don't want it turned into a hideous Chevy. I haven't any attachment to the old names. Please don't ruin it.

Also, don't ruin the handling by making it a spongy car that can't corner!

YES, I want one!
I just got back to Europe from Australia, and if they were made with the steering wheel on the right (read left) side and with US standards, then I would be the first one to order one. I have a 70 El Camino, and I love driving it, but it is now an oldtimer, so not a daily driver...

Please bring this to the US please!!! Our family would be in line to buy one immeadately. We have drooled over this car for years in Australia. This would be great especaily the four door version they have.
