Using just these numbers, it's interesting that compact/midsize trucks made up a slightly larger percentage of overall truck sales in January '10 than January '09, going from 16% to 17%, due to compact/midsize sales declining at a slower rate than fullsize sales. This despite that the overall lineup of compact/midsize trucks are older designs than their fullsize counterparts, and generally have smaller ad budgets. It's an extremely small set of data, but I wonder if this points to a slight market shift toward smaller trucks. If it does, Ford, GM, and Chrysler might regret leaving the compact/midsize market to the Japanese.

so does this mean the Dodge Dakota and GMC Canyon didn't even place?

I also think it would be interesting to see what the sizes (1/2, 3/4, full ton) contributed to the overal figures (assuming the f series, silverado and ram include all three sizes figures)

you know for all the people who call gm government motors, i know they screwed up, i love gm, but how many people file for bankrupcy, how many of you care about the banks who recieved so much more money, i figured it out, each tax payer only forked over about 400 bucks to keep gm alive, is that such a big deal to everyone, isnt it worth 400 bucks just to keep one persons job alive, what if it was your family member whos job was on the line, and remember, its not all... gms fault, blame the unions too

I would see your point, IF the government actually saved jobs, which they did not, GM shut down several plants, and layed off thousands of employess (including GM's Exec, perhaps rightfully so)

@bob, where did you get the 1/2 sales information? where did the 119+ unit come from? was that the total for GMC 1/2 tons for 2009?

because if GMC moved 119+ combined 1/2 tons in january alone why are the figures showing less then 30k for all classes?

personally i find GM and Dodge make great trucks for the money.
Just like Busch makes great beer...for the money.

It's so funny what an article turns into. There are a lot of very knowledgeable postings on here. I am another one to say that the Sierra looks a lot better then the Silverado. I think the only reason the Silverado sells better then the Sierra is because of marketing. Chevy is considered the truck from GMC, the Sierra is the "other truck." If the Sierra was the Silverado, and the Silverado was Sierra, other words switch the name plates, the Silverado would sell more units. The Sierra looks tougher then the Silverado. I think there are several reasons that the F Series is on top for so many years. In whatever year you look at a Ford truck it is squared off and looks tough, like a truck should. Nobody who is a true brand loyalist will accept this statement: if consumers bought their vehicles on there looks rather then the brand those numbers would look a lot different. The F series is on top because of perseption, it is not the most powerful truck out there, but it is number 1. I read an article on truck buyers: the basis of the article was what kind of buyers buy what. The consumer who mostly buys a Ram is uneducated, did not graduate school. That always stuck with me. Again the F Series was bought mainly by educated consumers, those who graduated higher education. Nobody really cares if this truck has 50 more horse power then that one. Unless you are towing a very large trailer any half ton will do the trick, or even mid size, or compact. My last truck was a Silverado, it was nice. It did what I needed to do. My profession is not in construction, I am a retail manager. My passion is working on houses, any track serves the purpose. As I read through all these postings it makes me wonder, all of these people are getting all bent out of shape combining figures so things go their way, its human nature. The serious question is what do you do for a living? I just imagine a bunch of geeks in there mommies basement hooked on truck facts and figures. I currently do not have a truck, I will be getting one soon. My current job requires me to have extnsive travel. Who on these postings actually uses there truck on a daily basis other then commuting?

I raise cattle.

@cmka.1 - great post. It's refreshing to read a post from someone who actually has thought things out.
I don't need a truck for work but I need something with 1/2 ton capacity, pack my kids and 2 labs around. Some camping and fishing, packing dirt bikes etc. My van works okay for this but it's not a 4x4. That is the only limiting thing about it. I don't need it for work.

As usuall GM outsold them all. Ever notice Ford guys are very insecure about thier trucks and Dodge guys are so secure about thier trucks they don't have to say anything, just sit back and enjoy thier trucks. Can't wait for the new diesel ford brings out, more failures i bet.

kevin Dodge guys don't say anything about their trucks because nobody is buying them. 22% drop in sales homeboy. Might as well sit back and enjoy your limited edition soon to be collectors edition truck once Dodge goes under.

"@ Enjelus
Hmm all my buddies that drive GM Sierras, have all stated that there 2nd choice is not Chevy. Why? Apperance. "

That's funny, all my buddies that drive Fords wished they had bought a Silverado.

@Lex

NO NO NO
Ford was the first to separate the 250+ into a separate line and chassis in 1998. Chevy did it in circa 2002. The vehicle you show in the picture is a 3500HD which is a specialty vehicle for commercial grade much like Ford did for the F-Superduty in the 90's which would eventually become the F450 when the new line of trucks came out.

The truck took the same chassis used in the 1500-3500 and added upgraded suspension and breaks from the medium duty line. This is nothing new and you can trace this back to the 70's when we used the Chevrolet "Trailering Specialty" C30 to haul hay down from Brady during the summers. It is however NOT a different vehicle from the mainline.

WHO CARES who outsells who! Bottem line is- GM is STILL in deep trouble! Ford and ,as of yet, Toyota is NOT! If GM did out sell ford this year and as all you GM (Great Mistake) guys say, then Why is GM almost bankrupt? Listen to someone who has owned both GM and Ford! GM does not stand behind there vehicles! I plow alot of snow, Trailer equipment, and tow heavy loads! 2 out of 3 of the GM's I own(ed) didn't last! The 2 fords I have are STILL doing the work! The 3rd GM is on its way out! (2-Duramaxes, and 1-8.1liter V-8) 1-Tons trucks. Ive kept the 8.1 liter pick-up, but after 73,000 easy miles, the tranny is about to let go! Bot the Fords are Diesels, 1- 7.3 liter, and 1- 6.0 liter F-350's
and the 7.3l has over 120,000 miles with NO PROBLEMS! The 6.0l has had some issues but Ford has stepped up and fixed them !! GM has just told me that after the second time that I had trouble with the Duramaxes (injectors, H/P oil system. Exhaust manifolds, TRANNYS, ect.. that it must be something that I am doing! AND DID NOTHING TO REMEDDY THE PROBLEMS! Good way to keep customers GM!
I'll take Fords over GM;s anyday!

Here's the truth, Any where you go, or where you work, Any company or business out there, use mostly ford as their work trucks, and that's A FACT!!! Do you know why they use ford? Because they can get the job done!!! Besides, how can all you "Chevy fans" out there talk all this mess when your manufacturer has gone Bankrupted??? That says it all, Unlike FORD, they haven't and will not go bankrupt. Let me put it to you this way, GM did not sell enough vehicles throughout the years, so they went bankrupt!!! Ford on the other hand, sold and WILL keep on selling the Best selling trucks of ALL TIME, For 33 Straight Years in a row!!! By the way, Since January 2010 , Chevy has sold 22,772 trucks and Ford has sold 27,630 trucks....
