Future Truck: 2013 GMC Sierra 1500

Future Truck: 2013 GMC Sierra 1500
Rendering by Mark Stehrenberger for PickupTrucks.com

Because GM has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to redesign its full-size pickups, we asked renowned automotive illustrator Mark Stehrenberger to take a stab at what these trucks could look like when they debut around 2013.

First up, the next-gen GMC Sierra 1500 half-ton.

We're told by sources that the Sierra will look significantly more different from the Chevrolet Silverado than it does today. The new Sierra features the new 3-bar grille that we've seen in spy shots of the 2011 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty pickups -- which officially debut next month at the NTEA Work Truck Show in St. Louis -- and styling cues from the blocky "urban-industrial' GMC Granite small people-mover concept that debuted at the Detroit auto show last month. A sleeker exterior is expected to contribute to improved gas mileage. GM is also studying whether automatically opening and closing the grille inlets of its full-size pickups could improve aerodynamics and mileage.

Powertrain improvements are expected to include wide use of direct injection across the Sierra's engine lineup including, we're told, a (maybe 7.0-liter?) new large-displacement V-8 gas engine. GM's next-generation full-size hybrid technology will also arrive by 2013, with more-efficient, stronger electric motors and batteries, giving the gas-electric trucks up to 50% better towing capacity.

Like their 2011 heavy-duty brothers, the next-generation Silverado and Sierra light-duty pickups will ride on all-new frames. Expect the HD pickups to receive all new sheetmetal that's similar to the light-duty pickups.

Just tell me when somebody builds a full size (I'm 6'7" long with 2 teenagers) crew cab, well equipped, 'not ugly' truck that for under $35K gives me at least 26city-mpg/32highway-mpg, and 320 hp/350 torque, and I WILL BUY IT.

I don't care if it is GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Toyota or Nissan...or if it's manufactured in USA, Mexico, Canada, Japan or Brazil.... of course I would prefer buying it from GMC.............

LMAO the 5.0L by Ford just about matches GM's 6.2L!!

Oh, BTW why is it that GM won't match that 6.2L up with a lower ratio rearend or put it in their HD line up?

Ford This and Ford That. Give me a break. Unless I am reading something wrong the the subject is about a Future GMC Truck!!
I think that 2013 Sierra looks very cool. The big problem I see is that GM needs these future trucks NOW. By the time they come out with this and all the other cool stuff they show us it will be old news and the "Thrill Is Gone". Can you imagine this Truck at the dealers now with some bad ass killer motor?

Ford-Guy,

LOL at the 4.6 out-pulling the 5.3... keep the lies coming buddy, im laughing my a** off.

Ford trolls never get old...

I really wish that GM would reap the fruits that it has sown with Ford. Both Ford and GM spent money on coming up with the reverse heads design, and cooperated on the basic architecture of the engines. It's too bad only ford is using the technology in the Scorpion. GM can put out the baby D-Max, but some dumb knuckle head analyst who doesn't understand the customer base is saying that it isn't worth it. The engine's already done, ford is moving forward with its small diesel, only in Europe. I really would love to own a 1/2 ton diesel. 250-300HP and 400-500 lbft of torque is more than enough for most pulling duty.

Also, another comment on Turbo+direct Injection. I happen to drive around an Ecotec 2.0 in a 2 door coupe. The engine is extremely stout, it has lots of torque down low, it pulls like a diesel. The only thing I hate about DI is the loud tick of the High Pressure fuel pump. VW's have this issue as well, I don't have any experience with Ford's ecoboost. But I think an ecoboosted V-6 will surprise many users with its grunt. I really wish GM would use its experience and transfer its tech towards its trucks. GM has been doing DI + Turbo longer than ford, but Ford has the catch "Ecoboost" moniker to go with its approach.

The F-150 5.4 has more torque than the GM 6.0

Many interesting posts.
1. "Big Brother" and OnStar - OnStar itself is a useful feature. It can easily be abused. Homeland Security can get a court order throught their courts. No public knowledge or recourse. They can then use OnStar to track you, and guess what - that handy little speaker used to talk to the OnStar people can be used to eavesdrop on your conversations. OnStar can also be programmed for speed enforcement. The GPS says you are in a 40 MPH zone and it generates a speed of 50 MPH - voila: a traffic violation with hefty fine show up in the mail.
2. The GMC 6.2 L doesn't produce full HP and Torque unless it's been run wide open for 6 seconds (if I recall correctly). It's part of their fuel saving programming.
3. I always laugh at the auto companies when they say "ALL NEW". Most of the time the only "all new" stuff is cosmetics.

Lou,
Where did you get this info? Onstar never disclose any info unless requested, I my self tripple the posted speed limit with Onstar equipped vehicle, guess what? No ticket NEVER will it will. And for your information, they can listen to your conversation through your cell phone, and determine your speed even if your phone is off.

"LOL at the 4.6 out-pulling the 5.3... keep the lies coming buddy, im laughing my a** off.

Ford trolls never get old..."
I like it when they show there true IQ. It makes it eaiser to understand what I'm trying to talk with.

"The F-150 5.4 has more torque than the GM 6.0." Yeah if you run it on e-85 and get 12 mpg while doing it. The 5.4, inch for inch, gives the least HP and TQ numbers while also returning the worst MPG in its class. It needs to be replaced.

@Lex - it is hypothetical, as in theory or possible application. I read a story on current technology and speed enforcement could easily be done with a system such as OnStar.
I did not say they were doing it!
And like you said: quote "Onstar never disclose any info unless requested" - a court order would be a request that cannot be denied.
Have a nice, safe, comfortable drive home in your OnStar equiped vehicle;)

Lou and Dave are killing this blog with their anti-GM posts. What's the problem with you guys are you scared that GM is more technologically advance than Ford???? The only thing that's idiotic are your bs statements about GM technology. GM is more advanced than Ford. The evidence is overwhelming! Chevy and GM Rules! and Ford drools! How do you like those apples?

@bobby1971 - have you read the entire thread? I don't think so.
Did you read my first post? Here it is:
The grill on this concept looks like it came off of a Ford Super Duty:) This looks a lot like the GM unibody concept truck.

I think it is a good idea for GM Corp. to come up with very different Silverado's and Sierra trucks. That would end the whole rebadged Chevy argument and give consumers a real choice between the two GM Corp. offerings. I like the Sierra look much more than the Silverado's look.
I like the idea of automatic grill openings. I've run winter "Fronts" on several of my vehicles in the winter. It would speed up warm up and improve MPG. A win/win situation.
That doesnot sound Anti-GM.

My post about technology was not an anti - GM post. It was a comment on the potential abuse of technology by government. The OnStar system is a very sophisticated, quality system, BUT it can easily be abused by government.
My comment about GM's 6.2 is fact. One of the auto magazines/e-zines put it on the dyno and got lower numbers than they should of. GM told them it was because of how it was programmed.
My subsequent post was in reply to Lex challenging the information I posted.
You should go hang out with BOB.

"You can say what you want, but even Fords new 6.2L doesn't match the power of GM's 6.2"

Ford Boss 6.2L:
411 hp @ 5500 rpm
434 lb·ft @ 4500 rpm

Gm 6.2L:
403 @ 5700rpm
417 @ 4300rpm

Looks like it matches it pretty well to me.

Looks like your numbers are WRONG!!

Refer to the front page of this site.

Go back to the drawing board

too much grill...too much wheel well flare.

like the current look better
some redesigning and it should be ok.

I'd be happy if for once GM finally led the pack in making it possible to have 34"-36" tire packages at the stock height. Give me a two piece fender design that allows for a street fender with a smaller opening for those who like street trucks and an off road fender for use of tires that the Z71 should have in the first place.

Is it me or a matter of opinion that the Fords are about the ugliest thing on the road and the 2011 f 250 is the king of ugly. And why come out with bigger engines when gas here in NY is 3.05 a gallon. Why do we not get it. Bigger Bigger Bigger and then the whole planet hears we Americans bitch about gas prices, Dah !

Its overall appearance only tells half of the story of what direction this truck is heading in, like the C7 Corvette Concept itself, no one outside of GM at this point, can give an accurate discription of the production Pick Ups overal styling, with elements from the GMC Terrain and Granite I'm praying that the peices would fit in perfectly for the actual model.

gm has to copy the leader ford in design ford always changes there truck design more then any other make way to go ford keep up the good work

Why do GM fans like oleq7anbz use the Super Duty power figures on the 6.2 to compare with the Chevy half-ton 6.2? There is NO Silverado HD available with the 6.2. So you can only compare the Ford 6.2 Super Duty with the 6.0 Silverado HD. You can compare the 6.2 F150 with the Silverado HD. That's just using common sense here, come on guys.

The exterior front end design has too much of a close resemblance to that of the Honda Ridgeline and The Toyota Tundra, be interesting to see how the actual model itself, would appear from this drawing.Like the Super Duty compares to the F-150, lets hope the Next Generation Heavy Duty model for this Sierra can have its own destinct appearance from that of the 1500 model.

@LEX: Bro get off your High Horse, you're so full of crap. 23 mpg with your 5.3, yeah while being towed. Get Real. You sound like the kid who said he maid 1000hp in his Honda Civic, Figure of Speech. It's funny the ramblings about GM's Superiority to Ford, Just shows how Ignorant peole can be from truth. Freedom of Expression I Guess???

@LEX: Regard your comment "I just had a biggest laugh of the DAY....
ford can't even touch GM engines, they and always were far more advance then fords. In fact many people intall them in their fords!!! I don't think that ford even have DOD, GM also came to the market with flexfuel. Heck ford copyied 6 bolts per cylinder, since ford engines always bust their head gaskets."

Just wondering did your parents let u use the computer today? A True Ford Enthusiast would never install a Chevy into a Ford at all cost. This situation only arises in restoration projects and occurred a lot particularly in the past due to it's affordability to build and availability of parts. Times have changed and many builders are restoring Fords with Ford Parts Motors. Even companies like Edelbrock among many provide custom built Ford Crate Motors, something that was not available as affordable in the past. Surprise, A properly designed motor does not necessarily need 6 bolts per cylinder. 4.6 and 5.4 motors are capable of in excess of 1000hp. The Modular line IMO holds an advantage over Chevys old school push rod motor
In the bottom end department. Modular motors are actually relatively reliable aside from the spark plug fiasco that was solved many years ago, with many exceeding 250K miles.

Losing weight like using aluminum for some bodyparts or composites ,why are trucks always have to grow bigger and heavier?

Everyone,

Who cares about what engine can perform better on a spec sheet. There are two things that dictate ford is worse.

1) Trassmision (minor point)
2) FORD DOES NOT HAVE A 5 YR/100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty

Aka Ford doesn't even trust the DURABILITY of their own product. Sorry all you Ford guys there is no argument for this.

the best gmc sence the 80s models

Its ugly. If it gets made I might have to switch to dodge or stick to my old chevy. Screw ford.

Does anyone know when the new body style will come out? I know they have been the same from 2007-2012. I was wondering when the new style will be available at dealerships?

really dislike this model of trucks they are just coming out with stupid nonsense vehicles what happend to normal trucks? a truck should look like a truck not like a cartoon creation.

Someone should get a grip build a real truck

all the people saying that ford engines are better then gm engines consider this.
gm has sold over 100,000,000 ls/sb engines making it the most used single engine in the WORLD. taking the lead from the former rover v8. if this isn't proof enough look at americas sports/supercars. ford gt mid-engined biiiig v8, dodge viper front engined really big v10, chevy corvette front engined smaller v8, saleen s7 mid-engined mustang v8, hennesy venom gt mid-engined corvette v8, mach7 falcon mid-engined corvette v8, saleen s5s raptor mid-engined ford v8, mosler mt900 mid-engined corvette v8, htt plethore (okay technically canadian but i'll count it) mid-engined corvette v8. and ther are some european cars with the ls v8's in them to.
