Update 2: Recall Alert: 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Recall Alert: 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota is voluntarily recalling approximately 8,000 four-wheel drive Tacoma pickups to fix a potential problem with the front propeller shaft, a Toyota spokesman said today. The issue: a crack can develop in one of the joints that may lead to the driveshaft separating and falling away from the truck, causing the vehicle to lose control. The problem can occur without warning, according to a Toyota recall bulletin sent to Toyota dealers today.

The front prop shaft sends power to the truck's front wheels when it's in four-wheel drive. Two-wheel drive pickups are not included in the recall, according to Toyota.

The condition was discovered during the manufacturing process of the front prop shaft at the supplier, Dana Corporation, that you may recall was also involved in the frame rust recall issue with first generation Toyota Tundras.

The affected Toyota Tacoma models were produced from mid-December 2009, to early February 2010.

"Most of the vehicles [included in the recall] are in the pipeline in Toyota's distribution system or on dealer lots," Brian Lyons, Toyota's head of safety communications told PickupTrucks.com on Friday afternoon.

Toyota dealers will perform a 10-minute visual inspection of the trucks included in the recall, according to the dealer notice. Based on the results, the prop shaft may be replaced at no charge to the customer. Toyota will notify owners by mail starting by mid-March.

Owners may also contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center (1-800-331-4331) for additional assistance.

Update #2 February-12-2009 11:05 PDT:
According to the Detroit News
- Lyons said the cracks in the prop shaft are invisible to the eye.
- Dana Corp. disclosed the defect to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday
- The same part is used in a limited number of Ford and Nissan vehicles, including Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs.

Plain and simple. The parts that are being used on other vehicles from the same manufacturer (CTS) and don't have recalls, are designed different then the parts that have been recalled. Design comes from Toyota, the gas peddle is Toyota's fault.

The more I get the updates about this issue, the more I think this is Dana's baby. I do expect to see a recall for the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner, unless those vehicles, which are front wheel drive, have different standards.

@Bill

"I think the reality is the fat ,lazy americans are making parts to the specifications given to them by toyota."

The article says nothing of this, it says manufacturing PROCESS which translates into Dana's process that messed up. I work for a heavy truck maker and VENDORS make mistakes all the time building parts we design, it's their fault not ours!

Dana is at fault here and they will pay for this recall...

@supercrew2

Do not compare Japan and China please! That shows ignorance on your part, way different cultures and manufacturing standards!

Floormat issue was born from STUPID drivers that do not know how to drive properly and a money-hungry lawyer and a sue-happy society is to blame, all craving for a quick buck!

I still have my original floor mat (with hooks on them which I broke off because they are silly) and an aftermarket one over that one, YET NO PROBLEMS!

@Bill

"Toyota spec the metallurgy and dimensions for the parts. Dana makes the parts to Toyota's specs. Why aren't Dana parts failing on other companies products? I guess, Jean, it must be the fat, lazy Toyota engineers over in Japan."

And where does it mention Toyota specs in the article?

It states in plain English, MANUFACTURING PROCESS" which is Dana's problem and fault!

Stop twisting the article around to suit your Toyota bashing please!

Dana is at fault because they messed up building these parts and cannot keep their quality in order, so Dana will pay the cost of this recall for their failure of their MANUFACTURING PROCESS!

@Axel

"Perhaps the mass-hypnosis that made so many Americans think that japanese cars were superior is finally starting to fade. Any honest person knows American cars, particularly GM, have been superior for many years."

Toyota is still solid in quality and reliability, that is why I am a repeat customer the last 15-20 years and I am planning to purchase a Tacoma again soon...

The competition does not offer what I seek in a smaller pickup like the Tacoma does. The Ranger is too small and I question the torsion bar placement and rear lower shocks...

The Dakota is not attractive with its boxy look and lack of ground clearance and ease to build one for off-roading and rear lower shock mounts as well as torsion bar placement...

The Colorado is too small, do not care for the inline 5 cylinder and the rear lower shock mounts as well as torsion bar placement...

With the Tacoma I can get so many more configurations and models including the PreRunner option or the X-Runner option. Many choices with the Tacoma when compared to the other brands!

By the way why is this site so Toyota recall happy when Honda just recalled some SUV's for airbag problems yet no article?

Hmmm makes me wonder who this website is working for?

No article on Suv's? Hmm. Could it be this website is called PICKUPTRUCKS . com ?

@ oxi
The only time you post anything on this site is when it is something bad about toyota. If you can not handle the truth that toyota sucks a huge fat one, you need to go to another site crybaby! Toyota is at fault. You have been brain wash by toyota just like the others. Go down to the local ford dealer and get deprogramed, they can help.

@Oxi: We are not happy about the Toyota recalls. Nor do we go out of our way to specifically cover them.

At the bottom of the post, you'll find a "recalls" tag. Click that and you'll see our full recall coverage for every make/model.

Oh man, here wo go with more Totota bashing. Very entertaining.

@motum - If Toyota design specs were at fault with the gas pedal recall why weren't gas pedals from Denso recalled?
The only difference between the Denso pedal and the CTS pedal was the wiring harness.
Why did Ford halt production and sales of commercial vans in China that used a CTS pedal similar to Toyota's design?

"The Tacoma pickup shafts were built by supplier Dana Corp from December until early this month, a US government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Dana told the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, a government agency, that it was going to handle the shaft recall on vehicles built for automakers Ford, Toyota and Nissan, the official said.

This was "because they had discovered a defect in their manufacturing process," the official said.

"So it looks like, out of caution, Toyota decided to submit its own recall notification to us because technically, the vehicle manufacturer is responsible for recalls.""

In other words while Toyota is recalling their Tacoma's for a supplier built problem (manufacturing process at Dana), Ford and Nissan continue to act like nothing has happened!

Expect a recall of Ford and Nissan pickups soon by the federal government according to AFP.

Again guys, supplier defect, NOT Toyota's fault!

You can argue Toyota's decision to use Dana as a supplier but this defect falls squarely on the shoulders of Dana and Dana will pay the cost of the recall...

oxi,
So are you as forgiving when a domestic manufacture has recalls due to its vendor ? And what about your conspiracy theory (a ploy to sabatoge Toyota) C'mon man wake up,but it is proven the journelists started to put down domestics and praise imports for just being that imports..Non-American,that is true,no conspiracy theory at all,its proven especially with Toyota's even Honda's issues and even the ones purely Japanese are in major trouble,rolling time bombs/lemons!!

My parents bought Toyota since the 80's (both worked at Toyota)and I remember our new 85 Toyota that wouldnt start in the winter,faulty carbs,one after the other.Then the 90's bad head gaskets,among other problems,late 90's V-6 engine's had engine sludge well into the mid 00's and people are being blamed by Toyota that they dont change their oil on time ..b.s even with dealer receipts proving they changed it !! Then ball joints,transmissions,rust on Echo and Sienna vans including bad welds on its vans doors,then rusty truck frames,camshafts,bad welds,cracking tailgates,excelleration problems,braking problems,driveshaft problems..now The new Corrolla doesnt steer at highway speeds !! Toyota should be done after this !! But ignorant people who will still buy them no matter what !!

Funny myself and other close family members drive domestics and never really had big problems,sure we had some minor issues on some but most were problem free well into the 200,000 mark !! My current line-up includes 98 Lincoln Mark 8 runs strong at 175,000 my 2004 Hemi Dodge Ram 1500 runs stronger at 140,000(not 1 issue ever,none..),my wife's 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi never missed a beat and no unscheduled dealer stops were ever done with just 70,000 its hardly broken in !! By the way my parents no longer drive Toyota,they now own a Chrysler 300 and a Buick Enclave,and no dealer stops within the first years of ownership, unlike 65% of their new Toyota's over the years.I know its anecdotal ,but I worked throughout the 90's at Toyota and personally seen the problems they have.

Toyota for too long rode on b.s reliabilty/quality claims,we all can see Toyota cannot make mass produced vehicles..If they were as good as journelists claim,I would of always bought them,who wants to pay 50 grand for a vehicle and it doesnt last 4 years ? Not me !!

And please people,stop insinuating people are un-educated,cant read,cant spell because we tell the truth about Toyota.We are not ignorant and we accept the fact Toyota has made lousy products over the years and gets praise for reliable vehicles.I am a small business owner,well read and proud domestic vehicle owner,after a decade and a half of watching my parents suffer with unreliable Toyota/Lexus products I am glad they have a reliable vehicle today !

wow the Taco now GOOD GOD never getting a Toyota as long as i live unless its a old school land cruiser... now those things are awesome

Dang! Another Toyota recall. Let's up sales of the Honda Ridgeline by trading in the Tacoma! LOL

@Markn

"And please people,stop insinuating people are un-educated,cant read,cant spell because we tell the truth about Toyota"

This recall is about defects from Dana's MANUFACTURING PROCESS, this has nothing to do with Toyota, Dana built the defective parts and Dana will cover the cost's of fixing all affected Tacoma's...

The media has brainwashed you guys to believing even if the article spells it out in plain English that it was Dana's MANUFACTURING PROCESS at fault, not Toyota that you will continue to bash Toyota for no reason...

I am still awaiting for the recall of Ford and Nissan pickups that use the same parts. Toyota for their part recalled their pickups while Ford and Nissan continue to act like nothing has happened!

I like my Audi A4 ... hell with the domestics + Toyota !

sorry major correction hell with GM + Dodge + Toyota.. Ford seems to be shining brightly day after day ! Stock is rising.

Everybody says their favorite brand is the best or "domestics" are better than Japanese, or Japanese vehicles are the best.
No one seems to be commenting on the JD Power statistics I posted.
It spells it out pretty clearly as to which brands are at the top.
All the pickups are supposed to be around "average". In my books 170 problems per 100 vehicles sucks big time.
That means you will have to get your vehicle fixed 5 times in the first 3 years of ownership. (Not exact, I know, but pretty close)
It should be "0" ZERO per 100 for the first 3 years.

Frankly those statistics don't mean much Lou. We don't know the seriousness of the problems. It also doesn't take into account problems that may have been fixed by dealers without the public knowing about them (as someone alleged Toyota has done for years). I think it would've been more useful if they'd measured "average down time per year" instead. I mean if you've got a vehicle that doesn't run or isn't safe to drive and you spend 6 months waiting for a back ordered part that's more serious to me than the power windows not working.

@markn,

If what your are stating is true, why 80% of Toyota vehicles over 20 years are still on the road? If you worked for Toyota why are not you working now for them? As far as I know Toyota has great benefits and treats its employees very well. Remember 80% of Toyota vehicles over 20 years are still on the road. I had a Cavalier that lasted 12 years and a Toyota Celica that has 16 years with me and still running.

@ Enjelus - your are correct that the statistics do not indicate the severity of problems. Are they meaningless?
Definitely not. They do give an indication of the overall quality control of the vehicles manufacturers build. Most of the brands on the list are close to the industry average. That would indicate overall quality is okay. It will be interesting to see how Toyota fairs next year. They are on the way down.
Ford on the other hand is on the way up. Ford sales are up, Ford is making a profit. If you look at the "big picture" I'd buy a Ford. They currently are the only "Domestic" company that seems to be doing everything right.

Lou, so you are saying that a vehicle that comes in once for a blown motor or trans is less severe then a vehicle that comes in 3 or 4 times for a faulty window motor?

@freddy
"If what your are stating is true, why 80% of Toyota vehicles over 20 years are still on the road?"

Hey where have I heard that before? hmmm. OH! YA!
The latest commercial from TOYOTA! So if toyota said their cars fly, would you believe them?

So does that mean that you are going to buy a Ford truck because they said in their commercial that they have more trucks with over 200k miles still on the road?

@ Yats -I haven't had the chance to look up JD Power's research criteria and what they defined as a "problem". I agree that a blown motor is more serious than a power window that doesn't work. I posted the data because the "my brand is best" or "your brand sucks" arguement usually rages on without any concrete evidence.

I think some of you need to do some back ground checking at goings on with Dana before you jump on the bash Toyota bandwagon. Dana makes the rear diffs for the Titan. What has been the problem area? The rear diff. What has been failing you ask? The Dana made spider gears that were done using a powdered metal process. Ring and pinion have been fine in most cases. I have yet to read of a failure of any Titan owner running a Detroit Tru Trac. Guess what parts the Tru Trac gets rid of? Yup, the spider gears. Fwiw it is a 9" ring and should be fine for a 1/2 ton so please don't try going down that road.

What most people don't know is that Dana Corp. makes products for not just Toyota but the big three as well and other automakers.

I think its clear, Dana sabotaged the prop shafts to make Toyota look bad!

Hey all you NASCAR fans out there, all these Toyota recalls are good news for racing. All those wrecks last year caused by Kyle Bush and Denny Hamlin were probably caused by sticky gas pedals and bad brakes. Maybe better racing this year.

What kind of "Fact Checking" was done on this article
Your article states: "From Detroit News"
"the same part is used in a limited number of Ford and Nissan vehicles, including Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs."

DETROIT NEWS STATES:
The part was on 14,300 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner models and 11,185 Nissan vehicles.

There were only 8,000 Tacoma's
From The Detroit News: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100212/AUTO01/2120458/1148/AUTO01/Toyota-recalling-2010-Tacoma-trucks#ixzz0ffTEibZ6

What the heck kind of bias and sensationalism are you putting out.

@Truth in Media: I'm sorry, but what's your point? All of our facts in the Tacoma recall story are correct *plus* we have a quote from Toyota.

If you're referring to the title of the post, it's the same as 500+ other outlets published.

I agree to Mohamma Ahmed's comment. I forecast that the U.S. transport department is in for a big surprise. It will be proved beyond dopubt that they are talking to the lobbyist appointed by GM/Ford. Just recently there was a big re-call on Ford Mustang but this news got just a routine treatment
by the media.
My 2nd forecast, Toyota will go after the GM/Ford in a big way after Mid March'2010.

@Daniel,

I got the information from the USDOT. I have not seen the Toyota commercial, but let me guess, you might have time to waste by watching tv. Not me. In addition, I know several people that still driving Toyotas from the 80's and some from the 70's. I just gave to my daughter my 1994 Toyota Celica, which I own since new. This vehicle still in mint condition and has never have any problem with it.

For those who are bashing Toyota, I do not think your comments or beliefs will affect Toyota at all. Here is one of the several polls I have seen since the recalls' news.

http://wsbradio.com/cgi-bin/vpolls/pollVote.cgi

Given the recall and the solution offered, would you feel safe driving a Toyota?
Yes. Once the repairs are made it should be fine. 75%
Are you kidding? No way. 25%

"I know several people that still driving Toyotas from the 80's and some from the 70's"

I know several people that still drive Fords and Chevys from the 80's, 70's, 60's... Until about 2 years ago my daily driver was a 68 Ford. Get back to me in another 10 or 20 years about your '94 Toyota :p

Jeep has had aproblem for over TEN YEARS with uncontrolable acceleration. I have witnessed it and many others have too! Our International carwash assoc. met with Chrysler executives about the issue and they have been DENYING it for YEARS. NOW LOOK they went bankrupt and bought out by the CLOWN CAR CO> FIAT!!!!!!
Toyota has the STONES to admit a problem, THEY WILL SURVIVE> TRUTH UBERALLES!!!

I had a 78 Corolla wagon, ran 200K into the ground, had an 81 corolla sedan, same deal. My wife had an 87 Celica, best car ever. So I bought a 2010 Tacoma, within 3 months I have 3 recalls.

I told myself I would never buy another american car because of the fat lazy bastard thing (I'm in Boeing country, full of lazy fat machinists who really don't want a job)

But apparently, and ignorantly I did. Heck, China's knock off parts would probably work better!

I might say that toyota was proactive on this and not like the flaming gm trucks of the 80,s or the bick lighter fords that exploded when hit from the rear . It did not take hundreds of deaths and investigatios from the various gov,t departments to make toyota to get on board and deal with their problems . I definatlly feel safer in my tacoma than i do in my ford ranger and chev ssr

I'll stick to my VW. Germany is the best ... except for that whole Nazi thing. Best engineers in the world. Personal preference at the least. I will say I'm sick of people bashing America in any way or Americans. It's funny how people forget and don't pay attention to everything that this great country has done and tries to do for the world. We do everything we can, even as we are bashed and unappreciated. We can't help everyone, and it's gotten to the point where we should really be focusing on ourselves, but we continue to stretch our resources to help as many as possible. Let's not mention all of the people who make money here and leave the country with it or send it home. I wonder what the world would say about Americans if we withdrew entirely from the world and closed our borders. This is a bit extremist but think about it.

Recent Tacoma recall resulted in the service department removing my all-weather floor mats. Two days later they provided a thin/poor quality mat that does not protect the area around the vehicle gas and break pedals. When I told them I wanted my old mats returned, they told me they could not do that.

Wow! Toyota really missed the mark on customer service.

After all is said and done it comes down to the chain of fiscal responsibility . . . in the end no matter how you shake the tree the rotten fruit settles to the bottom , forced down by the fresher fruit falling from above... We are no longer the united states of america... We have become the untied sectors of advertising... Your # is in a data base ... What happened to the value of pride in an honest living in this country? Made in America used to mean something... Now from all the talk and media that meaning has changed, it seems to me the new meaning of made in America has cone down to a simple 1 word definition: Greed...

@ I'm still stund from some of the comments about fat, lazy americanized union making bad parts. I've been in manufacturing for years. When parts are made for autos, most of the times there are 2 venders. You can't run your assembly plant waiting on parts from 1 vender, that's a disaster waiting to happen. Talking about americans making bad parts for toyota is just plain brainless for saying that. If the part is made from a fat american for toyota I'm 90% sure that the bad parts are from bad designs and that my friends are from JAPAN...........
