Toyota Announces Plan to Fix Accelerator Pedals

Toyota Announces Plan to Fix Accelerator Pedals
By David Thomas

Toyota says a steel reinforcement bar will fix sticky accelerator pedals in 2.3 million vehicles recalled two weeks ago, including 2007-10 Tundra full-size pickups. The company will start to send the necessary parts by the end of the week and says some dealers will stay open 24 hours to accommodate such a large number of owners affected by the recall.

By far the most daunting aspect of the recall was not stopping sales or halting production — assembly lines will go dormant this week until entirely new pedals reach them — but tackling the enormous number of cars and trucks already on the road.

Toyota is in an all-out media offensive to get the word out that it has come up with a remedy, but it’s unknown how big an impact the recall will have on the car-buying public.

A steel reinforcement bar eliminates the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick

However, it’s almost unprecedented for a recall to be announced and remedied in less than two weeks. Toyota says it is already training technicians on how to repair the cars, trucks and SUVs under the recall.

Notifications should be going out later this week. If you own a Tundra covered under the recall, we recommend contacting your dealer to find out when it is expecting the parts and see if it’s possible to schedule your service ahead of time.

The sticking accelerator pedal recall is separate from the on-going recall of 2007-10 Toyota Tundra and 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma pickups to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place accessory floor mats.

The Toyota Tacoma is not included in the sticking accelerator pedal recall.

Mark,

Not gonna happen, I never listen nor trust the federal government!

They know nothing but react from a media obsessed with this issue. This is nothing but money-hungry lawyers looking to gain a buck on the richest auto company on the planet during a down economy!

I am not a sheeple!

@ oxi

I typically don't trust people that can't spell.
Race on bro, race on.

Tundra sales are down, big time: 40.2 %,
even Tacoma sales took a hit: -4.1 %
The Tacoma wasn't even in the recall.
Toyota needs to release a new Tundra to try to separate themselves from all the negative publicity/problems associated with the 2007 - 2010 Tundra.
They need to come clean on all their problems, and start off with a clean slate.
I like the Tacoma but it isn't much cheaper than a F150.
Ford's on the way up and Toyota is on the way down.
2010 is going to be a bad year for Toyota.

"I threw my recall notice away!"

That comment alone proves you are an idiot.

None of us could really care less about your "resume." On the internet its common policy for people who don't know what they are talking about to claim "expert credentials" in what ever subject they are arguing about. They think it gives them more creditability, but in reality it just makes them look like fools.

I know because I wrote my thesis on internet debating (not really).

Now they are saying there maybe problems with the brakes on the Prius.

The co founder of apple was on the news last night with basically the same problem in his prius and considers it a software problem and not just the gas pedal or floor mats. Also, did anyone else see the video of the toyotas ceo driving away in an Audi. What does that tell you. LOL

@Jeff - "What does that tell you?"
It tells me the same thing as GM and Chrysler executives showing up in Washington in corporate jets!
Stupid. Not good for PR.

If you guys cannot see this as an assault against Toyota by the Obama administration, you guys are blind and deaf!

First the federal government owns most of GM and I am sure they are putting pressure on the Obama administration as well as Congress to reign in Toyota especially after Toyota dominated and took the most for the cash for clunkers program!

These insiders from GM are pissed off and are seeking revenge for losing their #1 global status to bankruptcy and government welfare checks while Toyota continues to expand the world over and still make profits (just announced today).

This stupid issue clearly shows you how much the federal government will go to, to assist poor GM to compete again and how much they control the media to spread mis-information to panic the weak minds of society here!

More evidence is the stupid DOT Secretary retracting his statement as proof this has been orchestarted by the federal government to smear Toyota in the public's eye to bolster sales and stock value at GM!!!

Who owns GM?

The federal government does!

Who was the clear winner of the cash for clunkers program? Toyota was!

Now you can see why Toyota is on the hot seat everyday, it is a smear campaign by the Obama administration so their company GM could regain sales!

I have never seen recalls like this make such massive headlines on a daily basis. All manufacturers have had recalls lately concerning saftey, but only Toyota the world's #1 auto maker is getting the bad news!

Why? Because their is a movement against them by the U.S. federal government that owns GM and further emphasized by the U.S. DOT Secretary making bold statements and later retracting them after the damage has been done!

The U.S. government has done this in the past to cast a negative view of someone or something even you know it is false but by the time it is found out to be false, the damage has already been completed.

I have seen this before and the U.S. government is trying to destroy Toyota simply because Toyota is winning sales here against U.S. owned auto companies like GM. Don't for once think the U.S. government does not have that power or is willing to do this!

http://www.conspiracy-theories-hoax.com/government-conspiracy-theories.html

Here is a website you should go vent on because no one here cares about your conspiracy theories.

Also, an exclamation point is not the only way to end a sentence!!!

Really guys, all man-made products are going to have some sort of defects, no matter what you drive...it's just a matter of how products are manufactured and throughly inspected, and how they are driven and maintained. It's just so sad that even in a poor economy it's more about quantity than quality.

We are going to see more and more massive recalls as every manufacturer is going to "shared" or "universal" components.

Is the government "out to get" Toyota? I don't think so.
Is the government giving in to public pressure? Yes.
Does Toyota deserve the public scrutiny? Yes

I don't buy the whole "conspiracy theory" point of view.

The world economy has shifted from an industrial/business base to a "government" based enconomy. The massive bailouts, and takeovers of banks, and busineses have put many countries in the position of being more "socialist" than their communist neighbours. That is the opinion of many experts. I hope that governments rapidly extract themselves from the rightful domain of "private" or "publicly" traded business.

Oxi, there is no conspiracy, toyotas quality latley is crap. There tundra can not stand up the Dodge, Ford,Gm, in features and now quality, period. The government is not out to get toyota. This is there problem. Its called lack of quality, reliability and utter lack of concern for the public. What ever Toyota gets they deserve! This is no smear compaign. Not only will the domestics gain but also the Korean automakers, also Honda. This is finaly catching up to Toyota, bad tailgates on tundras, snapping cams, rust issues, now brake issues on there hybrids. What other facts do you need!

OXI,
Some Toyota/Lexus models are locked into drive, and the excelleration overides the braking system..

I also am an experienced driver as well ,race and drive 40,000 miles a year, but if the car doesnt shut off, stop or cant get it out of gear there is no amount of experience that can change the outcome !!! Especially in a crowded street with nowhere to go !!

Toyota is really going to hurt after this, and rightfully so,years of getting an easy pass by consumers and journelists they had major problems with engines, transmissions, rust now braking and throttle problems..Who in their right mind would even consider a Toyota ? You have to be not right in the head to buy a Toyota now and even the next 5 years,to ensure they have the issue fixed...Some even say the peddle sleeve fix is not the real issue, could be electronics (sounds more reasonable) if that is the case, still excelleration issues when the so-called sleeve fix is in and it turns out to be the computer/electronic system Toyota is finished..good ridence !!

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/100205/us/usreport_us_ford_fusion

I found this article from Canada Yahoo news about how Ford has kept quiet for months about brake problems on their Fusion and Milan hybrids!

Now why has not this made front page news or why hasn't the DOT opened investigations into Ford's brake problem?

This is more evidence of a smear campaign to dis-credit Toyota with the general public to help domestic brands re-gain market share!

Note the federal goverment (with the DOT making damaging statements) has a vested interest in helping GM because they were bailed out by them!

This whole issue has to do more with tarnishing the image of Toyota by the federal government and the media than actual fact. I have never seen such small issues become the obsession of the media or the DOT. This looks more like a deliberate campaign by the federal government to help their companies like GM get back on their feet because they just cannot compete with Toyota head to head!

Better be careful oxi, keep saying stuff like that and its only a matter of time before the NSA, CAI and/or MIB are knocking on your door.

Mark,

"STOP DRIVING NOW: Owners of recalled TOYOTA cars being told by feds to seek repair immediately...

Transportation Secy: Don't Drive Recalled Toyotas
LaHood Called Automaker 'A Little Safety Deaf' During Probe Of Problem"

Why did he retract his statement the next day? Seems political to me! And who owns the Chrysler Group and GM? And who does the UAW support?

"Toyota has faced criticism for not notifying consumers about suspected problems with the brakes on its Prius right away, but Ford waited until Thursday to announce possible braking issues though it had known about them for months."

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/100205/us/usreport_us_ford_fusion

Where is the outrage from the DOT Sec.? Why isn't this front page news? Why did I find this through Yahoo Canada and not a U.S. media outlet?

Oxi,
Some Toyota's/Lexus vehicles are locked into drive and the excelleration overides the braking system !!! I too am a professional driver, drag raced, off road raced, drag boat racer, snow mobile,airplane..If its got a motor I drove/flew it !! And if you are in a tight spot your cheap low quality Toyota product starts flooring it,you will crash, remember professional racers crash as well !! Let Toyota die in peace!! Stop standing up for a company that delayed and denied serious quality issues, obviously they do not car about its customers..Shame on Toyota and you are a dammed fool if you buy a new Toyota from now on in,they dont care about you !! They cram their low rent products on us,and Toyota even said their quality went down to become number 1 selling car company,so in essence Toyota is omitting they make unreliable, unsafe cheap, low rent cars and trucks !!!

Oxi here is another Toyota recall for you.
http://joe-ks.com/MultiMedia/ToyotaLawnMower.htm

I bought American cars all my life from Ford to Dodge. Every one broke down and cost me tons of money to fix. So, this time around, I bought a new toyota because I did not want my car to break down and I wanted a high resale value and now this. Someone give me a break.
