There's a New Hoss in Town

2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty FX4 Hoss Edition

We can’t share our first drive impressions of the new 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty until 12:01 am Monday March 8 but that won’t stop us from showing you pictures of the stout F-250 FX4 Hoss Edition project truck that provided off-road support.

Some of you may have seen an earlier edition of the Hoss Super Duty online or in magazines. Ford’s engineers created it as a one-off hardcore rock crawler that was armed with a 362 horsepower and 457 pounds-feet of torque 6.8-liter V-10 gas engine, aggressive departure angle bumpers, 17-inch wheels with Pro Comp Xterrains mud terrain tires, a winch and a custom locking rear differential. But cool as it was, the Hoss never made it to production as a challenger to the heavy-duty Ram Power Wagon.

Enter the new Hoss Super Duty. This time around it’s equipped with Ford’s new in-house designed and built 390 hp and 735 pounds-feet 6.7-liter V-8 Power Stroke turbodiesel, 17-inch wheels with BF Goodrich mud terrain T/As and a new factory-supplied rear locking diff that comes standard on the FX4 model. If the bumpers look familiar, that’s because they were recycled from the previous Hoss Super Duty.

During the ride and drive, the Hoss was called for duty while we were waiting for our turn on the off-road course. A standard FX4 found itself hung up on some boulders and the Hoss truck pulled it free.

Could the Hoss Super Duty find its way to production? For now, there are no plans, according to Ford execs on the drive.

Ford has made all kinds of buzz with the F-150 SVT Raptor go-fast baja-style truck. A heavy-duty pickup with a solid-front axle and a rear locker would be a tremendous counterpart. If you like the Hoss rig, let Ford hear about it here. Or buy a new Super Duty and make one yourself!

You GM guys can keep your IFS and cushier ride. The money i make replacing front end parts on your trucks pay for my ford. I would not want anything but a solid front end on vehicles this big and heavy. Everything about the front end just lasts longer-be it tires or front end componets.

I know when your a working guy and the look of the truck doesn't matter, just the specs, BUT THIS TRUCK'S LIGHTS ARE APPALLING!!! same with the f-150. maybe they should try making a Mustang-truck. hmmm....

This baby has run it's course but man it's still a nice truck even with the new Jeff Goldblum edition head lights up front. I think if if they would just bring in the new angular tailights from the 2010 F-150, that would really freshen up the overall appearance and get it out of the late 90's that's still so apparent even with this model. I don't know much about suspensions and IFS and SFA's, but I drove my uncles last year and this thing has been made for one reason, the toughest work truck ever made. Thats why you only see contractors using one model, the F250. If you need comfort, get a Cadillac, if you need the best work truck out there, get the F250.

This truck will be sweet ford trucks are simply the best !!! And thats why they out sell the ram by such a wide margin

I need a new truck to to move to in oregan. i am a ford guy but they still dont have any real set rig for forest and mudd country till this truck. i was thinking about dodge's power wagon but it doesnt come in a diesel.I hope ford will take it to the next the level because one else will and produce this rig. FORD IF YOU BUILD IT, WE WILL BUY IT...

wow the comment about saying rust is mud, considering a dodge would fall aprt before a ford on any day, and look @ the name PowerWagon looks like your just mad cause the powerwagon is crap, and dodge took a bail out like GM, Dodges are a failure that why old dodges are dead and gone, ford has made the best truck since ford was invented, americias pickup since 1917, oh I also seen a comment about not likeing the deep bed, are you retarded?? deeper the bed more you can haul, or tarp, ford makes the best trucks, people who dont like fords(the only real truck) canstop wineing about the dumbest things.

Nick, go easy on PowerWagon. He hasn't seen dirt before, so he is a little confused. That's why he likes the softer looks of the Dodge. Also trucks are just for looking at, so he would prefer smaller headlights, rather than big ones that turn night in to day like on the Ford. We should be silly for thinking functionality, no wonder he suggested making a Mustang truck, and no wonder he likes the Ram.

so mike, or other commenters, will his test drive of the new SD be posted at 12:01??? cus if so im stayin up to read it! do yall know anything about that????? any info would be great. THANKS

OUCH!! I was just joking about the dirt rust thing. Ford makes great trucks, but I am loyal to Dodge. it's tuff being persucuted for my beliefs.

Too bad this frond grill and lights look terrible. The new Dodge looks way more aggressive and has a beeter overall look. Come on Ford do a redesign please.

Hey, thanks Kevin. I'm not the only one.

I TOO WANT TO KNOW IF THE TEST DRIVE WILL BE POSTED AT 12:01!!! DOES ANYBODY KNOW????!!!!

The review is coming at midnight Eastern tonight. Grab some coffee, though. It's 5,000 words.

I'd rather read that story about a 2011 Silverado/Sierra HD.

when will that be available?

2011 superduty might be a great truck, but there is no way I would get it in the next 2 years, it has to prove it's reliabilty first. Besides 2011 GM HD's have better brakes and engine brake for heavy loads that I haul.

Yes. Its coming tonight at midnight eastern.

Kevin I agree, brand new, right of the dealer lot, Dodges have that beeter look going. Most other trucks take a good 10-15 years to get that look.

are we aloud to know if you liked the SD or not??

Why can't I buy a F150 4wd with a 300-350hp turbo charged diesel that will get 30mpg empty at 70mph??? This would sell big time.

If ford was to make a new HOSS i would by one because that this point they dont have anything to compete with the power wagon with off road capabilities. Ford could tap into a whole new market and make a truck that can do every thing and get its self out of any jam it can drive into.

Ford: Put a locker in the front differential, ditch those bulky aftermarket bumpers (keep the winch) and I would seriously consider trading my Dodge Ram 2500 Power Wagon for a Hoss!

Not that there is anything wrong with my Dodge. I love my Power Wagon. I just love Ford more than I do Dodge/Ram.
