Ram Trucks Introduces New 'Outdoorsman' Model for 2011

Chrysler’s Ram Truck Brand is introducing an all-new ‘Outdoorsman’ model for its 2011 light and heavy-duty pickups that’s aimed at truck owners who like to play hard outside when they’re not working hard with their trucks.

“We asked Ram Truck customers -- boaters, campers, fishing enthusiasts and hunters -- what features would they like to see in a truck,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “They answered ‘more capability, more room for my gear and ready to hit the trail. And make it affordable.'”

According to Chrysler, Ram heavy-duty owners are heavy outdoor enthusiasts. 47 percent hunt, 57 percent fresh water fish, 33 percent salt water fish, 36 percent own power boats and 37 percent tow camping trailers. Overall, 62 percent of full-size pickup truck owners hunt, fish or camp.

The Ram Outdoorsman combines off-road capability and trailer towing hardware in one package. Standard trailer-towing upgrades, interior and exterior convenience, lighting enhancements, all-terrain tires and underbody protection are combined with a rugged exterior appearance to highlight the new Ram Outdoorsman.

Ram 1500 Outdoorsman owners can add an optional gun rack / fishing rod combo holster that fits in the half-ton truck’s unique optional RamBox side saddle cargo box storage bins. The Mopar RamBox Holster ($205 option) can secure two rifles or shotguns, or it can be rotated 90 degrees to hold up to six fishing rods.

Outdoorsman buyers who select a Ram 2500 or 3500 truck will get a standard integrated trailer brake controller, which connects the truck’s electrical and brake systems with the trailers.

Exterior features include two-tone paint with Mineral Gray rocker panels and wheel lip moldings, scratch-resistant steel bumpers, black door handles and a large ‘Outdoorsman’ badge for the cargo box sides.

Outdoorsman-4-560

Ram Outdoorsman is available in 1500, 2500 HD, and 3500 HD single rear wheel, Regular Cab; Quad Cab, Crew Cab and Mega Cab; four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive; and short- and long-wheelbase models. It replaces the TRX4 trim level in the 2011 Ram Truck lineup. It will join the other Ram trim levels, which include: ST, SLT, Big Horn / Lone Star, Sport (1500 only) Laramie and Power Wagon (2500 only).

Prices for Ram Outdoorsman models start at $28,350, including destination charge. It will go on sale in the third quarter 2010.

Most every Ram I see still has the gun rack in the back window! LOL

Ram would be better off focusing on tangible improvments like higher gvwr etc for the tow crowd.

Now kick me in the as* - on the bed protection cover is written "DODGE" (see 3rd photo from the top)! Chrysler-Dodge-Ram marketing strategist (I do love Your truck but...), You've just being digging a hole under yourself...

Nice truck !

So the people knocking this I cant understand,Ford has limited edition trucks Harley,Cabela ect..they are the same just different colors ect..No difference from a F-150 4x4 to a Ford F-150 xtr,xlt very insignificant changes,Ford people you have no excuses.

bobsled80,
Actually Ford has a worse reputation for transmissions than Dodge,The only Dodge's that were bad was in 1995 ,they had a minor change, but they fixed that very quickly.Ford trucks were bad until the early 90's-00's and the Ford Winstar went out of production because of bad transmissions from the factory in throughout its history, instant failure(like Honda,Acura has)

Anywho,I repair Dodge transmissions Ford,GM and most trucks when used for work last 80-130,000 miles.Dodge's seem to be one of the better ones,I have noticed in my experience.Again ,depends on maint.driving style ect.Biggest reason for Dodge transmission failures is the wrong fluid, many people change it themselves or other shop put in wrong fluid and it will fail shortly after.

Sweet truck, leave it to Mopar to think of sweet packages,Ford and GM guys are tools for making fun of them ,jealousy is a bitch hey boys !I bought a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 and best truck ever.My neighbor (Chevy guy) fell in love with it,because he also bought a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 a co-worker bought a Ram TRX !!

Transmission/driveline Guy - There is a huge difference in the Harley Davidson F150 and the others. On the previous ones it was having a Supercharged engine. What Dodge did is add a gun/rod rack and a decal to the TRX4. Ranks right up there with making body colored trim instead of chrome and calling it a "sport" model.

I'm not bashing the truck, but as Matt pointed out -
Ram box = 1,895
gun/rod holder = 205
total = 2,100
There are many other cost effective alternatives.
I think that the overall package is a good idea, but for 1,895 the Ram box is way too pricy.
One could get a canopy, or many other accessories for that price.

I believe a Power Wagon with a gun rack would be the appropriate tool for the job. But then again, it wouldn't have that neato "Outdoorsman" sticker on it.

I believe Nissan has the right idea with the upgraded tie down system.

Ford has the idea with the awesome Raptor's suspension and 6.2 engine.

Dodge has the right idea with that awesome Power Wagon.

Toyota's got that supple frame to add to the suspension package's capability for absorbing hits.

Chevy's got, uh, GMC's got... uh, well, uh..... well, at least they've got my tax money, I suppose that's something.

I would never put one of my rifles in a Ram Box. They go in a case in the cab, climate controlled and secure.

This truck reminds me of the Jeep Wrangler Mountain. A sport model with a new paint job. No front Dana 44 like the Rubicon.

Buy a Raptor!!!

Hurryupnwait- Did you seriously just say that Toyota has the best frame? It's got the WORST frame in the class by far. Even Nissan has a stronger, full boxed, frame. Chevy/GMC has the Eaton locking differential standard. There's something!

Why is it every time there is a Ram story on this site all the Ford fan boys come and dump on it? Have any of you guys driven all the brands of trucks and basing your opions on that experience or do you just have nothing better to do? Good lord! No need to anwer, I already know what the answer is. As pro Ram as I am, the truth is anyone who spends the $1900 or so on the Ram Box just so they can get the gun rack/pole holder has more money than brains. Its probably safe to say that people who spend the big bucks for the Ram Box have a need for it (did you know that small people will fit inside?). Ford guys get upset when people make fun of the man steps but then turn around and do the same on the Ram Box. One last thing, saying the Ram Box is a bad idea because you can`t put canopies, or headache racks, etc on it the most flawed idea I`ve heard. Why buy a truck that doesn`t suit your needs? If you need a canopy obviously you won`t be spending money for a Ram Box as well. Come on guys, use your heads.

Outdoorsman package? Try putting a rubber mat on the floor instead of carpeting for starters.

That enormous badge is really unbelievably stupid looking. I've been shopping Ram TRX4s but I wouldn't buy this just because of that gigantic stupid badge.

Why can they not make the crew cab with a box long enough to hold a full size atv. I don't want a 2500 to have a bigger box.

and still no locking rear diff???? Ford and GM both offer them, yet Dodge isnt letting us have a locking diff unless we step up into a 2500 power wagon???? NO THANKS DODGE...Ford or GM it is

You "Brand Loyal" types bashing Dodge crack me up.
I was a "Chevy man" when I was a kid...then I grew up & realized Chevy didn't give a sh!t about me.
GM Sierra: just plain goofy looking, period.
Ford F-150: 2010 was the return of ugly, way too ugly to ever put in my driveway.
Dodge: best looking truck in the country these days, comes with a killer v-8, prices can't be beat. (And I can buy Fords pretty damn cheap.)

Dodge all the way - not a tuff choice in my opinion.

Buyer Beware!
I bought a new Ram 1500 Regular Cab Outdoorsman. The sticker on the truck said it had floor mounted shifter (it did not),it said it had 115 volt auxilliary plug (it did not),it said it had 10 way power seats and power lumbar adjust(it did not) I am now going round and round with chrysler to get reimbursed for those things, after I paid $33,455.00for the truck.Great truck but read the sticker.Oh, and you can not get any literature on the truck because the dealer did not get it yet.The Outdoorsman has been out since 12Aug.2010.Pretty stupid if you are comparing models.Do not believe the web site either. They tell you the options and they are wrong.Good luck on the phone because I was on hold for 1 hour and then they told me he left for the day.5 hours on the phone already and then I met with district rep and I knew more than him.you think that being bankrupt they would try harder oh well for the americanway.

I have to agree with most here I am a hard core dodge fan all the way but I cant see any thing on this truck that was built the way people want even there web site cant build a truck the way I want I think dodge is going down hill cant see buying a 50,000 dollar truck just to pay a nother 20,000 to make it the way I want when I can build pritty much what want on the ford site I mean were is the tow package a lift a manual trans with the gas motor all that stuff built truck for the outdoors man but still have to purchase the skid plates we are the coustomers they should bend over back words for us not us bending over for them they had it going on with the power wagon

I have this truck. I love it. When I was shopping I looked at the Big Horn and Laramie packages and there are lots of differences. The interior of the Outdoorsman is the same as the Laramie minus the leather seats. Where I live leather hurts...lmao. I have owned every body style since '99 and this truck is by far the most comfortable and handling truck Ram has produced.

I would never try to take sides or defend one brand to another but Dodge didn't do a great job telling all the options of the truck. Heavier rear susp, full skid plates, tow hooks, trailer towing package, fender flares, thick rubber floor mats, Two tone paint, monochrome grille(painted) fog lamps, 3.92 posi rear end, all terrain tires. As for the Ram box, I think it a bad idea as you can't use it if you have a canopy or small camper. The dealerships even think this as they won't bring any ram boxes in for the same reasons all above have listed. I bought a outdoorsman and love it, but think the decals kinda tacky, nothing a heat gun can't handle.

There are plenty (majority) pickups running without bed caps or shells. The Ram Box is still a great idea. If you plan on getting a bed cap or a shell, later on down the road, then just buy a truck without the Ram Box.

I wouldn't feel too comfortable driving around with guns pointed directly at me.

lol, you'd be an idiot to not turn the safety on or take the firing pin out. So if you do drive around with guns pointed at you and the gun goes off, aint the trucks fault, it is the owner of the guns fault who left either of those SAFE options out of the equation of guns pointing at a human being.

What's the price raange?

I had the rambox in my 09 sport, carried my golfclubs in there, carried my rifles in there during hunting season, I could still fit my quad in the box, I switched from 20 years of driving gmc's, when the 09 sport came out I fell in love with it, didn't even consider a ford, maybe an 08 but the new ones are butt ugly, they are finally catching up in the engine dept, and the fords are no more reliable than anything else depending on how you take care of them

Great looking truck, It's about time that a vehicle company paid attention to the thousands and thousands of outdoorsmen and women and came up with a vehicle designed to fit in the outdoors.

Cool ride for we outdoorsmen and women!

I bought one. hunter green, hemi, crew cab, no ram box. it has 3000km on it so far and i am getting 21mpg. i looked at ford, chev before buying this truck and it is by far the best bang for the buck. the sticker on mine was 44+ canadian and I bought it for 32+ + tax. you cant buy any other full size truck with these options for that price. I test drove the others and I think the dodge has the most power, 2nd best interior after the ford and its flat back seat and other than the chevs posted gas millage being better than the rest the dodge i value value value. If i was going to buy a ford or chev for 32+ i would not have any options. No big motor, no carpets, no bucket seats, no consel shift, nothing. say what you want price one and see if you will not buy one.

No offense to paul810, but Ford can't even get one turbo to work right on an engine so why add another?

its pretty obivious that none of you who makes comments about the guns, hunt, cause a number 1 rule when it comes to transporting wepons is unload, and securly lock. that means bolt or clip out and zip tie through the chamber

chevy man u can lick my left one and go mack out with your gay lover

Hi. A relative of mine got the 2012 6 speed auto version (no side boxes). My opinion on it is mostly on the CONS side.

Cons:

1: I'm 6'1" 200+lbs and even with the chair as far back and up or down my ankle is pushed backwards on the gas or brake pedal. Way too much of my weight on the pedals. I have to drive using my toes. The available space is actually quiet a bit less than the mid size old 2003 dodge dakota 4x4.

2: Fuel economy is not so great. It's 1 (one) mpg better than the dakota which is a gas hog to begin with.

3: There is an extra plastic windbreak under the chromed front bumper which ends up rubbing on the cement parking lot blocks at the local walmart. What's the use of being outdoors when you have the ground clearance of a smart car (tm)? As flat as that wind break is it does nothing for fuel economy except burn more gas.

4: The 4 cylinder eco mode on the 5.7 litre comes off far too often just like the ford ecoboost. Eco mode should be a forced manual set (button).

5: Very little storage space for regular tools when compared to the dakota.

6: No top tie down points in the bed, another additional cost to add.

7: Tail gate is made from some rather thin flimsy steel, but at least they did away with the dual latch problems of the Dakota.

8: Requires running boards (additional cost) to be used as a daily vehicle . Otherwise even a tall person will find getting into the outdoorsman a major chore.

9: Came with sirrius xm sat radio which is ok but for 200 channels and *only* a couple Canadian channels it's clearly not worth the price even if it was free.

PROS:

1: Smoother get up and go than the previous 5 speed

2: Dual inline exhaust for a very quiet ride.

3: 6'4" box with bed liner.

4: Decent center and glove box compartment space.

5: Very good GY silent armor winter grade tires.

6: Came with rear diff lock but just like the dakota getting out of 4wd or low is very finicky.

Dodge or Ram hasn't really improved their vehicles over the past decade . They focus on flashy options to attract buyers where they could fix something as important as weight shifting space so that you don't fall out of the truck when getting in.

Ford is not much better but they are trying. The Jeep division of Dodge is evolving to what people need. Believe it or not the Jeep patriot has more room for me than the full size dodge ram i reviewed above. You can imagine the WTF! moment i had when i seen that.

What erks me the most is the in Europe of just about everywhere except north america you can get truly excellent mid and full size trucks.

I came across a Toyota Hilux, and despite the fancy sounding name it's actually a Toyota Tacoma with a 2.5 or 3.0 litre diesel (manual/auto) that gets impressive fuel economy and 4x4 is not much more costly than 2wd models.

I managed to get one and i never looked back. Not to mention that toyota dealer rarely sees me. It did cost me the shipping to get it here but when you get 32-35 mpg combined it pays for itself in a hurry.

Offroad the hilux is so far ahead of the dodge ram that it's not even worth starting a comparison.
