Sources Say: Jeep Pickup Truck Coming for 2012

A version of a Jeep pickup shown to Chrysler dealers during a recent dealers meeting in Orlando, Fla., has been greenlit for production, according to PickupTrucks.com sources.

On Tuesday, Jeep CEO Mike Manley reportedly showed dealers a pickup truck that’s said to closely resemble the well-received Jeep Gladiator concept from 2005.

Industry sources have told us that production of the Jeep pickup is expected to start in the third quarter of 2011, with the pickup badged as a 2012 model. It’s said to be based on the four-door Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited platform but with a two-door regular cab configuration with extra space behind the front seats for storage.

Jeep hasn't offered a pickup for sale to consumers in North America since the 1992 Jeep Comanche ended production.

Manley told PickupTrucks.com in June that he was interested in small pickup trucks because of their popularity worldwide.

Todd Goyer, head of Jeep brand communication and product planning, said the company had no comment about the news of a Jeep pickup.

Our friends at FourWheeler are hearing similar rumblings about a Jeep pickup.

6' beds are best left for full size trucks. The Gladiator bed starts at 5' 8" and is expandable like all real mid size trucks should be.

Leave the hauling and payload for full size trucks. Mid size trucks are for mid size payloads. 6' beds should not go off road.

Unless it has the new Pentastar V6 that just went into the Grand Cherokee, it won't be worth having. The concept is great, but the current V6 is anemic and an insult to the Jeep Wrangler. Get the new engine in it, and we'll buy it, Chrysler.

This will sell about as well as the toyota fj cruiser.
cool looking, but doesn't really nail any truck niche.

There will never be a diesel or hemi Wrangler in our lifetime in the USA. Time to get over it.

ill take one and call it a jeep commanche

This had better not be another one of those BS plans to get auto consumers' hopes up -- like Jeep did before, and Mahindra -- and then renege altogether! At least Ford, for example, said that it's unlikely they will sell the new Ranger in the US, then folk can look elsewhere.

Oxi: GTFO, I bought a Tacoma over two years ago, and I absolutley HATE it. It's as big as my Ram 1500, drinks as much as my Ram 1500, and actually does less work than my Ram 1500. I was hoping for a small truck, and the Tacoma just doesn't cut it. I applaud Chrysler for having the guts to produce THREE small/mid-size pickup trucks by 2013.

P.S. The bad of my Tacoma is UNUSABLE, as nothing fits. It's way way overated. I don't even put 1,000lbs in, not to mention 700lbs, and next thing I know the fenders are touching the tire.

And another thing, the interior is full of hard plastics, and the rear seats are too small.

@A.J. I heard that too! I'm actually looking forward to the "Baby Ram". I'm going to look into this Jeep, and the "Baby Ram" as my next buy.

I hope they stick to the concept if they really make this. I wouldn't mind driving one of these things around everyday. I doubt we'd get the diesel option here but if we did I would be in line to purchase this vehicle.

Doesn't fill a truck niche?

Please try to find a small truck on the market today. All the smaller trucks keep growing every year. I have no desire to deal with the hasels of having a full size truck as my only vehicle. This will allow me to do 90% of what I wan a truck for without forcing me to get more truck than I need.

We'll see Larry, maybe I will be wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just don't think they will sell a ton of them and it will be gone in 5 years. Just my take.

better be a diesel

Untill the govt. takes it easy on diesel emmisions it will never get a domestic diesel. We are building the new diesel Wranglers now for export. We will be installing the new V-6 starting sometime after the New Year. People are screaming for a domestic diesel but it is so expensive with all the add-on's it has to have to meet U.S. emmisions. Things need to change.

If Jeep wants to sell me anything, it best have a Diesel option !!

@cjdred,

I moved my entire house (1,500 sq. feet) with my Tacoma to break in the clutch and I mean everything except the frige, bought a new one!

I had the Whirlpool washer and dryer along with the rental dolly all in the back of my Tacoma the same trip, who says it is not usable?

I had my couch (tailgate down) and the laz-z-boy on the same trip, who says it is not usable?

When I had my X-Runner I carried all of my race gear no problems!

You need to open your eyes and I doubt you ever owned a Tacoma!

oxi,
Why do you brag your Tacoma is so big now, before you said it was the only small truck but now I educated, informed you you know its the biggest truck in its category..bigger than a Dakota..

Yes anyone can fill any truck/car with stuff !!

I have a friend who owns and only drives late 1960's Chrysler 2 door's,he moved his washer and dryer in the trunk, still had a little room left in the trunk, back end didnt even sag much, very little, never even scratched the paint he is extrememly picky! he later towed a trailer a 1997 GMC 1/2 ton ,the cars were rated at 5,000 lbs or more, gets 24 mpg hwy and pulls low 13's at the drag strip with a 2.94 axle ratio, that is impressive !

This is why we need trucks today cars are completely useless, even so-called new large cars have ZERO trunk room !!

Nothing wrong with the Tacoma, not knocking your truck just informing you my friend. As you now know and you are proud of how big your truck is !! Good on ya ! If you drove a Prius I would have a huge problem, but you dont so good day, fellow trucker !

Gooey Bum,

I have owned only 1 car and it was a winter beater, the rest have been trucks the last 20 years 2 of which I raced with, both street legal one in Baja and the other with SCCA.

Make one and I'll buy one.

Looks nice, but let's hope the quality is higher than in the average Jeep product.

This truck is a great idea. I think that it will be a very big sucess and brink jeep back into the truck world which they used to dominate. I think they should give it a little more of the same looks as the Jeep Willys truck. I own a 1948 Jepp willys truck and i think this is a great come back from where they used to be.

This is great news – the Gladiator concept was a thing of beauty. However, this isn’t coming any time soon. Same thing goes for the next generation Ford Ranger and Mazda’s pickup. What will be here soon pending its legal battle is Mahindra with its clean diesel compact pickups. They just recently passed EPA certification so they are ready to go. I really don’t think that we’ll have to wait until 2012 to see the Mahindra trucks here! At least I hope not – the segment needs a wake-up call, not to mention a high MPG/high payload player. No one but Mahindra seems to have the guts to go for a diesel truck so I hope they succeed.

I'd buy that truck, it looks like it would be a great camping/bush rig, especially if it had the Rubicon package. I'd like it with a V6 diesel, or if they were to re-release the 4ltr HO I6, I guess I'd get by with a V8 too

If this actually comes out I might consider trading my Ram in for this instead of a cummins and if they decide to put the 4.7 in it I will be there at the dealer the day it comes out

All right! About time, I hope it is true. Get a diesel in there and how about the 305 hp pentastar V6? 2 and 4dr versions an I will be there with my check book! Make it happen guys!

Nice!! But bad Visability. Side mirrors are to small..Its alright to keep it off HWY just an off road or farm use..LOL

All I see here is a chopped Wrangler with a longer frame and pickup bed thrown on the back...

insanio

Rubcon package and an efficient turbo diesel and you have my money.

I hope to see this happen.
We'll look forward to seing them out on the trails with our club. Nicely done.

i seen one on the road

Nice and sign me up for a diesel with a bed tool storage cabinet that slides out the back and locks.

I'll buy one!

DIESEL DIESEL
D I E S E L !!!!!!!

HELLO ??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...YES, I WANT a DIESEL. Many people WANT a Diesel.

Hey jeep model again...Truck looking as jeep...
Great, but I am also thinking that diesel model should be manufactured...And really people are waiting for the diesel model...hope it will come soon.

I hope Jeep builds this with a diesel engine and a manual transmission, then I'll buy one. By now, having a diesel option is a must have for any of the Big Three North American pickup manufacturers. Therefore, I am hopeful. However, I won't buy it with a slush box automatic - irrespective of how it can be manipulated by the driver. Its either a manual transmission, or I won't buy it. I really like the 2010/2011 Ford Super Duty - but one can't get one with a manual. I told Ford Customer Service to let me know when they put in a manual transmission, then I'll look at their trucks again. I just came back from Frankfurt, Germany. My rental at the airport there was a Ford Kuga SUV with a diesel motor and a manual transmission. If they can do it for Europe, why not in North America.

Hey Chrysler- CAN YOU HEAR ME? Build this and your other smaller pickups and offer them with a dang diesel would 'ya????

Do you not understand that Americans like trucks but not all of us need Rams and F250's with 7 liter monster engines to pull 30ft trailers?

I love my 2002 Dakota Quad cab, but it gets 14mpg. And it's getting old enough for me to consider a replacement. Build me a Diesel or I'm going to get a VW Sport Wagon!

We are not all ignorant of the value of diesels, we just don't need full size trucks.

I so hope that Jeep puts a diesel in their truck. I currently have a Dodge diesel which I absolutely love. But I also miss my wrangler that I had to sell... A Jeep truck with a diesel motor would be a nice replacement for both.

Or a Mahindra pickup, whichever comes first.

Too late for me. My fun vehicle is an '85 Scrambler and after being teased by Jeep for years with bringing out a pickup I gave up. I did the math & nixed the idea of a Brute and reluctantly bought a Tacoma to replace my aging Dakota.

Crazy! I was just looking into a Cherokee/Comanche 4 door project I want to build and I find this!! Awesome!

Yes. 2 thumbs way up. Make this happen, and I'm a returning jeep customer since my 06 wrangler (sold). My wants: the diesel (or maybe the pentaster), live axle, removable rear seats (or none at all--for my dog/camping gear), live axle, removable bed shell option, manual trannie, decent roof rack system (or mounts), tow hitch (w/towing capacity 5,000 lbs), "good" clearance from the factory, factory bed liner (bed storage?), washable flooring, big rear window (that opens sideways or down), 400m range gas tank, 110v power converter, radio w/mp3 plug (and decent sound), alloys & keep the funky side wheel mount...I'll take mine in an arctic white with black trim (and black rims).

I can live with mpg in the low-mid 20's. What I'd add (aftermarket): roof rack system (bikes, boards & boats), accessory lighting, my roof-top tent, small front winch, body protection bits, and a lot more....Thanks Jeep for (finally) listening.

Well, I've been waiting for quite some time to see a pickup come along from Jeep. I had been waiting to see what happens with the proposed Mihanda truck, but the polititcal situation with them looks pretty bad. This new truck looks like it might fit the bill for me and I really would like to buy an American vehicle. Hopefully, it will have a diesel engine option. The 5'8" bed and extended cab look great. If they build it, I will come and buy one.

Please make it!!!!!!!!!! It is the only concept worth putting into production that will sell! The hurricane and the renegade seem more like dune buggys then anything and the trailhawk is similar to past jeep designs and they should put the trailhawk out maybe in like 5 years when people get tired of the new cherokees, compasses, libertys..... Jeep loving people and all others will love the gladiator and not only use it for their jobs or their main car but also for hunting, hauling, sport, or just for a cool looking car! Pleeeeeaaassse make it!

One word...."Diesel", otherwise they have a winner there!

"A version of a Jeep pickup shown to Chrysler dealers during a recent dealers meeting in Orlando, Fla., has been greenlit for production, according to PickupTrucks.com sources."

Well isn't this a crock of crap, i was just at my local friendly Jeep dealership asking about a Jeep pickup truck last week.

I actually went to all 5 Jeep dealerships around here, they knew nothing about an up coming Jeep truck nor did they believe one would ever be produced due to a "conflict of interest" was the reoccurring statement.

Now with me living in a major Metropolitan City with 5 Jeep dealers 3 of which are big name power players i would have thought one of them would know about said vehicle.

Mike

This is fantastic news! Now if they will just announce it with a reasonable price tag I will buy it immediately.
I am looking for a smaller truck than the F150 next year when my car comes off lease and this is exactly what I would like. I was hoping the people at Jeep would deliver the Gladiator. Now it may be happening. Great decision Jeep!!

Please put it out there!!! I own the Rubicon now, and will definitely add this to my Jeep inventory if they build it. That will allow me to have a truck and Jeep at the same time. Sweet!!!

Chrysler...BUILD IT!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD......BUILD IT!!!
give it a Diesel, and make the liberty 4.0 an option!
keep the side-mount spare and manual tranny.
and please please please....make a base model (gas motor..6 speed) priced in the teens so your average work-a-day person like myself can afford one!

hopeful for a diesel here ... but dealers shot it down with Cherokee ... they do not want to make investment to do service ... my grand cherokee will be 12 years old next year with over 220,000 miles I would buy one to replace ... not sure why there needs to be a $5k upcharge for a diesel ... can anyone enlighten me ... will be saving my $$$ to be the first on my block with this one

DIESEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you Chrysler folks are watching I will buy one if it comes with a Diesel....You led the way a few years ago, its time to step up and do it again!

My first true love was a 1966 Jeep Gladiator that I my dad owned, then gave to me. No ther truck compared to it when it came to dependabilty, off road ability and I hope and pray Jeep will bring one back. For nearly two years, since I first heard the tease, I drive by Jeep dealerships just praying to myself to see one setting on the lots.
