The New Chinese Status Symbol? Ford's SVT Raptor

2012 Raptor In the Desert II

In a country with a gigantic population, extreme arcitechural designs, and one of the most popular markets for Ferrari, Rolls Royce, and Lamborghini in the world, it's difficult to stand out in a crowd.

According to The Detroit News, there is a growing number of wealthy Chinese buyers that see the big and wide, powerful and strong SVT Raptor as the easiest way to stand out from the very large crowds of other wealthy people driving more traditional exotic cars. Although not illegal to import models from other countries, there are many bureaucratic hoops to jump through and layer and layers of red tape to pay for. In fact, according to some auto experts in China, new Raptors are being bought for about four times what they cost here in the States, meaning $145,000. Even a used one was sold for $109,000.

We have no doubt the Ford SVT Raptor will stand out in a crowd, and we're sure that when you get into the more rural towns outside the big cities the huge rough-road capabilities will be a huge asset, but with narrower roads and tight city streets, the Raptor may not be the best choice for a daily driving. Then again, maybe that's not the point. Still, we don't care what country you live in, if you own a Raptor, you deserve all the attention your neighbors want give you. There's no denying the truck is cool.

HUMMER H3T II

For a long time, Hummers were the ultimate symbol of wealth and status in China, as the H1s were the most popular, but the later H2, H2 SUTs, and H3T pickups created a small fortune for importers to high-end gray-market outlets.

There's no word in either of these articles whether any of the local Chinese car companies are interested in partnering with Ford to produce a version of the Raptor in a life-size or 3/4-scale but it wouldn't surprise us if some photos of a proto-type Raptor-ette showed up in the near future. What's next? How about a Power Wagon Limo?

Ford will be kicking Chevrolet's ass over in China soon enough. Just another win for Ford. And yet another loss for Chevy by GM's hand. A damn shame. Chevrolet's entire truck program needed to be dismantled and rebuilt by real truck people from the ground up again after the bankruptcy. It didn't happen. I fully support Chevrolet Motor Co. breaking off from GM so they can become competitive again instead of being held back.

Anyone would would pay $145,000 for a CRAPTOR is dumber than that guy Frank.

@MarkLJ (Ford will be kicking Chevrolet's ass over in China) Dream on Fordtardo! GM WILL ALWAY BE BETTER THEN FORD MOTOR JUNK COMPANY!

Ford, which hasn’t paid U.S. taxes since 2005, may not pay federal taxes until the end of the decade because it still would have tax-loss benefits on its books from $31.4 billion in operating losses sustained from 2005 to 2009, said Brian Johnson, a Chicago-based analyst with Barclays Capital Management. http://www.techimo.com/forum/debateimo-politics-religion-controversy/257234-ford-may-not-pay-taxes-until-end-decade.html

Ford borrowed 6 billion dollars from the Federal Government back in 2009 to rebuild/retool their factories and develop more fuel efficient vehicles. As of September 2012 they have not paid back a penny of that 6 billion. Ford also willing participated in the Cash For Clunkers program. This just proves that Ford loves government money just as much as their competitors.

Wrong. GM doesn't have to pay federal taxes until it uses up its $50B in losses it was allowed to carry forward after bankruptcy - something not usually allowed but the government re wrote the bankruptcy laws specifically for GM! Try again bro.

Everyone loves money, but not bailout money. The Detroit news said GM would be in a better position if they had followed Romney's plan which was a managed bankruptcy to get rid of unecessary expenses and outrageous union contracts. Now with the bailout the can was just kicked own the road. GM is worse off today than they were 4 years ago and people have less jobs.

Yes Ford took money to retool factories and to build more fuel efficient cars and trucks but so did every other auto manufacture including the asian brands that build them here as well. God if you are going to nit pick at least tell the whole story. That money was never to be repaid back UNLIKE all the money we are still waiting for GM to pay back. At this point all signs are pointing to another GM bankruptcy and more likely a possible liquidation in the near future. I would not buy anything GM for the next 5 years just to see if they can dig themselves out of the hole they dug

@Bob,

Is that all you got, thanks for the input Troll!

You wish a GM truck can be sold for that much.

"Even a used one was sold for $109,000."

Go Ford.

This confirms the theory that Ford F-150 has the highest resale and the Germans love David Hasslehoff!

Ah, good to something made here in the states sell good there. Overpriced, but hey, the seller is laughing all the way to the bank.

The Raptor is amazing!! I have a 2011 right now and looking at a 2013 . "Craptor" cracks me up, I love when people hate with out even knowing. You obviously are a very intellegent to add "C" to make a great word! Right now two other truck manufacturers are now trying to come out with a truck off the production line to compete with the Raptor and none have come close yet so FORD did something right! I'm sorry GM couldn't be shipped over seas and sold for 3x as much (I'd be salty too). Thats because IT ISN"T UNIQUE!! The Raptor has a good look stock and there are plenty of modifications for those who want more from the beast (looks and performance). Personally taking my truck offroad and letting it open up is some of the most fun I've had with it. Snow, mud, sand, water what ever it is its the Raptor's playground .

It erked me that the cash for clunkers were not all clunkers, and many a family in need could have used them, or they could have atleast let the vehicles be sold to salvage yards at a slightly higher rate then the scrap metal rate. Lots of good parts went down the drain.

You wish a GM truck can be sold for that much.

-GM/Chevy offers so much money off the sticker right now just to unload those GMT900 junkers it's comical. Those trucks and even the 800's before it are complete piles of cheap plastic, cheap metal, cheaply built disposable trash. Nobody would pay Ford money for a modern Chevy. The old trucks are a different story. The new ones are the laughing stock of the trucking community. I contend that they could discount the Silverado 20 grand and it still wouldn't sell in the numbers the F-150 does. Modern Chevrolet's are cheaply built ugly piles of junk compared to Ford's and even now Dodge's. GM has destroyed Chevrolet trucks and even their cars for the most part. Once upon a time Chevy's were the best money could buy. Not anymore.

MarkLJ... let me edit your response just a little bit, For wont be kicking anyones tail over in china but rather whichever Chinese company shamelessly hijacks the raptor patents and copies it for 1/10th the price is going to be kicking Chevy, Ford and Doge's tail over in China while laughing in the WTO's face about it. Just ask any other major US mfg who has had a product become popular over there.

Good attempt at trying to fanboy this one though.... all you have proven is exactly what everyone knows already that boys who want to pretend to be men buy Raptors to look cool, that's about it

Ford loves government money should change their name to Frank Loves Government Money. Anyone that nuts and dilusional has to draw a government check. LMAO

all you have proven is exactly what everyone knows already that boys who want to pretend to be men buy Raptors to look cool, that's about it

@da, and ford rakes in the money off of it. smart business if you ask me. their shareholders also thank them for it. chevrolet trucks arent what they once were and thats why they dont get the love they once did. putting a know nothing girl in charge of chevy's truck program was a huge mistake. one gm will pay for no doubt. you're also discounting the raptor's true capabilities. there's not one truck chevrolet ever built that could run with this thing. ford owns the truck world and for good reason. they're better looking, better built and better designed. chevy turned in it's truck card back in 1988 when they yanked the sfa out. they resigned from trucks period 10 years later after the 400 was done. they did this to themselves.

"you're also discounting the raptor's true capabilities. there's not one truck chevrolet ever built that could run with this thing."

I never once discounted the Raptors capabilities, everything I stated was directly pointed at Raptor drivers. I also dont disagree that Ford marketing is laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of boys that need to feel a little bigger. You say not 1 of Chevy's trucks can hang with the Raptor... thats true and I return your comment with this, not more than maybe 1% (and I feel Im being being very generous) of Raptor owners use their Raptor for anything other than hauling their massive "ego" around.

They should make the Chinese drive electric cars so we can keep the oil for ourselves and drive the big trucks, if all the Chinease start driving them we will be really messed up.

Wow! I didn't see this one turning int a game of Political one-upsmanship and my weiner is bigger than yours. *sarcasm*

How is this different than what they are here? The percentage of people who buy this truck here and actually take it off road is low, it's just another status symbol for dads...

pickuptruck.com supports Ford big time

Don't buy a Ford junk Craptor, I did and I'm pissed that I did! I hit a baby jump in mine, and the front wheel bust slap off the truck, and folded the frame like a wet noodle! I had transmission problems to with in 15,000 miles. Take it from me buy a Ram, or a GM truck if you want something the will last offroad, Ford trucks sure don't last long or well!

This is a bit like buying Old British Sportscars. A fashion statement for the Chinese Wealthy. They already have European Luxury cars, this is differenr.

some stuff you not able to do whit the raptor compare to the h3t especially in rock terrain just do the test..

Ladies! Ladies ! keep ya knickers on!!! If a American truck dose well in china it's good for America.
I hope Gm /Chevy pull their socks up. It's nice to see Ram making a come back. Long live the America truck !!

HAHA!! Why would china people want these Craptors, they are always breaking read the forms! http://www.raptorforumz.com/showthread.php?t=9858

Save you're self some money, and time don't buy a Raptor

@johnny troll,

Whatever makes you happy.

Have many miles on your 2011 Chevy (that you didn't know had AFM) oh wait, you're a f'ken TROLL.
Your buddy Bob is calling, time for your troll meal.

If the Raptor becomes popular in China the Chinese will copy it. Not to hard to take one apart and copy it. GWC will come out with one just like their version of the F-150 and Colorado. If Ford could just export it legally without the huge tariffs from China this might be profitable but they will have to work out a manufacturing arrangement which will lead to copies being made and sold. The Chinese will copy anything and sell it as their own.

So much for the chicken tax, tit for tat.

We buy these trucks to have fun and go mudding and off-roading, they buy these to show they have money lol.........

Frank The Troll don't hate on me cause the Ford Raptor is a joke of a truck. Hate Ford their the one's building this junk.

You say its about ego and how its how a boy want to look like a man or what ever. I don't know what MAN doesn't want to have a nice truck (stock or modified) or even car for that matter. Thats what this article was talking about, having a unique vehicle that is good looking. If striving to have the best isn't what you're doing in life then I don't know what it is you are doing? Strive for second ? or third? No thanks!! You with "no ego" can take that and run with it. Having nice things and having fun with them doesn't mean you have an ego.

You bent your frame being a dumb ass. I have taken mine off road plenty of times and have gotten it off the ground enough. I personally won't launch a jump til I get bump stops and frame support but you probably would know that if you would read a forum or done any research.

I'll take a cummins powered dodge RAM over this !

RAM!!!

I fully support Chevrolet Motor Co. breaking off from GM so they can become competitive again instead of being held back.

@Mark, completely agree here. Chevrolet's once upon a time kicked so much ass it wasn't even funny. Not anymore though. I have no love for Government Motors. Chevrolet on the other hand, I still have a soft spot for.

@johnny troll,

How can you justify it as a "JUNK TRUCK" when you never have driven one. I know many non-biased truck owner that have driven and loved it, and bought it.

You are just another f'ken TROLL. GO THE HELL AWAY!

@ PWJS I only got 3 feet of air. Well with in what Ford say's it could handle, and it didn't handle it it broke! Craptors are jokes don't buy one! Read the forms the bumper tirm falls right off. The cheap interor plastic rattles like crazy. Wireing is low on the frame so any stick/rock can snag it. The rear axles bust doing power slides in sand! Cheap plastic covers on the shocks bust, and the blow out! Fords the cheapest piles of junk on the road!

: I know of nobody who likes GM. And I literally mean Nobody. I agree, Chevrolet's (especially the 20's-mid 80's) were awesome. GM itself though sucks.

NOW IF THEY CAN JUST GET THOSE FORDS TO STOP CATCHING ON FIRE AND KILLING THEIR SLEEPING OWNERS!!!

@Johnny troll / RAPTORS ARE JUNK,

Stop trolling and grow up, YOU HAVE NOT TEST DRIVEN A RAPTOR.

I can see it now - I'm at the bar. I'm talking to some pretty girl. I say "I drive a Raptor F150, which is said to be the most coveted vehicle in all of mainland China."

She says "What?"

I say "I'm big in China - that's what I'm saying."

She says "I have to go..."

Oh well.

Yes, but would it not be most wonderful if a enterprising China company could make Ford Raptor for export to United States for cost to American for cost less than say $20,000? Think of the joyus faces of those being able to drive Raptor but for now can not afford. For those wanting quality Raptor made in China for less cost be sure to write your congressperson to easing of trade sanction with China.
