The last of our work-dressed, heavy-duty pickup trucks in our upcoming 2017 3/4-Ton Work Truck Challenge was the beefy 2017 Ram 2500 Tradesman. Although one of the older players in this contest, the Ram had quite a few things going for it, not the least of which was the torquey 6.4-liter Hemi. It was one of two pickups with a trailer brake controller, and it had a good amount of storage behind the front seats. As the retro truck of our challenge, the Ram was the only one with crank windows, manual mirror adjustments and without a keyless entry.

Find out more about what we had to say about the capabilities of the Ram 2500 Hemi next week.

That's the second good looking truck in this work truck comparo. Ford should take note of the great styling on the Silverado and RAM.

I just can't get past the coil springs on a work pickup. Leaf springs all the way

Holy cow, even ram has a better interior than chevy. So far chevy is the only truck that has a one color interior that looks like spray paint.

Chevy should take note, the top of the tire should not sit below the bottom of the frame. How can everyone get that right except chevy?

A little bland on styling and starting to show its age, but not that ugly bland that that Chevy is.

Two out of the last 3 trucks I owned had power windows.

Going back to cranking the windows is ok in a pickup thas a bench front, but if there's a console dividing the front passengers, power window is a must.

The Ram is a very appealing 3/4 ton truck, esp the red paint!

Maybe no one else got it right. Did you ever think of that?

Ummmmm yea, no. Chevy did not get that right at all. In fact is looks completely stupid.

Looks like a 2004 F-150/F-250 which isn't bad but needs some modernizing.

Not only power windows but having to put the key in to lock and the doors gets old really fast.

Still a fan of the Ram truck line.

@gms, what about the twin GMC Sierra, is that one not good enough for you, so you have just finally admitted that there is no GM truck and you are a Chevy guy? So now you just admitted that you are happy with number 2 behind Ford? Awesome thanks for the clarification! I guess 40 years at number 2 aint so bad

RAM SELLS MORE HD TRUCKS THAN GM.

GUTS
GLORY
RAM

@HEMI

The 2500 RAM has classic looks and an awesome v8. In point of fact however, GM sells way more pickups. They outsell RAM by about 2x1

Coil spring rear out handle leaf spring rear ends. When you get a chance look at one. You will see how well the axle is supported from up down twist and side to side. Even has a shock mounted to the rear diff.

Ram again industry leading tech.

Rear coil springs is progress whether we like it or not. It outhandles leafs and if it carries the load well then change is a must. Durability is compromised for improved handling and comfort. Disposable trucks anyways only built for a couple years lease or 100k miles.

Ford should take note of the great styling on the Silverado and RAM.

They tried. Look at the front of the f150, complete copy of Ram and Toyota. Except they got it wrong it's uglier than sin. Now the 250 is the ugliest truck on market. With the weakest bed.!

Chevy is 3rd in HD sales.

Ram 2nd.

Ford 1st.

I believe the finishing order for the Work Truck Challenge will go in the order of sales. Ram will be 2nd and I am ok with that. Chevy will be 3rd. Nissan 4th. Ford will be 1st. Hats off to Ford eventhough I am not a big fan and prefer Ram. Ford trucks are hard to beat.

Leafs constantly fight the axle wrap, friction and side loads, something RAM took care of with multilink long time ago.

Man, I really feel sorry for the poor suckers that buy ram 3500's then. Hahahahaha

Reg cab pw please. I see no reason why you can't just give me some pw options on this truck. Its superior in that form by far. Please pw this truck!

@Hemi,
From 2014:
Yes, the Ford F-250 did come out on top during our 16-event empirical portion, but fell a healthy distance short of the competition (we can't help but wonder what would have happened with 4.30:1 gears) in ride quality and overall interior design and quality.

------

So the others came out on top in interior decorating, and Ford was the winner in the actual testing. Sounds about right.

With the new interior from the F-150 Ford cannot lose this time.

Ram 2500 what great looking truck and tough too. No wonder Ram way,way outsells the GM looks like a brick with paint weaklings.

Chevy should take note, the top of the tire should not sit below the bottom of the frame. How can everyone get that right except chevy?

I think all you all need to go back and look at the pictures again. The top of the tire doesn't sit below the frame on the Chevy. It sits about the middle of the frame. What are you talking about here? Maybe 1"-2" difference? Ever think the tire size may be different on the 3 trucks?

It's sad the same group of you guys bitch about who sells more and the same old things every single article that's put up here. I swear most of you all must be 25 or younger the way you bitch at each other.

I like the look of exterior and interior of this and the Chev. Bold design and simple interiors.

Although this has more buttons on the steering wheel than I'd prefer but not a big deal.

@Dave Z., " we found the most problems surrounding the truck were underneath in the form of the suspension's challenged ride quality, both when loaded or empty. None of the other trucks sagged as much as the F-250, which showed a pronounced droop in the rear end when loaded. Likewise, when loaded, the ride was floaty and wobbly — especially when taking corners."

SAGGING AND LAGGING, Sounds about right. lol

This truck engine has a cast iron Hemi block built for the long haul. Durability. Gas engine has EGR like a Diesel. Pistons are shot from under with oil. This truck is built for heavy duty cycles.

That's the second good looking truck in this work truck comparo. Shaky cheby should take note of the great styling on the Ford and then RAM.

One need only look in the engine bay of any late model Ram-
gas or diesel, to see what neatness is all about. How is it that Ram can make it all look so neat while the Duramax and the Powerstroke both look like 500 lbs of cooked spaghetti was unceremoniously dumped under the hood?

It's indicative of how the rest of the truck was/is built. The
only one close to a Ram is the Titan with gas or diesel.
As for the rest of the Ram, they take a back seat to no one.
And add a set of Hellwig auxiliary air bags out back with
manual inflation and you have the best of both worlds.....coil
springs w/air bag help and that 5 link setup. It can't be
matched...
