April 2017 Pickup Sales Breakdown

01_group_01_esjpg_32034828451_oD

Although overall pickup truck sales did pretty well in the first quarter of 2017, it looks like a sluggish economy and slowing demand has finally caught up with the class. Except for Ram, most pickups were down in April when compared with April 2016 sales numbers. Of course, the Nissan Titan, Titan XD and Honda Ridgeline had monster sales increases because both manufacturers completely remodeled those pickups last year, so they're still reaping enormous gains.

The mid-size segment is about as stable as it gets, with the best-selling Toyota Tacoma outselling the second-place Chevrolet Colorado by a 2-to-1 ratio. Of course, Chevy dealerships soon will be getting the all-new off-road-focused Colorado ZR2 to better compete with Toyota's TRD lineup. We'll see if it will be enough to make a bigger dent in Toyota's lead in the mid-size segment.

Full-size pickups had an interesting month. Ram outsold the Chevrolet Silverado for the second straight month and it looks like it will continue that streak with the only all-positive numbers for 2017 besides the Titans. However, when looking at total sales for the year, Ram must ramp up its game to dethrone the Silverado from its perennial second-place spot by the end of the year.

Just as interesting is the manufacturers' race: Ford is still doing an amazing job with its two-truck lineup (the F-150 and Super Duty) when compared with GM's six-truck lineup (Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado 1500 and heavy duties, and the GMC Canyon and Sierra 1500 and HDs). If something doesn't change soon, the Ford Ranger, due out in the next 18 months, will certainly help push Ford even further ahead.

I love the colour of that Raptor. I like that granite colour on the Power Wagon too.

I'm amazed by the fact that Ram is out selling Chevrolet. The oldest truck outselling one of the newest.

"it looks like a sluggish economy and slowing demand has finally caught up with the class"

The USA economy has been stagnant for quite some time. I've read that consumer confidence is down significantly.

Sockpuppetpotus hasn't accomplished much and policies swing wildly depending on who has their hand up his azz. That hasn't been good for consumer confidence.

Worry about Canada, or maybe try educating yourself and instead of listening to the alt left hate and destroy T. media.

Consumer confidence is at a 16 year high.

Funny thing is I never saw any of these so called "independents" and moderates on PUTC go after O the same way they go after T.

Either the economy is bad, or the pickup market is full cause pickup sales are down-down-down since last year.
The Ford has always been the leader in pickup sales so the majority of the people can't be stupid buying the worst truck.
The Ford has to be the best cause it's always the #1 in sales.

I buy on the reputation of the local dealer, not the brand!
I would love to own a Ram Truck but my local Ram Dealer has the worst service reputation ripping everybody off.
Service after the sale and honoring my warranty is important to me I don't want to pay $1500 for a new seat frame when all it needs is a $8 switch cause the power seat don't work. When they change oil I expect them to change the oil filter instead of cleaning my old filter off and still charging me for it.
Walmart is more honest than the dealer, it's a generic filter but at least they change it!

stay away from Hawk Ford oaklawn,IL one of my techs brought his van in for service and a mechanic on their staff stole his tools the dealership refuses to do anything about it.

Great job GM! Still #1 2 years and 4 months running!

Remarkable that PUTC can't bring themselves to even whisper that GM is still ahead of the rest in truck 2017 sales.

The US economy is fine! Stocks at record highs, home building permits set new records every month. In case PUTC forgot, there is no demographic figure that's more sensitive to home builder sentiment than pickup owners. When home building is hot, pickup sales always reflect it.

The issue that's weighing on truck sales is interest rates. They're up.

The prospect of higher rates in 2017 remains. Detroit will need to get creative if they want to beat 2016's numbers. Simply putting out a new trim package or some decals on trucks like the RAM and the Tundra won't get it.

Let's have some exciting rebates and zero rate financing. That will inspire sales.

The products are out there on the dealer lots. With the exception of RAM and Toyota, the outlook is exciting. Nissan needs to refresh the Frontier pronto!

Funny thing is I never saw any of these so called "independents" and moderates on PUTC go after O the same way they go after T.

Just remember, O brought the economy back from the brink. It will soon fail again under T. Start storing your canned soups.

Nice, now GM/johnny can see Ford is number 1 all over, chevy falling to 3 is a bad sign for them. Toyota beats both twins in the small segment. Looks like Ford will continue to win long term.

Just remember, O brought the economy back from the brink. It will soon fail again

@gmsrgreat

Obama has a horrible record on the economy. He had the incredible good luck of gas prices falling in the second term of his administration.

That was the only shot in the arm the whole economy had during his disastrous time as president. He inherited a crappy economy and left us with one that---despite trillions of dollars in government spending---was only incrementally better.

Nitro GM is still #1 over all, its okay to uncover your eyes when you look at them last two graphs HAHAHA!

Ford: Mr Pres T can we get a bail out!

Mr Pres T: No you still haven't paid back all them billions in Government loans to build all the cheap junk, that you now have to give away.

Ford: But you'll go broke!

Mr. Pres T: To bad, should of built that junk to start with!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

@johnny, my eyes are fine, sorry you have to find ways to defend the twins, fact is, they are going downhill fast, chevy is poised to continue to loose to ram, gmc is on there some where far back, the only 1 truck standard is the #1 truck Ford.

Nitro How am I defending? The charts clearly show GM is still the #1 truck maker.

I think your defending Ford, made up reasons why Ford has fall n to #2 for the last 2 years and 4 months.

I guess if you have to say I'm defending to make your #2 place Ford slide feel better, then go for it HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

"Fields has been pouring billions into self-driving cars and ride-sharing experiments as its traditional-car business has struggled far more than crosstown rival General Motors in a slowing U.S. market. Ford’s first quarter adjusted earnings fell 42 percent, while GM appears on pace for another record annual profit."

"The issues at the company were underscored when Ford’s U.S. market share fell to 15.1 percent in the first four months of the year from 15.6 percent during the same period last year, according to Autodata Corp. GM dominates the most lucrative product category of large SUVs, and Ford is trying to play catch-up by introducing redesigned versions of its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator in the fall."

"That didn’t sit well with John Chevedden, a regular presence at the old-fashioned meetings in Wilmington who says he owns 600 shares. He sent an email to reporters alleging that Ford wants to avoid confrontations and complaining about “a meeting that one can only access on a computer.” Other companies have also gone digital, but competitors like GM and Tesla Inc. still let shareholders gather in person to make their voices heard."

"Tesla passed Ford in market value last month, despite selling about 80,000 vehicles last year compared to Ford’s 6.7 million. Tesla then briefly surpassed GM, and the two have been jostling for the lead since."

Ford Trash Company is a big failure! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

@johnny, sorry you have to continue to respond and defend the twins with their old out dated interiors and shaky motors. For dis number 1 for 40 years, its ok, if I were you I would try my best to defend the twins as well, as they cant say that

Nitro What are you talking about? A 5 year old lower level LTZ trim matched a brand new 2017 King Ranch trim. Ford hasn't been #1 number one any where close to 40 years. GM has stomp Ford into the ground sales wise countless times, its all over the internet. That's okay tho, keeping make up rights to defend Ford butthurt loser! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Johnny, again, so sorry you have to continue to defend now Chevy in this case, and the fact that Ford has been number 1 selling for now 40 years.

If you think pickup sales are sluggish now wait till ole yeller at the fed caps off a couple years of interest rate hikes in by this time 2019.
That easy cheap auto loan money be up in smoke and buyers will have to actually pay up, unlike the sign and drive for the past 3yrs.
When ole yeller belly goes hog cracksmack mad with intention to pin a hard landing on GOP in 3-5yrs. Easier to read than your papis initials on his hanky rag these leftist fart sniffing climate girls are.

Ram overtaking Chevy is sign of the times, it's all going down hill for GM.

@johnny, my eyes are fine, sorry you have to find ways to defend the twins, fact is, they are going downhill fast, chevy is poised to continue to loose to ram, gmc is on there some where far back, the only 1 truck standard is the #1 truck Ford.

Don't waste your time anymore Bro, it's all in his IDICRACY. Let him gloat his waste and let's move on.

It's funny I know, however, we know the real story so let's move on from this and ignore them GM Yuppies.

To those who like to bash #1.... any brand can be number 1 for a year, maybe even 2. But to be number 1 year after year after year for 35 or more years means the buyers are happy and the product is superior. There's no other way around it. Build a better truck and the buyers will come. Build a better truck every time and the buyers keep coming back. It's not rocket science, it's just common sense.

Agreed!! The McDonalds reference of selling the most is the most idiotic comparison I've ever seen.

Agree with both on the #1 selling references, but it is so fun to watch the gm guys, or Ford wannabes scramble, I enjoy getting under their skin.

I may be adding to Ram's numbers. I'm in the market for a 3/4 ton gasser. A crew cab 4x4 Laramie with options comes in at about $46500, a comparably equipped GMC SLT is coming in at about $54,000. That's a significant difference.

@JC, much nicer truck too. I always liked the Rams, and would buy one.

HAHAHAHA!!!...the last paragraph say's it; eat that shaky GOVT motor fangilrs...

@Lionel,
Check this link out....it's really laughable.

You dum GM guys r just stupid. I hope u like yur shakey GM trucks cause they are just ripoffs. Every one knows that Ford came up with shakes 1st and they made shakey trucks better than dum GM ever did. Same ole GM stealing all Fords ideas!!!

"I had the same (death wobble) problem. I have added a dual stabilizer with Fox 2.5 stabilizers, adjustable trac bar, moog drag link and replaced ball joints. It has been over 20k miles and it's been awesome. Fords front end is now cheap steel with junk front end parts.

It's a common problem for sure and Ford knows it. "

@ Rusty,

The difference between Ford's issue and the Chevy shake is below.

Ford resolved the issue, as stated above.

Chevy engineers have no clue why the Chevy Shakes at highway speed.

Do you get it? Hello McFlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

GO FORD YOU ARE NUMBER ONE SECOND TO NONE!!!!!

"Ford resolved the issue"
Frank | May 11, 2017 4:56:15 PM

No Frank Ford never resolved the issue! Owners did!

The ONLY thing the 'big O' did for the economy was to create more fighting and world strife and give blacks reason to purchase MORE guns. NOT much of a record in my books. The 99% of us were left with more govt. debt and NO health insurance.

Ram is offering 25% off all trucks in canada. No wonder they are out selling chevy, they are giving the dam things away.

They're offering 36 month leases for $299/month, practically no money due at signing. They've been pushing financing out to 96 months to get all the sub-prime buyers they can too.

Not that Ford or GM are any better. They're throwing $8k on the hood from time to time to keep up with Ram's deals. It's not surprising though, everybody that can afford a new truck has bought one in the last couple years. Now the dealers are trying to get customers to trade their 2 year old trucks in for new ones. They want my 2015 Cummins on trade like you wouldn't believe.

HD RamKing - the only big factory rebates I see right now on Ford pickups are left over 2016 5.0's. I can get 11k off on fleet spec reg cab 5.0's right up to full bling Platinum.

"GM sells more trucks. Any questions?"

Current math says No!

"Just as interesting is the manufacturers' race: Ford is still doing an amazing job with its two-truck lineup (the F-150 and Super Duty) when compared with GM's six-truck lineup (Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado 1500 and heavy duties, and the GMC Canyon and Sierra 1500 and HDs). April 2017

Ford 70,657
GM 69,143
..................
Ford = 1,514

@Lou

Please list the last full year when GM sold fewer trucks than Ford.

Last two years Ford had changeovers that lost 100k in inventory.

Name the last year when GM failed to mention the Silverado in the year end sales press release.

That was 2016.

In 2017, Silverado sales are down 6%, despite huge incentives.

Ford is selling more trucks with its two-truck lineup (the F-150 and Super Duty) when compared with GM's six-truck lineup (Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado 1500 and heavy duties, and the GMC Canyon and Sierra 1500 and HDs).

Class dismissed.

@papajim,

Can't you see Ford is outselling all of GM's trucks combined.

This is a big deal.

@Lou

this week Ford announces a layoff of one tenth of its global workforce. This says it all. I've been saying for at least five years that Ford's senior management was too invested in tech & research, and not enough invested in nuts & bolts.

Proof? The F150

The F150 is technically more advanced than any other pickup in the market. So much so, that its sales performance should be off the chart.

Instead, Ford was busy building the truck that would satisfy the Greens and the guys in the Obama White House that wanted Ford to be first to meet the 2025 CAFE standards.

Unfortunately for Ford's shareholders, Main Street American truck buyers had other ideas. The last two years GM sold more trucks than Ford.

Ford's status in the number two slot tells the whole story. Now that Ford is cutting 10 percent of its workforce, it sounds like the smart guys in Dearborn finally wised up. Could be too late.

Silverado = Perennial second place. That is too funny.
