Half-Ton Pickup Trucks Are Selling Like Crazy: Who Is Winning?

IMG_7234 II

It's no secret that half-ton pickup trucks are among the best-selling vehicles every year. Unfortunately, big pickup truck makers such as Ford, GM (Chevrolet and GMC) and Ram do not break out their half-ton sales from their monthly full-size truck sales reports. That means we never know what the sales ratio is between half tons, three-quarter tons and one tons. That is, unless we go to our Cars.com analytics team, which can do a pretty good job of getting close. We should note that because Toyota has only one full-size pickup, the half-ton Tundra, it's quite easy to get separate monthly sales numbers for Toyota's two pickups, but since Nissan has two full-size pickups — the Titan and Titan XD — getting their exact monthly numbers is also more challenging.

Below we offer the market-share breakdown based on Cars.com data of half-ton pickups for 2016 and 2017 to give you an idea of how the half-ton market is shifting and changing. During that time period, the top-selling F-150 sold around 600,000 units, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 flirted with 450,000 units and the Ram 1500 sold closer to 350,000. Those numbers are impressive and important because these are the vehicles that make the biggest profits.

We imagine these numbers will shift yet again for 2018, but not because the truckmakers aren't trying their hardest to sell as many vehicles as possible. As sales heat up for 2018, we'll see all the truckmakers offer better deals and more diverse, customer-focused products.

You and your sister sibling came from the same mother, does this mean you're girl as well?

@Frank

It sure does, Frank. GM has more market share than Ford. Great observation

Ford lost 1.8% market share on the F150 and GM lost .1% from 2016 to 2017. Meanwhile, as reported earlier, Ford has been increasing F-series market share for that same time period. It looks like the real winner is the Super Duty as it has increased the most boosting the F-series numbers over the other brands.

GM has always had more market share but couldn't compete on a brand basis. They just double up on everything and water it down.

Now just think if GM would have more GMC/Buick stores out there. Maybe they would sell more GMC's??? Just a thought. Here in the Midwest, there are 3 times more Chevy dealerships than GMC/Buick dealerships.

Hopefully the new Sierra will be different than upcoming Silverado. GM has said its supposed to be?? We will see...GMC has always been more expensive as well. Hopefully they will make the SLE models more affordable. Because they generally run $4k higher than LS models and anywhere from $5k to $8k cheaper than an XLT around here.

It looks like the real winner is the Super Duty as it has increased the most boosting the F-series numbers over the other brands.

A lot of guys with the flimsy 1st gen Superduty dumped them off for one with a fully boxed frame. Probably tired of the dented tailgates and cracked radiators.

Wow the super duty must really be killing it. Ford dropped their market share on half tons but increased market share overall. It has been well-known for a while that the super-duty dominates the 3/4 and 1 ton category but it's surprising that it is continuing to grow its marketshare there.

The weird thing to me is that GM and Ram have always seemed to offer a more competitive product in the 3/4 and 1 ton category. I mean the duramax-allison is pretty legendary and cummins to many people is in a league all it's own. Super duty has been hit or miss on powertrains, although the scorpion diesel seems to be a hit.

Ford has definitely had more competitive products in the 1/2 ton category with the ecoboosts and 5.0 both having a very good reputation. So it's weird to me that the super duty is doing relatively better than the f-150

It would be nice to see the HD truck sales breakdown!

This is not complex.

Ford and GM flat-out OWN damn near 75% of the full size truck market. That means that every other full size maker is busting his butt to compete for the remaining quarter of the market, or as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi might say, the crumbs.

This perhaps explains why the mid size market is getting hotter. Everybody is looking for an angle.

Is there a NYSE symbol for Chevrolet? Or Lincoln?

If you own Ford or GM stock, the dividends you get are from only one Company, and everything they make, Period.

Odd logic to say GM should omit some sales because they have different names and grill's so therefore are not the same brand.
Investors would have some choice words for anyone suggesting such nonsense.

So there is a few more GM 1/2 tons than Ford 1/2 tons. Surprised the cheaper Ram doesn't have more market share. There is no way the Ram will pass either of the 2. The new Silverado and Sierra are going to make it too hard for Fiat to even come close.

@SuperDuty

Don't be so sure! The new RAM mild hybrid has the potential to be a real game changer if Fiat doesn't screw the pooch with quality issues or limited availability.

I don't understand why all the Ford haters are upset at GM for using/making 2 trucks brands?? Give the consumers more choices. Plus...didn't Ford try this and FAIL with the Lincoln truck?? THAT'S RIGHT THEY DID!!!!

True GMC/CHEVY are essentially same truck but exterior wise, for the most part they look different. And GMC does us more silencing materials in their automobiles. They are quieter. Buddy has 17 LTZ and he says my Sierra is quieter, and when we bought our Terrain they said they use more materials in it then Equinox and it is a lot quieter than my grandfathers equinox.

The Ford guys brag about how Ford offers most choices of engines in their trucks for a wide variety of people.

GM is just doing it with an actual truck!!

Overall...Man, GM and Ford like papajim said takes up almost 75% of the consumers!!! Holy cow...that's a chunk of people and trucks

GM always whoops el junko Ford! Good job Ram and GM.

Can you show us the 3/4 - 1 TON of "WHO IS WINNING."

Then, the sheep will quiet down.

As usual FORD NUMBER SECOND TO NONE let all the dogs out. POOR GARBAGE MOTORS KEEP MAKING JUNK OVER JUNK. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Look like Frank is the same person posting as chignon, what a loser LMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Frank

GM leads Ford....relax! GM offers 2 trucks bc they can sell 2 trucks...Ford couldn't...they tried...failed horribly

Move on!!

Throw in HD and FORD Leads GM.

It's the same story over and over with ya'll.

F150>Silverado>Sierra

F250>SilveradoHD>SierraHD

PERIOD!!!

Where does it show GM in the pie chart?

You're ignorance is amusing.

If I was a GM humper, I wouldn't gloat about adding two truck brands to outsell one, that shows how pathetic and ignorant a person really is, but hey, that's why we have the midwest, where they can all stay there.

@ Frank

Do u even listen to yourself sometimes. Think before you speak. The our chart shows Chevy and gmc, yes...but they are General Motors. They just offer 2 moderately different trucks.

Chill out and have a civil conversation. You are ridiculous man...insults are all you have....and my advice to is not to insult a Midwesterner. Wouldn't be a smart move by you old man!!!! That's a fact!

Ford tried selling 2 truck brands but Failed under Ford Motor Company......but you fanboys tend to forget that......but if they didn't and it said Lincoln and for some unwordly reason they were on pie chart....you would make sure to let everyone know though there wouldn't you Frankie boy!!!

Ford builds a Base Truck up to a Beautiful Limited Edition truck that will blow away the Silverado/Sierra with one truck trim.

Ford don't need to build a special truck for bling a la GMC, they build the best with the F-Series. They don't need to different brand to bamboozle buyers, and we all know how well GMC trucks sell, HORRID.

You Failed!

I got $100 here saying you had to google the word BAMBOOZLE.

:D

@ Frank

My Sierra that I bought fully loaded for $42k has everything your limited or platinum truck has and I saved $20k? Plus it has the most reliable small block V8 that sells today and they have sold more than 100 million of them!!!

I'm done debating with you. 100 million motors. Think about that long and hard!!!

Who is getting bamboozled??? U can mail me your so called $100 too bc I know that little word!! I prefer a crisp $100, not 100 crusty $1 !!

I still cannot believe people are spending this kinda of money on a truck regardless of the make. Unreal

For the $42k you paid an XLT F-150 has better option and features. Damn you’re an........

Your responses tell us your intelligence...SAD!!

No one does ignorance and pathetic as well as Frank. Actually, I move to have a picture of Frank place beside each of those 2 words in the dictionary.

I still want my $100 too...or do u lie like Ford!!

General Motors Co. was the only Detroit automaker to post a net loss in 2017, down $3.9 billion!!!

@TNTGMC..., Do you mean the Lincoln Blackwood?

That was also a HUGE failure by Ford. An oversized explorer sport Trac wad the Lincoln Blackwood and in 2002 and 2003 they wanted $50K for these things!!!!

Here is a pic

Hmmm, GM sold a lower percentage in 2017 as compared to 2016. No surprise there.

Although this is good, I really want to see all model breakdowns. I am really impressed that Ford continues to lead the market.

FORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Dale

Ford sold a lower percentage as well!

Maybe people were cross shopping to midsize trucks

Gimmick.

When a truck maker puts a true locomotive style drivetrain in a truck, you will have an amazing hybrid.

Not some piece of sh*t that allows you to do a better 15 second burnout before the battery is tapped.

But the same guys that bought a ram because of the movie twister will be all over this....

@andrwken

sounds like you have a pretty strong opinion.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm predicting that RAM sells a ton of base model RAM 1500s with the 3.6 mild hybrid 8 speed

In six months we will know if I was wrong.

@ Stevedore

I agree with you also...its just very small minded individuals who don't understand this and then throw insults at you bc they have no clue what they're ranting about!

I want my $100 too!!

As for the new hybrid RAM has....im up in the air with it...great idea...just know there has to be some bugs worked out of it before it goes smoothly...hopefully they'll get it to last longer than the 30 secs?? Isn't that what I read!?

It really comes down to the fact that this product provides a limited range of functionality.

If they installed a battery that could provide real world benefits besides off the line torque, you would have a winner.

That size battery provides nothing more than marketing bragging rights. Add 100 ft lbs. of torque with a glorified alternator and now you can market the 5.7 hemi as the most powerful motor available in a half ton. Even though its sh*t on the highway with a real trailer behind it, constantly searching for gears.

Its misleading bullsh*t that will sell to people who don't understand how it works. I hate it when they pray on the uninformed. This is the kind of garbage marketing that Ford uses to get guys like Frank to lick their balls(military grade aluminum when there is no such designation). Or do you think this will really provide a substantial solution?

I am glad to see Ram has an all new truck, this is long overdue. I was concerned that FCA was not putting enough resources into Ram and Jeep and using them instead for Alfa Romeo. I still believe spending resources on Alfa Romeo was a mistake but with a new Ram and new Jeeps FCA is still viable. Even if Ram does not take the No 2 spot from Chevy its sales will grow along with its profits.

I am really surprised. Silverado sales are down for the year by a good bit. Yet, 1500 sales have stayed pretty level, actually gaining slightly over 16'. GM has been proud to point out that they have steadily been gaining market share in the HD commercial fleet sales for like 16 straight months. So one can conclude, based on facts, that Silverado HD consumer sales are dropping signifigantly. This despite having an impressive Duramax/Allison powertrain. Why? Is the rest of the truck flawed? Longevity? Colorado sales surely would hurt 1500 sales more unless the HD buyer is getting older and making the drop all the way down to midsize. Hmmm...

Oh, and for months GMSRGRETTA has been crying foul that Ford doesn't break down F-150 sales ( as none of them do ) because the Silverado sells more because they only make one Silverado apparently. Either way, it's nice to have data. I am actually surprised F-150 outsold the GM twins combined in 16' and was only 1.1% less in 17'. I would have never guessed it would even be close honestly. . . .
