Honda Picks Up a 2018 Baja 500 Class Win With Ridgeline

Honda Ridgeline Race Truck 1 II

By Brian Normile

Honda's factory racing team picked up a Class 7 win in this year's 50th Baja 500 with a modified Ridgeline. The Ridgeline was driven by two teams of drivers and navigators: team owner Jeff Proctor drove with navigator Evan Weller before handing the truck over driver Patrick Daily and navigator Bill Barooky.

The Ridgeline, one of five competitors in its class, crossed the finish line more than two hours ahead of its nearest competitor for Honda's second class win in the last three years. A Ridgeline also won the 540-mile race in 2016, and another finished in — a relatively disappointing — third place last year. The Team Honda Racing Ridgeline completed the course in slightly more than 14 1/2 hours. The first vehicle to cross the finish line, Rob Mac Cachren's Ford Trophy Truck, did the race in 11 hours and 21 minutes — but that's like comparing apples to cocaine.

The grueling off-road race is divided into five classes for trucks, cars and buggies, motorcycles, quads and utility task vehicles, with several subclasses for various levels of driver experience and vehicle specifications.

The Ridgeline competes in Class 7, which is for six-cylinder trucks and SUVs that retain a production appearance (but as you might expect, are quite modified with advanced suspension technology and safety gear). Naturally aspirated engines are limited to 4.5 liters of displacement, while turbo- and supercharged engines typically max out at 3.5 liters. Vehicle and engine manufacturer must also be the same, so no ultra-wild body or engine combinations here.

If you're interested, you can find the rest of the results over at the official Baja 500 site. If you need me, I'll be figuring out how I can compete in or at least watch next year's race.

Honda: better than a GM, Ford, Or RAM any day of the week!!

So a version of something Honda sells so heavily modified it isn't sold won something.

Who cares?

Its not like its an almost production Raptor which was nearly identical to what you can buy. That's something.

Clint

You're right !
it's a heavy modified version
plus the driving skill of the driver makes a big difference

Nice.

Nice.

Honda: better than a GM, Ford, Or RAM any day of the week!!

Yeah right--my niece's Powerwheels™ Mustang has a higher tow rating than your wonderful Honda.

What a stupid comment...just as stupid....Honda goes faster than the 5MPH of the Powerwheels.

I wonder how many parts in that "truck" are actually from a Ridgeline....

I wonder how well this would sell if Honda offered an off road version of the Ridgeline???

Clint
You're right !
Raptor is a heavy modified version.
The only way Ford junk can run in a race.

The only thing this truck and an actual Ridgeline have in common is the name. This is built specifically for this race so it means nothing

Honda was competing with what a Rav4 Honda CRV Subaru Forester of course it will win.

@Clint,

This is where the Raptor shines, and is something really special. No other brand can touch it.

No disrespect to the Raptor, it's a great truck and as close as you can get to buying a "Baja" truck. But it doesn't stand a chance against these real Baja trucks. It barely finished the Baja 1000 in the stock full class division, getting beat by a hummer and a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Rod Halls ZR2 won last year, all they did was put a 1.5 inch body lift and 33inch tires, rest of truck was stock, except roll bar seats and lights

Frank- "this is where the Raptor shines." Lol
I like the Raptor but It didn't even finish this race
Come on man, your all talk

It's been a long time since you had a story about the F-150 Eco-Boost.
The most exciting 2019 Ford Ranger with it's 2.3 Eco-Boost is only months away and you're very quiet about that !

I can remember back in June 2014 how excited PUTC was about the new redesigned 2015 F-150 and almost had a story everyday.
Where's the excitement about the 2019 Ranger?
You know and I know the Ranger will be popular, everybody wants one.

@Dave

Must have been some pre-production trucks that didn’t want to run Imogene Pass in 2017. GM had a couple ZR2s with Michigan MFR plates that turned around at the base.

A few square bodies made it.
I doubt the engineering team ever learned that an 87 or 88 V-2500 crew cab long bed made it. Kind of embarrassing the ZR2 turned around. We were jokin about the cut front bumper, but low and behold, a raptor killer. Or maybe, annoyer.

Ridgelines are great for some folks and even more folks that would never try them, might be surprised.
BUT, they have no low range, default to FWD over 25 mph, lack positive traction devices, and even basics like decent off road tires, makes them an incredibly poor choice for even graded dirt adventures.

The plastic hub gears in the 4x4 F-150 Eco-Boost is just as strong as any metal gears and have proven to take long off-road abuse.

Think about the extreme power and the 475 ft lbs of torque the F-150 with the 3.5 Eco-Boost makes and stress on the 4x4 driveline system! It has to be STRONG !

The Ram and Silverado always have 4x4 driveline issues and problems but never-never-never any driveline problems with the F-150 Eco-Boost !

my plastic gears are better than your metal gears !

@ Ecoboost Rules ---Whatever it is that your smoking, I want some. Very delusional drug.

@ James
You must be joking. The ZR2 obviously turned around because of the Michigan flat land boys that were driving, not because the truck wasn't capable. I live here in western Colorado and have seen several ZR2s over Imogene and Black Bear, no problem. That's embarrassing for you to post such an ignorant comment

Solid rear axle?

This is NOT a Hinda Ridgeline, it is a vehicle powered by a Hinda engine, not the same thing!

And why do we only focus on Class 7?

James, the ZR2 was not designed to be a rock crawler, but even with that it puts the Jeep Rubican Wrangler to shame in MOAB and the Michigan rocks

It is it not not a Ridgeline? I'm pretty proud of it and proud to be a member of the Honda family.

How is it not not a Ridgeline? I'm pretty proud of it and proud to be a member of the Honda family.

LOL "modified" ? It is a 100% tube chassis purpose built race truck, there is not a single piece of ridgeline in the entire truck except the engine. Class 7 is an unlimited class except for a 6cyl engine and 85"? track width, there are a few older stock frame rangers that show up from time to time but it is almost all full tube frame rigs with no connection to production vehicles at all.

Jeff Sinclair

you're not as proud as I am with my F-150 Eco-Boost

I have total strangers walk up to me saying "wow what a nice truck"

if you own a Honda Ridgeline you may get soccer moms say: "wow, that's a cute little SUV"

No, no they aren't. You said it yourself that the plastic gears are designed to fail.

Funny why are guys with aluminum F-150's constantly posting about their hubs grinding. Why are so many Raptor guys replacing their IWE's for the 4th... 5th...even 6th time.

Did I mention how proud I am of my aluminum F-150 Eco-boost

Guys will come up to me and ask "Wow, why does the engine sound like my wife's car?"

I just love the V8 sound coming from the speakers. BEST IN CLASS

It has SO much POWER when I have to haul flowers to the office or my pedal bike to the park

Why why why would anyone get a real truck?

i'm getting sick and tired of all the bias against the F-150 Eco-Boost in here!
Even PUTC isn't even posting any stories about the Eco-Boost!
im sick or it, SICK OF IT !

funny how it's the #1 selling truck and only here everybody trashes it
you all are just jealous

I love my re-cycled beer can the F150
When my front hubs grind I can still get a smell of the beer that the aluminum body used to hold.
The sound of a turbo-charged lawn mower, Best in class fuel economy.
The fresh air from all the poor fitting doors.
Frequent trips to the dealership for re-calls, getting to know the mechanics quite well. Plenty of free coffee and donuts..
Why would anyone buy another Truck ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5f-zj3l10E

@ecoboost, i hear ya. i think the best part is i get to drive fords latest and greatist at the loaner rental lot. lol

I can't believe how jealous everyone is about my AMAZING Eco-Boost.
I'M SICK OF IT !
WHO wouldn't go buy a truck because it's the #1 selling? That is the MOST important factor
WHO wouldn't want to brag about the MOST powerful V6 turbo EVER?
I can't believe that the ONLY stories PUTC posts anymore are my RECALLS
I know it's BEST IN CLASS because Ford said so
I know it gets beat by a big V8 in almost EVERY category but that's NOT important
I know I have to be GENTLE with my aluminum pickup bed but that's ok because I DON'T need a truck for that
I'M SICK OF THE JEALOUSY

To all of you guys posting that this isn't anything like a stock Ridgeline, I have one question for you: What vehicle in this class is stock? This is not a Baja-race-ready Ridgeline competing against a stock ZR2. You can't have it both ways.

PUTC

What has happened to you?
A few years ago you used to have a lot of stories about the F-150 Eco-Boost.
You loved the F-150 and inspired me to own one!

you had me at hello,, you had me at HELLO !

now you broke my heart by falling in love with the Ram truck, you even have a picture of the Ram on the home page
never a story about the F-150

It's fun to see people hate the Ridgeline when they know nothing about it. They defend their heavy, loud, uncomfortable pieces of junk that will not out and have the bed fall off at some point like they're amazing. I've owned so called "real" trucks and couldn't wait to get rid of them. If you're not a contractor or hauling a fifth wheel then the Honda is perfect. More comfortable, handles better, runs better and will keep it's value. Good luck selling your best to death F150 in ten years.

Skipjackk

#1 Consumer Reports Magazine that everybody knows they are in love with Honda has the 2018 F-150 as their TOP recommended truck AND the top comfortable long trip vacation vehicle.

#2 Motor Trend has the 2018 F-150 as Truck of the Year !

#3 The 2018 F-150 with the 2.7 Eco-Boost gets BETTER MPG than the Ridgeline and has voted by the EPA as the TOP MPG gasoline truck.

#4 The F-150 that has MORE power, BETTER MPG can tow 14,700 lbs where the Ridgeline can only tow 5000 lbs

#5 The F-150 has the BEST resale valve of ANY truck according to kbb.com

#6 My 2016 F-150 resale value is $38,500 as per kbb.com where I paid $33,500 for it after discounts soooo I made $5000 where my used F-150 is worth MORE than what I paid for it.

#7 The Ridgeline is a Honda Pilot SUV with a plastic bed, front wheel drive and you can't control the 4x4, when stuck the traction control will only function as long as the front wheels spin w/o the truck moving (the truck has to move before the 4x4 engages)

#8 The Ridgeline requires timing belt changes at 25K miles at a cost of $2200

#9 The Ridgeline has horrible crash test results where the stronger built F-150 is #1 in crash tests

#10 The aluminum F-150 will never rust and will last forever

Ya Ridgeline is great if you want a car with a bed. It sits right there next to a Subaru Baja. The Subaru probably has more ground clearance too LOL. "The Honda is perfect unless your a contractor or pulling a fifth wheel" LOL. Ya right, you mean pulling anything at all, my small camper is heavier than the Ridgeline's max tow. The Ridgeline is a great "truck" for those who want a truck but don't need one.

@ ecoturd rules

You continue to prove that you don't even know your own truck that your so in love with. The max towing capacity is not 14,700...you don't even know what the available engine options are, you proved that on the last F-150 recall story that you posted on bragging it wasn't an ecoturd and it was! LMFAO.

Sean

go look at the TFL Truck Gauntlet and the F-150 with the 3.5 Eco-Boost always wins, ALWAYS WINS !

No other truck can climb that steep mountain grade towing the max weight any faster than the F-150 3.5 Eco-Boost

Everybody I know is getting rid of their super-heavy duty trucks and replacing them with the F-150 3.5 Eco-Boost when they need to tow heavy.

You must be living in a cave if you don't know that!

@ ecoturd
Hahaha what drugs are you on? Again you don't even know your own truck LMFAO
"Everybody I know is getting rid of their super-heavy duty trucks and replacing them with an Ecoboost" 😂
First of all you don't know very many people obviously...most heavy duty trucks have a diesel engine, you would have to be drunk like yourself to trade a heavy duty diesel for an ecoturd grocery getter! My D-Max would obliterate your truck. Go drink a little more

@ ecoturd
What's the max tow capacity of an ecoturd F-150? What are the engine options available? You are more amazing than your ecoturd lol

@ Ecoboost Rules ---Whatever it is that your smoking,
You better stop it.
Very delusional drug.

then throw me out
ban me from posting

maybe you should rename this from PUTC to AEBC (Attack Eco-Boost .Com)

Hey Chingon...must be you took your meds recently. It is rare for you not to post in ALL CAPS raging on and on about GM trucks. I bet you know my neighbor Frank and his friend Chris.

then throw me out
ban me from posting

maybe you should rename this from PUTC to AEBC (Attack Eco-Boost .Com)

Sounds to me like basic facts gets them riled up, it's pretty sad.

That thing looks just like the Ridgeline I just bought from the Honda dealer!! I can't wait to do some Baja mall hopping! I don't know how they can even call that a Ridgeline...

@ Tony and Dave

The point, that you missed, was GM’s test crew weren’t confident in running a pretty moderate trail.
To bring up Black Bear is equally embarrasing, as aside from a couple tight turns and off camber spots, it is more hype than horror. I’ve run it with a fullsize. Meh. Great photos though!
I’ve wheeled with the Watsons, worn out trail rigs, and been all over the west.
If you want a ZR2, cool for you. But very few STOCK trucks are more than gimmick packages and compromises.
