Pickup Truck Sales Breakdown: Second Quarter 2018

IMG_5945 II

There's no doubt the first half of 2018 has been a good one for the auto industry, especially if you were selling pickup trucks. Six of 11 pickups had a strong second quarter, with eight out of the 11 beating their 2017 numbers by a healthy margin. If sales in the second half of 2018 simply repeat the first half, the sales tally at the end of the year will be 17 million units; however, most prognosticators are seeing strong headwinds in the auto industry's future due to trade wars resulting from U.S. and foreign tariff strategies.

In the mid-size class, the Toyota Tacoma continued to break sales records as Toyota gets more creative at its Mexico and San Antonio plants, squeezing more vehicles out of both plants by running three shifts. The Chevrolet Colorado continues to be the No. 2 player, putting Chevrolet on track to sell more mid-size pickups than ever before. Honda is the only player in the class to be in the red in both yearly and quarterly sales, but much of that has to do with limited Alabama plant capacity, since the popular Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV are produced at the same plant as the Ridgeline.

The full-size truck arena is probably the healthiest class in the auto industry right now, which is good news for pickup truck makers because those vehicles bring in the highest gross profits. Ford is on track to sell close to 1 million F-Series pickups by the end of the year, which means it might sell close to 700,000 F-150s. The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 will likely be available with all its powertrain options by fall; Ram will continue to sell the previous-generation Ram 1500 as a 2019 under the Classic badge. GM will benefit from a two-plant strategy as it simultaneously builds old and new half-ton pickup trucks (the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500) by the end of the year.

From the manufacturer perspective, GM's full-size and mid-size strategy is doing the best job of providing consumers with more pickup choices. And when you combine all pickup truck sales, GM is just inching ahead of Ford. Of course, with the arrival of the new 2019 Ford Ranger in dealerships before the end of the year, that is likely to change. Probably the single bright spot on the horizon for pickup truck sales is that the economy seems to be doing well, with more people returning to the workforce. That could be good news for the construction industry and even the housing market, which are always good indicators of how strong truck sales are likely to be.

@ Ford Drools
When was the last time a Ford Diesel beat the Duramax in a performance comparison?? That small truck that can't tow sh*t always out tows that Ford Piece! Just accept it. The Piece has a higher tow rating but that means Jack Sh*t! I can "overload" the Duramax and still out tow the Ford...

The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks are the SAME truck (they go down the same factory line, have the same engines, etc.) except for some minor exterior and interior differences to attract different type of buyers. The same with the Colorado and Canyon- it's the SAME truck but with minor changes to attract different buyers. So combining the Silverado and Sierra numbers together and combining the Colorado and Canyon sales numbers together makes sense. This dual truck strategy is GM's way of getting different buyers to basically buy the same truck. GM has already sold 478,671 trucks YTD! Maybe Toyota and Nissan should try this dual truck strategy on some of their trucks since their total truck sales are a joke. Those companies' executives are the ones that should be worried.

This must be the huge sheep following that GMSARNTGREAT was talking about..... Jajajajaja

@ Ford drools

Your argument is comical... I have more HP, less gears, and more weight and beat your ecobust or equal it in FE and performance. That's funny

All while having the true V8/sound coming from exhaust. Not from my stereo...but go ahead enjoy that fake.sound

It's really funny too see a loud V8 lose to a quiet V6.

Function over form all day, errr day!!!

I can "overload" the Duramax and still out tow the Ford...

Posted by: Sean | Jul 11, 2018 11:36:53 AM

don't get caught by DOT they would have a hay day, god forbid you have an accident while overloaded i'm sure with today's society a lawyer would make short work of you

@ Frank

U see thats were u lie to yourself....it doesn't beat it. Lol. Poor guy.

@ Ford drools

It doesn't have to be annoying loud to appreciate a V8 tone. But u wouldn't known that bc u don't have a V8.

GM is a desperate Co! you can see it in their ad's having to bash every one else.

What a waste of tax-payers money - Poorly run Company with poor products. The Gov't should had let them tank.

@Ford Rules GM Drools

Let me do you a favor. This comments section here at PUTC is pretty rough/tumble but sometimes it gets downright mean, so try to protect yourself.

Just a hint.

Having said that, in your comment I cc'd above you sounded like the guy who's married to the fat homely chick trying to prevail against the guy who's got three really hot girlfriends who compete for his time and attention.

I'm sure YOUR wife/girlfriend is nice looking but the argument you made has a lame ring to it. Just an FYI

I would say a company that is getting rid of all of their cars except the mustang is the company thats a disaster! Their cars are junk so they are abandoning them. Just wait bc its coming...oil prices will rise again and Ford will be caught with their pants down.

@ PJ

thanks for the FYI, by reading the comments you post on here i'll take that as a compliment

Maybe you should just take some deep breaths. Fuel prices? Fuel shortages? Are you still living in 1974?

The US is producing so much crude oil, natural gas and refined distillates (gas, ethanol) today that we're on the verge of becoming the world's biggest exporter of energy. Russia, Britain, the entire OPEC cabal are dumping oil in the markets and hoping not to incur the wrath of the IMF.

Are you watching CNN again

@re quote,

I wouldn't bother with that ignant, a far cry from education. Little does she know that the humping company she loves is in far worse shape.

@ both u guys

I said in the future.....
That's the problem with most people. They don't look to far ahead into the future...u 2 cant even look 10 minutes into the future bc your to busy trying to remember what u did 5 minutes ago. That's what driving a Ford does to u poor guys...like a bobble head!!!!

It will bite them in the rear!! Just wait

As for frank. U silly billy. Your cerebral cortex is so damaged from all the meds, don't try to insult my intellect with your pre-k mind......poor guy

@ TNT
I said in the future.....
as ignorant as you are your future don't look to bright, do you struggle to find friends ?

@ re quote

Ignorant? Hmm...u and frank must be twins. Retort to name calling when u have no facts to back it up.

If u are naive to think gas is going to stay low. Keep puffing in whatever it is u are puffing bc it will jump up again.

TNTGMC = GMRSGREAT

Pathetic!

The 2019 Blazer was spied in the streets. All I have to say......

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Gas prices are going up as we speak. Up almost .20/gal in the last two months where I live

@ frank

Lol. Franky boy we have told u this before. We are 2 different people. We don't get off on using others user names like yourself.

As for Pathetic.. Look into mirror....u defend the 5.4L. Now thats PATHETIC

@ tony

Exactly. Its gone up 40 cents here in Midwest... But u can't tell people like Frank and his henchman anything. They know it all, remember

u defend the 5.4L. Now thats PATHETIC

Posted by: TNTGMC | Jul 11, 2018 3:10:22 PM

Why wouldn't I, owned them both. The 5.4L was a better puller.

Period!

oil prices will rise again and Ford will be caught with their pants down.

Posted by: TNTGMC | Jul 11, 2018 1:18:47 PM

at least i won't my 3.5 TT gets better FE than your 6.2
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
when oil prices rise you'll have to get that 4 popper from GM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
now that's funny

This has already been established, Frank still drives a 5.4.

Period!

Posted by: Sean | Jul 11, 2018 3:23:41 PM

You can't read for $h!t.

@ Ford Drools
Hahaha you were calling the D-Max a small truck that can't tow and your in an ecoturd!! LMFAO!
"Don't get caught by the DOT"...LOL nice try on changing the subject earlier

@ Frank
I think you meant to say your 5.4 is Sh*t!!

We know

Gas prices are going up as we speak. Up almost .20/gal in the last two months where I live...Posted by: Tony | Jul 11, 2018

Tony do you remember what you were paying for gas five years ago?

@ fors drools

Easy there....take a deep breath! We've already established that my 6.2L gets just as good FE and better performance than your junk ecoturd. Its OK...I know its hard to swallow but u can do it there champ!! Man, your last post really iterates how upset you are that a V8 outperforms your little engine when all the guys at the Ford dealership told u lies, after lies....it sucks to be u fella!

@ papajim

5 years ago I paid what I'm paying now here in Midwest. It was 2.75

Now ten or twelve years ago I was paying 3.80 bc I had just gotten rid of my 2 stroke jetski for a more FE 4 stroke. My 2/stroke would only last me half day at lake if I was gentle with it....the 4 stroke lasted all day and some of the other.

@ papajim
Ya another .20/gal I'll be paying exactly what I did 5 years ago. I expect it to be more by end of summer

Ya another .20/gal I'll be paying exactly what I did 5 years ago. I expect it to be more by end of summer

@Tony

Wrong, sir. AAA says the national average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.49 in 2013. In 2012 it was 3.60.

Today's news media yells about gas prices that they would have been crowing about back in the Obama years.

AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....Once again FORD sells the MOST TRUCKS IN THE WORLD. My Uncle Chingon can sure pick them. He has loved FORDS ALL HIS LIFE and taught me at a young age that GM SUCKS and RAM sucks too!!!! So cry on you crybaby GM and RAM Fans!!!

ahahahahahhaHAHAHAHAHAA

@ papajim

Wrong sir, didn't know you were paying for my gas. I could care less what you googled about AAA. That's an average. As I said, another .20/gal it'll be EXACTLY what I paid 5 years ago. We're at 3.05/gal now...and rising

Frank's pathetic old Sooper Dooty with the anemic 5.4 was spied in the streets. All I have to say is....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Hey papa what am I paying for gas??

Everything but Ford = SUCKS
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I can "overload" the Duramax and still out tow the Ford...

Liar

@Tony.

You are confused. If you're paying over 3.00 the difference is gasoline tax. Your state and local taxes are higher than the national average. Sounds like the place you live is gouging drivers for an extra .15 per gallon.

That means you and your fellow citizens should raise hell with your public officials and demand to know what you receive in return for having higher than average gas taxes in your communities.

Not my fault.

Papajim claims another is confused.

That coming from the poster who claimed a Buick 3.8L V6 Turbo won at the Brickyard in the Indy 500

Hahaha

Does BA stand for big *ss?

How much are you paying for gas, or do they call it petrol down there?

TNTGMC = GMRSGREAT

Pathetic!

Posted by: Frank | Jul 11, 2018 3:06:13 PM

That is incorrect. Of course you're used to being incorrect.

“ Does BA stand for big *ss? “

Good one from the clown who claimed a Buick 3.8L V6 Turbo won at the Brickyard in the Indy 500.

Get use to seeing that comment from me that proves how stupid you are

Just browsing through a auto repair tool catalog and found tools such as:
- broken spark plug remover kit for triton 3 valve engines.
- Ford spark plug insert installer.
- triton spark plug extractor.
- Ford triton spark plug thread repair kit.
- timing tool for for 3.5 and 3.7.

Just to name a few. Ford is good for the aftermarket tool manufacturer. Haha!

Hey, GM! If you can't outsell Ford's fullsize-class trucks after 40 plus years, just sell more classes! If the others start selling those classes and you once again fall behind Ford, well maybe you could buy Tonka Trucks and/or Little Tike Trucks and include those in your sales total!

Posted by: Dale | Jul 11, 2018 11:28:51 AM

Hmmm, that's why GM is the 3rd best selling automaker and Ford is what? Oh, and its been that way for going on what 60? 70 maybe even 80 years. Get da F out here Fordtard! Yeah almost forgot its Ford who builds tonka trucks

“ Hmmm, that's why GM is the 3rd best selling automaker and Ford is what? Oh, and its been that way for going on what 60? 70 maybe even 80 years. “
