Chevrolet Turns Up the Off-Road Volume With Colorado ZR2 Bison

Chevrolet recently debuted the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison as an answer for hardcore off-roaders looking for more style and capability from their backcountry exploration vehicle. This new trim package is the result of a collaboration between Chevy engineers and American Expedition Vehicles, a longtime aftermarket off-road outfitter that has specialized in upgrading 4x4 Jeeps and Ram pickups in the past.

We last saw these two working together at the 2017 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, in the form of a generically named concept vehicle with all sorts of cool and interesting details. Check out of the AEV concept overlander  video here.

Earlier this year, AEV displayed specialty parts designed for the current Colorado ZR2 at the Overland Expo West, which had us thinking something more significant might be coming. And here it is: the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison.

Among the ZR2 Bison's more stylish and significant changes are an exclusive flow-through Chevrolet grille (a la the 2019 Silverado 1500) and larger fender flares. The new trim also will include Bison-specific 17-by-8-inch aluminum wheels with 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires. Several Bison decals will adorn the sides of the truck and the tailgate will sport a unique AEV Bison nameplate. Underneath will be five separate AEV skid plates created to protect the transmission, transfer case, oil pan, fuel tank, and the front and rear locking differentials. Other AEV customizing parts will also be avaialble, such as the pictured high-mounted air intake. And in case you were wondering, the Colorado's class-exclusive Multimatic DSSV shocks and suspension are unchanged.

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison will be offered in both crew (short bed) and extended cabs (long bed) with a choice of the 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine or torquey turbo-diesel 2.8-liter Duramax inline-four-cylinder. The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison will go on sale in January 2019 and is backed by a full factory warranty. Pricing will be released closer to its on-sale date.

Great job GM! Offering a true off roader and not just a sand runner!

Its also great they're offering it with both engine choices!

Wonder where the Ford Raptaurus is? Oh ya 2 years away! But there are some sweet pics of it to look at all over the internet. Along with a HD video for the Ford boys

Garbage, go electric. Bollinger B1 has 20 inches of ground clearance or ten, you choose with a button and it has a smooth flat bottom to it like a toboggan. No exhaust or tranny to deal with, no snorkel needed, instant torque, easy to fix and cheaper, true innovation, true inspired engineering to make things different and better for the customer. Relying on old technology is ignorance. Better is coming, too bad Chevy is inept to get there. Oil companies love them which is why they wont change for the better.

Battery boy: Where does most of our electricity come from again?

If electrics were such a good idea, the industry wouldn't need gov't tax dollars to barely survive. Plus, we have no such infrastructure for battery-powered vehicles.

Free market is the answer.

Given the direction of midsize truck prices lately, I'm going to estimate the cost at around $55K-$60K. It's a shame, It looks like an interesting truck. But only a percentage of buyers will be able to afford it. Not for blue collars. Looks like something my student's parents might buy them while the teacher's parking lot is full of jalopies.

I want the front bumper for my ZR2, You would have thought they would have put more horsepower in it then a WT has.....
31 inch tires came stock on my ZR2, most fan boys were hoping 33's would be standard on the bison as quite a few upgrade to the 33's

ya don't see a Raptor with a generic V6...

as for skid plates, might be cheaper to get all of the aftermarket skid plates that are already being used.
other then that, just a few emblems and an ugly rear bumper

Free market is the answer. Posted by: redbloodedxy | Sep 6, 2018

BATTERY BOY???

I almost blew my Ensure milkshake all over the clinic. Now the nurses are making me turn the computer off, but the laugh was worth it.

Hahaha!

Now that's a great off-road design. Ford is undoubtedly the first customer. They need some ideas for something other than a mall crawler.

Now that's a nice tire and sticker package with a cute water snorkel for all the tough guys who want to get hosed (im sure it will cost a premium) for a still anemic Colorado.....

Surely you're not alluding to the lame V6 in the Tacoma as competition. The GM six smokes the Toyota 3.5

GM is one of front runners in electrification and autonomous vehicles.

Your bitch is quite frankly unfounded and definitely not well researched.

So go buy a Ranger Raptor.

Oh wait.....

Keep waiting...

And waiting....

Nevermind....

@ Fullsize

Keep waiting for your Raptaurus! It will be here in 2 years, while the Zr2 will still be off road king!

Or you could go pay $70K+ for a plastic 4 wheel drive system in a Raptor than won't go off road! Your choice!

Ford associated with fires is like a stripper with a stripper pole.

One doesn't function properly without the other!

I dont buy small trucks.

If i wanted to spend ridiculous money on a true premium truck then i would get a real Raptor.

Hey PUTC, Get on this!

Based on the fix, it sounds like shoddy assembly or design, not an issue with the pretensioner as some here have tried to make us believe.

This is an embarrassment just like papajoke and TNT. The Ranger Raptor will mop the floor with this turd.

I couldn't convince myself to spend that much coin on a toy, but that Raptor (even with plactic 4wd as you say) will outperform any truck your beloved gm makes.

Looks like GM just turned up the heat on the Ford Ranger. Hey, the Ranger is about 5 years behind and may not have enough time to adjust and make a competing product to the Bison. Of course, Ford fans can continue visiting pepboys for upgrades.

Is that what gm boys have been doing for the past 8 years since the Raptor was introduced and gm has sat gutless to do anything?? Keep on visiting pepboys.....

Motor trends test definitely doesn't agree with you. A lot of the testing showed the ZR2 and the Powerwagon outperformed it.

The raptor wasn't as good on washboard, or rocky terrain, or excessive mud.

Sandbox mall crawler. Not sure I've ever seen a dirty one.

There are applications where mid-size trucks are superior by pure dimensions. But hey, you can pay more to get less output. Ford appreciates the donation to forward their corporate rebuild.

The Raptor can't beat a power wagon or a GM.

Man that's garbage, it looks like a Lund Catalog was thrown at it.

You have that wrong, GM has a head-start, when the Ranger arrives, GM will be behind 5 years.

It's been like this for the past 50 years.

Motor Trend is more of a advertising company now but ok. If Ford would have paid more to them would they have held the testing in Baja? Where the ZR2 should have also shined since MT says its equipped with baja-bred suspension right? Or would the other 2 trucks have been so embarrased that it would have been like a Raptor-only review? Never seen one dirty? All the Raptor owners must live in your neighborhood i guess. You for real? Less output?? Thats not the story 0-60 tells, actually its not even a contest!!

Hey i rather people donate their money to Ford with a truck purchase than for my tax money to be donated to them for the rebuild.

This car is in very sporty

I agree with TNT, great job trying to keep up with Ford...

Aren't you gm guys the first to start whining when a gm loses a comparison based on measurements (subjective) other than how fast the truck is??

Just proving you wrong again is just fine with me.

Raptor has been proven by independent testes to have a flawed rear suspension. Even Ford admits it and has announced that it will change it for 2019. Look it up.
The Raptor is not a good desert runner or anything else due to this. Look at all the trouble the rear of the the truck has when up to speed on virtually any surface.

Now, ZR2 actually fits on a trail and is solid and better quality.
PowerWagon is great too.
Ford is just behind, yet the many brainless ones are fooled into thinking they have the coolest truck because it looks cool.

Electric will be able to power each wheel separately and more powerfully and efficiently.
Attach a good in-line diesel to a generator, and who needs any big batteries to power the electric drive truck.
Bingo!
You got yourself a locomotive of a truck that is lighter, more powerful, more reliable and no complicated driveline parts to hang you up off-road.

Can I say Raptaurus again? I know I sound like a douche but I love it.

Less output is based on real world results in real world situations. You Ford guys are the first to throw the 0-60 out( see duramax vs powerstroke).

So your truck loses the review by Motor Trend and now they are an advertising company? You just said the GM guys complain the most when they lose a review. Thanks for proving yourself wrong.

It's your money, if you want to donate to an inferior product, which is setting records for recalls as the most recalled vehicle in history, by all means spend away.

@ imposter using my name

Tell me it doesn't look like a Taurus, then Ill stop calling it that! LOL!!!

I struck a nerve on you poor guy...why don't you man up and use your own name......DOUCHE BAG!!!

@ Fullsize

In the comparison tests the ZR2 has gone against the Raptor, it has won! It has better on and off road abilities, handles and drives better as well!

But hey, you admit you would rather have CHEAP plastic 4 wheel drive system. An owner in a ZR2 would gladly pull you out and help you home!

WTF are you guys talking about? The only thing GM has over Ford is .3 seconds 0-60 on the duramax and powerstroke.

Other than that, the F-150 decimates all with Ecoboost.

I'd really couldn't care less what you would say, I'm out in the real world seeing it first hand.
