SEMA Survey: Exhaust Products Favored Most By Pickup Truck Enthusiasts

If the results from a recent SEMA survey hold true across the board, about half of all pickup truck enthusiasts have upgraded their exhaust system within the past 12 months, and more than 40 percent have modified their intake system.

Playing with the intake and exhaust is the easiest modification truck owners can make to the engine without getting the stink eye from smog inspectors. Performance gains are usually modest, but often noticeable. For some, the sonic rewards coming out of the tailpipe and the under-hood aesthetic improvements make exhaust and intake modifications worth the money.

In these days of volatile fuel prices, intake and exhaust modifications are also promoted as methods of improving fuel economy. Getting back to the SEMA survey, 63 percent said they purchased aftermarket parts to improve their gas mileage.

Called the Automotive Lifestyles Survey, SEMA compiled the report based on responses from more than 3,000 enthusiasts who subscribe to automotive magazines and online forums. About 25 percent of those surveyed owned a pickup. Here are the Top 10 overall pickup modifications:

  1. Exhaust kit – pipes, muffler: 49%
  2. Polish/wax: 45%
  3. Air intake – performance filter replacement: 42%
  4. Air intake – cold-air conversion: 41%
  5. Performance fluids – oil, lubricant: 38%
  6. Bedliner – drop-in or spray-on: 36%
  7. Tires – plus size: 35%
  8. Trailer hitch: 35%
  9. Window tinting: 32%
  10. Suspension – springs, shocks: 31%

There's probably duplication in the air-intake categories, as many respondents could have argued that the filter in their cold-air conversion was a performance filter and checked both boxes. Trailer hitches used to be higher on these lists, but in recent years automakers have been making tow packages standard on many mid- and upper-level trim packages, reducing demand for aftermarket hardware.

We asked SEMA to break down the survey a little more and indicate the most popular modifications for full-size trucks by brand. Most truck owners think alike, with performance and utility modifications taking priority. Nissan Titan owners seem to be a little more preoccupied with style. SEMA had to lump the Tacoma in with the Tundra due to a small sample size.

  2. Air intake – cold-air conversion: 51%
  3. Trailer hitch: 49%
  4. Polish/wax: 48%
  5. Bedliner – drop-in or spray-on: 46%
  6. Engine performance chip/tuner/computer: 44%
  7. Air intake – performance filter replacement: 41%
  8. Side steps: 41%
  9. Performance fluids – oil, lubricant: 41%
  10. Tires – plus size: 41%

Ford F-Series

  1. Exhaust kit – pipes, muffler: 52%
  2. Polish/wax: 48%
  3. Air intake – cold-air conversion: 46%
  4. Air intake – performance filter replacement: 45%
  5. Performance fluids – oil, lubricant: 44%
  6. Trailer hitch: 42%
  7. Gauges – custom: 41%
  8. Tires – plus size: 39%
  9. Bedliner – drop-in or spray-on: 38%
  10. Engine performance chip/tuner/computer: 36%

Nissan Titan

  1. Window tinting/lamination: 75%
  2. Alarm system: 63%
  3. Stereo – tweeter: 63%

  6. Exhaust kit – pipes, muffler: 32%

It's really interesting that Nissan and Toyota owners seem to shun aftermarket exhaust systems. In a way this just reinforces my thoughts about the people who buy domestic trucks. The day loud/obnoxious exhaust systems are outlawed will be a happy day indeed!

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard! I'm not sure where you are from, but nearly every Titan I see in Southern California has an aftermarket muffler. Usually they go with the Banks Monster Exhaust or the AeroTurbine 40/40 - and they sound good. To say that making the truck sound louder is somehow inherent of ignorant domestic truck buyers is hardly a solid argument.

You'd have been better off saying it's more a result of age than brand preference. Truth be told, most people under 30 - regardless of brand of truck they own - will make the truck louder. Whereas people 30+ have already been 'there done that' so to speak.
