Would You Buy A New Dodge Ram Pickup Today?
Posted by Mike Levine | April 30, 2009
Unable to meet its financial obligations, Chrysler is declaring a Chapter 11 bankruptcy to reorganize its debts and restructure the company in a partnership with Fiat.
These moves don't change the fact that the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 is one of the newest pickup trucks in the market with a powerful 390-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi engine, up-to-date refined interior and the best ride quality of any unloaded half-ton. The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups have time-tested 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines under their hoods. The federal government has said it will stand behind the Ram's factory warranty.
So, the question is, if you were going to buy a brand new pickup truck today, would you buy a Dodge Ram?
Comments
Yes I would by a Dodge truck with no hesitation. I have owned 3 previously and found them to be very good trucks that lived up to being RAM TOUGH!!
I wouldn't for reasons other than the filing, but I hope those that would will realize that if the government pays for the warranty, you the taxpayer are actually paying for your own warranty. Brilliant.
Definitely...why not?
Chrysler will be back shortly under Fiats control, and business will be as usual. Chapter 11, IMO, ia a mere formality.
Tied with the new Sierra's, the new Ram's are the best looking trucks on the road...period!
never not even if they gave them half price. i dont find dodge to be a really reliable brand
I have a little advice for all american truck makers. Your all falling behind the European and Japanese in terms of Technologies like variable valve timing, lean burn direct injection etc. This stuff has been around for sometime now and your "just starting" to incorporate these technologies into American cars and trucks. Now LISTEN to me "Wake up you fools" ! I am sick and tired of junk that breaks down all the time, this is not the way for auto companies to make money, your tricks have EXPIRED! Looks who's sucking air now. If you want to sell another American truck to me don't forget about the most important things like Efficiency, Economy, Durability, Reliability, Simplicity.
My final words...I WANT DIRECT INJECTION IN MY HEMI AND I WANTED IT YESTERDAY "MORE POWER AND EVEN BETTER MILAGE THAN THE NEW 2009, AND DON'T FORGET TO PUT ALL THIS IN THE 6.1 HEMI "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL WAITING FOR" TO GET YOUR ASS KICKED BY YOUR COMPETITORS.
Brad
And about those Rams , get your ass in gear and get a 6 speed transmission into one so you can compete against ford and chevy and toyota
Brad
I'm more concerned about my own job security than Chrysler going into chapter 11.
If I had the money and the confidence I'd so get the Power Wagon.
I would definetly by a 09 ram. why because I have won its the best truck I have ever had the interior kills the toyota and im getting 17mpg with the 390 hp hemi not bad I have trx4 crew cab with ram box storage . I cant live without those extra storage boxes. we give billions to irag we can put back some money here in america .chrsler gave 10 million to help 911 victims we should help them also. bob
i would!!! if had the money...and brad...the 1500 ram out runs all of those brands...and the HDs have 6 speed...
i would buy a ram but i wont, considering i have no need for a new truck right now. the ram is definitely worthy though
I've had two Dodge Rams (a 2003 and a 2007) both Hemi Quad Cab 4X4's. Both have been great trucks, but I most certainly would not consider buying one at this time. I'm already concerned enough about my financial future and I have no debt -- none. I honestly have my doubts about Fiat, the UAW and the US government making this work. Sheesh!
I just bought a 2008 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 Big Horn HEMI in August, I payed about $30,000. The truck has def been worth it. The HEMI is a beast, the truck has been reliable as it should be to this point. I have been getting an average of 22MPG on the highway and 15MPG in the city. It's as good looking as a sports car, as fast as a muscle car, as capable as any work truck, and fuel efficiency is good enough to not make me worry. So yes I would def buy a 2009 Dodge Ram because it is only a better version of the great truck I already have. Chrysler will be the strongest american car company in 5 years, mark my words!!
I've owned nothing but Dodge trucks for the last 23 years. I don't have have issue with the product, however, the government has never, I repeat never succesfully run any kind of business. I don't expect they will do any better administering a warranty. The bigger issue that will keep me from buying another Dodge, and probably any other domestic now, is that Dodge will now be run by the very organization that has been a major contributor to the demise of the US auto industry. The UAW. My next purchase will most likely be anything thats not built by the UAW.
If I had the money I would buy either an Avalanche or Silverado, nothing against the Ram. I would recommend those three to anybody looking for a truck, and definitely wouldn't mind having a Ram. Their quality seems to have improved in the last few years on certain models, and they started addressing this before the economy shat the bed.
Brad- what foreign pickups have direct injection? None that I'm aware of. Also, GM is one of the few companies actually using direct injection in any vehicles, and their starting to spread it across the lineup. Who else even uses it yet? And to lump all the American trucks together as being crap? The Silverado is one of...scratch that.. THE most reliable truck on the road.
There IS a reason they had to file Chaper 11.
Like the old saying says, "build it and they will come".
Build a decent product and people will buy it.
Simple grade 6 economics.
Mercedes saw this coming and unloaded them quick.
Also,Chrysler made a wrong move by putting all their eggs in the Hemi basket.
Just my $0.02
I wouldn't buy a Dodge or any other Chrylser product bankruptcy or not. Building nothing but CRAP for the last 30 years is what is killing them. There is only so much crap people will buy before they switch to another brand. I would rather own a GM truck before I bought anything made by the Chrysler Corporation!!! Besides Dodge thinks that everything should be HEMI equipped. "Hemi" stands for Huge Engineering Mistake Inside. Or my favorite "Mopar" Move Over People Are Racing!!
After buying 32 new Fords over the years and the last 3 being total lemons, and Ford telling me "you bought it, good luck with that", I broke down and bought a new Ram in 1994. My last Ford was in the shop 16 times in 11 months! The 1994 Ram was awesome. Since that time I have purchased 15 Chrysler products for personal and business, including 8 Rams. These have been the most trouble free vehicles I have ever owned. Yes, I would buy a new Ram!
I worked for Enterprise Rent A Car (unfortunately) for 3 years after college and I can tell you without a doubt that the Chrysler cars/trucks spent more time in the service center at the dealers than either Ford or GM products hands down. They are junk. I would never buy a Chrysler product.
I guess Brad is not very familiar with Tundras' frames rusting through in the matter of several years?
why buy a wannabe truck ram when theres a new f150 out there. goooooo ford
Bought Ford F series trucks up until 2000 when I wanted to downsize and buy a mid-size pickup with a V8. Nobody but Dodge offered one. Bought a new Dakota and sold it after 88,000 trouble free miles. Wife loved that truck (and frankly so did I). Wanted to buy a regular cab full size diesel pickup and nobody but Dodge thought about storage behind the seat. Wakeup Ford and GM! Now own a 2008 Ram/Cummins heavy duty. So far have been very impressed. The quality has been on par with the other brands. No recall notices! Heck yes....I would buy Chrysler again.
For the diesel trucks i might consider it because cummins is awesome. For the 1/2 ton its all about the Ford F-150 being as how our tax dollars didnt have to bail them out, and their quality has gone up signifgantly while chrysler remains the same or gotten worse.
Couple points:
1. I've owned 4 Dodge trucks now, no problems with any, good tough trucks.
2. To Brad: Yes, the 09 1500 needs a 6 speed, but the new Hemi does have VVT, MDS tech in it. A very modern engine in many aspects, and remember, these are engines for TRUCKS, made for towing and hauling. They have to be reliable, strong, and AFFORDABLE. A 390hp Hemi in a nice SLT 1500 that'll run you $25-27K out the door is hard to beat. Who's gonna go pay $50K+ for a truck to work with, cause thats what it'll cost. So what if you get another 1-2 mpg, you'll pay much more for it up front. And I drive up and down the freeways every day and rarely see any of these broken down trucks you speak of.
3. Do some research, Daimler siphoned off all of Chrysler's profits during the 1999-2004 Mercedes 'restructuring', when mercedes was losing money. Then Daimler broke up Chrysler's excellent design teams and forced them to do a bunch of platform sharing and anything new was old mercedes components, such as the very expensive and no more reliable mercedes 5 speed you still find in many chryslers. Z was in charge of all that. They mismanaged it, left it in shambles, and sold it off while making chrysler look bad. remember, they bought it in 1998 for $36B, got $7B for it 10 years later.
Yeah Blah Blah Dodge and Chevy Get 20 or 21 mpg only if you keep your foot out of it and it has to have the mode 4 cylinder on... Now that ashame... The Ford 4.6 V8 gets 21 mpg and its run on 8 cylinders. Also big deal if it quick 0-60.. Who's cares.. You can't drive like that every day unless you pile up some Tickets.. LOL I have a 99 new body syle Silverado extended cab short bed with 3.42 ratio with the 5.3L and I get 17.6 in the city and 22.5 on HWY. and it has a 4 speed Auto. No complain. Now my point is all Truck are good if only you take care of them and do your maint.. I've own all 3 of those Truck(Chevy,Dodge and Ford) and never had any problem. As far for others quit worrying about it. If you don't like them don't buy it then... Happy Trails!!!!!
I am the kind I do research and want a good Truck. I look for Safey such as Front and side crash rate. As far I seen is the New 2009 Ford and Tundra is the Best and Chevy, Dodge and Nissan is Poor. The side impact go the Ford and Tundra as far the Ins. Rating, But the others is Poor. But I know we take our chances. I believe everyone has there opinion of what they like. I just have to make mine as far TEST driving each one and decide which one I want. Amen!!!
I'm in the market for a mid-sized truck, so the Ram is not what I'm looking for. I would buy a Dakota if the interior didnt look like seconds from mattel. If it had as stylish an interior as the Ram, I would not hesitate to buy one with the up-graded 4.7 v8. For some reason, US manufacturers are only making half-***ed efforts at building good mid-sized trucks so I will probably be forced to buy a Nissan or Toyota.
“ A failing company also means a failing product “
trucks are for towing, off roading, hauling or just hard work...why would you make your choice only based on safety?...fruitcake
my brother have a power stroke diesel 2006 they need to change the angine last winter now is the injector need to be change,my fhather inlaw have a brand new f150 and they change the front bairing so dodge ford gm and toyota, have all problem but if i look is look like toyota quality is very low,,front end, frame engine, diferencial, etc etc,,this is what y found in internet...and not the best for gaz,
Yes, Only if they would put a 6 speed and junk the 5 speed. Also put just a Hemi V8 no MSD!!!!
great looking truck but still junk. the hemi is fine for a drag strip but put 10,000 pounds behind it. then it cant get out of its own way.
This is really a shame..The whole auto industry and our economy today..I really would not buy another...My 03 quad cab gave me all kinds of problems..Dropped a valve...Front wheel bearings twice, rear brakes, front brake sensor failure...I could go on but I amunder the impression these are cheaper designed trucks..Now the newer ones may be better but my 03 is paid for and I had already made up my mind..I went a couple weeks ago and drove an 09..The are nice but 48k..Not that much nicer..And I was surprised I couldn't tell much difference in the ride quality...Or quietness of the cab..Bed is really small now also...
I liked the interior a lot but not worth a trade up..Also liek the warranty but now everything is up in the air and there is a lot of questions..I also feel Chrysler just didn't have the options they needed also..Ford has some fuel effecient vehicles and GM as well..They need some effecient cars and suvs like Ford's escape Hybrid..These big muscle v8s are not gonna carry the day anymore...They have smaller engines like the 4.7 but the milage sucks...It looks like they are all gonna be GM before its over.....Government Motors....
Matt,
Good post about Mercedes screwing up Chrysler. The only reason it happened was because the big wigs of the two companies wanted some extra zeroes in the paychecks. Chrysler was thriving in '98, and had over $12 BILLION in cash reserves. Who spent it? Daimler. There was no reason for a takeover. Quite frankly, I won't miss LaSorda or Nardelli. Chrysler needs car and truck people in charge; people who have a passion for the business; not money people, like LaSorda, Nardelli, and the COMMUNIST U.S. GOVERNMENT!!! Geez, government backed vehicle warranties. Who do you think is paying for all of it? Not the government!!!
Its a good truck, but only the factories and farms who haul heavy load needs these pickups, not the households.
Also for those who want to haul lot of things which are light in weight, Ford Transit Van is coming which is very fuel efficient.
The markets for the Pickups will soon decline.
eally a shame..The whole auto industry and our economy today..I really would not buy another...My 03 quad cab gave me all kinds of problems..Dropped a valve...Front wheel bearings twice, rear brakes, front brake sensor failure...I could go on but I amunder the impression these are cheaper designed trucks..Now the newer ones may be better but my 03 is paid for and I had already made up my mind..I went a couple weeks ago and drove an 09..The are nice but 48k..Not that much nicer..And I was surprised I couldn't tell much difference in the ride quality...Or quietness of the cab..Bed is really small now also...

let it flop, its not even a Hemi, just brain washed hype, the new F-150 is killing it, and they are great and 6.2L Boss soon.
I think the nasty stigma of bankruptcy will linger around the Chrysler name for a while, which already has the company's public image in question. Hey, when the manufacturer downright EARNED a bad credit rating and ended up in bankruptcy, Chrysler has to pay the additional price of making it up to it's customers. This is not unlike individuals who screw up their personal credit due to their own financial ineptness - they have to pay higher interest rates on credit purchases until they "prove" themselves worthy again. The entire fiasco will likely spoil sales potential for years to come. That said, in order for me to consider a new '09 or '10 Ram (Regular cab V8, thank you) there would have to be at least $10K discount off the window sticker.
NO!.....Chrysler needs to go down. They should of never...never gotten any of our tax earned bailout money since they are privately own. The only brand worth anything is Dodge and Jeep....that's it
YES, I have owned Chrysler products in the past that have had minor problems I could live with. The 2004 RAM 1500 I have now is far superior to any Chrysler product I have had in the past. I have had it 5+ years bought new. 24,500 miles. Other than oil changes I had one early on warranty problem. The sensor for the speed control became erratic and was replaced. Probably because it was built in August 2003 and bought in December (sat on the lot for 4 months). The dealer changes the oil and filter every 3,000 miles for $7.77 for as long as I own the vehicle. I hope he sticks around because I hope to have this for another ten years.
I do not own a Ram or a Chrysler product, and I will never own one. If I won one in a raffle, I'd sell it immediately. The Ram is inferior to the F-series and I will not through my actions imply that I approve of the massive theft of taxpayer dollars to bail out a private company or to bail out the union that bankrupted that company.
It may cost an extra trillion in taxpayer dollars before Obama and Pelosi accept reality, but Chrysler is going to die (GM too). F-series is the only truck I would buy right now.
I think it's a great looking truck. I would have no problem with it and would buy it even with Chrysler's current financial situation. In fact, that should motivate us to support them otherwise companies could not move forward if we only supported ones that were already going strong.
My only reason I wouldn't buy one, is because I prefer the 09 F150. If that Ram 1500 crew was available with a 6.5' bed, i might take another look.
yes i would just need 2 get a job
the dodge is a great looking truck. the hemi is great for one thing, the drag strip. put 10,000 pounds behind it and see what happens. its a gutless turd.
Mike, I'd buy a Dodge Ram in a heartbeat if I wasn't saving up for my F-150 Raptor... You know what I'm sayin! I'm still thinking either Black or Blue.
Hell no. Dodge is JUNK just like GM.
I've been a die hard doge/mopar fan for years. however, with this new deal being structured in that the horrible UAW would own 55% & the Gov't owns 8%, I won't buy another chrysler product again. I could've dealt with Fiat being part owner, but not the UAW. These are very sad times for Dodge.
Yes, I would buy a new Dodge Ram today...
Blah,
You are a complete ignorant fool...The Ram is a high tech truck, first to have mds, stability control ect..Chrysler products are reliable..The least recalls of any major manufacturer. What about Honda/Acura's bad transmissions, timing belts, head gaskets,Toyota's motor problems, trans problems, bad welds, rust problems,I can go on forever..Dodge Ram is the longest lasting full size around..
The reason Chrysler is in trouble is because of Mercedes,They took Chrysler's money to make their money losing Mercedes brand like it was making a profit.Mercedes was losing money in the 90's..in the 1990's Chrysler was the most profitable car company..Also Mercedes wanted Chrysler's high tech electronic division as well..The merger of equals was more of a rape of Chrysler with infighting that ripped the company appart,by the time they decided to work together some what 300/Magnum /Charger the economy was turning and they were going in the whole from 5 years of infighting..
Ryan,
Also the side impact testing was done with a Dodge 2 wheel drive with 17" rims, add 20" rims it sits taller and the side impact rating is a 5 star..any full size truck is safer than any car ..period..
Ryan ,
I sorry,I got your name mixed up with Randy..Some idiots on here really get me fired up..
Anyway,I do repair work for rental car outlets here when they are out or not covered by manufactures warranty, and they have alot of Honda's/Toyota's and they are d.o.a all the time,Chrysler products seem to hold up better thats why rental car outlets use them the most..
I had a 97 f150 lariat 4x4 it was the worst vehicle I have ever owned I had 29,000 miles when I got rid off it To many problems to list. I bought a 06 ram[ great truck} and I just bought a 09 ram{incredible truck}. If you test drive the 09 ram you will buy it!!!!
I have owned a 94 Dakota, a 97 ram that I kept for 12 years and traded it for a 05 Ram Diesel. I have had nothing but trouble free miles in all of them. I would buy a new one now, but am waiting of the 2010 HD....I think all the American Trucks are great. I will NEVER own a POS Toyota. They are by far the UGLYIEST TRUCKS ever made. I don't want something that rusts apart in a few years! Only one country buids trucks...that is America!
