Diesel F-150 Still on Back Burner

Diesel F-150 Still On Back Burner

Automotive News reports that a diesel-powered Ford F-150 remains in purgatory while Ford studies the right time — if there is one — to introduce a compression-ignition version of its popular half-ton pickup.

Ford had previously announced that a diesel engine would be available for the F-150 some time in 2010. In 2008, the company showed its dealers a 4.4-liter V-8 diesel that was said to have 9 percent more power, 15 percent more torque and 20 percent better fuel economy than the F-150's 5.4-liter V-8 gas engine.

Then, last fall, when diesel fuel prices averaged approximately $3.80 a gallon, Ford execs told PickupTrucks.com that the diesel F-150 program had been placed on the back burner. A continued premium at the pump for diesel (relative to gasoline) was cited as the primary reason for re-examining the business case of a light-duty diesel engine. The execs also said Ford's upcoming EcoBoost gas V-6 could be the right solution for light-duty diesel F-150 buyers.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average price of diesel in the U.S. is $2.20 a gallon, up from a 52-week low of $2.09 a gallon in March.

GM and Toyota have also indefinitely paused their small-diesel programs, and Chrysler recently said a diesel engine for the Dodge Ram 1500 won’t be available until 2011 at the earliest.

There's a good quote from Mark Fields, Ford's president for the Americas, about a diesel F-150's indefinite timing after the jump.

Ford should just produce the 4.4l. Studies cannot predict the true demand for this truck.

It should be able to run on B20.

It's sad to see this product offering tabled. But you can certainly understand why. Fuel prices is only one thorn in their side. Now they have to add UREA to the emissions system to be compliant. Extra option cost to the customer and another item needing service along with all the other hardware attached to the exhaust. The government simply has too much free time on their hands! Pick on something else for a while.

Anything more on the Coyote 5.0 L. for the F-150's ? Interesting on all these engines coming out!!!!! Way to go Ford...

Ford needs to come out with the 4.4 diesel. They are making all their decisions on "What If's". There are so many truck guys out there waiting on it. COME ON FORD, BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.

Yeah Ryan does have a point. I know for a fact I will not buy a truck from Ford until they come out with this truck. I know a lot of other people who are waiting and will buy this truck before it hits the showroom floors.

They could even succesfully sell the F-series in Europe, if it were available with a diesel engine!

A lot of people on the internet say they won't buy it until the diesel hits. But as soon as the diesel hits, how many will actually put their money where their mouth is? There is a reason it is not out now, because only 5 people would buy it over the regular gas engine.

We don't get the diesel which may sell several hundred thousands but we get the F 150 Raptor which they may sell 3 or 4. How dumb is that. Ford says diesel prices are not where they need to be in order to sell the diesel truck. They continue to monitor prices. But apparently now close enough. Right now, where I live, diesel is 12 cents cheaper than unleaded.

I was going to get a new truck from toyato, but have been waiting for Ford to come out with this f-150 Diesel Get it off the back burner.
