Toyota To Shutter U.S. Plant Where Tacoma Is Built
The Associated Press reports that Toyota has decided to end operations at the New United Motor Manufacturing Plant in Northern California, where the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck is produced. The Tacoma is the best selling truck in its segment.
Tacoma production is expected to move to Toyota's truck plant in San Antonio, Texas, where the Tundra full-size truck is currently built. Tacomas are also assembled at a Toyota factory in Tijuana, Mexico.
The NUMMI plant was established in 1984 as a 50/50 joint venture with General Motors. NUMMI began producing a truck, originally called the Hilux, in 1991. Four years later, the Hilux was redesigned and re-named the Tacoma. NUMMI had been producing approximately 163,000 Tacomas a year.

That's a shame. I still drive a 1994 pickup built in that plant. This was always considered an "American" vehicle since it was built by UAW workers.
I think the cars that came out of that plant were some of the best built by Toyota. This is a decision they should reconsider.
Its not american Vehicle, its build in United States by people, but its Japan Parts... Nothing wrong with the Tacoma.. Now everything is Global (world wide) Its funny how people don't understand.. Welcome to Texas Toyota!!!
This is another case of the foreign car makers sticking to the
American taxpayer. This place was built with a load of tax breaks.
Is the plant in Texas, a right to work state, UAW friendly?
What's a right to work state?
I'm up here in MI.
I think it has too do with the union or not.
Could someone explain.
thanks.
Yes, Texas is a right to work state.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-to-work_law
Basically, it's legal right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union.
GM helped this along when it dumped NUMMI into the "Old GM" dust bin and left Toyota with the plant and it's costs.
basically they're really just bailing out of CALIFORNIA,why stay in a state ready to implode and tax all hell out of you to address stupid spending habits?
the UAW in their greed sure didnt help themselves either,it is unsustainable to give 75% wages, and full health care to those who no longer produce wealth for the company.
I'd NEVER buy a new NUMMI car of any stripe..
also the C.A.R.S. was telling with 95% going to FOREIGN brands..guess GM didnt make the cut.
Ford is the ONLY American car company to not ask for any...any money, they cut costs and hedged bets with better personal spending habits, even WITH UAW employees
"This is another case of the foreign car makers sticking to the

How about the U.S. makes sticking it to the American taxpayer?
"Is the plant in Texas, a right to work state, UAW friendly?"
Does it matter?
"Ford is the ONLY American car company to not ask for any...any money, they cut costs and hedged bets with better personal spending habits, even WITH UAW employees"
Toyota is still a better company...
Stock value much higher, better debt ratings and respected more than any other auto company...
Maybe the big 3 should look at the above picture... no lower shock mounts hanging far below the rear axle, no torsion bars mounted on the lower a-arms (Tacoma is coil sprung, you get the picture) and protection up front...
Maybe that's why the other makes cannot sell as much as Toyota can in class...
@ oxi - The Ford Ranger has been the top selling in small pickup truck for 17 years..
The #1 best selling full size pickup? Ford F150 (actually, it's still the best selling vehicle out of all vehicles.. period).
The #2 best selling full size pickup, Chevy Silverado. I like Toyota products, but where do you see Toyota selling more pickups than GM or Ford?
actually the following statement is FALSE. "The #1 best selling full size pickup? Ford F150 (actually, it's still the best selling vehicle out of all vehicles.. period). " If you were to look at the numbers, it says "F-Series", which includes ALL F150s, 250s, 350s,450s, and so on. If you were to compare just the F150 to the other brands, you would be suprised.
The Tacoma is the best selling truck in its segment.
Thanks Toyota, the Benefactor of Cash for Clunkers, in the state that sells more Toyota Hybrids than the rest of the country combined. I hope the rest of the USA realizes how short sight you are. I get that CA is not a very business friendly place at the moment, but talk about kicking someone when they are down and moving to Texas!!!! I will forever look at every single CA person driving a Toyota Tacoma and think what a bad decision they made to support Toyota, especially since your trucks are literally falling apart from rust..

I cant believe people actually buy those mega big pork chop huge Tacoma's .
actually the party responsible for Nummi shut down is GM they took all the bail out money from us the tax payer and then file for bankruptcy so they dont have to pay the money ,then the bailout of Nummi ,i dont blame toyota i blame GM they left toyota hanging ,in fact i hope GM bankrupt again i will never buy a gm car again as for toyota local goverment offer you millions in incentive to stay but you choosed to leave after you sale more toyota cars in california then any other state .
toyota don,t sh!!!!t where you eat my two cent

Toyota sucks.
"@ oxi - The Ford Ranger has been the top selling in small pickup truck for 17 years.."
Hmmm, the Tacoma outsells the big 3 combined in sales in its category!
Global sales, when it comes this segment, Toyota is king of the world. I do not see many Rangers around the world as Toyota pickups...
According to Edmunds, 41% of the cars purchased were Japanese (Honda, Toyota, Nissan). I believe the 95% foreign statement is substantially higher than reality.
I am United States born and love my country dearly, I also love my California assembled 2003 Toyota Tacoma that is as spotless and perfectly mechanically sound as the day it was built.. Thank you to all of the men and women who assembled this truck. Its still as new as day one.
Just a couple a questions....
If the Ranger is so great why have they decided to discontinue it due to poor sales growth/revenue?
How do you figure the taxpayers are paying for a company that gets a tax break? Are we paying their taxes? It's bringing jobs to those areas isn't it?
I'm also wondering how a foreign companies making cars in the US can make a longer lasting, quality product versus the
American auto makers, which are charging far more for a product that is made for cheaper in foreign countries and taking jobs out of the country.

This article shows that 70% of the parts in the Tacoma are sourced from the US. Additionally, the Tacoma is assembled in the US, whether Texas or California.
Compare that with the Chevy HHR I bought - 30% of parts from the US and built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.
To think I felt guilty about wanting a Toyota because it wasn't an American car.
Texas is a right to work state, so you do NOT have to be a UAW member to work at an auto plant, at least according to the rules. However, if you're not a member, you can expect "accidental" mishaps happening to your vehicle while it's parked in the plant parking lot.
Marauder, you do realize you're commenting on an 8-YEAR-OLD article, don't you?
@roadwhale
You do realize, of course, that you are replying to a commenter, who's responding to an article written in 2009?
