Pickup Makers Hope To Rope A Win At The Texas Truck Rodeo
By Sue Mead
Each October, the 40-plus members of the Texas Auto Writers Association gather the latest herd of full-size pickups, SUVs and crossovers to compete in the Texas Truck Rodeo, with one earning the title of "Truck of Texas." The trucks are tested on- and off-road for two days before the jury votes for its favorite rig.
“There’s nothing else like it,” say all the pickup truck makers who lined up their latest models at the Knibbe Ranch, in the hill country on the outskirts of San Antonio.
The 2009 event kicked off Friday, but after a day of 97-degree temperatures the competition got even hotter, when the manufacturers handed over the keys to a field of automotive writers and evaluators hailing from Texas and across the country.
Here’s what the automakers had to say:
-
“Texas is Ground Zero for trucks,” said Mark Fields, Ford's vice president of North American operations.
- “It’s huge and there’s nothing like it,” said Tim Gallagher, a Nissan spokesperson.
- “We’re here to show off our trucks to the TAWA members and compare ours to the competition,” said Craig Eppling, head of GM’s communications office in Texas.
- “A win would mean a lot to us,” said Frank Bianchi, communications manager for Gulf States Toyota.
- ”We’re here to win,” said Mike Cairns, vehicle line executive for Dodge Ram pickups.
This year, TAWA members drove 17 new vehicles head-to-head along a challenging dirt track, up and over rocky shelves and through water crossings and mud. After driving all of them, they voted for their favorite in each category.
Stay tuned. When the final votes are tallied, we’ll report back on the 2009 Truck of Texas, the 2009 Truck Line of Texas, the 2009 Outstanding Feature for new pickups and more.

If they're testing the Raptor, it will be unfair not including the Ram PowerWagon, otherwise this competing just hasn't sense in "Full-size pickup trucks" class - too different trucks!
Why would it be unfair when The Power Wagon is not even on sale yet? You might as well include the new Super Duty against the HD Ram if you want to go with that logic and potentionally lose the HD title as well. It doesn't matter, the Raptor would have won anyway. Just ask Mike Levine. He will tell you that the Raptor wins hands down against the Power Waggie.
pw and raptor cant really be compared...raptor is more baja styled while pw is for work and climbing and just that typa 4x4 haha idk how to describe it
People, I know about trucks and sure, the PowerWagon is the Wrangler Rubicon in pickup trucks, not a kind of Baja pre-runner but it's now the only reasonable competitor to the Raptor - with what they wanted tho compare the Raptor, with all the rest 4x4-trucks versions listed above? That was 101% sure, that this Ford truck would win! If there was the Ram 3500 HD (not in sales yet), so what was the problem with bringing the Power Wagon too? I don't mind against Raptor - is a great, tough truck, but in this case it just hasn't had any kind of serious competition, so all this on- & off-road test in this class was everything but not fair!
what your gone a do whit the raptor in the wood ..Wye ford put a different tr any for slow off road..ma be bring gm hummer h3t
It's not a good comparison because the Power Wagon is a Heavy Duty. The Raptor is a Full Size. You already won the heavy duty category. Stop whining.
the Raptor is specialty truck
it can't be competed against other truck that dont have same specialty
it like putting a cat in house of mice.
@dave: Yes, the Ram PW is a full size heavy duty, but that, what you can do with the Raptor beside the pavements routes could be easily called heavy duty too (see the Pickup Trucks Raptor test)!
After males are three years old they are no longer considered calves, afterwards they are known as novillos and are ready for bullfighting, although novilladas are for training bullfighters, or novilleros. The best bulls are kept for corridas de toros with full matadors.
