GM Starts Building New 2011 Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks
Posted by Mike Levine | May 24, 2010
New 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Heavy Duty pickup trucks started rolling down the line Monday at GM's truck assembly plant in Flint, Mich. The first regular cab and crew cab HD trucks could reach dealers as early as the end of this month.
Last week, GM announced increases to the trucks' towing and hauling ratings, saying the Silverado and Sierra now lead all HD segments in maximum conventional towing and payload.
You know what this means? The 2010 Heavy Duty Shootout is so on!

I hope the shootout gives us a better comparison about true capabilites vs bling.
Who care how fast it does in the 1/4 mile. It is all about handling and safely stopping.
That was a cool video. Never seen inside an assembly plant before. I wonder if they top up all the fluids yet. I started out 6 years ago changing oil at the local Chev dealership. Whenever they came in for the first oil change I would always have to top up the rear diff with nearly a litre of diff oil before it was at an acceptable level. I guess they figured they would save money given the oil is $30 a litre.
GM and Chevy Silverado's are the leaders and best! Segment leaders in payload capacity, towing capacity, and the duramax diesel with the most horsepower, 397 and 765 foot pounds of torque!
My favorite brands are Chevy, (GM) trucks, Ski-Doo snomobiles, Honda motor cycles. What's your favorite brand of vehicle?
Seems a little late. These should have been out when the new superduty came out.
Bob, I agree with you on the Bombardier products, maybe for an enduro/dirt bike I would go Yamaha. Ford trucks of course, though I don't hate the others.
I need to convince my wife that I need this truck!
@Butz, The new Superduty hasn't been out too long, atleast a month or maybe a little longer. Hell, most of the Ford dealers that I drive by on my way to work only have (for what I can see) is a minimum of two or three new SDs on their lot. Now if GM were to wait til later in the year to roll out the new HDs then I can see a reasoning for GM being late to the game.
ford and Harley davidson and tool a box..
Cool video I cant believe GM actually finished the video with a regular cab long bed 4x4 AKA a real truck .
Well all I got to say is I'll have to drive all three and see which one I like and who will make the best deal for me to buy.. So which ever I buy and someone tells me AW why you get that, I'll just simply tell them you didn't buy it, so HUSH UP!!! LOL... BOB you crack me up at times I think you're Jealous of the Ford Fans Bashin on GM..HaHA
Looks like a big improvement, I'm sure I will be impressed when I see one on the lot, but I won't buy an HD Silverado as it does not have side impact air bag protection. Shame on GM for sacrificing safety for bling. Ford and Ram HD's both include side protection.
@ Bob - all depends on the truck class or bike class for that matter.
Pickups
compact/mid - --Toyota Tacoma
1/2 ton --------- Ford F150
!/2 ton OffRoad- Raptor
HD diesel------- Dodge Ram
HD gas --------- Power Wagon
Motorcycles - all depends on whether its a cruiser, sport bike, standard,Adventure,SuperMotard, MX bike or offroad/woods bike.
No one can touch Harley for Cruisers.
European sport bikes, sport tourers are better than the Japanese bikes.
KTM makes the best offroad/woods machines.
I like Skidoo sleds or quads.
Nice vid, I love my 09 2500HD. Did anybody else notice @ 1:19 they are showing a 2010 truck not a 2011?
@Ron
Did you miss the fact that it's available with seat pelvic/thorax and head curtain side air bags?
the only thing good about this is the Allison transmission.
you can't break it. but the duramax? this engine is a joke.
yes, 90% of the duramax is still on the road. some where.
the other 10% made it home.
Catch me,
Buddy. you are lost!! Duramax is as good as Cummins, powerstroke on the otherhand is a complete joke, Superduty is the most unreliable within HD's, do some research.
Fred, I believe you need to wait awhile before saying Super Duties are a joke. Yes, the problems with the 6.0 and 6.4 engines did hurt the trucks, but Ford seems to have done their homework in developing the new 6.7 engine. On the other hand, I'd much rather have a Cummins than a Duramax. Yes, I'm biased, I'm a Ford owner. I would think the best powertrain option would be a Cummins engine and a Ford transmission since Dodge has problems in that area.
About time We here at Ford need something to compare how good our trucks are thanks Gm for making our product look even better! ;)
@ Fred:
No engine on the market is as good as the Cummins!!!
Ford has the best transmissions the Torqueshift 6 spd is a beast. Allison is over rated. IMO, just throwin my hat into the fight.
@Ron
Did you miss the fact that it's available with seat pelvic/thorax and head curtain side air bags?
Dm, I wish I did ? I found them only to be available in the 1500. The 2011 HD build sheet specifies only frontal DS/PS airbags ?
Bob,
GM is the leader on paper thanks to a lot of magic spring dust, but not for long.
Lou,
Who do you think has the best interior?
With the Harley, Platinum, King Ranch, Raptor, FX4, SYNC, I'd have to say Ford.
@Ron From the 2011 HD press release
The 2011 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models have a comprehensive roster of safety features and functional technologies that include:
* StabiliTrak electronic stability control system on all single-rear-wheel models
* Larger, four-wheel disc brakes with standard four-wheel ABS
* A new high-strength steel tubular frame cross member that enhances safety and improves crashworthiness
* Seat pelvic/thorax and head curtain side air bags available on 2500HD
* Available rear backup camera
* Segment-exclusive OnStar 9.0
* Trailer sway control system on all single-rear-wheel models
* Hill start assist (standard on single-rear-wheel models)
Good for GM. They need a hit. Now, they just need to correct the terrible body style on the Chevrolet and fix the doors so the edges are exposed and rust to pieces.
@Jon - I was just at a huge vehicle sale this past weekend. All of the dealerships in my town have a once a year sale at the local sports arena/fairground parking lot. Every brand was there. I sat in all of them and every trim level. The GM dealership did not have any Denali trucks (they rarely ever do).I had my kids along as well.
This is how I'd rate them:
High end trim - HD trucks
1. Ford King Ranch( I liked the seats slightly more than the Ram - It was otherwise a tie)
2. Dodge Ram Laramie
3. GMC/Chev SLT/LTZ (Denali not available)
Mid Trim
1. Ford - greatest number of choices (I didn't like the biege interiors)
2. Dodge Ram
3. GM/Chev
1/2 tons
High End
1. Ford Platinum with the Sienna brown leather interior.
2. Dodge Ram Laramie
3. Toyota Tundra Platinum
4. GM/Chev SLT/LTZ (Denali not available)
Mid level trim
1. Ford - most choices (don't like beige interior)
2. Ram
3. GM/Chev
4. Toyota
I didn't check have time to check out the Nissan Titan.
(My kids liked anything with a DVD player in it:)
@ Jon - I forgot about the Harlef F150. There wasn't one present, so I didn't have the chance to sit in one. It looks nicer than the Platinum with Sienna brown interior.
I'm pretty excited about the new GM HDs, but, even as a former 2500HD owner, I'd be happy with any of the three (GM, Ford, Ram).
Just seems to me that, for some people, truck brand preference is like religion. No amount of banter, facts, experience or anything else is going to change their minds.
Truth is, the new PowerStroke is an all new engine with no track record, good or bad. The Cummins has been on the market, as is, for a little more than a year and the Duramax splits the difference, being based on a proven engine, but with, I think, 60% new parts. At this point, it's a crap shoot as to which is "best" (if there could even be such a thing).
@mallthus- You seem to see what so many of these brand junkies are... I am a Ford guy, but for fun I went down and looked at a new cummins. That truck I fell in love with just as hard as I fell for the 2011 f350 at my local ford dealership. And the new gmc/chevy that will soon grace the local gm dealerships will be really hot too. I think that when I trade in my baby ranger on a heavy duty (anyone of the big trucks) I will be happy.
I would like to make a suggestion on a good area to do the comparison test. If you start off at West bank in B.C. Canada. Travel over to Merritt on the #97C then go on the #5 till you cross the river north of Kamloops. then turn around and go back, threw Kelowna to Hwy #33 to the 3 then to the Alberta boarder. It will give you a nice trip, great views, put the trucks to work, and give people a real world run, not some drive threw the park. One thing we do have in B.C. is mountains. Just a thought!
Lou,
That's good to hear. I like the information display on the new Ford better than the Ram. I also forgot about the Cabellas. I'm not into hunting so that's not my cup of tea but Ford seems to have all the bases covered on interiors. I also like the load flat floor on the half tons. Denali - I could not help but noticed how fast Mike Levine got in out of the Denlai in the video. He said it's got a heated wheel and black lacquer console. On the Ford videos such as the Harley and Platinum, he really goes into detail because there is so much to see. GM needs to turn it up a notch if they want to compete.
I have a 2008 model GMC3500 Srw Crew Cab on 17 inch wheels, great truck. 50,000K of work. If I have the money I would like to get a new 2012GMC. I personally do not want everyone to buy these trucks, there would be to much unemployment without Ford. I have worked HD all my life and the 5.9 Cummins with a P7100, was a great engine and I could have got a discount to buy a Dodge or a Sterling. I bought the GMC, Ford was never in the picture. To those that want a real test of a vehicle, you might want to mention the B.C. run. Have a real good day!
This is how I'd rate them:
High end trim - HD trucks
1. Ford King Ranch( I liked the seats slightly more than the Ram - It was otherwise a tie)
2. Dodge Ram Laramie
3. GMC/Chev SLT/LTZ (Denali not available)

1/2 tons
High End
1. Ford Platinum with the Sienna brown leather interior.
2. Dodge Ram Laramie
3. Toyota Tundra Platinum
4. GM/Chev SLT/LTZ (Denali not available)
Mid level trim
1. Ford - most choices (don't like beige interior)
2. Ram
3. GM/Chev

Lou, Ford is ranked first on all of them? Come on!
Notice how Lou ranks Ford first and GM with ONSTAR gets ranked last on every one.
You really make me mad. You own a Chevy van how about showing some loyalty for a change!!!!!!!!!
@bobby - it isn't about loyalty - it's about trucks.
I'm loyal to friends, not machines or corporations.
Jon asked me what I thought was the best interior.
I posted my opinion.
If I would of had the chance to check out a Denali, I might of rated them differently.
I really liked the Sierra 1500 SLT leather interior with the GFX package.
The problem for GM/Chev is that Ram and Ford have better interiors. (especially high end)
Maybe next year I'll rate them differently.
If I have a chance to check out a Denali I'll post a revised list for you.
OnStar - we've already danced around this one.
I read that Tec savvy people prefer Ford Sync but less Tec savvy people or older people prefer OnStar.
OnStar has the advantage of calling for help in a MVC, and can improve insurance rates (lower incidence of theft).
My cell phone can do most of what OnStar does. Same goes for my hand held GPS. A map and Silva compass works well too (especially if you run out of batteries).I can call someone to bring me keys if I lock my car keys inside. If I'm out in the middle of nowhere, a place that OnStar or cells don't work - a big rock works just fine ;)
Thanks for reposting my entire post. I appreciate the endorsement ;)
Building the biggest baddest truck ever!
Fully boxed frame
Duramax
Allison
Smallest tires made (and no room for even slightly larger ones)
@Lou,
You are just calling it as you see it. No bias nor loyalty. Great opinion.
malpp@aol.com
if you noticed, but those tires are for 2010 model, and you can clearly see that in the video, because of different bumper. they only showed 2011 chassis and a regular cab long bed in the end.
Lou
your cell phone can almost do everything as onstar?
Can your cell phone locate your vehicle?
can your cell phone automaticly call emergency while you are knocked out in a crash?
can your cell phone unlock your car?
I thought so....
BTW GM is working with google on the new technology.
Also your opinion SUCKS...
John
I've noticed that Mike Levine tends to favor Fords, so thats why he'll go in to details on those fords.
Thanks DM,
* Seat pelvic/thorax and head curtain side air bags available on 2500HD
I never looked at the 2500HD, I need a 3500 DRW and unfortunately GM excludes the side airbags in the 3500.
They should of at least made them optional, it's a show stopper for me.
Andrew,
Lou doesn't need Onstar to unlock his truck. If he is driving a F-150 all he has to do is punch in the 4 digit code and Lou is in. It takes 2.2 seconds.
You on the other hand need to have your cell phone AND Onstar, you need to remember the onstar telephone number, you need to call Onstar, you need to convince them that you are the owner, they will ask you a series of questions, then pray that you are within range of the Onstar working, stay on the phone with onstar until it opens and don't forget to pay your monthly fee or Onstar is disabled.
Which would you prefer? I would prefer simply using the door code myself.
PS Got any proof that Mike favors Fords? Or does he favor a good product when he sees one? If anyone had a quality truck like the Harley, Raptor or Platinum I bet he would spend more time on them, too.
RT @nsap: OnStar couldn't give me directions due to low data coverage...I was 3 blocks from Sprint World HQ. Irony.
http://twitter.com/pickuptrucks
Jon, is that the best thing you can come up with? there are alot more GM vehicles with onstar then Fords with those codes. If you didn't payed attention, we are comparing a cell phone vs Onstar, not Onstar vs f150. But then again you can't get those other features with f150 that you can get with GM and Onstar. plus Lou does not drive a f150.

your all noob, the 6.7 cummins by far is crap compared to the old one, allsion is overated, and the ford torqueshift owns it, ford will up there payload it wont take much, gm and dodge shoudl jsut both start packing.
I'm not sure about 2011 ford tranny, but earlier models can't touch The Legendary Allison.
@ Nick what makes the 6.7 Cummins so crappy. Its the same engine as the 5.9 just bigger bore and longer stroke. Plus a the same emmisions stuff that the other guys have.
I also like how all the furd guys keep gloating about the new trans, when there isn't one out there yet that has 20,000 miles on it. Give it 3 year before you even think about calling it relyable.
The old Ford develped Torqueshift wasn't all that great, I bet this one is going to follow that same path.
The best I can come up with? No. Try this....

Andrew ... with BlondeStar you have to pay a yearly subscription with some or all models (correct me here if not true)? This is in regards to getting into vehicle w/o keys. Ford has the option (standard on some models perhaps GM as well) to have keyless entry. Pay once when you buy. Now why would that be bad? Ford does have the SYNC option. I've read SYNC & Onstar are similar but not same. Depends on what you need. For me going somewhere and not wanting to carry my keys I like leaving them out of sight in my truck and using keyless entry to get in. I don't want to have to pay yearly or wait to make a call to be unlocked. Just use keypad and go.
I called it BlondeStar as there was a funny Youtube call on this about a blonde locking herself IN her GM and calling Onstar to get out.
@jordan l.
well technically there are a couple Fords out there with more than 20000 miles on them considering Ford tested over 10.3 million miles on their new SD before they even thought about releasing it. and the test were far more sever than anybody who knows anything about trucks, and diesels in particular, would ever even think of putting their truck through. i think competition is a good thing. it keeps the prices down for us consumer which makes me happy, but i do get tired of all the bashing on other brands. im a Ford guy sure but other brands have their ups. i think it all depends on if you get lucky when you get a truck. i had a cousin by a brand new cummins and it killed over on him around 100000 miles but he decided to give them another chance, exact same truck and everything, and it is currently sitting at 300000 and he hasnt had a single problem with it yet. so it all depends. some may argue that they see many more Fords sitting on the side of the road then any other brand but this is due to the fact that there are more Fords on the road than any other brand, and this is a proven study untainted by opinion. so there now everybody has my two cents even if they didnt want it lol.
