New Video for 2011 Chevrolet Silverado Shows Off Frame and Powertrain Improvements
Posted by Mike Levine | May 24, 2010
Last week, we looked at GMC's new promotional video clip for the 2011 Sierra Heavy Duty pickup. Some commenters questioned the value of showing an intricate basketball shot instead of the truck's towing and hauling capabilities. In response, we present the other side of the GM HD coin.
Here's Chevrolet's preview footage of the 2011 Silverado HD. The Bow Tie truck team virtually tears down the Silverado on the fly, so you can see how all of its bits and pieces give it best-in-segment power and class-leading work capabilities in most configurations.

i'll keep my spartan tuned 6.4 f250
Hmmmm..I think the "New" GM is starting to play catch up. It remains to be seen how durable this truck is. Many of the components of this truck are time tested which is a good thing. The frame looks pretty tough. ..maybe GM is finally getting it right?
Finally some real cool marketing.GM your finally getting it.A little late in the game but still in the game.Congrats.Keep the momentum would you.Don't be afraid to take cues from the other two.You have to admit they both have strong attributes.If you haven't figured it out I mean FORD and DODGE.
MItch
Now that is a good commercial GM!
Good marketing. Similar in practice to the old Chevy commercials where it was just the Chevy doing awesome stuff. This was the era of "like a rock".
BOSCOLICIOUS- You can keep your 6.4 and F250. This thing will literally rip it in half at any given moment.
Until GM puts a solid front axle in thier trucks, thats when they should be called HD's........who cares about a boxed frame.....i know the frames on dump trucks and 18 wheelers are a little thicker but they have been using c channel frames for years and they carry alot more weight, you dont hear big rig drivers complain about frames....i perfer a C channel fram
Great commerical!! Finally, GM does it right. Good job.
Im excited for the tests of the new GM HD's.
Also, "G-street" you clearly dont know much about the diesel performance world, because a Stock 6.4L with Spartan tuning can make 600hp and 1200lb-ft. This new Duramax wouldnt stand a chance.
Now, the new GM chasis vs. the old Ford one could be interesting. Still, both great trucks. Try and not be brand whores people...
That was a good commercial.
The "Transformers" disappearing bodywork is cool.
Yes GM is still in front of the HD market. Time to trade the old 2007 Duramax for the new 2011 Duramax. Love my 2010 Cummins RAM 3500, very good truck , but since the wife lets me have 2 trucks i will get the New DMAX for pulling my Travel trailer and use the RAM for work around the Farm and hauling the huge loads of crap.
Nice Video. Thanks Michael Bay
@G-street
what's the g stand for in ur name?
Government?
wouldn't surprise me if your some stupid obama czar snooping around!
Why in the hell does GM insist on making there trucks ride on the bump stops ? @ :47 seconds in the video for proof for crying out loud this is moronic .
@Garrett and BOSCOLICIOUS
You can easily make 600+ hp with an EFI Live tuned LB7 and get almost double the mpg, so lets compare apples to apples here. The LML vs Scorpion should be a great battle.
Does the fully boxed frame mean GM has gotten out of the commercial truck business? I have heard that if that frame is fully boxed on all sides you can't put different equipment on it. The Fords are fully boxed but have a HD C-channel up front so truck buyers can fit the bed with different equipment.
This is boring Gm is so lame !!! The super duty will take this truck hands down ! They say they have 397 hp its more like 100 ford hp lol Sat in a new 2010 2500 ram it had no leg room and it was down right nasty. Ford will always make the best trucks in the world .
I knew it was only a matter of time before the ford flamers would arrive to attack this video. Ford makes a good truck but their fans absolutely SUCK! they cannot resist to attack and bash GM. some girly men ford fans bash GM no matter what they come out with. They can't help themselves mind you. They have self esteem issues and they can't stand the thought of any truck being better than their fix or repair daily ford trucks.
So for you ford lovers who have to continually bash GM, this is showing your petty jealousy of GM.
So let it be written, so let it be done.
I will say, even though I am a Ford guy, that is a pretty neat commercial!
@David - You hit the nail on the head. All large dump trucks and 18 wheelers (or any combination of the two) use open channel C frame. Fully boxed frames don't mean nothing for towing or hauling heavy loads. The only area where it would be helpful to have a fully boxed frame is for going off road. Fully boxed frames are stiffer and prevent the bed from shaking to much, esp when going over bumps and rocks.
@Sean - The open C channel is on the rear not the front on a Ford.
@Bob - Not trying to get on your bad side because I think Ford, Dodge, and GM all make great trucks but I do recall you getting on some Ford post and "Flaming" on their post. Each truck has its strengths and weaknesses. Each truck is more than capable of pulling and doing any amount of work you can think of. But I do agree with you that it is getting pretty bad that most people come on here just to say dumb stuff that they need not say. So let it be written, so let it be done.
great commercial, this is the easily the best Heavy Duty truck GM has ever built... The LML should be a beast based off its numbers and that new frame looks real legit..
well done GM, im excepting good things out of these improved HD's.
Boy that far excedes anything ford has on its heavy duty's. Looks like ford truck will keep their second place standing for several more years.
Some of the ford girls comments have proved what I've told friends about ford pick up truck drivers for years....they know absolutely nothing about pick up trucks.
I'm a Ram fan. I stand up for Rams. I love Rams.
But, still nice truck gm......397!.....397!!!..........
Sorry what?? did you say 44 years of best selling line of trucks???? Oh wait nope ur not FORD!!!!
I heard Ford wanted to do the same exact commerical but couldn't get enought air time. I guess it takes a LOT MORE time peeling back the the layers of a FORD SUPER DUTY since there is something beneath the sheetmetal... Maybe if Chevy actually had under fender structure they wouldn't have to hand the windshield washer fluid bottle off the inner fender wall. The funny thing is that if you take the fenders off that is exactly what you see as in the commerical (NOTHING BUT MOTOR AND FRAME!) ahahahahah
MIKE LEVINE:
That was a good commerical, you are a little late posting it. Saw it about 4-5 days ago... thanks for the update though.
PS: CHEVY SUCKS
PS: I'm glad GM put the tax payer's money to good use... oh and if you believe that GM "paid" back the government think again... look into "NEW GM" and "OLD GM" new gm did pay back their portion but the BULK still isn't paid back by old gm - double digit billions...
GO GOVERNMENT MOTORS!
This was a great commercial if you like magic spring dust.
@John,
I think the magic spring dust has gone up their noses.
Not a GM guy, but great commercial.
The competition is great for all truck guys. They all keep getting better!
Good commercial. Lot better than the gay "Dude" commecials that were posted the other day.
Frank,
I hear Mike is working on another magic spring dust story. My guess is Ford is getting ready to trounce GM.
False alarm. GM will keep its best-in-segment magic spring dust.
@John: There's a confirmed typo on Ford's consumer website for the 2011 F-350. It says 21,800# max 5th wheel towing -- 100# more than Silverado. I spoke with Ford. They are going to reset to 21,600#. Silverado holds steady at 21,700#. Drama!
This number on papers stuff is funny. I can't wait for a shootout.
Motor Trend (Sorry Mike L.) did a test between the Mustang 5.0 rated at 411 hp and Camaro SS at 426Hp. The Mustang beat the Camaro despite having lower hp numbers. So let's wait for real world testing.
gm have the best diesel for years,now they have a good body,ford never have a good diesel,,,ford have to catchup,gm and dodge....this is what you forget.
Rubbish, the 7.3 pissed all over the GM 6.5 and the 12V Cummins, and the 6.0's reliability issues have been completely blown out of proportion. The early Duramax and 6.0 PowerStroke were both good engines. It's the whole mentality that you can only like one product and you have to hate the others... just bugs me. Dodge still doesn't make a diesel, it outsources still, just like GM outsources the transmission. I like the fact Ford is making everything in-house now, and the technology from Jag/LR diesels went in to developing the 6.7.
Actually, it's important to note that Ford didn't make any of the previous PowerStroke diesels, but did make the Jag/LR 2.7, 3.0 and 3.6L diesels - all with CGI blocks.
@ Frank Racing is about power to weight ratio (and traction). The mustang is quite a bit lighter than the Camaro. The Super Duty is quite a bit heavier than the GM, combine that with the lower torque and the Gm will more than likely beat the Super Duty in a drag race. GM is pretty petty these days. Speaking of Mustangs and Camaros: when the 3.7 V6 was introduced in the Mustang it made more power than the Camaro V6. GM upped the HP in that V6 so it now has more power than the mustang by a few. The funny part is that they claim that the engine already made the HP but they just rated it conservatively. If it can work for the Camaro it can work for the HD`s apparently.
Great post Alex. GM is finally starting to catch up to Ford in the HD segment. But Ford has once again raised the bar with the new 6.7L diesel and 6-speed auto tranny.
Alex-
The 6.0 Powerstroke was a disaster and was not blown out of proportion...
straight from Wikipedia
"Many 6.0 L Power Stroke engines were proven to be unreliable,[1] and may have cost Ford hundreds of millions of dollars in warranty repairs and leading to a recall and repurchase of at least 500 trucks"
you see GM or Dodge repurchasing 500 trucks? Ford may have the blinders over your eyes, but some of us know the truth...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Power_Stroke_engine
@jake that article on wikipedia "may require cleanup to meet wikipedia quality standards." Very nice source.
Whoever resorts to Wikipedia is a dolt.
You guys all need to grow up and get over your brandism. You drive what you like, and what you need it for. Truck manufactures compete and continually upgrade and better themselves, which is good for us (the consumer) or gives others posting here, that don't own trucks...something to talk about.
Very interesting commercial btw
@David
So IFS isn't as strong... But these trucks ride nicer on and off road than any other truck due to the IFS system.
@Jordan
You are a little misinformed. But I'm not gonna go too far off topic, only tell u to look up hp specs for 2008 Cadillac CTS (they did it first w/ 306hp)
@ Rob I`m not sure what your getting at. Here is the article.
http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car/10q2/2011_chevrolet_camaro_v6_gets_fake_power_bump-car_news
Camaro was 304hp Mustang got 305hp now Camaro has 312 (but it always had 312, no one needed to know this untill the mustang had more, but now the mustang doesn`t so GM is still better). You can interpret this any way you want, I think its petty.
YOURE AN IDIOT EVEN IF THE CRAMARO V6 HAS 312HP AND THE MUSTANG HAS 305HP THE MUSTANG IS LIGGHTER THE CAMARO DOES 5.7 0-60 WITH THE 312HP AND THE V6 MUSTANG WITH 305HP DOES 5.1 TITIRI GET YOURE INFO STRAIGHT !! MUSTANG WINS OOO AND ITS EMBARRISING THE THAT A 5.0 BEATS A 6.2 LITER BIGGER MOTOR LMAO MUSTANG IS THE CLEAR WINNER GT AND V6
AND ABOUT GENERAL MISTAKE GM CAN U SAY 33 YEARS BEST SELLING TRUCK IN A MERICA FACE IT FORD IS A WORK HORSE CHEVY IS WEAK TRANNY AND REAR ENDS POS THE 6.7 IS GONA KILL A NEW ASS ON IT LMAO
Excellent commercial, some of you know jack when it comes to frames, a box frame is your strongest frame available, on large trucks u can order heavier c-channel frames depending on your app. and for the heavy duty large truck will double up the c-channel behind the front axle to the rear of the truck and they keep it to c-channel just for configuration mounting and add ons
LOL @ Jake for citing Wikipedia.
@ Lariat07,99 Are you calling me an idiot? Its hard to read your posts with your lack of punctuation. If you reread my last two posts you would see that I`m not bashing Ford. Just trying to point out that the new Gm will do whatever it takes to be best in class. Even if it means BSing their customers. Some body one ups Gm and they go back and ``reevaluate`` their product. Then as if by magic (spring dust and HP dust) they determine that they under estimated the vehicle. It appears to me now that GM really doesn`t seam to know what its vehicles are capable of. And they don`t seam to care, they just juggle numbers untill they have the best.
Well, since someone wanted to quote wiki as a "source" I figured I would quote urban dictionary as a source...its about as reliable ya know
Ford F250 Super Duty
"The toughest and most reliable truck ever built. Nicest lookin too. Large front bench seat works real well. ;) This truck can pull any other truck sideways."
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ford+f250+super+duty
o_O lol
Good, good ad - no matter the brand. We design and build awesome trucks. Yeah, shoot out will be good.
