Mandatory Seat Belt Use in Pickup Trucks Becomes Law in Georgia
Georgia governor Sonny Perdue has finally signed into law a bill that will require drivers and front passengers in pickup trucks to buckle up as of July 1.
Until now, Georgia only required people in the front seats of cars, vans and SUVs to buckle up. A hold-up applying the same law in pickups came from Georgia's rural legislators, who argued that wearing a seat belt was an inconvenience for farmers and farm workers who frequently hop in and out of their pickups as they tend the fields. They also said there was too little traffic on Georgia's backcountry farm roads to worry about the risk of colliding with another vehicle.
The new law redefines “passenger vehicle” to include pickup trucks.
Perdue said the new law will save about 21 lives, 300 injuries and some 30-million dollars in hospital costs a year.
New Hampshire remains the last state in the U.S. without any seat belt requirement for adults in any vehicle.

Just another way of our WONDERFUL government telling us what we can and cannot do!
Well not so much telling us what we can and cannot do, but they are just trying to save the state some money. - "30-million dollars in hospital costs a year."
Where as many states are raising taxes and cutting jobs, putting a law in place to wear seat-belts that will in turn not only save life's but some 30 million dollars seems to me to be VERY reasonable.
you know technically, if you car didnt come equipped with seat belts then you ain't required to wear them. you can't wear what you dont have lol. i didnt have any seat belts in my '65 mustang and i only had seat belts for the front not the back in my '62 galaxie. they were my first 2 daily driver classics, but certainly wont be my last! :)
im only 21, and i feel blessed to drive cars that are 50 years old. cars that my parent's parents were driving lol!
@D Gentry -
Why don't we just eliminate all personal protective equipment, and abolish all safety rules or requirements?
Freedom of choice!
It costs much less to put a corpse in the ground!
My last post was harsh, with no disrespect meant to those whom have lost family or friends in a MVC.
I recalled this post from a similar story that was on this site:

As a mother who has lost a child in an auto accident, I am so thankful to have this bill pass. He was thrown out of the back glass of his truck. I would tell him each time he would leave the house "Don't forget your seatbelt!" and his response would be "You aren't required to wear a belt in a truck!" At the age of 20, YES he should have known better, but I believe if it had been required by law, he would have been more likely to buckle up, which he did do in his car. Would he have survived the impact? We will never know.
Thank you!

@Tawn - my condolences. Thanks for sharing. It's easy for people to overlook the pain behind the headlines.

We forget that it can happen to us. I don't play Russian Roulette - not wearing PPE is no different.
Seat belts should be worn at all times. I would feel skeptical to ride in a car/truck that does not require seat belts. Heck, I still think they should provide seat belts for public transportation, i.e. Trains & buses.
WTH!
Did you know there is NOT a motorcycle HELMET LAW in GEORGIA? It is referred to as "protective headgear" and that the GA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is authorized to publish a list of approved headgear. As of 6/01/2010 they have failed to publish said list. ABATE of Georgia provides any person who is ticketed for no helmet the information to present to the judge. If the judge still fines you guilty ask him if he is making the law or enforcing the law. Ask the same of the cop that writes you the ticket. Ask him to show you in his pocket motor vehicle law book where it says you must wear upon your head, a smooth plastic shock absorbing cover held in place by a strap around your neck. He can not provide such language, so any person could, in effect, wear a bandanna, a baseball cap or a bucket if he/she so desires. Now, it would be STUPID not to wear a helmet, but the law is the law.
Does anybody remember the automatic retracting seatbelts cars used to have? I had em in my 1990 Ford Escort.
If people are so adverse to wearing their seatbelts, then why is there always a big to-do about crash ratings? They mean nothing without that seatbelt.
If we got wear seat belts in trucks then lets pass the law about texting or talking on a cell phone Period. I ride a motorcycle too. I know first hand what cell phones can do when you get hit from behind at a 4 way stop sign by a driver talking on her phone. And why don't school buses have seatbelts????
@Boyd Stevens - many jurisdictions are banning cell phone use.
I've wondered the same thing about school buses or any bus for that matter.
The problem is(are)- who would be responsible for ensuring seatbelts are worn in a bus?
How does the bus driver verify compliance?
How is non-compliance dealt with?
Statistically - buses rarely get involved in serious MVC's.
They, therefore chose to "play the odds".
More Reason to say Good Riddance to Sonny. Fat Ass could have vetoed it, He can't run again.
Why is the government paying hospital bills? Another instance of people avoiding personal responsibility it seems. Maybe he signed it because all the pick-up trick drivers in Georgia were outside the Capitol chanting " we need a law to make us wear our seatbelts!" I was a supporter of Sonny, to bad he went out on a low note, maybe I'll vote for Barnes this year! STOP MAKING LAWS!!!!! Don't you people have anything more pressing to address?????
This is only another way of generating Money. Now we need more COPS to hand out moreTickets and generate revenue.
30 MILLION SAVINGS ? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE WHEN STATE LAW REQUIRES ALL AUTO OWNERS TO CARRY INSURANCE LIABILITY AND UNINSURED MOTORIST THE ONLY THIS COULD HAPPEN IS FOR { ALL ] ALL ACCIDENTS TO BE ILLEGAL IMIGRANTS SINCE MOST DONT HAVE INSURANCE OR SO I HAVE EXPERIANCED NO ONE THAT HAS HIT MY TRUCK HAD INSURANCE AND ONLY ONE HAD A LICENCE 30 MILLION SAVINGS I THINK NOT
What about the law , I see many of them not wearing seat belts... They speed up and down the road running tags.. this is not an emergency running tags, you guys are speeding wasting gas and money that the people are paying for .. remember ! I think us citizens should start tapeing you guys and stopping you all for seat belt violations, and for non emergency speeding !!! just because you wear a badge does not put you above the law .. you should be setting an example !!!
