Next-Gen Ford Ranger Spied One More Time

Our friends at Automobile Magazine have spied the next-generation Ford Ranger still undergoing testing in heavy camouflage. Even the wheels are covered up.

The future Ranger — code named T6 — will be built on a single, globally shared platform that's being designed in Australia. It's expected to be sold only in Southeast Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe and South America.

It can't be easy living in Detroit, seeing Ranger test trucks frequently driven and knowing that (at least for now) there are no plans to sell it here after production of the U.S. Ranger ends in 2011.

Darn those Ford bean counters. Sigh.

Ford is counting on the EB engined F150 to be "everyman's" truck.
Time will tell.
If things don't work out as planned we'll see the "global" Ranger.

The financial numbers must be overwhelming against the Ranger being sold here, because it seems like abandoning the compact truck market is a huge mistake. Meeting CAFE standards alone would almost justify selling a small pickup, not to mention current sales numbers for the Ranger that clearly show a market for these trucks does exist. Alan Mulally has made few mistakes at the helm so far, but this seems to be a big one.

Global Ranger with Ecoboost sounds nice.

NA NA NA you cant have one !!!!
Ford is full of a bunch of boneheads I cant believe they are ceding this market to Toyota .

one more reason to give Ford the finger.

Why cant someone park a current Ford Ranger beside one of these mules and then get a pic ? it doesnt look bigger than the current US Ranger .

Said it before, I'll say it again: It's a REALLY BIG MISTAKE to kill the Ranger in the U.S. and not replace it with this new Ranger. Not everyone wants a huge F150. HUGE MISTAKE.

Ford, do the right thing and give Americans a new Ranger.
Thanks.

If Ford could import this truck from wherever they are building it, we would certainly get our own version. As it stands, the projected volume for this truck just wouldn't be high enough to justify tooling an entire assembly line for it.

I'm a Ford man but by gosh if they're not going to provide me with what I want, I'll go elsewhere. I want a truck the size of the Ranger. I DO NOT want a F100 that's just a stripped down F150. Come on MR FORD, wakeup!

Ford is smart for killing the Ranger because it would be next to impossible to make a profitable case for it.

But unless they do something really special, like offering terrain response system for the upcoming lower-priced-than-Explorer Escape or bring back the Bronco, I'm going to show my dissapproval by buying from a Ford competitor.

I don't really understand what Ford and the other automakers want me to buy. I live on a dirt road, I don't want to drive a sedan down that. (Right now I end up driving a car down the road because it's all I have, but listening to rocks hitting the oil pan on a daily basis is not reassuring.) I could use a work vehicle with AWD to handle very light lumber loads. But I don't need a truck the size of an F-150, and I'm not willing to deal with the F-150's enormous size no matter how cheap or fuel-efficient it is.

I'm pretty sure I was the only person at the New Mexico Auto Show to like the Ranger Sport on display more than the F-150 Raptor. Raptor was so big and heavy, full of leather and expensive materials. I liked the simplicity of the Ranger. It felt friendly and comfortably right-sized. Somebody went up to me and said, "so how about that indoor-outdoor crap on the Ranger?" I said I liked it, because it was simple and basic. He says, "too simple."

I guess I'll end up going after the Fiat Strada truck they're going to rebadge as a Dodge?

@Taylor
Here is the current Global Ranger alongside a Dodge Ram, it the new Global Ranger will be bigger than the current model.

Ford you morons! I want a compact pickup with eco-boost. I guess I better move to another country then.

@Robert Ryan - the global Ranger looks as big as a North American Tacoma.

I don't get it, Ford would rather spend money on producing small cars, but they can't do anything to satisfy the needs of those that need a small pickup by having a new Ranger to replace the current aging Ranger. Big mistake on Ford's part!!

Well, atleast at this time, GM seems to see that there's still a market for small trucks even if sales of the Colorado/Canyon do suck.

@Robert Ryan:

I've seen you show that same picture twice now, and you're still making a huge mistake in your reasoning, showing photos and then saying "See? It looks big therefore it is big."

Even then, the Ranger still looks substantially smaller than the Ram in that pic, even though it is closer to the camera perspective-wise. Just looking at the vehicle's roofline alone the Ranger looks almost half a foot shorter in profile than the Ram. It looks the same size only because the Ranger pictured has a much taller camper shell than the Ram does.

This corresponds closely with AU Ranger specs. AU Ranger is approximately 70 inches wide, 69 inches tall. Dodge Ram 1500 is 79 inches wide, 75 inches tall.

Unless the new Euro Ranger somehow gets nine inches bigger and six inches taller for 2011, it will still be substantially smaller than the full-sizers. People will still say it is too big, but Americans said Colorado was too big and it's actually smaller in every dimension than the current American Ranger, so I don't really care what American truck guys have to say about it.

I'm looking at that pic, and comparing it to a photo of the American Ranger driving right next to an F-150.

To me, the American Ranger versus an older F-150 are about as close in size as that Ram looks to the Euro Ranger.

This is just my opinion. Feel free to disagree, but I reserve the right to say if Ford US won't give us a Ranger, then Ford Australia doesn't deserve to have its AU market Falcon either because y'know, mate, the new Focus, Fiesta and fuel-efficient Territory will effectively replace it in the Australian market.

The AU Ranger would be a tad smaller than the NA Tacoma.
Taco 4x2 = 72.2w 65.7 t
Taco 4x4 = 74.6w 70.1 t
AU Ranger = 70w 69 t

You really need to ask yourself, what the hell was Mulally thinking when he killed the Ranger? If they updated the damn thing like most auto manufacturers do, on a regular basis, then it would probably be the top selling compact truck right now. Instead their killing it and it defies logic.

I had a full size truck, I down sized in 1988 and do not want or need another big truck. All I need is something about the Ranger/Colorado size in a 4x4 4-door with 5-5.5 foot bed that can pull 3-4,000 pounds. It can be a eco-4 or v6, get great gas mileage 24 or higher and I do not care if it gets bad gas mileage while pulling my boat of hunting trailer, as most of my driving is empty.

@Johnny

"Ford, do the right thing and give Americans a new Ranger.
Thanks."

They are, to South Americans which is not Alabama...

Dammit, more Toyota's on the roads, that is not what I would like to see. I favor competition and will be sad to see the Ranger go...

oxi - brings all new meaning to the deep South. LOL

@Lou and @Ligilian. Ford is making the Global Ranger the same size as the current Hilux(as you have commented it is slightly smaller than the Tacoma/Hilux). The other thing they want to do is make it more "car like", as well as already having more towing capacity than the diesel Hilux. The new Ranger will get the 3.2 diesel from the Ford Transit plus a range of body styles.
The Hilux is probably the weakest in the towing department of all the Asian sourced pickups. Still it sells like hot cakes globally though and is the benchmark the other manufacturers are aiming for.

keep in mind, once those buyers switch from the Ranger to the Tacoma, Ford will have an uphill battle trying to get them back. I currently own a 2004 Sport Trac 4x4 w/ 85k. I don't exactly need a new truck right now, but if a new Ranger was availble, I would likely upgrade. I've always owned Fords, but based upon my wifes previous Lexus and current Toyota, I may look at a Tacoma next.

Btw, I had a 2004 F150 FX4 s'crew, great truck, more than I need 95% of the time, and terrible gas mileage. I large compact or small midsize truck is all I need.

One last point, Ford says they could not be profitable at the Rangers volume... OK look at the other vehicles in their showrooms that don't sell as well. Platform engineering, I guess. And they're dilusional if they think a small car can replace the Ranger for most people (BS). I put things in my truck bed b/c I don't want them in the cab... gasoline, mulch, etc.

@oxi
Thought my comment was pretty lucid and brief – key words were; “Ford, right, thing, Americans, Ranger”.
Thanks.

@johnny - oxi was trying to be funny.

@Lou- Me too. It's Ford that we're really laughing at.

@johnny - nice to see everyone having a good time.

One thing is for sure, it will be introduced not before the next Chevolet Colorado.

So we have to settle for a big gas-guzzling F150 instead of Ranger to commute?! What next, a little girl settling for Growing Up Barbie instead of Growing Up Skipper?!

YOU SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE?! RECONSIDER, FORD, RECONSIDER!!! FIRE MULALLY AND EXILE HIM TO THAILAND!!

I can see why soon-to-be former Ford owners like the Tacoma...They have those cool stock LED tailights. From the artist rendering, this Ranger Crew looks like a Sport Trac, but with lower-cut sides on the bed and longer.

This is what FORD stands for in the US: F**k Off, Ranger is Dead

Helloooooo! Is anyone awake at Ford?

Produce one of these darn Rangers here in the US for us to drive!
Not everybody wants a lighter duty F series. Besides, many people don't need a truck to haul above 4000 lbs so why force us to buy full-sized or foreign trucks when we don't want them. If they don't build a Ranger here after 2011, they will lose a customer who has had 5 Ford trucks, and 2 Ford cars.

@Fear
The Global Ranger is going to be built in Thailand and South Africa. Not in the US.

@Fear

If you absolutely must have a Ranger, petition the U.S. government to repeal the chicken tax.

Then Ford will sell the Ranger here.

Also, for good measure bring NHTSA in line with Euro NCAP.

IMHO the issue with a new Ranger is exactly what someone previously mentioned. It would share no current platform. That equals added expense of tooling and parts for a singlr semi small market vehicle. Withthe arrival of the new Explorer Ford has no small/mid sized body on frame, solid axle vehicles in their line up to share with. This chassis would also need to be compatable with the new V6's and Ecoboost 4 cylinder, not to mention need new transmissions that might very well be one offs for a small pick up as well.

Unless the chicken tax is dropped, we are mo re likely to see a Flex based unibody Ranger in the future is we see anything IMHO.

Well the "Ute" prototype version of the T6 Ranger has been seen testing in Australia.
http://www.caradvice.com.au/70807/2012-ford-ranger-t6-cab-chassis-spy-photos/

Ford could have planned a little better by using this new platform for the next gen Explorer, like they did in the beginning. There could again been a 2 & 4 door version, or they could have worked out something between the Ranger and Explorer to either had a crew cab version Ranger or SportTrac. They could have had short or long bed versions......
They seem to manage to have an almost infinite combination of cab versions and bed lengths, trim packages, and options packages for the F series, but what about what they could have done with a small pickup? They seem to be much more focused on packages and the marketing for the Fiesta than for the Ranger.
The Ranger and it's platform could have been a huge success for Ford if they used and marketed it wisely. I think they totally dropped the ball and GM maybe starting to see an opportunity opening up for them with the Rangers demise.

They must be waiting to announce the redesigned Ranger untill after 2011 year end sales. Otherwise who would buy next years model when a new one is coming. That has to be it... They can't possibly be that stupid. Gas prices are up, the country is going green and becoming economically responsible finally and Ford is going to only offer the heavy duty pickups?? Ha
