2010 SEMA Preview: The Custom Shop's 2011 Ford F-150 FX2 EcoBoost V-6
To push the limits of fuel efficiency and looks of a 2011 F-150 FX2 with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, Ford has teamed up with the overhauling and paint pros at the Custom Shop in Flanagan, Ill.
"Everything is going green," Custom Shop co-owner John Wargo said. "We’re doing as much as we can to improve the fuel economy of this EcoBoost F-150."
Planned modifications include shaving the truck’s door handles, adding a lightweight ARE tonneau cover, lightweight COR rims wearing Continental low-rolling-resistance tires, a Corsa free flow cat-back exhaust system, a larger cold air intake system and Amsoil synthetic motor oil for the twin-turbo, direct injection gas engine that makes 365 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque.
The Custom Shop isn’t stopping there. It’s also adding solar panels to help charge the F-150’s accessories and installing carbon fiber and aluminum panels under the body to help improve airflow beneath the truck. Ride height will be lowered using a Firestone air ride load-leveling system, to further reduce aerodynamic drag.
Topping it all off is a custom Pearl Black, white, silver and copper paint job with a dual pinstripe border applied to the F-150’s skin using DuPont’s low-volatile organic compound base and clear-coat paint for reduced emissions.
Inside, the paint job will be matched with a similarly colored leather interior by Katzkin seat covers, a custom Sony sound system and LCD screens throughout the cabin.
"We want as little wind drag as possible,” Wargo said, “but we still want this to be a sharp-looking street truck."
We’ll look for the finished truck at SEMA.

@ Mike Levine:
Mike, the 2011 F150 has electronic power steering, right? Isn't this supposed to help with fuel mileage?
To follow that question, have you heard anything regarding electric AC compressors? Thx!
Real trucks don't have AC.
I can't wait to see the final truck.
@GoChevy:
You must work for the UPS, FedEX or the USPS. :)
I will have the build up posted on my website soon if you want to see the build up check it out. www.customshop.org
see you all at Sema!

OMG...more brainwashed drones !!!!!!!!
Pretty soon this blog will be ...bicycles.com and they will test who can ride a bike faster pulling a trailer, this is what the left wants !!! Complete brain dead drones !! They make up their own science ,lie to people and easily fooled dolts believe them !!! Drones galore !!! I am so sick of this so-called green junk !! As per the Ford eco boost engine, whats so eco about it...takes as much fuel as a V-8,my Hemi should be called eco friendly then, but I am glad Mopar doesnt slap a lame eco name on its rides !!
Hemi Rules.. it's because soon noone is going to be able to afford to drive a Hemi V8. I guarantee people, (myself included) would prefer to drive a large displacement V8. But mired in a recession gas for example where I am in Canada is $1.06/litre or roughly $3.40/gallon.
It's only going up from here. I can't afford to put $100-$150 a week of gas in my truck. So they only way I can own one going forward is if fuel economy gets better.
Solar panels on a pickup truck!!! Goodness gracious, what is the world coming to? That is like painting teddy bears and daisies on the side of a B52 bomber... it's just ridiculous!
Thank you Toyota!
Toyota has led the way in developing green technologies.
lol @ O...Oxi? Thanks Toyota for everything, even if you have nothing to do with it. Thanks for the Prius, which is more environmentally damaging than a BMW M3 and a Hummer.

going "green" and they put leather seatcovers in it? lol. i guess even the greenies can appreciate some good-quality dead cows coddling their rear ends. And all the electronic "drag" created by the LCDs, etc can't help things (yes i know they won't run all the time but they aren't weightless either). For max MPG I would expect a stripper interior (tastefully done, think minimalism) to further boost the enhancements made by the exterior mods.
Trucks have a lot of real estate on things like the t.cover so the solar makes some sense, as long as the weight added doesn't make it a moot point.

Bob Saget:
Question is, have they REALLY got serious about fuel economy? As another post pointed out, the ecoboost is really not that much better on fuel than a V-8. yay, it has a bit more power with a couple MPG's, but look at the complexity of it.
The trucks have grown in size (tack damn near 1K pounds to a new truck vs one 20 yrs ago), and they have done just about every thing possible to a gasoline engine in the EB motor. Next will have to be lightening the truck up, smaller displacement, ever more gears in the transmission (chrysler 8 speed, wonder what a rebuild on that will cost), At one point if fuel economy is concerned, people are going to haved to quit being so damn concerned that their trucks can tow what a 3/4 ton truck will and win a drag race and get serious about FE. I agree, it has no where to go up up.
