Arizona Bill Would Prohibit Kids Riding Freely in Pickup Beds

By Dave Lee

Perhaps you can file this item under "safety first" or even "common sense." Last week, Arizona's House lawmakers approved a bill that would make it illegal to freely haul children in the beds of pickup trucks, and there's a chance the measure will become law, according to an editorial in the Arizona Daily Star.

Opponents of the bill have contended that the measure intrudes on civil liberties. But even under Arizona law, an elk carcass must be tied down in the back of a pickup to prevent it from becoming airborne in the event of sudden braking or a collision. Yet the state doesn't require that a child be secured when riding in the truck bed.

"A projectile 12-year-old poses just as much of a traffic safety risk as a projectile elk — not to mention that it's your kid," said Democratic Rep. Matt Heinz, the bill's sponsor.

The bill, which requires that pickup-bed passengers younger than 18 either be belted or helmeted, has partial bipartisan support in the Senate, Heinz said.

I could see this being against the law on the highway but maybe we should let the parents actually decide. You already took away spanking, so I could see why you would take away more parenting rights. If something does happen, then maybe tter parent should be charged with manslaughter. I personally would never let my kids or dog for that matter, in the back but that is my parenting choice. This law makes as much sense as the "caution, coffee is hot" on the cups at McDonalds. Well duh but there are alot of ignorant people in this world that obviously need direction. Hey, while we are making new laws, how about seatbelts in school buses. Children should always be strapped down because they are our most precious and fragile cargo that can not be replaced.

I agree with this Law as my Ex~husband lets our 8 yr.old son ride in the bed of his truck. I can't have anymore Children, so if I lost my son it would be so.....wrong. As far as Prades that is different as they are not going fast

A righteous move. From the start, it is irresponsible to let children ride in truck beds. I support this law.

One has to be ever vigilant and well prepared for a Auto accident, and the untold trauma suffered during an incident. The best way in which a person involved in a car accident can recover the huge financial and emotional damages caused is to purchase St.Petersburg Florida Auto insurance coverage.

As a parent, I would not have an issue w/ my kids driving short distances down a primarily desert road for fun or if necessary. However, I personally know parents who have taken their 8 yr old on a major highway in the bed of a truck. So yes, unfortunately, there are some stupid parents out there and this law is necessary to protect the innocent children. Common sense is not so common any more!
