The Ram 5500 Medium-Duty Pickup Truck We Wish Was on Active Duty

Chrysler's Ram division doesn't make a medium-duty pickup truck but if it did it would probably look just like this custom Ram 5500 chassis cab that was on display at the NTEA Work Truck Show.

The Ram 5500 pickup features a modified dual-rear-wheel cargo box bolted to its frame because all chassis cab trucks, regardless of make, have frame rails that are spaced exactly 34-inches apart. That’s a narrower gap than you'll find on a typical pickup. The Dodge Ram 1500, for example, has 38-inch spacing.

The cargo box has also been lengthened because the distance from the back of the cab to the rear axle is longer than you'll find on a standard Ram Heavy-Duty pickup.

Under its hood is a chassis-rated 305 horsepower, 610 pounds-feet of torque 6.7-liter Cummins I-6 diesel engine. We didn't have a chance to look inside to see if it had the six-speed G56 manual transmission or six-speed Aisin AS68RC automatic.

Want a 10-lug Ram 5500 pickup for yourself? We do too.

This Ram 5500 would make one heck of a toy hauler! Perhaps a little overkill? Nah!

I think you made a mistake mike

Do you mean ALLISON AS68RC automatic?

after a little researching, i guess not...

No, it is an Aisian automatic. Aisian is sort of a Japanese Allison.

Build it and they will come!

cool truck.

I think a truck box version would be more appropriate on the 4500. 5500 is pretty damn stiff ride. As for the Aisin tranny. Its pretty beefy. 380 lbs dry. Aisin is owned by Toyota and is used in many heavy duty applications. Hinos, Mitsubishis. I was at a Chrysler course recently for this tranny. Interesting thing is Chrysler considered using Allison trannys but they didn`t like the PTO setup according to the instructor.

that thing is an animal...

Overall, I dig it, but I need to gripe a little- the rear bumper should (and easily could) match the front bumper and side steps. With that much bed length, the bikes should fit all the way in the bed. Seems like a bit much truck to haul a few scooters, too. I think Ram should consider offering the Mega Cab on the Cab-chassis models. It would definitely be the choice for racers, horse folk and RV'ers.

Another entry for the Rumble in the Rockies part 2??? LOL

Fill 'er up Please!

As of 2005, Aisin AW surpassed General Motors Powertrain Division as the largest producer of automatic transmissions in the world, producing 4.9 million units - Wikipedia

Dodge Ram has the ability to remain a top truck seller. I have owned an 89 2500 auto,93 3500 dually stick,95 2500 auto,2003 3500 SRW auto,2008 2500 auto,2009 3500 SRW auto. Dodge needs to step up and build a 4500 Ram with optional bed option. There are some who would buy a 5500 with the bed option too. Wake up Mr. Engineer, and test the market. What about all the questionaires that used to get mailed? Or the mailed questionaires I for one used to get. BUILD IT !!!! IT WILL SELL !!!!!!!!!!!!

The boys at will build you this truck (or possibly one that looks even more factory stock) for around $9500. I have yet to receive a picture of the finished product but if you consider what they can do with an F650 I'm sure it will be well done.

Can you please advise me where I may purchase the Pickup stlye Box as shown on this RAM 550.

Thank you.

Chrysler and Ram really need to offer more cummins engine options. I they they should offer in the 5500 a cummins ISL, or something similar. It produces 365 hp, and 1250 pound feet of torque.
