Judging by these photos just snapped by our spies, plus word from our sources, Ram is set to broaden the availability of its innovative RamBox storage feature to its heavy-duty pickups.

RamBox debuted on the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5-foot-7-inch cargo box. It offers 8.6 cubic feet of dry lockable side-saddle space, with room to squeeze a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood between the bed walls.

What’s unique about the availability of the RamBox for the single-rear wheel Ram Heavy Duty 2500 pictured here is its availability with the 6-foot-4-inch cargo box. We estimate this will increase secure cargo capacity to about 9.75 cubic feet per side. Heck, we might even be able to fit in it.

The 2011 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman added the availability of a $205 gun rack/fishing rod combo holster that fits in the half-ton truck’s unique optional RamBox side-saddle cargo box storage bins. The Mopar RamBox Holster can secure two rifles or shotguns, or it can rotate 90 degrees to hold up to six fishing rods.

Current pricing for the RamBox starts at $1,895. Pricing for the 6-foot-4-inch version is unknown. We expect it to be available next year for the 2012 Ram HD pickups. Allpar reports that Ram 1500 half-tons with the longer box will also have the higher interior volume RamBox.

Our sources also say that Chrysler is working on a RamBox for dual-rear wheel models, too.

@ Jordan L - true. I'm old school. I equate plastic with cheep. It probably will hold up well.
Ram seems to be pushing the RamBox as a "Sportsman's" accessory as opposed to a work grade accessory.

@ Lou I'm not sure what Ram is trying to market the Ram box as. Seems like a work truck idea, they seem to push it as an outdoorsman thing as you said, but I only ever see it on full load Laramies. Maybe they don't even know.

@ Jordan L - same here. I've only seen the RamBox on high end trucks. I did see a Laramie with RamBox used by a tradesman on the building project next to where I work. I'm always amazed by the number of "luxury" trucks used by loggers and construction guys. The big fleets are usually the ones I see with bare bones gassers.

I wouldn't be worried about the plastic. I had a plastic bed on my SportTrac. Plastic bed floor and walls, and even the fenders were plastic. Everything rear of the cab was plastic. It was the toughest truck bed I have had. No dents, no rust, and I used it very hard hauling countless cords of firewood and many many tons or crushed stone. I wish the full isze trucks were built that way.
I'm betting you don't see these Ramboxes on bare bones trucks because it would be hard to justify them costing 10% of the total truck price. That is unreal for a plastic box. Now on a luxury model it drops below 5% of the truck cost.

I guess they have a place, for parking lot braggin rights, for me give me a nice hard tonnue cover, or even a tool box, or maybe a cap! and save $$, like for a monthly payment, or leveling kit, wheels an tires, the list goes on an on. The RamBox is a nice idea, don't get me wrong, but it's real woth is a lot less than the asking price, and it's true, you can only get it on SLT Crew cabs an better so I view it as a rich mans toybox, just my $.02 .

I think this is a great idea for the HD ram. Especially since it is wider than the 1500 so you wouldn't lose that much bed space, especially since you could put all of your tools in the rambox instead of having to pay for a tool box that takes up more of the bed. It's already hard enough to decide between this and a F-250, this doesn't help haha

Sht up Lou. It's not too expensive! Also, your storage box takes up length and width from the bed and is ugly. The RamBox only takes up width!! You keep all of the length. The RamBox is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop talking bad about Ram products.

Lou, Get your figures straight. The RamBox is $500 off!

—On the 2011 Ram 1500 Crew Cab, buyers can tap into $500 RamBox Bonus Cash.

@ Dodge Tech - mighty big chip on your shoulder. I hope your dealership doesn't let you get too close to customers!

Gaston: I believe the bed on the 1/2t and the 3/4-1tHD have the same bed, not any wider, except the dualies, but that is only wider at the wheel wells, and you can't get it yet on the 8" box anyway.

@Lou, Perhaps it is time for you to think for yourself rather than spewing whatever the ignorant RamBox haters are spewing.

I took a real hard look at the Rambox when I purchased my 09.

There were a few things that I did NOT like though.

One was the security of items placed in the Rambox. They do lock but it's a weak lock and easy to pop with a screw driver or prybar. And then the lock or sheetmetal is broke or pulled out of shape. So I would leave it unlocked with only items I can stand to donate. ( Save the repair costs.)
And you just know some kid or crook knows there is something cool in that box and will go to great lengths to get inside to look.

Item two was, I was told I could not walk the rails as I do now on certain jobs. They said the top of the Rambox would not take the stress and weight, Even though it looks like there is walking treads on the lid now.

Anther strike against it for me was the Rambox was only available on the CrewCab.

And you could not get the rambox in an 8 foot box.

@ Lou. Dodge Tech sounds an awful lot like Bob. You seem to attract the attention of individuals with very distinct personality traits. :)

@Jordan L - I thought he sounded like Bobby. LOL
Must be my "Karma" or maybe "truckma" since this is a truck site. (groan)

Dodge Tech sounds awful.

I fixed it for you.

@ Frank - I don't want to know;)

This idea is fine and all, just one comment. I have a rambox 1500, bedrug. the box is very useful, just one concern. I would hope that they are thinking about leaving the bed posts holes exposed or at least available. this would make it a dream to install ladder/kayak racks and maintain the functionality of the rambox. it would also allow for retractable tonneau.

My dealer is currently waiting to place my order for a 2012 Ram 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 SRW because he saw the option for the RamBox, but he's not able to check the box just yet.

This is great for outdoors! Especially how it has a big storage at the back! It'll do a lot of use for my fishing days!

Thanks for your time you've put into this blog and for getting out the much needed information. The storage unit is designed to fit in your pick up easily and conveniently. You can store important documents, first aid box, bungee straps, tow ropes, spare batteries and many other loose items in pickup Storage.
