What We're Testing This Week: Mopar Ram Runner

We've got our hands on a Ram Runner with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that we're putting through the paces at Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area in Southern California, near Palm Springs.

This particular Ram Runner was recently built by veteran Baja racer Kent Kroeker. Kroeker is  the engineering brains and brawn behind the Mopar bolt-on suspension kit. It's been installed on a used 2009 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 that Kroeker purchased with only 10,000 miles on the odometer.

Look for the full story coming soon and teasers on Twitter and Facebook between now and then.

Can not wait. Both pickups [F-150 S.V.T. Raptor & Ram Runner] are winners in my book.

If you look at the photos of the Raptors with bent frames, all of the trucks showed a wider gap at the top of the cab/box junction. That indicates the frame bent downwards. A hard jump landing whether you landed hard on the nose or the tail would more likely bend the frame upwards. That would narrow the gap at the top of the cab/box junction.
That is my take on the whole issue. I saw one of the in-cab video's of one of the bent frame trucks. THe truck hit so hard it almost endo'ed. It looked like the front bumper was plowing earth.
You can wreck anything if you don't know how to drive fast or make a mistake.

You guys crack me up!

I applaud these pickups on the market but where is GM's?

How many years before they finally came up with a turn-key full-size off-road capable pickup (real-one) for those that can afford one!

I just think their size and weight hinders them in tight spots and soft terrain as well as rocks at slower speeds though would you want to take such an expensive pickup full speed into the mud/water/logging trails?

Before I would commit mortgaging the home to get one, I would see how their nice suspensions handle the weight and off-roading on/off the street over the long-term and miles, especially in harsh climates like winters for a few years.

How much maintenance wil be needed to keep them fresh after a few winters? Flashy suspensions like that need attention in all climates like a high maintenance gurlfriend!

I really am looking forward to the Ram Runner and Raptor compairo.

I'm a Mopar guy, but the Runner will get outperformed in all of the timed (0-60, 1/4 mile, etc.) events. The 545RFE/65RFE trans is a performance crippler when compaired to the new 6 speeds of today.

But the Runner will, without a doubt, outperform the Raptor in the suspention department.
