Cummins Could Add 7,000 Employees

Cummins needs to add as many as 7,000 employees over the next five years to meet expected demand, according to Automotive News. 

Cummins predicts sales growth will rise more than 60 percent by 2015 largely because of the global need for more diesel and natural gas engines. Most of the growth is expected to be in South America, China and India, but expansion into other markets is expected as well. Over the next 10 years, Cummins expects the need for more reductions in engine pollution and more stringent fuel efficiency rules across the globe will dominate engine technology and development, requiring more engineering resources.

Cummins said tighter standards for engine exhausts have allowed the company to leverage its engineering expertise, particularly in emerging markets where some of its U.S. rivals lack the technical skill to comply with the tougher rules. 

Cummins supplies the Ram Heavy Duty with the 6.7-liter turbo-diesel I-6 B-motor, installed in over 85 percent of all Ram HD sales per year (close to 100,000 trucks). No word yet on whether a smaller Cummins will make it into half-ton Ram trucks but we know they do have a powerful I-4 motor they use in some South American markets that have also worked well in some military applications.

I think it hilarious as to how all the GM fans always bash everyone and go off on many paragraphs at how they are better than everyone else and then get proven wrong. haha i always get a kick out them. :) but seriously, this makes me wonder why Cummins is needing 7,000 more people... more engines? new Ram 1500 truck in the future? doubt that, as it would most likely use the 4bt or whatever thats called.

I had one diesel and I will stick with gas. Less cost to maintain, less cost to buy, more places to buy fuel, lower cost for fuel, lower repair cost, no smell and less noise.

You all sound like a bunch of little bitches. STFU already. All 3 have great diesels. Each have their strong points as well as weak points.

I agree with John, diesels are a serious pain in the balls in the winter in cold climates. I won't want another.

I hope Cummins makes the move into more dual fueled engines. Natural Gas is selling for $4.00 per 1000 cubic feet, and will do so for two more years. 1000 cubic feet (1 Mcf) can, and is, liquefied to 10 gallons of liquefied natural gas (LNG). That means the $4 gas is $0.40/gallon LNG. The LNG refinery needed to do this, and the refueling stations, and the delivery trucks to supply this is already in place. They can make a profit selling the LNG at $1.40 to $2.00/LNG gallon. Using it together with diesel, dual fuel, happens more overseas than here in the U.S., but we are beginning to see it here too. Hope they build the Cummins dual fuel because in North Dakota 10,000 trucks per day are servicing the new drilling operations there. God, however, doesn't need one, he flies.

@Buy American- the Detroit 6.5 Turbo was introduced for the '92 Model year, the 7.3 IDI Turbo in '93, 3 and 4 years after the Cummins in the Ram.

Actually GM had the 6.2 available in 82, Ford the 6.9 in 83 and Dodge the 5.9 in 89. So GM was first, however not really competitive with the International and Cummins options. Took GM about 20 years to be competitive. Bob?

Diesels can be problematic in cold weather but we are talking about -40 C for diesel to gel. Colder climates will change to "winter diesel" which is basically heating oil. It still will gel, but I haven't seen or heard of a case of it occuring with personal use vehicles. My dad used to be a logger and trucker. It only happened to him a few times and that was literally out in the middle of no-where. Tiger torches can be real handy devices.
Diesel engines have come a long way, funny how guys are saying they are too complex. Look at the new gassers - they ain't too simple either.

Anything at -40 is unpleasant. I had an 03' Cummins and drove it below -40 in northern Alberta and it threw out heat and didn't gel on me. I always carried additive/anti-gel anyway and wasn't afraid to use it lol.

I'm more against the extra O&M cost of a diesel with fuel filters, oil changes etc. They just cost more to service but as far as reliability in the cold? Not an issue with me.

At this stage of my life I'd be willing to look at a smaller diesel Colorado/Ranger type truck as long as it had enough space for tall people up front, small people in the back, get an honest 25mpg+ empty and pull 5000#'s up a hill with no drama if needed. That would be my criteria but if they aren't getting the mileage I see no point.

The article dosen't say the 7,000 employees are for pickup engines. Cummins builds big truck engines also. I remember the last big rig I drove with a Cummins didn't give me any trouble, then niether did the MACK or the CAT or the Detroit Diesel. South America is in the middle of an expansion like the one the US had between the end of WWII and the early 1970's. Remember Cummins is an engine company not a truck company like NAVISTAR.

Gosh some of you guys on here make me want to freaking scream. Your so brand loyal you couldn't see the bad in something if it slapped you in the face. I currently have and had several hd trucks and can tell the the goods and bads without being biased but most of you wouldn't listen because your just sitting there with your head stuck in the sand. The biggest problem we have from our big 3 auto makers is they don't learn from their mistakes. Example: dodge is know for crappy auto hd transmissions and that's for a good reason but they still wont build one worth a crap unless you get a cc truck. Ford right now is still reeking the damage from the 6.0 6.4 mistakes and now their building one in house that supposed to be better? Maybe the 3rd time is the charm. Let's hope so, so they can move on with other improvements. Gm has got it pretty good with the diesel choice and did a dang good job the transmission but continuously lags behind in other improvements like still useing torsion bars for front suspension like they started back in the 80s and just some outdated looking trucks compared to the ford.
If I had my choises I would get a new ford with with a duramax motor (with a switch to turn off 2cy for fuel economy if they would make it) and Allison transmission and then I would have something to admire by all.
