Global 2012 Ford Ranger Scores Highest In Euro Crash Tests

Ford-Ranger ii

The news for small-pickup fans keeps getting better. Autoblog has posted a video of the global 2012 Ford Ranger's most recent crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP, Europe's vehicle safety agency. The new Ranger not only earned the highest scores of any pickup truck, but it also received the highest ratings Euro NCAP has ever awarded for passenger protection.

Ford will equip European Rangers with standard side curtain airbags, side thorax airbags and knee airbags in addition to the front airbags.

The safety scores are a big win for Ford. The 2011 Ranger took a big hit in the U.S. when subjected to revised testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Both Ranger models (regular cab and Super Cab) earned two-star overall ratings.

Domestic Ford Ranger production will likley stop next month with no scheduled replacement.

Way to go Ford Motor Company!!!

Continually showing the world how it is done!

Brought to you courtesy, of the Red, White, and Blue!

I would MUCH prefer this truck to the new F150. Doesn't look like a brick, would fit in my driveway beside my wife's car, and doesn't need the entire realestate of a parking spot at the store. Perfect, and good job Ford!

Bring it here, otherwise you are giving customers to Toyota and Nissan! (Nothing against Toyota oxi, they make fine automobiles... just need the Detriot Iron doing well is all)

@Red_4x4

Don't forget (possibly) GM!

Ford of Australia gets the real credit

What a tease.

Come on now, everyone knows Ford copied this from chevy!!!! Right Bob? ;-) Seriously though, I kinda like the red Ranger in this picture. I have always thought it was rather unattractive, and am not a fan of small trucks. That color really helps, in my opinion it's a decent set of tires and wheels away from being a nice looking truck.

@ Red_4x4- Comments like that.... Idk where you people live but I have no problem parking my 02 S/Crew in my driveway, along streets in town, or in parking lots at wal mart. Im only 23, so I know it isnt that I posses superior driving skills... so are all the driveways, parking lots, streets, etc. all smaller than normal where you live or what?

@benchimus, have you ever had a good mid size like a Taco? At 23, it's probably all you need and you'd be amazed at the convenience and versatility. You don't miss what you never had. Try one.

@Benchimus
i agree i live in a development and have no problem parking my '05 CC F-150 in my drive or anywhere else for that matter, i understand if people don't like full size trucks, but at the same time don't look down on me if i like a full size, i am married with two kids i hunt, fish, go to the mountains, tow trailers, haul cargo, drive around or what ever and would not want anything smaller for what i do, comfort, plenty of room, safety for my wife and kids

Bring it over here with the Ecoboost v6 and a small diesel and I'm sure it will do well.

Both full and mid size have their place, however my opinion is that mid size trucks are greatly misunderstood and under appreciated in the US. The Big 3 could help change that view if they marketed a little.

Here are many more pictures of the Ranger, inside and out.

I'm just thinking about how far this truck has come. My old Ranger barely had seat belts!

Yea, that ford ranger better be safe because it is so ugly that many drivers will have a desire to smash into it. Let's see, where did I read about knee airbaigs and top safety ratings??? Oh yea, GM ALREADY HAS THAT ON THE CHEVY CRUZE AND THE CHEVY SONIC. Both the Cruze and the Sonic have 10 standard airbags and both meet GLOBAL crash test ratings and both are TOP SAFETY PICKS.

So the ford ranger that looks like the ford fusion (front end) is safe, something the current ranger is not. To bad ford fans, cannot buy the fusion ranger here in the us.

I think we can all agree the Global ford ranger is butt ugly compared to GM'S Global Colorado and if you say otherwise then it just proves you have s*&t for brains and wouldn't know beauty if it slapped you in the face. Or it just proves your a ford girly man fan yeah. Oh how I love to beat the ford girly man trucks. It gives me great pleasure.

@UncleBud
i agree mid size is greatly misunderstood, but if they are close to same price and FE why buy something small, like i said before each to his own

Smell you later ford you lost me as a long time customer just purchased a toyota Tacoma sport 4x4 short bed. I sold my 98 ranger 4x4 step side which I will say I will miss. I had 3 rangers over the years since 1985 and I really hoped for a updated truck. So now the circle is complete my first new truck was a 1983 Toyota, ford you really let me down.

"Or it just proves your a ford girly man fan yeah." -Michigan Bob

haterade for days. yeah buddy. learn to spell. yeah buddy.

Gee Michigan Bob, you seem to have a stong bias. Somebody run over your toe with a ford?

I think the new Ranger is sweet looking, certainly looks better then the old model and better then the new Colorado.

I like the looks of the new Ranger more and more. Look at the many pics in the link I posted above. The side views show Ford really designed a nice looking truck. The lines from the top of the hood, bottom of windows, and top of bed work well together. The top of the cab is streamlined and drops toward the rear giving it a smooth look too. The front and rear pics look like all truck to me. IMO, it is a much nicer looking truck than the new Chevy which looks like it was photo shopped from an SUV. Better design. First to market. Tops in safety. Tops in capabilities. Who's copying whom?

I wonder, after an assignment to Europe, if I could bring one of these back to the US with me.

@Dan the Man everybody is always preaching about how mid and full size cost the same, but that's not the case. You cam get a lot more on a mid for 30K, for example. I think one of the reasons there isn't apparent price disparity between the two sizes is that they are putting such big incentives on the full size. Toyota doesn't deal much. But just to be clear, I also have 2 kids 2 dogs. I have a 3/4 ton suburban. No way I could have a mid size truck as the family vehicle. But I also have a crew cab Tacoma that serves as my hunting/work truck and is often my daily driver. I have had all kinds of different size trucks, and the Tacoma is the most useful I've had so far. I complain that I can't get an ATV in the back, but heck it's so light and good off road that I don't even need one. For zipping around town, hunting, whatever, it's the best all around. Full size trucks have their advantages, but there's some things they just aren't good at.

I posted about this on the "Problems bringing the Ranger to the US" thread. It was on the Car Advice Australia.blog yesterday

Ford Australia have done a pretty good job by the sounds of it on the Global Ranger. Too bad Ford US,has not tried like GM in pushing some of its , Ford Australia's products globally.

I am still wondering about the updated powertrain that will follow next year. Anyone heard what motors will be available or possible specs?

@mhowarth. Going by what Mazda has done , I guess drop the Petrol(gas engine). The 3.2 diesel is a bit lacklustre compared to new ones coming out of Europe . The SUV's from Mercedes etc are getting over 430lbs ft of torque.

If I had a small truck that would be close to what I want or need, I would of seriously considered one. I rally liked the Tacoma, but its towing cpacity was outside of my goals. I'd have a hard time fitting my 2 labs, and 2 boys in the cab in -40 weather. I could put the wife in the box, but that wouldn't work out too well either.
I went from a Ford Ranger to a GMC Safari, to a F150 Supercrew 6.5 box. It took me a few weeks to fully adjust to the size difference.
A smaller truck is nicer for maneuverability.
Compacts have become midsized because there are many guys like me out there that find compacts useless. That is why I got rid of my Ranger extended cab.
The van was a stop gap measure that showed me that I'd hate an SUV.
The interior smells like your cargo - a trip to the dump with garbage, a load of compost, dirt, or wet dogs stays for a long time.
Full sized meets my needs.
I like the looks of this truck and the South east Asian Colorado .I don't mind the Tacoma either.
They just don't work for most truck buyers.

sorry ford fans, no (Rump Ranger) sold in the U.S. GM will deliver what Americans want in a Mid Size truck with the all New Colorado that will be built here in the U.S.

GM delivers what customers want and ford well they make you move to another country.

@RR, except for commercial applications. The Transit and Sprinter van diesel engines are detuned compared to cars and SUVs, even when it is the same engine and technology. I think that i5 diesel will be awesome. Now Toyota diesels, they are underpowered. A modern V8 CRD with 140kw/430Nm! Shameful!

I am a Ford guy, but i dunno about this truck. Don't get me wrong its nice and all but seems a little vanilla to me. Nothing world beating to me. I thought they could get a little more aggressive styling wise. And i thought they were done with the 3 bar grill designs?

@Buy American Or Say Bye To America!,

What does that say about the current Ranger!

Get it off the roads...

Once again Ford going overseas to design and build a picup and now relying on Euro standards insteade of U.S. ones!

Ford is anti-U.S. for some reason!

OXI,

Ford of Europe has been around forever !!
The Ford Focus was a Ford of Europe design,Ford of Europe is like Ford of the U.S.A,same company..fact is people dont want small trucks anymore !!

tacoma: I want a midsize, but you are right....I don't want a small truck either. the compacts of yesterday are too small for what I need. Today's midsize are perfect though!

But I see what you mean, with the USA's expanding waistlines and heft (70% overwieght, astounding!), its no reason people don't want small or midsize trucks anymore...they couldn't fit into them. What worked in the days of yore are somehow taboo now, and that is the only logical thought I could come up with. Just imagine how much improved a Ranger would be if Ford didn;t use all their capital proking up a 6K lb F150?

@Unclebud- Yes, when I was in high school I had a 94 ranger. 4.0, 5spd, 4x4, ext cab. Loved it. But for no better mileage than it got, limited room it had inside, and the lack-luster exhaust note of a V6, I decided to go back to a full size once I got out of high school and had the money to do so.

Best mileage I ever got out of that ranger was 19. I could fit one other adult comfortably inside. It had a hard time hauling my friends S10 home the day he bought it. (S-10 and single axle trailer. Not sure on the weight, maybe 5-6k?) My 02 FX4 S/Crew best mileage is 17.5 I can fit 4 other adults in it. The exhaust sounds good and it can haul the same trailer and truck on it (the day he put it out to pasture on his cousins farm) much, much easier. All that and a large driveway and ample parking space at Walmart, the grocery store, etc equates to me having no reason for NOT going with the larger truck.

@unclebud- Now, I certainly do like the looks of Rangers, especially the late 80s and the 2000s and up. If I could have ranger that looked like an 07, was FX4 and had a V8 (even the old 2V 4.6 would be fine tho the 3V 4.6 would be nasty...) and preferably a 5sd, I would trade my truck in right now, extra passenger space be damned. But... that isnt offered. :-(

Compacts have turned midsize and fullsizes have turned gigantic. We want more power and more towing capability, that makes the trucks bigger and heavier. You can't just throw bigger engines into a vehicle and expect the capabilities to magically increase.

I coerced a 5.0 HO into my old ranger and it was a blast to burn fuel in but I could pull a WHOLE LOT more than I could stop! Nothing quite like having a boat push you through a red light!

It looks like Ford may be having a little trouble. They promised their share holders a dividend when they reported earnings yesterday but offered nothing. The market was up but Ford stock dumped. Their quality dropped 10 spots for Consumer Reports and now they are 28th out of all the manufacturers. Looks like Ford is on the SKIDS!

@ greg Learn to read they fell 10 spots to 20th because of MyFord and the Twin clutch trans in there small cars

The problem with the newest generation of the Ranger, follows the same trait as the "Big Three" has done in the past. They find a way to move production out of the country, as more american auto workers scramble to find work in fewer and fewer american plants. Kudo's to the re-tooling that Ford has done in certain area's, but shame on then for finding ways to export job's that american workers need.

The reason the new ranger is being built overseas is because it will be sold overseas. I have no problem comprehending that, can't see why others do.

"The reason the new ranger is being built overseas is because it will be sold overseas. I have no problem comprehending that, can't see why others do." -Tom

So true. Some people think that Toyota is a hero because they assemble the Tacoma and Tundra in Texas. Ignoring the fact that these two vehicles are only sold in North America. If Toyota really cared about Americans then why do not they allow Americans to assemble the HiLux?

Greg is your typical Troll with reading deficiencies.

This is the size truck I'm looking for, the current F-150 has grown to be barge like, this is still plenty capable, and has good interior space.

that truck is about as attractive as a steaming cow patty

@Bob's Gourmet Chef - you must be an expert on those things as an employee of Bob.

This isn't a redone Ranger. This is a redone Sport Trac. The Sport Trac never sold well, so neither would this. That's why Ford hasn't brought it here

Yep, just calling it like I see it. I believe that I have good taste unlike some of the others on here. This truck is so ugly it would make Ray Charles flinch!

@MichiganBob: "Yea, that ford ranger better be safe because it is so ugly that many drivers will have a desire to smash into it. Seems you know tons about cars. cough, cough, impala...

You think wrong, I wouldn't agree with you about the sky being blue just simply out of principle. My standards are much higher for people I tend to agree on things with. Do you beat lots of girly man fords with an impala? I would love to insert a comment about what is really your great source of enjoyment from beating, but I'll not lower myself to your standard. As always, I love your post, more so now because from this point on as i read them I will always be thinking of you as Michigan Bob, Rump Ranger, impala driver. It continues to amaze me time and again how stupid you prove all of us are on a pickup truck website who actually own and drive trucks are compared to a guy driving an impala.

Now the reply posts:
@CE it is no Sport Trac. Unless the Sport Trac had a 3/4 ton payload capacity

@Alex you have posted the Nissan Navara has 440lbs of torque. Like most pickups it is basically light duty, not heavy duty like the Sprinter. Toyota is coming out with much higher output diesels to compete with Nissan and now the Europeans.

@Donald it is 9/10th the size of a basic F150, so it is not that small.

@Oxi primary market is NOT the US. Argentina, Brazil, South Africa , Thailand and Australia are the main markets. It was designed in Australia, with a US project manager a lot of technical input from Mazda and Ford Australia.
