Nissan's Fullsize Van Becomes Passenger Friendly
Nissan has come out with a new passenger version of its function-first (and can we say hideous looking?) NV commercial vans.
The new NV3500 HD van is offered for personal (read: family) and fleet use, offering more seating configurations than any of its two competitors in the segment. In fact, the NV3500 HD can hold up to 12 passengers when optioned with four rows of seats.
The 1-ton van will be offered with a choice of a 4.0-liter V-6 (261 horsepower and 281 pounds-feet of torque) or a 5.6-liter V-8 (317 hp and 385 pounds-feet of torque). Both engines will have five-speed automatics mounted behind.
The NV3500 HD uses a modified Titan front-section boxed frame that gives the NV a very low load floor, an important feature for the commercial van segment. Likewise, NVs can be ordered with a roof extension that allows drivers to quickly grab cargo from the back of the van (from either the driver’s seat or rear doors). The new passenger vans, most likely ordered without the extended roof, are designed to meet the needs of both large families and small-business fleet operators.
The passenger vans will be offered in S, SV, and SL trims and will include option packages such as Power Basic (power windows and locks), Towing (Class IV hitch, wiring, heavy-duty batteries and extendable heated mirrors) and Technology (rearview camera, XM radio, navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity).
The NV is built in Canton, Miss., along with the Titan, Pathfinder, Xterra, Armada, QX56 and Frontier. The NV is available through a select network of certified Nissan commercial dealers. For more info, go to www.nissancommercialvehicles.com.

What a fugly van. This thing looks like an overgrown Nissan Cube with Ford Rump Ranger grille. Nissan needs to go back to the drawing boards on this one. Fuugggllly!!!!!!!!!!!
GM trucks and vans win again.
Because E-series and GM vans are real lookers...
I've spent enough time crammed in E-series vans to know that having the transmission somewhere other than in the passenger footwell is a beautiful thing.
Ford Wins again!
Passenger friendly -perhaps?.
Eye friendly - definitely not!
Does this van come with sliding doors on both sides, or is that first image just reversed?
Not to keen on the looks, but it would be useful for those who discount looks in favor of practicality. I still prefer the E-Series in the full size van lineup. nothing against the others, just like the looks of the E-Series better.
I do, however, believe that the engine bay on the Nissan is better for the shade tree mechanic should those still exist.
CHEVY EXPRESS WINS....FORD E-SERIES AND NISSAN LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who cares what it looks like? It's a purpose built vehicle. I don't need it but doesn't mean it's a POS.
In fact, if it takes Nissan to build a van without a protruding driveline taking up interior space good on them. If I needed a van I'd be giving this one a very close look.

Don't look at it too close or too long. It's so damn ugly it may turn you to stone. Don't say that I did not warn you Dave.
I wouldn't trivialize the benefits of floor space. When I drive my brother in law's Express, I hate how the two front seats hug the doors to make way for the engine. The footwells are cramped, you can't even fit your hand between the door and seat. The steering wheel is off-center with the driver seat, the Nissan may be a lot better to drive. Besides, GM has not updated the Express for a long time, and Ford has not updated the rattly E-series. Long overdue.
I dislike nissans and especially their trucks but there is no denying the fact that the eseries from ford and the express from gm are mediocre vans that do get the job done but are not very driver friendly.
This being that the engine intrudes into the cabin, also being a Ford ASSET Technician I absolutely hate to work on eseries, not mechanic friendly. So to sum it all up as ugly as this nissan van is, it looks like a much better idea than the other 2 and I hope it does well as to prop ford to put the engines on their vans to not intrude to the cabin and to better be able to maintain.
You're not getting more floor space up front.
Chevy Express has 41.3" front leg room.
Nissan NV has 42" front leg room.
Chevy Express has 65.5" front hip room.
Nissan NV has 60.5" front hip room.
Chevy Express has 68.8" front shoulder room.
Nissan NV has 65.7" front shoulder room.
What people and businesses like about vans is the lack of a front end. Nissan said lets make it bigger.
The only thing good about this van is that it's available in a high top version for more cargo room. Ford will also a full-size Transit for 2013 with a high top.
The Nissan NV is proving to be a flop. Perhaps on it's way to be with it's other sibling (accident)- the Pulsar NX.
Dealerships have a 205-day supply of these puppy-dog face looking vans. They have only sold about 3,000, so far, through September. For the whole month of September they only sold 24!
Ford managed to sell around 70,000 Econolines and Chevrolet around 42,000 Expresses during the same period (through September).
Rock on, normal looking vans (Econoline and Express) from America! And soon to be Ford Transit!
@Donald
Those stats mean nothing with regards to the real world of sitting in the vans. The depth of the footwell means nothing if it's also so narrow that you have to squish your balls between your legs for the whole trip. The overall shoulder width means nothing if the seats are crammed against the doors and the driving/riding position is uncomfortable.
The Express van has to be wider because the transmission is riding b*tch.
This van is garbage. Back to the drawing board Nissan!
@Buy American,
I would rather buy the 2013 Ford Transit than this hideous Japanese van from Tokyo.
The Transit van (not to be confused with the small Transit Connect) is already a popular vehicle in Europe. While not known in North America, this is a proven platform, not something new.
私は日本のバンが好きです。.. けれども日産 NV はどのようにオフロードでするでしょうか?
CHEVY EXPRESS WINS....FORD E-SERIES AND NISSAN LOSE of course!
this van has some very good feminine qualities that really appeal to me. good job nissan! ford e-series needs a shot of estrogen to keep up. come on ford i know you can do it!
Well guys, I finally took the plunge and have never been happier in my life. I felt the name change would be appropriate.!!!! I wish that I would have dumped Ford many years ago, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. Life is good now!!!!!!!!!!
can someone please... translate oxi's post!
This is based on the Titan right? This is a 1 ton van available with a v-6 engine which would tell me that a 1 ton Titan and a
v-6 engine for the Titan can't be far behind.
This is clearly a step in the right direction. As for styling, this particular one doesn't turn me off, but nissans in general have
been a little bit odd if not downright ugly the last decade or so.
If you want hideous (interior dash), just check out a mid 2000's Quest mini-van.
The newer Quests vans look halfway normal and lo and behold, sales went up as a result!
I like this van, I think it looks better in person then in picture, I I pass a black Cargo model every morning and I think it looks sweat for a van, Chevy's look decent in my opinion. Even though it has a longer nose and is longer then the Ford and Chevy it has a tighter turning radius.
This van actually looks more American with the big pickup nose and High Chrome content, then then the new European vans coming for Ford to replace the E Series.
@Mike It was a designed in US van.. Nissans global vans do not
have the ungainly "nose "

FORD always wins! Thats why gm and the rest copy them. FORD is the best company out there. gm sux. Ford is the best! Ford is the best!!! Glad my truck has a man step! gm will copy it and it will be the woman step! Let it be said, and it is written!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I still don't see why they don't have a 4x4 option on vans.
Ford never wins!!! Ford copied the tow haul mode from GM and many other things. At least GM owners don't wear feminine undergarments like Ford drivers do. Nissan lowered their standards by grafting the Butt Ranger nose on this van. Shame on Nissan. Oh well, this will give GM more sales...GM wins and everyone else LOSES....ESPECIALLY FORD!!! Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. *evil laugh*
GM wins again.
Saw a cargo version this summer. It's huge in person n actually looks pretty good. If I hadn't see the front end in my mirror first, I would've thought it was a big cargo suv. I wouldn't mind having one keg my need dictate it.
Everyone is complaining how ugly this thing is. But when your 6 foot 5 it hard to get in and out on both of Ford and GMC Vans and especially when I have to fix the engine or transmission. I know, because I have 6 fleets of van for my company. I would consider buying this vans the next time I need to buy one. Its also nice to have extra roof room like the Sprinter. Also, both GMC and ford vans are out dated. If ford or GMC comes out with a van that is easy to work on and have more room then I might consider one.
I think Ford should do a 4 row van based on the Expedition EL,with IRS and EcoBoost
Would this be a good vehicle to pick up chicks?
Yes take the seats out and and put an air matress in the back, you don't have to rent a room.
Yes they are very good to pick up chicks with. I traded my Ford for one of these yesterday. I liked it most for it's feminine Butt Ranger nose.
U know what's great about this that Ford n gm lack. If u have UFO work on the engine, u don't have to crawl way into the firewall. This is one reason I avoid minivans n vans.
Nissan van is an ugly dud, just like the Sprinter, major sales flop!!
GM Vans look aweful, due to the high mounted rear taillights and odd looking front clip,Ford ruined the Econoline with its new grill !!
Dodge went out of the van market after its succesful run of the full size B-series vans, best sellers untiul the mid 90's,and still were the top choice for camper vans and passenger wagons ! The sprinter that replaced the Ram van was a major sales flop,Mercedes thought it would outsell the ram but it didnt, selling a few hundred per month vs thousands per month..Sprinter is a flop, they need a new Ram Full Size for us campers, airport shuttle service's and commercial van users !!
Best looking van ever was the Dodge Street Van's !!
My Dad had a 77 and one of my my uncle's had a 80 Street Van.
My Dad had a black 77 Dodge Street Van 360 4bbl stock except duel exhaust(no lean burn or government smog stuff to slow it down) and the van would stick right beside my uncles new 1984 Mustang GT 5.0. 5 speed So,the old van moves like a new 1/2 ton truck 7 sec 0-60 and mid 15's in the 1/4 !! Pretty good for a van !!
Dodge full size vans were the best sellers until the mid 90's when Diesels bacame more popular. Ford and GM had a Diesel engine,Dodge didnt offer a diesel in its vans.Dodge vans still sold very good until its demise in 2004,Mercedes thought the sprinter would out sell the Dodge ram van...they were dead wrong, the Dodge Sprinter was Chrysler's worst selling vehicle, total dud !!! Dodge...er...RAM by Dodge needs a new Ram Van with a Hemi and Cummins, and not a euro design,to once again rule the world in Cargo,Passenger and Camper van sales !!! Airport shuttles and Church groups alweays had Dodge Vans until the last model in 2003 !!
I'm not a fan of Nissan's styling, but mechanical reliability and functionality are second to none. So what if it's fugly, it looks like it can get the job done!
@ Bob: Lets get this straight. Either A: You drive a 93 model chebby with a crap load of miles, which is probably a rusted out shell if you actually live in Michigan. So why do you even join conversations about new trucks, or tout the greatness of ones you don't own (cant afford)? If the new ones are so great why don't you have one?
Or B: You are the guy from the toyota forum who just comes here to act like a prick. Which if so, the person running PUTC should put a stop to it. Ever hear of professional courtesy? Nevermind, that would involve you being professional, at something other than being a douche bag. Are you mad that this is a better site than yours? (It is. Yours does suck, I checked.)
Either one = C: You are a pathetic, no life, loser (Like Michigan's football team. Northwestern? Really?)
In closing. As always, I love you and hope you, your family, and pets die a slow, painful death. SOON...
Yours Truly: ALTON
@Mark have been in a RAM Van at LA Airport and a greater part of California, not that impressed, very poor space management and ergonomics. RAM Vans as you know them are dead.Chrysler is going from the Sprinter to FIAT Vans. The Sprinter is making a niche in Class Motorhomes.
You have to give Nissan credit for trying to come up with a new van. How old are the Ford E series and GM/Chevy vans? They've been around forever. People buy them because they have no choice. For will kill the E series and bring in the "global" Transit. Ram will bring in rebadged Fiats. What is GMC goint to do?
Nissan needs to change the grill and put a diesel in it.
That is one UGLY ride. Practical, but UGLY.
JD Power ranks Nissan below average.
Industry average is 151 problems per 100 vehicles.
Nissan has 183 problems per 100.
Second to none? Nah. They are below average and at best average.
Nothing in this segment actually looks good. To me, one of the best features about this van is the driving position- much lower than in the E-series and G-Van. That means easier in/out if you really use this van to work. Nissan really should offer a 4wd version though. That would convince a lot of guys that find the $9k price tag of a quigley conversion a bit much. A 12 passenger 4wd 1ton would make an awesome ski resort shuttle. The Ford Transit is coming here with in the RWD layout, and there IS a 4wd option (not cheap @about $4k).

Nice flat roof, Add a pop up camper and we might have the next westfalia
@Jon - It is truly pathetic that the industry average is 151 problems per 100 vehicles. If you own a new vehicle for 6 years that means you will have to get 9 repairs. The
Nissan would need 11 repairs.
