April 2012 Top 15 Pickup Truck Sales

F-150

Sales are still quite strong for the most significant pickup truck players, with half-ton models leading the charge. Total volume for the month was very good for General Motors, with the possible exception of light- and heavy-duty Silverado sales, which were up only a small amount in both the monthly and year-over-year numbers.

Big winners for the month and year include Ram Truck, which is still up more than 25-percent over the same point last year, and the Nissan Frontier, which seems to be the biggest winner in the non-full-size competitors.

But as good as these numbers are, don't be surprised if the only thing you keep hearing is that car sales are taking the lead over pickup sales, accounting for close to 55 percent of all new vehicles sold. And, as you might expect, smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient cars are selling much better than last year as well.

Experts are still saying we're headed to a year-end total sales volume somewhere between 14.3 and 14.5 million new vehicles sold for 2012. That would give us the best sales year in quite a while and, quite possibly, point us to a more optimistic 2013.

Comments

Looks like all of the compact truck sales are up.
Is that because the Ranger and Dakota are no more? or more likely due to rising fuel prices?

"Total volume for the month was very good for General Motors, with the possible exception of light- and heavy-duty Silverado sales, which were up only a small amount in both the monthly and year-over-year numbers"

Even with that being said, Chevy and GM sales have overtaken Ford F series for the "combined" total. Let the gloating from the 2 maybe 3 Chevy fanboi's start ;)
Ever wonder why GMC cannot legally say they have the number 1 selling truck?

I not sure the YTD numbers are correct. They are showing Chevy/GMC outselling Ford. YTD Chevy/GMC 173,658 and Ford 172,062.

Year to date sales are not correct.

F-series should be 191,280.

GM Sierra should be 47,270.

Now is that 14 million sold just in the US?

Just watched Top Gear England and they hopped over to China. How that country can copy so many items and not get in trouble is amazing. But they give some pretty high numbers for cars sold in China.

We all remember the China copy of a F150.

Makes me crazy... but what to do other then try my best not to buy anything made in China.

198,234 total with all gmc and chevy trucks added up together vs fords 187,981. Smells like ford is loseing bad to so calls out of date GM trucks. It really must be a sad day to be a ford fan.

Scott, Good catch.

Ever wonder why GMC cannot legally say they have the number 1 selling truck?

- Because they don't. For the same reason GM'c' cannot claim they have the best selling misdize sedan or crossover for example. You take the Traverse, Acadia, Enclave and SRX combined, one might say 'GM' has the best selling crossover. Yet there is no such thing as 'GM'. Only Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GM's namesake brand GMC. They are all different brands. Until GM corp. cancels all of those brand names and just calls their cars General Motors cars & trucks, they cannot combine the totals of each brand for a given segment. It's cheating to do otherwise.

This is the beauty of the One Ford strategy. It's all 1 brand. And every product under that Ford name is at the top of it's class. GM is still trying to split up good styles, designs and options over 3 main brands instead of giving all the goods to 1 brand (IE: Chevrolet). And yes, this is the reason Ford's are nicer than Chevrolet's now. Chevrolet trucks and cars have to share with Buick and GMC.

It's really no small wonder the Silverado is sliding fast and hard. It's easily the ugliest truck on the planet right now with very outdated interior packages. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Dodge Ram overtake it by the end of the year. I'm frankly surprised it's sold what it has. It's just not an attractive truck. The GMC is at least good to look at. I can see why it has sold a few more this go round.

And the Ford truck wins again against the Chevy. That's just sick and wrong.

@FordTrucks1, You're correct. It's the same reason Ford cannot combine totals in any given segment with Lincoln. It's technically 2 different brands even though it's all Ford. It's also true Chevrolet is getting screwed yet again. The new Impala will Not have AWD. Not even as a damn option! Yet the Taurus gives it to you. GM is just letting Ford walk all over Chevrolet. No way would I buy an Impala to drive my family around in. Not in Colorado! Texas? Fine. Not where there's snow and ice though. It's dangerous and unsafe. The Taurus is a far better purchase over the Impala because of this. Why won't the Impala get AWD? All because of freaking Buick. It's the same with the Chevy Silverado getting Screwed on looks and interiors all because of GMC. I'll always love Chevrolet but I'm flat out disgusted by GM anymore.

@AmericanChevrolet,

Is there a reason why you always have to say "Anymore" at the end of every paragraph?

"Even with that being said, Chevy and GM sales have overtaken Ford F series for the "combined" total. Let the gloating from the 2 maybe 3 Chevy fanboi's start ;)
Ever wonder why GMC cannot legally say they have the number 1 selling truck?"

Lou is a TROLL!

GUTS!

GLORY!

RAM!

I have owned Ford, Dodge, and Chevy HDs. Hook them up guys to a load and see which on handles it overall. I think you will find as far as overall pulling and handling GM will come out on top. Do not need all the fancy interior gagets.

@johnny doe
"It really must be a sad day to be a ford fan."
You got that right.
You don't have to go far for an answer, just read Lou's comment.

@FordTrucksSuck
LOL. He is trying to stir up the pot, that's for sure.

If you ask me, I'm rather happy the Canyon/Colorado pair showed such large growth. Gas prices stay high and maybe the C/C pair will be the full-sized models of the future. At least they'd go back to about the size of the '60s vintage full sized trucks.

well they change the numbers but is still a small gap ford hehe

Gregory J. yeah thats for sure lol

Lou's comment was based on false information.

F-Series:
191,282

F-series and a discountinued model:
217,199

Chevy Silverado, GM Sierra, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon combined:
191,064

If anyone is losing badly that would be GM and their multi brand strategy...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ytCEuuW2_A

@Lou - Ford loses again.

Tom,
That discontinued model is called a Ranger. There is some fans of that vehicle on here so go ahead and call it what it is, but I bet you thought it would sound cooler if you said "F-series and discontinued model", didn't you? LOL

Plus your math is bad brother!

Looks like I need to explain myself to the Gm faithful - all 2 of them.

Quote "Even with that being said, Chevy and GM sales have overtaken Ford F series for the "combined" total."

That comment was based on incorrect data which has subsequently been corrected. The first numbers gave General Motors Combined Corporation a slight lead in truck sales.

The second portion "Let the gloating from the 2 maybe 3 Chevy fanboi's start ;)" was aimed at Johnny Dose and his father Gregory J since they would obviously wave the flag of GMC (says made in China in the lower corner of said flag). I threw in the #3 for Bob since he isn't fully retired and hasn't completely handed over his throne of idiocy to the aforementioned pair.

The last part "Ever wonder why GMC cannot legally say they have the number 1 selling truck?" was a rhetorical question.

If you cannot understand what I have said, feel free to google all of the "big" words.

MAN!

NICE TO SEE THE BIG 3 ARE STILL AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

IT WOULD BE A SHAME IF TOYOTA OR NISSAN SOLD MORE TRUCKS...LOL

I CAN LIVE WITH FORD BEING #1 OR CHEVY OR RAM BUT NOT TOYota OR NISSAN...!

ITS SAD TO SEE THE DAKOTA AND THE RANGER GO...!

lol look at lou try to dig himself outta the troll hole too funny

@Vulpine: once again, the Colorado and Canyon is nowhere near as big as the full size 60s trucks. My first ride was a 69 Chevy with 8 foot bed. Can you even fit three in a regular cab Colorado? I know you can easily fit 3, and if you had two kids in those days you all fit in the front with mom and dad.

If you don't like full size ones, simply don't buy one. You will have more choices soon, when Ram brings out a Dakota replacement. I had an 07 Dakota quad cab and there wasn't enough space for ME. IF they had the longer bed of the club cab with the quad cab, it would have worked better for me. Give it a a half a year you will see full sizes getting atleast 23 for 4x4 and 24 mpg for a 4x2. They will get city mileage that your non airbag, non ac? truck MIGHT get for it's highway best case senario. You won't have to do a bunch of wrenching either for quite awhile, while your old truck might be lucky to go 20,000 miles without a bunch of work. If that's not enough maybe you need a smaller car to drive. Jeep wranglers were never great on gas, and pretty sure they have grown alot since the days of the Army using them. They have turned into big road whales, right?

Oh they had crew cab trucks in the 60s too, atleast I know Dodge did. They sucked alot of gas too! Think of the mileage with 4.86 gears and 16 inch tires @ 75? Scary thought!

Guys just be glad that the sales are up regardless of brand. If Ford is the number 1 truck seller great, if GM beats them one month with GMC and Chevy combined great, and / or if RAM overtakes them in truck sales in time in the future good. How much is Ford giving you Ford guys to gloat? Same question to Chevy and RAM fans? Great that you like your brand but the big picture overall is that they are selling more cars and trucks now and employing more Americans. If Nissan is selling more Frontiers then there are more Tennessee workers who are employed putting more money into the economy. Same with Tacoma in San Antonio. Same with Ford, GM, and RAM. Growup, it is not attractive to see middle age men acting like juveniles.

I do agree with Vulpine that if the midsize trucks gain in popularity maybe Ford and RAM will reconsider putting a smaller truck back in the market. I do not see larger trucks shrinking drastically, maybe using lighter materials and more efficient powertrains. I do not think that if the truck manufacturers make smaller trucks that they are going to discontinue large trucks. There is plenty of room for both and possible to add a smaller more compact size truck. If we go back to making just one size truck that is going back to the 50s where you are offered just a standard size Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, and etc. car and there are no intermediate or compact cars. There is plenty of room in the market to offer more than one size pickup.

P.S. I don't think GM is losing with the record profits they have reported. I don't think Chrysler is losing as well--they had a 25% jump in sales due mainly to the Grand Cherokee. What's wrong with all of them sharing the wealth? I guess if you are a real diehard Ford fan you wish that GM, Chrysler, Toyota, and Nissan workers hit the unemployment line. If so how would you like it if others were cheering for you to lose your job? Growup and be glad to see the auto and truck industry have a revival. I don't want any company to bury another company unless it is just bragging rights. One of the major cures for our bad economy is more jobs. I say bring it on-more jobs for everyone.

Ford girls try to point out how gM is "failing". All the while they are the number one seller in the world just ahead of Toyota and far ahead of ford. GM is a top seller in China, ford sell very few vehicles in China. GM is posting record profits, ford profits are dwindling and their stock is stagnent. Ford pumps 2 billion into their new hd truck, engine and tranny, only to have GM show up with a 6 year old design engine and tranny hd that blows the ford hd out of the universe and embarrasses and humiliates ford. Ok ford girls, climb on your man step, (watch out for the rusted out bed), and yell, I'M A FORD GIRLIE AND FORD SUCKS GM'S EXHAUST PIPES IN EVERYTHING. It will be your moment of truth. I expect Lou to crawl under his ford, that's were trolls go.

@tj-And now you have to stir the pot. Great you like GMs I like them too. I also like and own a Ford. I have both a Ford and GM. I guess I am half a girlie man. I really don't care what you call me because I consider the source.

Lou is now replying to his own posts...hahaha.

Hey Lou, you posted your comment off of whatever numbers were up there, we get it.
It's your intent that is in question here. You're calling everybody that doesn't agree with you a troll, but it seems like it's you that ought to be called one.
And your hate for GM is just idiotic!

@Vulpine,

A 60's truck is way bigger than a new mid size truck !

Looks like the mighty Dodge Ram will take out the Chevy Silverado soon. That's all I care about. Get Dodge in that #2 spot. Then we can worry about Ford.

ram will never pass chevy

@MoparMadness,
Yup, it's only 56K units behind and the gap is growing. Multiply that by 3 and by the end of the year it will by ONLY 170K units behind Silverado. Keep on wishing! LOL

The Ford brand was also the top selling brand for the whole country. Ford just sticks to its roots and that's all that matters to me. Ford makes Fords and they are always top of the line products. They don't need to cheapen their image for another brand to make another brand better in their portfolio!

Ram would have to increase sales another 80% to even have a chance. Chevy even in its weakened state is too powerful for Ram to take out. Then once the all new Chevy arrives, forget about it!

F-Series smokes the GM Twinkies!

Ram is taking out Chevy in 2012.

Ram took out Tundra in 2011.

Ram is taking out Chevy in 2012.

Ram is taking out Ford in 2013.

Ram is taking out Freightliner in 2014.

you guys are a bunch of f@#$ing idiots, just be happy trucks are making a come back we have some very good trucks to choose from

@LOL and Jim: However you forgot Ram brings out the refreshed 2013 with 8 speeds here in the fall. GM sells their trucks for way less off MSRP then Ram and Ford. Cheapest to build! Little things like can you even get a headrest on the back seat of an extended cab or crew cab GM? I seen a whole bunch without. You sit back there when you get rearended and tell me you don't want one.

And when that new Chevy comes out (if they actually hit a home run with it?) Ram brings out a totally new modelin about 2 years later. Speaking of China, GM sure has alot more going on there lately.

Because of Ecoboost engine, Ford is able to have such a big lead. Now GM & Chrysler are bringing CNG Bifuel trucks which may give them some edge and this will leave imports far behind.

Know a guy with a 2010 F-150, bought the same time as my silverado, and his rear diff not needs rebuilding. he has less than half the miles as my Chevy too. A couple others I know with 2010s and 2011s are having major difficult to fix trns issues. I just change oil in my truck, never a problem. 65000 miles rolled last week. Only complaint is in my well equipped regular cab the speakers suck! Might be Rancid's fault tho for playing too loud....

The math for the Titan needs correction. It should be UP 9.8% not down 9.8%.

Gregory J. - I don't hate Chevy or GM. I just don't care for the BS posted by their biggest fanboi's. That would be you, your son Johnny Dose, and king Bob. TJ is full of it too.
GM has had record profits - well, for GM.
As I had posted on another thread, GMC has the dubious record of holding #8, #9, #11 spot for record losses. But, hey, that doesn't count anymore due to GM's rebirth in 2009.
I wouldn't want to use the two "B" words and grossly offend anyone.

I really hope that Chevy's new truck is a hit and sets a new bar for gas mileage. All this competition is just making good trucks even better. I'm anxious to see the EPA mileage on the new Ram's. I do think the hemi's need an aluninum block and direct injection. Ford will probably have to go to 8 speed auto like the others. The next 2 years is going to see a lot of changes and I can't wait. One thing I've got on the rest of you on this site is I could be happy driving any of the Big 3. I don't keep them very long. I just like the new stuff, but I'll eventually run out money. Oh well, might as well go out in first class.

@Mark Williams: Anyway you can add the month before? Looks like the top three is up over last year but it just looks like April is just not as big a month for the top three as March.

@Mikesfx4, EXACTLY! This is why Ford has been and will CONTINUE to kick Chevrolet's ass into the ground until they're buried for good! Chevy's are cheapened out and dumbed down just so GM can keep their Chinese Buick/Gmc garbage afloat. Louis Chevrolet must be turing in his grave... Ford will always OWN Chevy.

Lou,
"I just don't care for the BS posted by their biggest fanboi's"
I will say the same about you and the venom that you're spewing all over each tread.

Give it up Silverado fans. It's a foregone conclusion that Ram will overtake Silverado for the #2 spot either this year or definitely next year with the 2013 revised model blowing the doors off the whole pickup industry. Keep clamorous for your 2014 model. Knowing GM's conservative lackluster approach to new models, I don't expect it to be any sort of earth shattering improvement. Just a heads up that a brand new Ram is scheduled to be released for 2015. Lol good luck, Silverado. Ram's onslaught continues.

Amen Ram-Man!! Chevy is done for... Next up, Ford.
