Retro 'Trail Along' Highlights Vintage RVs

RVshow23 II

Story and photos by Mike Magda

Back in the day, travel-trailer owners used their personal vehicles or shop trucks to tote their Airstreams or Vagabonds cross country — there were no one-ton turbo-diesel crew cabs with navigation systems and leather seats. This is how real truckers went on vacation with their families.

The fifth annual Trail Along to Pismo vintage RV show was held last weekend in Pismo Beach, Calif., and it featured an eclectic collection of old pickup trucks, station wagons, woodies and a few truly unusual home-built tow-vehicle creations. Highlights included a BMW pickup along with the Boles Aeros, Streamliners, Silver Streaks and the always cool Teardrops.

The show offers a nostalgic atmosphere, with kids riding around on Stingray bikes, women dressed in poodle skirts and all the trailers decorated in classic vintage decor. We strolled through the 300 allotted spaces at the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort looking for the coolest tow vehicles we could find. We'll let the photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Old Chevrolet's kick so much ass it's not even funny.....

Good stuff!

Nice! It has been a dream of mine to have a shiny old airstream towed by a 50's pickup (with a modern fuel injected powertrain and disk brakes underneath).

Vintage DODGE POWER WAGON with CUMMINS conversion.

Fords rule Chevys drool!!!

VERY COOL !!!

Nobody said anything about the BMW pickup/el camino

How bizarre!

I love to see those old camper and trailer setups. It seems crazy today to imagine how family members piled in station wagons and towed sizable trailers cross country.

Now that I think about it, it's sort of like Australia today. LOL!

@Scout, as far as I'm concerned, 1999 happened. Chevy trucks still ruled the streets up till then. Of course, some wil say 1988 happened when we lost our SFA's yet they still give tons of credit to the 88-98's for 1500 duty. The general concensus among nearly everyone I know is that Chevy offroaders died in 1988 and Chevy trucks period died in 1999. The last 2 generations of Chevy trucks (1999-present) are worthless garbage. I don't even consider them real Chevy's. The last real Chevy Truck built was the 1998 GMT400..

CHRYSLER HELPED TO BUILD THE FIRST A-BOMB.

It seems to me that every old Ford that rules is 9 times out of 10 powered by Chevy!!!

Mostly Pickups and SUV's these days, but you have US Pickups, MDT US Pickups, Japanese and European MDT's and the same for HDT Trucks for very large 5th Wheelers(45ft plus and extremely heavy Caravans.).
Still this fellow did this in the US. The car is the Holden Calais, he towed this HTT across the US, then ended up HTT Less in Central Russia !!!!

the black truck with red wheels in the 5th pic down, is sweet, but I don't think I have ever seen one b4, my guess would be maybe a studebacker? IH? Diamond T? anybody out there know, Mike?

i believe the current Chevy Silverado's used the flat black 40's era pickup show above as the styling basis for the front fenders.

Old MOPARS ruled them all.

@sandman4x4,

In regards to Chevy powered Ford, everyone knows that a Chevy motor is sold for dirt cheap!

@ Superdave- haha I have thought the same thing before. Id LOVE to have an old truck body but with EFI Engine, disc brakes, and A/C.

It seems to me that every old Ford that rules is 9 times out of 10 powered by Chevy!!!

@Sandman, Chevy engines are godlike. Chevy trucks themselves though suck now. They didn't use to though. The above is right, 20 or 30 years ago Chevy still ruled the world. Take me back to the 80's/90's please.. Or any era before....
