Spied! Another F-150 Face Gives Little Away

Ford looks to be deep into F-150 experiments, as our spy photographers are getting more snapshots of different half-ton variations in various forms of camo.

Not only are Ford engineers playing with front-end aerodynamics, they're also looking to include more upscale lighting choices, most likely on upper trim packages. And we wouldn't be surprised if active shutters in the grille are under there as well. We think it's curious that the two headlights seem to be covered with material of different size and shape.

We also like the fact that engineers are playing with grille styling, injecting a little bit of Super Duty attitude into the lighter-duty option. The two-bar grille with the F-250/F-350 signature outer vice brackets could imply that this regular-cab long bed is slated for more severe work duty. This photo goes not give away what that means for what sits under the hood or how strong the frame and chassis are.

Although these pre-production models are running around with EcoBoost tags on the doors, there could be something more unique being tested. Still, with the announcement that production is ramping up at the EcoBoost engine plant in Brook Park, Ohio, we're sure Ford is going to continue producing as many of the V-6 twin-turbos as people want to buy, which seems to be quite a lot each month.

All the whiny cry-babies about the every four-year refresh are just trying to make themselves feel better because *their* favorite brand only updates every 6-7 years. Ford has clearly stated that they do this to keep their models 'fresh' instead of the GM Twins that have looked the same for at least 6 years by the time they finally get an update...and it applies to all Ford's vehicles, not just the trucks.

Anyway, being #2 for 35 years has GOT to be tough on anyone. I sympathize.

By the by, there is NO competition between GM's boat anchor 5.3 and the EB. Even the 6 withOUT turbo gives that motor a run for its money when they're unloaded.

No matter what they do it will still look better than this ugly ass cartoon looking Silverado Chevy has now. It will still offer King Ranch, Platinum, FX4. Harley Davidson etc.. trims. Something for everyone to choose from unlike Chevrolet with their cheap quality LT/LTZ interiors. Where's Chevy's Platinum? Where's Chevy's King Ranch? LOL... Chevy's oh so wonderful V8 still has Piston Slap after a decade and a half of production. Ford's are nicer than Chevy's now and that's all there is to it. They're better looking, higher quality and better built. Chevrolet gets it's ass handed to it everyday in sales by Ford.

With the world class F-150, the Raptor and the Super Duty with it's true SFA and tucked up frame, it's pretty easy to see why FORD=TRUCKS. Chevrolet's a joke now thanks to those idiots at GM.

Back on topic here. It appears that Ford is not just trying to update the look but add some aero tweaks too. I bet we see highway mileage go up by 1 in all trucks. that will allow Ford to stay with the new Ram (I know no EPA figures have been given yet) at probably 24 mpg for the base V6's.

I think Ford is planing on a new 2016 model so this should tide them over with new competition out over the next 12-18 months.

Good call on the mpg increase. I think you are right on the money. The new model will be a 2015 out in 2014. Confirmed. The 2013 refresh will make GM work a little harder on their 2014. Then Ford can destroy it in 2015.

I just wish Ford would go back to a more sportier styling like the last generation, this one looks too flat-nosed/slab-sided. Definitely think they should stay away from duplicating the super duty grille too.

This is the nice thing about Ford trucks. A grille update is all they really need. Both the SD and the F-150 are near perfect designs. Why mess with perfection? Chevy really needs to get with the program in their designs. I used to drive Chevy trucks but these last couple have been so bad looking I just couldn't stick with them any longer. Ford's are very clean and sophisticated in their designs. Chevy's used to be but not anymore. They're gaudy looking and almost clumsy in their appearance. Ford's have nice clean lines and perfectly pressed round wheel arches. So do Dodge's and Toyota's for that matter. Chevy's wheel arches look like they were designed by a 5th grade art class. For that matter, so does the rest of this truck with that bad front end and fender bulges. Chevrolet really needs to get with the program design wise. I can't even say their cars look good any longer. What happened to the class and sophistication of old Chevrolet?? And what's with Chevrolet's poor interiors now? They're ok at best for a 1990's truck. Compared to Ford and Dodge, they're awful.

@Dave, exactly. GM is still screwing around wasting resources on 2 different truck lines instead of just focusing and making ONE perfect world killer of a truck.. It's absolutely ridiculous. Chevy will have a half assed Silverado in 2014 as it is just so Buick dealers can stay afloat with Sierra sales. Then Ford will kill what (if any) momentum the Chevy Slverado has. Mike Rowe will be making yet another round of commercials about the Chevy guy switching to Ford. The whole thing pisses me off. GM just continues to flush Chevrolet Trucks down the toilet.

I believe the new Silverado will be a flash in the pan. It will sell well for a few months and then taper off. They might put the disc brakes on, the bigger gas tank for short bed 5.3's, 115 volt outlet, new trailer plug with no adapter, auto up and down windows, and auto dimming pass. mirror. This will bring it up to the level of my Ram. In 6 months they will be chasing Ram and Ford again when they come out with more things that Chevy won't have. All the little things add up.

@Ken, Tis true... Ford just makes their reputation in the trucking world stronger with each passing year. Exterior designs, interior designs, build quality, different models and the rest are really what makes Ford truck loyalty and thus car loyalty so strong. For the first time in my life I bought a 2500. I've always bought 1500 Silverado's in the past. Making the switch though the biggest thing for me was the high frame and solid front axle of the Ford. I just couldn't plop down 60 grand+ for a truck with a low hanging frame and torsion bar suspension. The Chevy salesman Bragged about the Chevy HD ride quality but I thought it was abysmal. My new Super Duty rides far better in my opinion. So I don't even know why Chevy screws around with that IFS they have. If it wasn't a Ford I would have bought a Dodge as it's similar to the Ford. Others are right on the interior and exteriors of the Ford and Dodge. Both look worlds better than Chevy on the outside and on the inside both are lightyears ahead in quality and luxury.

Another Ford tread that has turned into all out SILVERADO discussion....LOL
Just like any Ram tread does.
You Ford boys just keep on dreaming how Ford "will kill what (if any) momentum the Chevy Slverado has" with their new F-150. Just keep one thing in mind. THERE WILL BE NO NEW F-150 FOR AT LEAST 8-10 YEARS. F-150 is going down the same path SD has. That means: SAME, OLD, WEAK truck for at least 15 years.
I got to say it.
With new grill every year. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I believe the new Silverado will be a flash in the pan.

-It will be no doubt. Chevy has too much baggage to overcome now. Looks, interiors, build quality... It will take more than 1 model to overcome their poor/cheap reputation they've created for themselves the last 15 years or so. And when Dodge and Ford are coming out with fresh models shortly after, Chevrolet's spotlight in the sun will be shortlived. It doesn't help that GM blows it's wad on those stupid GMC's either.

Chevy's wheel arches look like they were designed by a 5th grade art class. For that matter, so does the rest of this truck with that bad front end and fender bulges.

-Yep. I agree. Horrible horrible truck design all around. I didn't like the last one either. The front end looked Chinese. It's the truck that made me switch to Ford entirely. If the Silverado would have kept the same front end it had from 99-02 like the Sierra did I might have stayed. For that matter the Silverado Should have looked like this Sierra does. I can't stand these bulbous wheel openings on the current Silverado at all. How that design element made it through is uncomprehendable to me. I don't like those akward square cut outs for the tires either. Those should be round like the tires to look more classy. Round wheel wells like the old Chevy's had have always looked better to me. Plus you can see those horrible wax dipped rusty frames clear as day with these square ones. Ford's and Dodge's wheel openings close that off more. Add to it they paint their frames and Dodge gives you wheel liners standard. GM really did wreck Chevrolet in a bad way.

THERE WILL BE NO NEW F-150 FOR AT LEAST 8-10 YEARS.

@LOL, If you believe that for a split second you're a complete fool. I wish it was true. Dodge would finish the takeover of Chevy then Ford for good in that long of a timeframe. Ford isn't that stupid however. It's a total bluff.

I have to back the SD though. That truck looks as fresh today as it did the day it came out. That's Chevy's problem since the 1998 model ended. Look at Any Chevy truck from the 1950's up. For instance, the 67-72's could still be produced today without a doubt and look fresh without a single change. So could the 73-87's. So could the 88-98's. The problem now is Chevy has to change their entire truck every few years because they keep striking out on the Silverado designs and produce dud's. The last two have been abysmal failures in exterior design. Ford and Dodge make consistantly great looking trucks. There's really no need to change them.

@LouC., dead on!! GM should have just kept both trucks the same for both models. From 2003 and up the Silverado has been freaking ugly as hell. It's like GM Forced themselves to try and make 2 different designs and Chevy got screwed royally. Dumb Dumb Dumb... They should have kept em the same like they did for decades upon decades prior. Typical GM. They can't help but screw up a good thing. The Silverado's (CK's) of the past were simply gorgeous! Not anymore.

I drive a Ram now, but let me say what I like about Ford. These guys listen to the customers. When guys complained about the little gas tank on Eco's, Ford offered the big tank the next year. I complained about 4wd auto and they have that now. People have moaned about Chevy's brakes. What happened--nothing. It's been since 2004 and they don't do anything. The brakes and the big gas tank were the 2 main reasons I switched. I'm tired of asking for something and getting nothing. So long Chevy, hello Ram and Ford.

I fully agree with all of Deans statements

And also these trucks are not 8 years old the frame on these is different from the previous bodies and new engines transmissions interiors and exteriors.

I have an 06 and these trucks are completely different from mine

I'm totally uninimpressed with the current Chevy half-tons. I hope to be impressed with the new ones coming out (including the Tahoe and Suburban). Ford has the best half-ton, followed very closely by Ram. Chevy has the best HD truck. I think I am about as fair as they come on here.

Hate to burst your bubble guys but I'm on my 2nd Ford truck and my last. For the truth in Ford customer service visit http://fordf150news.wordpress.com

If you got the well built truck promised, I'm glad but there are some of us who got the royal shaft. No vehicle is perfect but customer service can be - Toyota is one example of that. I just hope those of you blessing the Ford get into no problems with it, as the true nature of the beast does come out.

They need to do something with the front plate on the ecoboost, just looks bad with the offset plate, although I noticed some dealers putting the center monted plates on eco models probably unknowingly affecting cooling.

The R&D on the F150 is in the U.S. Unlike GM moving R&D to china, Ford keeps it in house at home.

CGM (China Government Motors) will soon have thier headquarters in China and will be exporting vechicles to the U.S.

Next time you a chinese knock off of a chevy or gmc, it could be the real thing!

The FX4 and the Raptor look the best to me, I hate chrome!

Hideous!

@johnny doe, Jack, abraham and some other non informed posters. I had since new a 2004 FX4 SCab 5.4L for about 200,000 miles. It was a great truck with minor problems all the time i used.

I replaced with a 2010 FX4 SCab 5.4L and belive me It's a totally different truck.

Ford takes every bolt and nut and do it better, not radically different, only better and for me this F150 with now about 45,000 miles in 14 months it's a grat truck.

I'm not to bash the other brands because I don't have any recent experience, the only other brand I used was GM. The last was a Silverado 1988 and a Chevy S10 97 and they was good trucks but I feel the S10 was not as good as it would be. That meke me change to Ford.

I don't have any brand loyalty (for me it'sridiculus) My only loyalty is to my money and I'll place it to the brand I feel is going to give me more for my money.

From 2003 and up the Silverado has been freaking ugly as hell. It's like GM Forced themselves to try and make 2 different designs and Chevy got screwed royally.

@Mike, I agree as do many around these parts. They have a name for those slant eye trucks down here but it's a racial slur I won't repeat on this forum. It's not looked at fondly. I didn't care for this model either. Chevy really lost it's way. And I flat out refuse to drive a truck that says GovtMoCo on the grille just to get the good looking body design. A guy might just as well switch over to Ford which many have done and continue to do. I'm still giving Chevrolet one last and Final chance though. They better nail this next truck design to the wall however. And we better get Ford equivalent interiors to the Platinum and King Ranch. I still want that Silverado Outlaw if they are doing it. I've always been a Chevrolet man but the ties that bind are wearing very thin these days.

So many clueless peeps. The big 3 have different new model release dates for their light duty trucks. Typically Dodge followed by GM then Ford. Dodge is upping the ante to try and gain converts for MY2013. Ford is simply doing some cosmetic changes like HIDs until the new F150 comes out in MY2015.

Since F150 sales are still strong why fix something not broken. My 2011 FX4 is the best truck I ever owned!

Jesus Christ on a stick, there are some whiny little Dodge/GM fanboys on this site. It must really burn, the fact that the F-150 remains the best selling truck year after year after year.

As for the current variant being "8 years old," that's a load of crap. My '11 is a completely different beast compared to my '05, and I've been driving large vehicles since passing my drivers exam in a '79 Silverado Suburban, so it's safe to say I know a thing or two about trucks. Pissing and moaning about the competition doesn't make your brand of choice look better, it makes you look like a childish ass, and actually demeans your brand by association. Grow up, or just shut up.

Gotta agree with cash. I thought when the '07 Siverados were produced that Ford might lose the title. My brother has '10 GMC and hasn't mentioned any problems. I like the fact that he has dual zone atc with cloth seats. You have to opt for leather in the Fords to get the dual zone atc.

This is a good post from Max. Thanks

Ever notice the Chevy guys can hardly string a sentence together when slamming a Ford and that their grammar skills are only matched by a 7 yr old child? (and I'm really only talking about the ones who are acting like they're 7) Are you smarter than a 5th grader? Nope...you're not.
