The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 2009 and 2010 Ram pickups because the rear wheels may lock up, according to The Washington Post. The investigation affects up to 230,000 Ram vehicles.

No recall has been announced yet, and Chrysler said it is cooperating with the government, the Post reported. NHTSA opened the Ram investigation after receiving a dozen complaints about locking rear wheels, the Post reported. Some sources are reporting the issue may involve a pinion nut coming loose in the rear differential that can cause the rear driveshaft to lock up. No specific Ram trims were mentioned.

We were backing our 2009 Ram with our travel trailer when it suddenly wouldn't work. Ultimately we had the transmission overhauled using our warranty. I am so glad that this problem happened when we were slowly backing and not driving!!!

@x007, You are full of $#!*, Your Gutless 5.4L will get smoked by the tundra or the 5.7L Ram. Nice story. LoL. Hope you got an over sized fire extinguisher for your BBQ on wheels F150. If you are not on drugs I feel sorry for you. Good Luck.

@HEMI V8 I think this will help.

Help is just a phone call or a pull of the trigger away!

@Lou, This is NOT a Ram made part and there has been NO RECALL!!!!!!

Ford fans are jealous.

@Lou, Remeber the code of the west. Never covet another man's ride.

GUTS
GLORY
RAM!

The Ford boys are definitely jealous of this 13 Ram. Their best hope was that Ego Booster V6. LMFAO. This new Ram is going to blow their doors off in every way. Hang in there. The fun has not even started yet. Can't wait for the 13 Ram to hit the dealer.
Chrysler already is the fastest growing auto maker. This new 13 Ram is going to be a huge success. Good luck Ford and G.M. you got your work cut out for you.

Anyone else think that our good friend Bob has jumped ship from GM to Ram? The non stop trolling of every thread, the large number of aliases that are cleary being written by the same person, the same wierd obsesion with Lou? Any one who stoops to HEMIs level is even more dumb than he is. Ignore him(them) and he (they) will go away eventually.

Back to the point of the story. I have some doubts as to the cause of this problem. I'm actually a Chrysler mechanic. I've worked on a truck that had broken the pinion gear. This would have the similar effect of a pinion nut backing off as there is nothing preventing the actual gear of the pinion gear from doing something harmful. I was able to drive the truck into the shop. The way the gears are cut pushes the pinion and ring gears apart when traveling forward. However when it came time to back the truck out, I couldn't. The crown gear drew the pinion gear into it because there was nothing preventing it from moving back as it was broken and locked up the rear end. I've also driven 3 different vehicles with loose pinion nuts at high way speed and never had a rear end lock up. So how can this happen going forward down the highway?

@jordan L, How do we know it's not Lou himself trying to make Ram guys look dumb? I have caught Lou posting under numerous names in the past.

@ Hemi V8. Dude, give me a break. Your not fooling anyone. If you want people to take you seriously just tone it down. If you don't care what people think then carry on. But if you like Chrysler half as much as you claim to then take some advice. Your doing more harm then good. You'll never convince anyone your truck is better with your atitude.

@not really a hemi V8 - all I have to do is make a post using grade 2 grammar and I end up making the Ram trolls look dumb.
You make yourself look dumb.
Please point out where I have made fake posts. I'd love to see what you come up with.
Are you like this at work? No wonder you love unions!

@Jordan L - Thanks. You are right. It is a complete waste of time replying to this dud (and no, it isn't a spelling error).

@ ram fans

are you guys embarrassed by Hemi V8? do tell

all the brands have their recalls, when your building thousands of vehicles on a mass assembly line its bound to happen, we should all be thankful car companies and the government catch this stuff and get it all fixed in a timely manner so everyone is safe.
cheers

@Dean, There was NO RECALL!!!

I had a front diff failure tht caused a lock up in a chevy while in 4x4 in the snow, spun out into a ditch.

On the switch fires, must not be that common or more people would know about them. My dad has a 93 Ford Turaus SHO which was on the list. He bought it new in 93 and it was his dailiy driver till he bought his 2011 mustang 5.0. we have not moved, and with his analretentive attention to maintnence you'd a thought he would have know that his car was recalled. i just am having a little problem beliving what an ambulance chaser says on his website. i think everyone knows about the Firestone tire depacle, why is it rthat people have never heard of this problem.

@Hemi. They don't comprehend what they read. Then they wonder why I get frustrated. :(

Lol guys guys...Leave Hemi alone...He's going to cry himself to sleep tonight. WAH WAH MY TRUCK IS SECOND RATE!

Lol what a loser.

I don't know what the big deal is?

All I did was say "Gotta love the comments on a recall thread. What a waste of bandwidth."

Does "Under Investigation Thread" sound better?

Yup.

No big deal,

Just like being told " Meet me in my office at 1:00 oclock and bring a Shop Steward!

RAM IS THE BEST TRUCK ON THE ROAD FORD AND CHEVY NOT EVEN CLOSE

GUTS!!GLORY!!RAM!!!!!!!!!

Tony as in "Fix It Again Tony"?

or is that mechanic, or Ram, or Hemi, or Hemi V8, or Ram Man, or Chrysler Tech, or Ram Guy, or ....................

Is trolling for trolls still trolling?

Gotta love the comments on a recall thread?

But this is not a recall!

@Lou, Is being The king of trolls (Lou) Trolling for trolls still trolling?

@not really a hemi or american made or american owned -
if I am the King of trolls, then what are you?
The Queen.
All hail:
Queen Ram of Italy.
ROTFLMFAO

Seems there is already a recall on the rear ends...

Also "Look what an idiot. See anything wrong with your first sentence??? HIS*" there is a big difference from missing a letter while typing quickly causing a misspelling and being completely imcompetent in the proper use of a word. Nice try there slick...

Curious if there is any serious recourse to attempt with Dodge, the rear end on my 2009 RAM 1500 Quad Cab destroyed itself, broken axle, twisted drive shaft, damaged the housing, coming down Stevens Pass in Washington State, on holidays pulling a trailer, covered by warranty but still out of pocket. I had about 15 or 20 seconds of serious grinding to warn me, slowed down before it locked up, the more I talk to people about this the more similar occurences I find.

Uncle and cousin comeing out for annual elk hunt in colorado last week and just south of walden pinion nut came off and rear diff locked up and drive shaft dropped. (2010 1500 with 40k) Luckily only going about 40 mph but still skidded off road into dirt with an atv in the bed. Called dodge customer service and truck sent to steamboat and will take 3 weeks to fix. What a mess. This pending recall can't come soon enough before someone gets killed. If road was icy or going at a higher speed they'de be gone. Retorquing these nuts is alot cheaper than the lawsuit they are gonna get when someone dies now that the words out. Come on dodge! p.s. Ive only owned 2 vehicles since 94, both 3/4 ton dodges and have only good things to say about mine.
