Spied! First Shots of 2014 GM Interior

Silverado Int Spy 2 II

It was bound to happen. Long, hot days spent in the summer heat — even if you're doing something very cool like hot-weather testing full-size pickup trucks — is bound to make you a little sloppy. Thankfully, it didn't make our spy shooters sloppy. As soon as they saw an opening to sprint over to a waiting test truck and snap a few photos, they took it. Here's what they had to say:

"We've nabbed the first shots ever of the 2014 Chevy Silverado's interior, and we caught it completely undisguised. These shots have been a very long time coming, with numerous unfruitful attempts at getting a glimpse of the new truck's dashboard, thanks to the heavy interior camouflage regimen employed by GM engineers — up until now, that is.

"The Silverado's dashboard is a definite improvement over the outgoing model. The design has a greater feeling of precision, and a feeling of improved build quality. The material quality of the surfaces also looks to be a marked improvement over the current model. The display screen on this prototype looks small, but there's no telling which trim model makes up this test truck; a larger LCD screen is likely on higher trim packages. The center stack has an interesting row of buttons at the bottom, which appear to operate somewhat like toggle switches; however, it's difficult to make out the functions contained within the switch array."

We'll have to wait and see if those GM engineers give us a chance to see other trim packages with larger displays. Until then, this looks promising.

That small display screen almost looks like one of those pop-out cassette decks, kind of like this...

Much better, but I don't like the Ford style HVAC controls. I also don't like passenger side airbags that bust through the dash cover when they deploy. Should be a door for them.

looks crammed, nothing special, some will like other will not

LOL!!! Is this a freaking JOKE? Ha Ha.... Like Dodge or even Ford has anything to fear from this thing. Chevy is a joke now. Those idiots need to give it up. They have built a good truck in over a decade, maybe two. This interior sucks.

Not to sound negative as I was kind of rooting for Chevrolet with this next truck. I hate to see such a cool old company gown down in flames like they've been doing for the last truck or two but I'm not all that impressed with this. It really looks dated and somewhat cheap. I'm really convinced they just need to go to one single truck line so they can spend the money to do things properly. There's nothing GMC does that Chevrolet cannot do if GM would just let them. I'm afraid this interior just doesn't stack up to the Ford or even Dodge offerings. Maybe they'll have two interiors again? Although, I never did understand that either. Why not just do one with high end variations? I've kind of lost my faith that the Silverado will ever regain it's footing. These guys just aren't cutting it anymore.

Finally a breath of fresh air. Too bad my beloved Fiat isn't brilliant enough to come up with something as good as this.

This is not a good enough upgrade to compete with Ram or even Ford.

Is this the PHENOMENAL looks that are supposed to "blow away" the competition, Bon Scott?

What a joke you are!

Lord almighty welcome to Ford circa 1997. This looks like ass. I thought the company who did the Ford and Dodge trucks were doing the Chevy's now too? Did they run out of ideas or something? Did the good designers get fired? Quality materials in short supply? What's GM's excuse this time? Stike 1- GMT800's, Strike 2- GMT900's, Here comes strike 3. Chevrolet is done for.

This thing sucks. Amen to 3 strikes you're out. What did we give them? Like 50 billion dollars or more? And this is the best the oh so wonderful Chevy Silverado can come up with? Maybe Dodge is coming up to take over 2nd place in sales but I don't even see how Chevrolet can hold on to 3rd place if they get knocked down. This whole truck is yet another mess. These guys can't get anything right in exterior or interior design. Time to fire everyone and start fresh before this dud get's launched. I can see Toyota and Nissan just salivating over this. Major let down..

Is this the PHENOMENAL looks that are supposed to "blow away" the competition, Bon Scott?

-Bvonscott is just a gmc girly man who wants to force his GovtMoCo Sierra agenda on everyone. He also goes by Tyler,Sierra,SierraGS and a few other names. He even claimed to be Nsap (Nick from GMI). That guy is a first class fool who knows zilch.

Is it just me or does it look like the dash is "giving birth" to the center stack?

I thought Mark Reuss said these interiors were going to be exceptional? Pftt. That's far from it Mr.Reuss. What a joke Chevy trucks have become. The laughing stock of the industry. It's almost like GM is Trying to kill off Chevrolet on purpose. A$$holes.

I thought the 900's sucked. This looks to be even worse. What's wrong with these guys? Do they think it's 1989? Because this would be a great interior if it was to debut in 1992.. Sorry Chevy guys but Ford has nothing to worry about after seeing this. Neither for that matter does the Ram. I don't even know what to say.. I was expecting to be blown away. As far as the Silverado has been lagging behind for the last 15 years or so, I was expecting quantum leaps forward in both design and quality of materials. This is a very poor effort. I'm stunned to be honest.

Wow is all I can say and I dont mean that in a good way. Reminds me of my 1998 F150 interior. That is not good news at all. The more competition the better for us consumers, but this?.....sorry

HUH..Chevrolet makes a truck ? Never Notoced !

I can't believe I stuck around and waited for this. I'm not impressed. Where's the center console? Where's the floor shifter? Geez, both Ford and Dodge offer these things and Dodge even has a dial shift now. What the heck? Are these fleet trucks fro UPS or something?? No thanks. I'll be leaving Chevrolet for good after seeing this crap. F-series or Ram it will be for me now. My days as a Chevy guy are officially over.

Ill give them one thing, it certainly looks soft touch.

I do agree it looks a little funky with the center stack recessed but what do I know, it is a pre production base model truck that is still 6+ months away from being seen in production form. Look at the base dash of the Ram versus the Limited or the Ford XLT versus the Platinum, pretty big difference. If you guys are comparing this to the Platinum and Limited levels just wait to you see it then judge (solely on looks as everyone does here). As long as the interior is a big improvement I don't care if it is class leading (as I quoted Bvon who as much as you want to think I am not him) as opposed to matching (I buy non leather mid level models) as much as I care the rest of the truck remains the best (Chassis, engines, transmissions, suspension, ect). The best interior in the world won't save you from rear axle problems (Dodge) or engine problems (Ford)... Besides, looks are subjective and like assholes, everybody has one.

Glad to see the column shift stayed! Still curious to see which way the exterior design goes, as long as it looks pretty good I don't care if it is better than the dodge (yes it looks the best IMO). Comparison tests aren't won on looks, just do above average on looks and build a great rest of the truck and it will be fine. GM already has a huge base of buyers even with the 6+ year old GMT 900's.

Carry on with the bashing!

That is one ugly glovebox. You've got to be kidding, right?

@Tyler/SierraGS/BVonScott, GM's customer base is dwindling and Fast. Rarely if ever do you see a new bodystyle (from 04 and up) F-150 or 250SD sitting on a Chevy lot traded in. On the flipside, you see Tons of used Silverado's sitting on Ford lot's that were traded in on F-Series trucks. Chevrolet just shot themselves in the foot again.

Looks very clean, simple and user friendly . I see nothing wrong with it at all. It is a vast improvement over 900s, I am also glad to the column shifter where it is .

as long as it looks pretty good I don't care if it is better than the dodge

@Tyler, further proof you are a Chevrolet hater. What Chevy guy in their right mind doesn't care if the Dodge is better looking than the Chevrolet? None that I know. You sir are a GMC psychopath plain and true. I don't like GMC nor anything it stands for. I've been convinced of the opinion that GMC has and continues to ruin Chevrolet trucks and for that GM will never get a dime of my money. They can kiss my ass. I'll buy a Ford.

Nice glovebox, nice column shifter, nice radio cluster. LOL! For 1995. Can we please have our money back now? You obviously don't know how to spend it.

GMC has and continues to ruin Chevrolet trucks

@Truckinman, where have you been? The GMC name has been taking a dump all over Chevy since the late 1990's. Ever heard of Denali? Wonder why the Silverado is so nasty looking now and the Sierra isn't? It's no coincidence that this Silverado interior is third rate. They'll make the Sierra really nice, watch and see. Screw em. I'm to the point that the mere mention of GM makes me want to puke.

Column shifters? Ha Ha. This dash is worse than my 96 Dakota sitting on the side of my garage. Ya, Dodge has nothing to fear that's for sure. Chevy sucks now. I can now see why Chevy guys hate GM. I would too! lol

Chevy guys need to leave that pathetic corporation and join Mopar. They suffer from battered wife syndrome...

I gotta be honest, I was expecting a lot better. I'll wait to see the finished product but this doesn't look very promising. For the first time in my life I may switch over to Ford's. I've just waited for too long for Chevy to get it together. I'm not getting any younger. Life's just to short to drive a truck with an interior such as this. I'd say it's good at best. That's not good enough anymore.

This is only the WT work truck trim interior. Looks better than fords XL. Can't wait to see the LT or LTZ interior.

It's definitely not an LTZ interior with that bench seat. It's probably an LS or low optioned LT. Not a loaded LT or LTZ.

With that said, it's kind of scary how much it reminds me of like a late 90's F150 interior, just with soft plastic rather than hard plastic. The similarities in the center stack are uncanny.

Look closely. It looks like the entire dash is covered in thick padding.

The only spots not covered are the center stack and dash.

There is no way Chevy comes out with a truck that looks like this. That is padding or covering. If it isn't, then shame on them.

They suffer from battered wife syndrome...

-Ain't that the truth. For once I agree with a Mopar guy. Why Chevy guys even defend GM anymore is beyond my comprehension. Battered Wife Syndrome needs a new picture on Wikipedia. A Chevy guy standing next to his crappy Silverado with a caption in GM's defense is perfect. Those guys are getting used and abused....

@Paul, I agree. I'm not feeling it at all myself. The design of the entire truck is very offputting to me. The thing is huge! What happened to the nice sized fullsizers of the 90's that Chevy had? These things are massive looking. I'm really not feeling those massive square wheel openings at all. It's very akward and just all wrong. Chevy needs to get new truck designers.

@Dave

It's not padding or a cover, that's the interior soft touch plastics themselves. You can see where it has the word "Airbag" embossed into it on the right hand side.

I wonder if the GM guys check out this website and the comments, if they read all the replies here thy should go back to the drawing tables with their tail between their legs.....LOL

Awww schucks!!!!

I'm sure they are reading them. The comments on GMI, the #1 Chevy and GM fan site, have been pretty much all negative, too.

This must be the work truck dash. I hope it gets better than this.

Not very impressive that's for sure. As mentioned, it may just be the base work truck dash. At least let's hope. In that top picture, it almost looks like something you'd see in the next generation Express cargo work van. Just basic and generic but it has the same style cargo van layout. If this is all Chevy has to offer though, I'm afraid they lost the game before it even began.

@Randy, This! Horrible outer design. This interior looks very bland to be sure. Not sure what's up with Chevy's interior-exterior designers anymore either. Very disappointing.

It just doesn't look like dog sh@t, It looks like hammered dog sh@t!!!

I can see the Howie Long ads now....Howie says, "This is nicest interior I have ever seen! Wow. There is a lot of storage in here." Then the engineer chimes in and says, "You know we don't give you a lot of that extra stuff people don't want. Our philosophy is a bit different. We give you the stuff that matters like dual glove boxes and fuel economy."

Total failure. Sorry Chevy guys. :(

That is just a padding with burn in "airbag" sign to remind testers that airbag is there and to throw everybody off. When this truck be unveiled and when you see that this dash looks different than on this picture, please shut up and never post here again!!!

I can honestly say, this is the best interior the Silverado has ever had, solely based on recent models.

@Dave, ROFLMAO!! Ain't that the truth!!! Howie is such an idiot. Cheap ass Chevy's. Ya, they don't want a nice interior. That's why everyone bitches about them. That was the most pathetic commercial run I've ever seen. I remember them bashing heated steering wheels and then they quietly added them. I remember them bashing man steps, then you see the cut out bumpers in the spy shots and on the Avalanche. These guys will make every excuse in the book to be Cheap Cheap Cheap!! And then they'll charge ya the same price for their cheap junk that Dodge and Ford do for high quality, loaded trucks.

Gary, I agree that is padding. It seems obvious or is it too obvious? The new Chevy will probably look good uncovered. Plus they are going with a bigger crewcab and a likely a flat load floor. Ram's interiors will soon be in 3rd place again.

Everybody is acting like this is the high end interior. This is the base interior. All the so called chevy fans acting like little girls crying! MAN UP!! I'm pretty damn sure that the other truck interiors will kick ass! and also take note that the truck in the interior pick is a different one fron the exterior pick. Look at the mirrors. Also the high end chevy's don't have a bench seat

some of you folks are realy pathetic, all it takes is to look at a picture, a picture of a pre-production dash board, in a reg cab, and all you have to do or say is junk this junk that, ugly this ugly that, nothing but neg. thoughts, I say give them a chance, have any of you gone down to a Chevy dealer lately? and seen the int. of the new Chevy's? the new Mallibu? or Crewzs? and open up the new Motor Trend and look at the 2013 Impala coming! even MT says great things about it! and they say the new Malibu is smoother and quiter than any of the comp. and gets better MPG to boot, didn't your mothers ever tell you if you can't say anything good don't say anything at all? I believe when we see the finished product, with the new D.I. engines and new tranny's and yes the new interiors when finnished and done will be a pleasant suprise for all, but there will allways be those few that no matter what is done will not be satisfied, they are blinded by hatred and ignorance. Open you minds, you might like it !!!! life would be so much better when you open you minds, and eyes to new things, I know this admin. and the last gave them lots of our $$$, you have to be completely stupid for them not to do well with it! give them a chance I know I will, only a fool would wish them to fail, and take all that $$$ with them, come on get you heads out of your a$$e$$ and get real!

That is one ugly bitch.

I have never purchased a truck based on the dashboard. Here's the criteria it has to meet for me: I can reach the radio dial and the AC/heater controls.

Some seem to think that this is the base model design. Okay, but the upscale interiors follow the same layout as the lower models. I'm not sure I like it from an ergonomic and aesthetic perspective. It could be a test mule display that won't be seen in the fnal truck. Who knows.
Fit and finish looks better.
I will reserve final judgement for when I get to sit in one.

Not real impressed, it has not lines to it, just a straight across flat dash with a glove box on one side. I suspect this is the lesser of the two interiors that GM is offering but that said the lower interior comes on everything but the LTZ at least currently and this won't cut it in mid level models.
