We shouldn't be surprised that General Motors is holding a few models back for a later release. In fact, it would not surprise us if they were holding back more cool technology that could push the half-ton pickups into a more advantageous position against the competition.

Gone are the days when manufacturers could invest all their time and money into one big bang and then sit back for five or six years. Nowadays they have to do something fairly dramatic every two or three years, like coming out with an all-new model, new powertrains or some other envelope-pushing technology. That certainly seems to be the pace Ford has set and others, if they're smart, will follow. Thankfully, it looks like both Chevy and GMC will doing something similar.

Our spy shooters have seen these two GM half-tons doing quite a bit of testing; they could make their debut later this year. Our first drive with the rest of the media will be in mid-May, so we'll know more then. For now, here's what spy shooter Chris Doane tells us:

GM is planning a pair of high-end luxury pickup trucks for the 2014 model year, and we've just spied both of them on their first test run.

The exterior design changes appear to be limited to the front end, with the Chevy Silverado High Country receiving a new front end. The High Country is also wearing large 20-inch chrome wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tires.

Additionally, the Chevy looks to have a badge above the Silverado badge; it's suspiciously similar to the shape of a mountain range, leaving little doubt that this is the High Country model.

It's much the same story with the Sierra Denali prototypes, with the traditional Denali-style grille easily seen. It is also wearing large wheels, with one featuring 20-inch chrome and the other sporting 21-inch gun-metal-gray wheels.

Another detail we can see on the Denali are the white-and-red Rancho shocks peeking out from under the truck. Not surprisingly, the Denali badges on the door and tailgate are covered with black tape.

Both GM trucks will feature upgraded interior materials and luxury appointments, and most likely be powered by the 5.3-liter V-8 engine that gets 23 mpg highway.

We'll expect these trucks to debut later this summer, possibly at the Texas State Fair.

I agree with some of you the new 5.3L is not a joke that low end torque is nasty. I still think in a pickup (and only in a pickup) the new 5.3L is better than the 5.0L Coyote. This V8 looks it has a set.

Kole what about the 5 billion dollars that ford borrowed for the government ?????

FordTrucksone: you may, and yes a lot of others do, and I also like round wheel openings, BUT it is all in the eye of the beholder, and personal preference, and as far as I am concerned, it is a non issue with me, and would be the last thing that would "sell " me or not, and like I said, there are plenty of other vehicles out their with if not square, they have a flat top and a tear drop shape, and there are a lot of Fords models like thatm matter of fact, look at all their models, and round wheel openings are in the minority in the line of vehicles, if anything it adds style, round is boring, but then again a personal preference. Yhe tere are the millions of Chevy/GMC trucks sold over the yrs, that proves beyond a doubt, that some of us like that style.

As an automotive tech for the last 26 years, ihave seen lots of trucks come in my bays. The GM trucks are very reliable and as durable as any other truck. In fact the new HD GM trucks have been more trouble free than the Ford or Ram trucks of late. I have owned all brands for towing hay trailers and working our ranch, the GM trucks have always been impressive.
Sounds like most of the posters buy a truck for looks, i like to purchase a truck for function and reliability, long before i consider how pretty it looks in the field.

I knew you would show up to troll eventually Frank. You are this blogs #1 TROLL, and I hereby nominate you for the first ever PUTC Blog TROLL OF THE MONTH. Congrats on this dubious honor, you deserve it.

@Sandman4x4, speaking for myself, it's those monster fender flares Chevy sticks on their trucks now that make them look really bad to me. They had really boxy squares in the 70's an 80's yet made it look good, Even those 90's trucks looked fantastic with the softer square shapes. Your Tahoes have those same shapes and looks reaaly good. The Silverado on the other hand is a disaster. It's those monster flares built into the metal that makes them look so bad now. And on the current model, the flares don't even match in shape or size, You guys need to fire whoever has been designing your Chevy trucks the last 10 years or so. I'm not a Chevy hater but it's pretty hard not to laugh at your truck designs since the late 90's-early 2000's. Your 67-72's were still the best!

Ole SuperPro Mike = FordTrucks1, TerryHoath, etc, etc, etc.

Ole SuperPro Mike = FordTrucks1,

@Whoever, not me bud. Sorry. I'm a pretty strong Chevrolet backer here. And while it's true I don't think the Chevy trucks as of late look all that great, that's not all that uncommon. And I really don't care much. I stated I'd love that new Chevrolet Smallblock in my new Atlas. Move on son.

@TROLL,

You are just mad because I don't agree and worship your BRAND!!

Oh Frankie you brute. No need to be so hostile!! Worship my brand, huh? There are plenty of Ford fans here that think you are a troll, just like the ones in the forum. I'm just calling a spade a spade, quite frankly, Frankie. :)

^^^GO AWAY MICHIGAN BOB, LMFAO! You can't disguise your ignorance.

I really don't care what you have to say, BE A MAN AND POST UNDER YOUR NAME, OH WAIT YOU CAN'T BECAUSE YOUR A LITTLE BITCH!!!

Michigan Bob huh? You're the Michigan Bob of the Ford bloggers on this site. LOL

You never answered my question about trolling the forum. I used to see you in there on a regular basis trolling and making rude comments to fellow members, but not at all in quite a while. Seems like people in there couldn't stand your arrogance either. LOL

@TROLL,

I do not troll the forums. You do know their are more than one Frank in this World with an F-250. Don't be f'ken stupid.

Yeah, there's tons of people on PUTC that go by the name Frank and drive a '99 F-250 while acting like a pr!ck towards everyone that does not drive a Ford or think exactly like he does. It's funny that you deny being this person. You post exactly like him and come up with the same type of mindless garbage. LOL Have a nice day Frank F-250!

The question rose up a month ago when it was asked" Is GM Pinching Pennies Again?", I was very motivated to see what the Denali version of the Sierra was going to look like, but it looks no different form the rest of the line up, at least GM could have placed the Smoked Tailights on that truck like they did on the 2007-2013 line up, and not make it look light a Silverado with a GMC Badge on the tailgate. This is enoguh to make you want to submitt your own ideas in drawing either by mail or by internet as to what they need to do to fix this issue.
Though I'm still loyal to what GM has to offer, the excitment level from me is not surging like it should be.

Wow, these boards have really gone to sh!t. Where the hell is the moderator? This site and its boards are really becoming irrelevant.
