Drive-In Diners Motor into 21st Century

As baby boomers, my husband and I have fond childhood memories of family road trips that included stops at drive-in diners that dotted the nation's byways in the '50s and '60s. So we were delighted to discover Red's Root Beer during a recent vacation near Paw Paw, Mich.

A by-product of the nation's love affair with cars, drive-in diners surfaced in the 1920s, survived the Great Depression and thrived afterward because of their "good cheap food and fun," writes artist Don Sawyer, who captures this slice of Americana on canvas, on

The popularity of drive-in diners peaked in the 1930s and '40s, falling victim to the rise of fast-food giants in the 1960s and '70s. Like drive-in movie theaters, drive-in diners seemed to be headed down the road to extinction.

However, the once-ubiquitous drive-in diner may be poised to pull a U-turn thanks to TV shows like the Food Network's "Drive-ins, Diners and Dives" and the Travel Channel's "Man v. Food," and chains like Sonic Drive-In, Ruby's Diner and A&W.


Sonic — which got its start in Shawnee, Okla., as the Top Hat Drive-in in 1953 — is perhaps the most visible evidence of the drive-in diner's staying power. Today it lays claim to more than 3,500 drive-ins spread across the U.S. Customers use curbside speakers to place their orders, which are delivered by carhops (in some locations they do so on roller skates); it's this concept that gave birth to the Top Hat's slogan, "Service with the Speed of Sound," and name change to Sonic in 1959. Ruby's Diner, which also features skating carhops at some restaurants, opened in California in 1980 and now has locations in six states.

But it's the independently owned drive-ins — like Superdawg in Chicago (pictured), Red's Root Beer in Michigan, Mel's Drive-in in California ("American Graffiti" was filmed at the original San Francisco location) and the Parkette in Lexington, Ky. — that steal our hearts.

Superdawg has been a Chicago mainstay since it opened in 1948; it still operates in its original city location and is owned by the same family, which opened a second location in suburban Wheeling in 2010. Both restaurants are topped by two 12-foot-tall flirtatious hot dogs representing founders Maurie and Flaurie Berman.


"When we started there were a lot of drive-ins because there wasn't McDonald's, there weren't drive-throughs, and at the time there was not air conditioning," said Don Drucker, Superdawg's operations manager. "Air conditioning was just coming around. So people would be out … in their car and get a cool breeze that way. They'd have a destination; they would meet people at the drive-in."

Drucker credits Superdawg's longevity to providing a good product — its signature sandwich is the Superdawg, consisting of the family-recipe hot dog accompanied by fresh-cut crinkle fries — and being open year-round (each location houses a small dining room).

"People always say to us, 'It's such a throwback; it's such nostalgia,' " he laughed. "Our comment to that is, 'We're not really nostalgia; we're authentic. We were here in '48.' "

Opened in 2010 by retired factory worker Tim "Red" Knauss and his wife, Red's Root Beer in Paw Paw serves made-on-the-premises root beer in frosty mugs while music from the '50s filters into vehicles from speakers in the canopy. Knauss personally greets each carload of diners and checks back to see if they're enjoying the food; stay long enough and your conversation will be punctuated by fans honking their horns and waving as they drive by. Like many of its brethren, Red's hosts classic car shows during warm-weather months and is closed during the coldest months.


So if you're heading out on a road trip, make a meal at a drive-in diner part of the itinerary. As Jim Heimann writes in "Car Hops and Curb Service": "The glory years of the drive-in may have vanished but with a little luck and a lot of imagination it's still possible to experience what was once the birthright of every kid and family with a car."

Nice. i always thought that drivethrus began durig the 50s.

Don't forget, the old Big Boy restaurants also used to be drive-ins. There's still a few Big Boys, but they all lost their canopies decades ago.

Here in NM, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Sonic; it has been that way since I moved here ~20 years ago. I actually think that they are much more car friendly than pickup friendly--they try to cram a bunch of "spaces" in the parking lot and they are pretty narrow. Not to mention, the menu an buttons are place too low to reach from a pickup.

Love the drive ins. Back when America and American cars and trucks were the real deal. Sonic however sucks. Their food is awful. The A&W's are just as bad if not worse now. Nothing like they were years back. Those are the only 2 chains left that I know of like this. I might have to visit this guys place.

Sonic sucks for food. I ordered some chicket strips and it was all dried up breading with no chicken.

My dad meet my mom at an A&W in lancaster ca. That was his favorite fast food. They served you in your car. He used to take me there before he passed in 1978.

I remember as a young boy in the late 50's the drive-ins. The custom made hot rods, 57 Chevys, 49-early 50s Mercs and Fords. One of the drive-ins ended up closing because of hoods that made it unsafe to go there. One time for Halloween some of the hoods drug in a dead horse--that made the papers. My older brother hung out with a group of guys crusing around in a 50 white Ford convertible doing mischief.

Back where I grew up, in Rhode Island, there were, 2 A&W Root Beer joints, one is on rt 44 the other was on rt 3 in W. Warwick, but that one is gone, they were a cool spot to go and hang out, and show off your wheels, have a bite to eat, and just be young and have a good time.

HEMI V8 was conceived at an A&W Root Beer.

Was Hemi V-8 part of a root beer float, but he is fearful of the fryer because he might combust into flames. Root beer floats are good fore extinguishing fires.
