Fiat Fully Acquires VM Motori

According to Automotive News, Fiat Group has finalized its acquisition of diesel engine maker VM Motori, purchasing the remaining half from General Motors for $47.1 million. Fiat originally purchased half of the company in 2010; this purchase gives the Italian auto giant full control of the diesel engine maker and the potential to produce even more 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesels (dubbed EcoDiesel) that are now powertrain options for both the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee (currently on sale) and Ram 1500 pickup truck (due in showrooms in early 2014).

VM Motori specializes in the production of advanced diesel engines, annually producing approximately 90,000 engines that are used in automotive, marine, industrial and other applications.

Fiat's U.S. partner, Chrysler, is waiting to see if the turbo-diesel engine options catch on with U.S. buyers to determine if it will offer diesel power options in more vehicles across its brands. We fully expect the take rates for the first year to be significant (maybe as much as 15 percent), but whether or not U.S. fleet or personal truck buyers will continue to think the diesel option makes sense will largely depend on option pricing the cost of gasoline per gallon.

This comment is to all of the people surmising on what a small diesel pickup will do under load, up a hill, etc.

I own a small diesel, here are its characteristics;

1. At low speeds under 40mph it is slower than a gas engine. Once my speed is up and above 60 mph it accelerates quite surprisingly well.

2. Under load and/or towing it isn't any 'slower' than a V8 towing a similar load. If you require 400ftlb of torque to turn the crankshaft the 400ftlb doesn't matter if your making 200hp or 400hp. So, what I'm saying is the 400ftlb is how mcuh effort is required.

3. Because of a diesel's characteristics they get much better low-medium torque, better than a V8. So you seem to be a gear or two lower all of the time. I rarely rev beyond 2 500 to 3 000 rpm to accelerate.

4. I have yet to be at a set of light where people do 0-60 times quicker than 15 seconds. Even then that is flying.

5. To the guys comparing FE costs. If that is a significant factor why do people buy mid to high end V8 dual cab pickups? Modern V6 engines are more than capable to do what most any pickup owner would want.

Actually a 4 cylinder gas Frontier will do what most any pickup owner wants. Even a Corolla with a trailer will do what most pickup owners want.

So to you FE vs vehicle guys look at the market, or do you drive a Corolla with a trailer. Or are you just making trolling comments?

@Big Al, all good. However, if given the choice I think most truck owners in my part of the world want a truck with lots of smooth power and flexible towing capacity.

If this is all about FE, let's focus on getting politicians to remove the barriers to cheap fuel.

They are very smooth. That's why many are buying them here. The smoothness of just driving with heaps of torque is fantastic.

These small diesels have and are replacing Commodores, Falcons etc here. They are viable alternatives.

In 2004 Holden and Ford sold the most utes ever, including V8s, now they are closing down. The new diesels are quite surprising. We are getting them in anything and everything.

Diesel also is much more expensive than gas here, like in the States.

I became a diesel convert in 97. Prior to that I was a gas person.

Diesel will not suit everyone's needs. But from a cost perspective if you are going out to spend $40k on a truck you will see what you like and suits you needs.

If you want to tow, which realistically not many do or if they do it's only a few thousand pounds, diesel does the job very well.

I think this is a new opportunity for many in the US to experience, the ability to sample a diesel when making a purchasing decision.

They will get more popular, especially when cheaper 4 cylinder diesels come in your pickups.

I'm looking forward to what your pickup market is in 5 years, nothing like it is now.
