Ram EcoDiesel Makes Ward's 2015 10 Best Engines List, Again
Posted by Mark Williams | December 15, 2014
For the second year in a row, WardsAuto has named Ram's 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine to its 10 Best Engines list, making it the only light- or heavy-duty engine entry. However, the 6.2-liter Corvette Stingray engine is on the list again, and it shares many construction elements with the 6.2-liter V-8 motor available for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks.
Other engines that made the 2015 list include Ford's three-cylinder Fiesta motor, Volvo's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and BMW's electric i3 as well as a fuel-cell entry from Hyundai.

PUTC; what is that, a photo of a noise cover? You could at least find a photo of the actual engine. You're getting really lazy.
"However, the 6.2-liter Corvette Stingray engine is on the list again, and it shares many construction elements with the 6.2-liter V-8 motor available for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks"
Except for the different cams, heads, and the intake manifold for starters...
Then you will just complain that all you can see are the block and the heads, and that you want to see the pistons, valves, crankshaft etc. Articles usually use stock images.
Congrats to FCA, it is a great engine. I suspect the next generation Wrangler will have it too, along with the ZF 8 speed, and aluminum body.
Hopefully Chrysler can give the ecoboost a power bump within a year or two. And can boost production capacity.
Bout like the 5.7 hemi shares the same engine family as the hellcat which is also on the list and an actual Chrysler engine. Furthermore the 6.2 mentioned on the list from gm is the lt4 z06 engine, not the stingray lt1. Guess which 376 C.I. 6.2L super charged puts out more power and without direct injection?
^ comparing hellcat to lt-4.
@ Axle: The 'ecoboost' is a ford gasser,Ram has the 'ecoDIESEL'...
Oh it was the stingray lt-1. I apologize for my ignorance.
Where is the award for the new 2.7 Eco-Boost in the 2015 F-150?
That's NOT fair!
That engine is innovative cause of the mixed cast iron and aluminum block!
Look at the way Ford squeezed out the power from that engine! Its more powerful than the 5.7 Hemi and its LESS than half the size!
And with all that performance it still gets the best gas mileage!
THATS NOT FAIR !
Congrats to VM Motori. Looks like GM's development money was put to good use. This engine was meant for Cadillac.
@tom#3, life is not fare get used to it I have.
@Lou in BC: maybe that's why GM always has their hand out, or barely gets by. Maybe they should have used it for a Cadilac? Does Cadillac even have a car that'll get 30 some miles to the gallon?
Oh well, now that GM doesn't own any more of VM Motori, they will be paying for those 2.8 L diesel engines that they want to put in that poor Colorado and Canyon.
Pretty sure the Jeep Lberty was lighter then a Chevy Colorado and a GMC Canyon, and it was only good for about 25 or 26 miles to the gallon. So I'd be kind of surprised if GM could get 26 or even 27 out of one and a 2 wheel drive truck.
But, there will be bumpkins that buy them because they'll fit in
the garage, or because they will fit on some trail (that they don't really need to be on, they just want to go playing around on).
@TRX-4 Tom - GM already has their own diesel for the Colorado. An inline 4.
You do realize that most corporations are global and have products beyond continental USA?
Ward's has pretty much shown its irrelevancy with that list.
A fuel cell & electric motor are NOT engines.
This diesel is crap compared to what in on the European market. (inferior fuel system, simple turbocharger)
But it is the only light duty truck diesel.
The WRX is laggy, unresponsive.
The Hellcat is pointless. A giant IHI Lysholm supercharger on a simplistic hemi.
BMW b38 engine of the Mini has lackadaisical performance.
The VW engine lacks the most important feature the European market gets: combination PORT and direct injection.
The Ford 'ecoboost' 1 liter 3 cylinder is inoffensive but unexceptional.
The Corvette LT1 is like the world's most sophisticated anvil.
The Volvo 2.0 turbo is no better than the standard Audi 2.0.
@ TRX-4 Tom: I had a 2006 Jeep Liberty Limited with the VM Motori 2.8L CRD.Routinely we got over 31mpg and that was with the MB 5spd auto.Weight for the vehicle was around 4500lbs,maybe a bit more, and yes it was a 4x4.We live in a mountain state and the power from that 2.8 was extremely good.6% and better grades are normal where I live.
So TRX-4 doesn't like diesels, and probably only likes Toyota... just a guess. The 2.8L that will be put into the Colorado is a GM built Duramax that is used worldwide. Yes I'm sure it will be retuned version but is not produced by VM, Using similar advantages of Diesel over Gas, I expect the 2wd Colorado to get around 29-30 mpg on the highway. As a daily driver of a 2011 HD Diesel, I will tell you that I routinely average 18-19 in mixed driving, and have gotten as high as 24 on the highway with a 7,500 lb truck. So the magical 30 mpg is easily achievable. Also GM has a 4.5l and a 2.5l diesels that are either sold worldwide, or in their portfolio.
So the real question is if Toyota picks up the 5.0l Cummins will the Toyota faithful opinion change.
As to the market for midsize, I'm definitely looking into one since I'm normally not pulling my 5th wheel, or hauling a heavy load, so it would be a good alternate daily driver, however would not replace the HD.
ALEX: Point of correction. The 2.8 I4 Duramax is also built by VM Motori. This is not an Isuzu motor like the 6.6 V8. The baby Duramax has been around for several years in the South African market Trailblazer. I recently had the chance to drive one. Awesome engine for diesel lovers. Its loud, responsive, and torquey. Let's all do our best to present facts.
Its based off of a VM Motori design, and is built under license by GM. The 3.0L V6 used in the Ram would have been a better choice to put into the Colorado and Canyon.

Yes Lou, I realize that. The funny thing is, did you just now realize that yourself? How many times have you tried to slam Ram for a made Mexico engine (Hemi) or Italy (the subject of this story) or a transmission initially bought out of Germany, (the 8 speed ZF for Chrysler) but now mostly made in Indiana.
Come to think of it, that Ford 6 speed is ZF designed, right?
I believe I had to remind you Chrysler exports a lot more now a days. Like Europe and Australia, Al won't admitt it tho.
The VM Motori having another "win" isn't surprising, it's one of the better engines around the world.
Lou, is correct the engine was initially designed for Caddy and other prestige vehicles. It's an expensive engine choice for the Ram, but it works and works very well.
@TRX-4 Tom - most Ram fans on this site conveniently forget about the rest of the world. Ram is part of the Fiat Chrysler group. A global company that is NOT a USA based company. Ford and GM are USA based and function globally.
Borders mean less and less to companies. They go with parts and labour that yield the most profits.
The Chrysler Group has a new name. The company is now officially known as FCA US LLC which aligns the name with parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or FCA for short.
@ToxicSludge - FCA: Head office - Netherlands, tax centre - Great Britain, stock exchange - New York.
Sergio Marchionne started out life as a tax accountant. That is why he chose those spots.

I agree after driving an Eco Diesel at this years L.A. auto show I was impressed.
Test drove a 2015 Power Wagon this week. Truck rode smooth and has plenty of power when merging on the freeway. Ram has something for everyone.

"A press release noted, “FCA US employs more than 77,000 employees worldwide, with 96% of its workforce based in North America.”

I'm waiting on either the Colorado diesel which will be coming out next year,or the all new diesel Frontier which should be out around the same time.Since I am not brand loyal, either would do the job for me.Diesel fuel here in my area is $3.05.9 while 87 octane is $2.77.9.The diesel price is acceptable for me,so I just don't worry about that. For my needs,a small diesel truck will serve me very well.It even cost more to maintain, and again,I have no problem with that either. What all of you diesel haters should remember is,the diesel is an option, and NOT mandatory for you to buy. Those of us who have had diesels before, and still want one in a smaller pkg will now have it available to us.
I'm not sure if the A630 is the same as the 2.9L V6 engine that Cadillac announced in 2007, perhaps it was mostly the same, but some changes were made, including the displacement. I think FCA should have used the 270/440 tune that's available in Europe, but obviously the US has different emissions standards.
Todays price at my local 76 station for diesel: $2.99.9.I'm loving this...
@Toxic Sludge
not sure that I agree with all of your points but I'll spot you this one: Modern diesel engines will change people's minds once they try one.
Not everyone's budget, or circumstances, will accept diesel but the engines that started showing up 8-10 years ago are a far cry from the ones that were around when I was a kid.
I am looking at the bigger picture,to be sure. For my needs a diesel will fit the bill 100% better then a gasser will.I live in a mountain state and pulling a small camper with the diesel is a whole lot better then a slightly larger gas engine.I'm in my mid 60's and this ain't my first rodeo,or diesel,or truck.I know what works best for me.Others may disagree and that's fine, but for me these new diesels are well worth the extra cost, unless of course someone wants to buy me a new truck and miracle it to me.Until then,I will get a small diesel and be very happy with it.
It´s interesting to hear that the current RAM 1500 engine from VM Motori will be upgraded from 275 hp to a stunning 340 hp.
Alfa is also working with Fiat Chrysler’s subsidiary, VM Motori, on a new version of the 3.0-liter V-6 diesel unit currently offered on some Jeep and Maserati models. The top Alfa version will have its output increased to 340 hp from 275 hp. A 275-hp unit will also be offered. In the RAM 1500 today the mill is delivering 240 hp. 100 hp more will be stunning.

The 240hp/420lb ft is used in other vehicles and other publications rave about it. Now usually those vehicles are about4,500lbs or less. Ram 1500 may need to go on a diet for performance and payload to be right on the ED. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2014-audi-a6-tdi-diesel-test-review.
@Willy - FCA is going to add turbo's and IIRC direct injection to the Pentastar.
I wonder what the anti-ecoboost Rambo's will have to say then?????

Won't effect any of my purchases from Ram. My new truck has a class leading 392 Hemi. lol
@HEMI V8 - I wasn't talking about your purchase decisions but your anti-Ford commentary.
But on the subject of your purchase decisions - you intend to buy a truck made in a foreign country from a foreign owned company.
All of your pro-union and pro - USA ideology don't seem to effect your purchase decisions either.
Great rivalries here... interesting to note though that many Ram EcoDiesel owners are having lots of emission problems with their trucks...sadly...maybe Ram brought it to market too soon. And its not really fair to compare the 2.7 EcoBoost to the Ecodiesel cuz there is no comparison other than they both have cylinders with turbochargers. The EcoBoost is a nice try at efficiency/power, but once you put your foot into the throttle in normal everyday driving your gas mileage is going to go in the toilet, it's a market gimmick by Ford and the EPA #s are a joke, especially if compared to the EcoDiesel...there is no comparison. The best news here is that diesel engines are getting a good shot in the arm in the United States due to Ram's gutsy move to bring a diesel to market... Glad to see the Colorado and Canyon will see the DuraMax diesels shortly and that other manufacturers are finally starting to see the diesel as a great alternative for light duty trucks. it will be interesting to see how long it takes forward to jump on board.
