'Top Gear' Experts Attempt to Drive Pickups
Oh, this should be good (read that with a heavy dose of sarcasm).
In an upcoming episode of the BBC America's "Top Gear," not only do we have Brits driving full-size pickup trucks up a snowy Canadian Rockies' mountaintop where we can't see any trail markers, but they've pitted a 2014 600-horsepower Hennessey Ford F-150 VelociRaptor against a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Duramax turbo-diesel. We don't know all the details, but suffice it to say that these pickups were not used within their normative capability parameters. We can't wait to see which one wins this classic confrontation: Ford or Chevy.
And why no Ram Power Wagon or Toyota Tundra TRD Pro?
In any case, catch it at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time March 2 on BBC America. To give you a taste of what to expect, we share this trailer from the show.

HAHAHA!!! I love TopGear but I wish they would have gotten a little guidance on comparable trucks to test. I can't wait to see it.
Sweet!
Top Gear is first and foremost entertainment. Very good entertainment, I might add.
It's very orchestrated in all aspects of filming to give pre-determined results, in other words, scripted.
As for what pickups are used? Who cares, do you care what vehicles are used in a movie? Consider Top Gear the same.
But, it will be worth watching, as entertainment.
Ought to be good. Howsoever....
Seems every time Jeremy Clarkson comes to America do a show, he goes on and on about our obesity and cheeseburgers. Even though he is sporting a an ever increasing pouch.
So shape up Jeremy or quite obsessing.

More Middle Age Spread. Best show they have ever done is the building of fairly large Rocket and launching it, that was spectacular
This has got to be Richard Hammond's idea. He gets US.
Clarkson is a dik with ears. Can't see how anyone could bear to watch him.
Looks like good entertainment. This is the kind of stuff i'd like to see from pickuptrucks.com Interesting tests in interesting venues with interesting stories.
@Big Al - Yes, I do understand what you are saying about the brands/pickups used and really I don't care, but normally TopGear is a little better at coming up with more similar/comparable vehicles than what they have for this. That said, it will still be an awesome show and I will be watching it without a doubt!
@ToBeHonest,
Did you ever consider the fact that Top Gear might of tried to gain access to a more diverse range of vehicles.
Or, did you consider the manufacturers might be at fault here and not Top Gear.
Just look at what vehicle access is given to most tests/reviews, they are generally top of the line vehicles.
Why don't manufacturers ever just provide what is asked for?
I do know in Australia Toyota shies away from providing one of their diesels in comparisons and generally can only find a V6 gas engine.
Why? Because Toyota don't have a good diesel, so they create a chalk and cheese comparison.
It's all marketing, even when the tester/reviewer is attempting to write an unbiased article.
As an aside, my comment wasn't directed at you.
If I remember right the American Top Gear did do a test of old 4x4's from the big three in Alaska and the Chevy won that one. And they did beat them to death.
Im along time top gear uk fan. Who doesn't like seeing Clarkson repeatedly roll the reliant robin. Or the toybota. The mighty hilux, sports trains awesome road trips and jokes about every car maker and their home country. Very entertaining. As a ford raptor owner I finally get to see what clarkson thinks of what I drive though I already know he doesn't hate it per his post in the uk. http://www.driving.co.uk/car-reviews/the-clarkson-review-hennessey-velociraptor-600-2014/
He thinks it's to big and doesn't like solid rear axel but gave it props for ride and off road capabilities.
They made a comment on last weeks show how they cannot compare the Porsche 918 the Ferrari la Ferrari and McClaren p1. Porsche said have at it on top gears track McClaren said not on top gears track , which is their test track as well as it would favor the Porsche. Ferrari said it had to be a factory preped car McClaren said the cars had to be production cars. Ferrari said if any private Ferrari owners lent their cars to Top gear they would be black listed by Ferrari. That just shows how the manufacture can be with their cars. Apparently Ferrari is the worst offender that they will tune a car for exactly where it will be driven so the cars perform differently then what is given to consumers. Top gear is also BBC which is funded by the British people so they can get away with calling a particular car bad.
psssfttt!
I have been driving off road since I was a kid.
I used to rob my daddys truck and trash it off road
I grew up thru peer pressure by off roading cause everybody else did it and I didn't want to look like a girlly man!
When I watch this on TV it looks like rookie training to me!
I climbed and came down vertical hills, crossed raging rivers, climbed mountains of all rocks with drop off cliffs.
Most so called off road experts would be AFRAID to go where I go.
Its standard operating procedure around my neck of the woods cause everybody off road their 4x4 trucks and jeeps, guys with jeeps use their winch to get to extreme places nobody else could go.
I have a hill so steep when you're standing on top you can't see the bottom and I take my truck down it !
You would turn into mush if you seen that!
So watching this on TV doesn't excite me cause I know I could do BETTER
The secret of extreme off roading is the feeling you're going to die doing it, if it doesn't have that level of excitement its worthless!
This has little to do with this article, if I don't put this link in now I'll forget where it was.
It's a 3D simulation of the 2 stage Holset turbo for the up and coming Cummins XD Nissan.
It's worth a look for the tech heads.

OMG Tom#3 you're so cool!!! You're such a daredevil! Tell us more about how amazing you are!
@Tom#3 this hasn't aired yet you are judging an hour long program on a 22 second trailer
Tom3, I don't think people watch Top Gear, not because they think watching a show is comparable to driving, but because it's entertaining. If they stuck to car reviews, I probably wouldn't watch it. I have off-road time on my Polaris or in my Jeep, Top Gear is for my entertainment time. It's like saying you won't watch Taken because you can shoot a real gun. Now video game nerds on the other hand, do talk about their driving experiences as if they were real, which is pretty sad.
Just watched it, it was entertaining as always
@Peter - you are referring to Top Gear USA episode where the challenge was to buy 3 trucks sight unseen from Craig's List and then off-road them. The Chevy was supposed to have had the infamous diesel V8. It came with a 350 gasser since those diesels were notoriously unreliable.
@Tom#3 - you say you hardcore off road your F150................
okay.
A few questions..........
1. What model and drivetrain options?
2. Tires
3. Rear end gearing and what kind of differential i.e. e-locker or mechanical.
4. What kind of conditions have you driven in?
Just watched the Episode, they mention at the end that the chevy didn't make it lost a drive shaft.
Good thing about these guys...they really won't be trash talking anyone truck, they just show what fun they can have...good job!!!
I found the episode surprising and not. Im not surprised that Clarkson took a hopped up version of the baddestassed half ton ever made. I was shocked to see May in a new Duramax 3/4ton. I was shocked that the GM didn't even make it and that Ford made it on 3 tires. I honestly would have thought that if any truck were to have mechanical issues it would have been the made for play Raptor half ton with 200 more HP than its drive train was designed to handle being thrashed by a maniac as opposed to the 3/4 ton made for work Chevy with stock diesel driven by CPT Slow. As a Ford fan I loved the outcome but I definitely didn't see it coming that way especially if you had told me there would be a break down.
Clarkson has repeatedly said that pickups are just stupid. Unless you are a contractor, farmer, or have to drive one of those awful apple carts for work, "why would you?". Have any of you actually driven an C-class AMG, BMW Ms, or latest pony cars from Ford and Chev? You are missing out in your Tonka trucks.

Why would you be surprised a big heavy diesel 3/4-ton truck rolling on basic AT tires didn't make it up a steep snowy mountain trail driven by some Brit that has obviously never driven a real truck before?
