February's Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Pickups

Chevy Colorado side II

The newest pickup trucks in the marketplace are picking up momentum as they continue their strong sales push into 2015. In fact, more than half of all pickups in the top 10 for February are midsize pickups, including the almost-ancient Toyota Tacoma. Of course, there is a new 2016 Toyota Tacoma just around the corner, but you have to give credit to Toyota dealerships — they've figured out how to use all the attention about a new model and new competitors to their advantage.

We've analyzed our sales information to create our fastest- and slowest-sellers lists. The fastest-selling pickups have a threshold of more than 75 units sold in February (to exclude special-package and low-volume models); we remove all thresholds when compiling our slowest-sellers list. The number following each model listed is the average number of days that configuration typically sits on a dealer lot before it is bought.

Astute readers will recognize that the top three or four models in the slowest-sellers list will probably be the vehicles where dealerships will be more likely to aggressively negotiate a final sale price. It's also worth noting that things are going pretty well for dealerships when their slowest-sellers are sitting on the lot for only two or three months. In some ways, it's a good time to be a new pickup buyer and seller.

Do we have data yet on how long a RAM Ecodiesel sits ??

yeah, I've heard dealers, at least locally, that they went off the lot pretty quick. But, that was early on when there wasn't a huge supply. It seems Ram doesn't sit very long and doesn't go too quick off the lot. I've rarely seen it on this list. The only one i remember seeing was a Ram 2500 on the quick list.

come to think of it, it would be nice to see a list of the fastest and slowest of each brand.

It makes sense to see extended cab HD's sitting on the lots the longest. It isn't a practical configuration for work or personal use. If a company doesn't need seating for 5-6 they'll go straight to a reg cab.
I see a large number of full bling HD's so it makes sense that the Denali HD has a quick turn around since it is a limited run pickup.
The most interesting piece of data are the Colorado sales figures. Turn around time coupled with the sales figures shows that the small truck market is not dead. It just needed some up to date products. Even Tacoma sales show that there is some life in the small truck market.

Whoopy Ding Dong, this tells us nothing other than how well dealers control their inventory. Many dealers use JUT or just in time others don't.

@Matt Please tell us how just-in-time works for a car dealer.

And yet again, the Sierra 2500 crew cab is both the fastest and slowest selling truck. Asinine. If you break out the Denali trim, you have to break out the platinum and Laramie longhorn trim levels too.

Stupid

So yesterday people were saying that F150 sales were down because the trucks are poorly received. Today we have data showing that they move very quickly, in less than 1/3 the time of a Silverado. This just illustrates that the F150 is still constrained by production.

Congrats to GM on the success of their new small trucks. I think that Ford was dead wrong when they concluded that the market for small trucks had gone away. For a lot of uses around the farm my old 84 Datsun is just more convenient than a full size truck and does a lot that a specialized vehicle like a John Deere gator can't do.

Ford has a lot of soul searching as regards that call. My feeling is the Global Ranger, in a watered down format, will appear in the US

Hey Walt, I agree with your first part, but the second--no.

I loved my old Rangers and S10s. My brother still has one. But the recent excitement about GM's midsize trucks may not last.

I hope I'm wrong, but while I think they did a great job with the product, only time will tell if there are enough people annoyed by the lack of new product (or ANY product--Ford) to replace the ten year old twins from Japan.

It amazes me that people still are loyal to Nissan and Toyota in the truck space.

Surprised the regular cabs weren't on the slow list. I love my RC and hope they stay off that list so that they'll be around for years to come.

Finally we get the real story, good job on GM's part, they were heading toward the toilet until they released the small trucks, going by this article, it seems as though the F150 is the only half ton truck really selling well, so cudos to Ford for that since they will continue to sell the F series and keep ahead of Gm's toy trucks

Colorado / Canyon comeback was a good idea.
F-150 will continue to see increased sales.

Dude, Denali is like Lariat not Platinum, not King Ranch or Laramie Longhorn. GM is not there yet.
