Consumer Reports Reliability Study Has Toyota Near Top
Posted by Mark Williams | October 24, 2015
Truckmakers ran the gamut in Consumer Reports latest Reliability Study, from Toyota coming in at the No. 2 spot to Ram nearly coming in last out of 28 automakers. The annual study is drawn from Consumer Reports' substantial subscriber base, reported to include more than 740,000 vehicles.
Among pickup truck manufacturers — most of which offer a full line of SUVs, crossovers and automobiles that also influence standings — here's how they ranked:
2. Toyota
8. Honda
15. Nissan
17. Ford
19. GMC
20. Chevrolet
26. Ram

ROTFLMFAO!!!!
The WORST 3 are:
-Ram
-Jeep
-Fiat
Way to go! Capturing the WORST pickups, WORST suvs, and WORST cars!
Fiat sweeps the POS awards!
Ouch. The bottom 7 are:
22. Chrysler
23. Dodge
24. Infiniti
25. Cadillac
26. Ram
27. Jeep
28. Fiat
Only award they could win!!!!!!
I have a ram as a work truck and consumer reports is right on the money on reliability in trucks
Dodge always been junk!!
Like I keep saying, Ford Chevy and Ram suck. In that order from suck-least to suck-most with undeniable proof.
For all the bluster and chest thumping nothing here is really surprising. You can throw a ton of excrement against the wall about toyota and ISIS and all that other stuff but these findings are largely the same year in and year out.
Too bad FCA makes such bad stuff, I love the looks of RAM trucks, but it's all they got.
If you can't build something with good reliability, atleast make it look good for sales reasons.
740,000 vechiles studied. Hell ford or GM may sell more trucks than that this year. According to the tracking company Autodata, 16.5 million new autos hit the streets in 2014. 4.5% just isn't going to cut it for me. Lame reliability study per usual.
I guess the truth hurts--CR is the only outfit that doesn't take any advertising dollars.
My Tundra has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I wish Toyota made a car that was worth looking at. Lexus is too expensive and no manual transmissions to be found.
Well, that's one reason why Toyota hasn't jumped into the 17-speed transmission race.
Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports' director of auto testing says "We're seeing less major mechanical malfunctions. We're seeing less engine problems and fuel system problems and suspension problems. What we're seeing is more transmission problems, he said. Dual-clutch automatics, nine-speed units and even continuously variable automatic transmissions are prone to bugaboos.
FCA had several of the worst scores in CR's predicted reliability, which it bases on overall scores from up to three model years of survey data. Ram 2500 (153 percent worse), ranked at the bottom of its respective segment
In fairness, the JD Power study linked in the CR article is kinder to Chevy, GMC and RAM. Ford sucks and Fiat nails last place.

3. Toyota: 111 problems per 100 vehicles
10. Chevrolet: 123
11. GMC: 123
13. Nissan: 128
14. Ram: 134
20. Industry average: 147
26. Ford: 188
30. Jeep: 197
32. Fiat: 273
If you still use 10 yr old technology in your vehicles instead of more cutting edge tech like the new trannies, then yes, you should expect less problems, so no wonder Toyota ranks near the top. The other major issues in the study are based on infotainment systems and voice recognition systems where buyers had problems using them-read your freaking owners manuals for crying out loud !
Bat,
I bought a 2003 4runner in 2003. That was its first year all new with all new 5 speed auto and all new 4.0 v6. Yet it has been trouble free with 213k on it. Just gas and oil.
My wife fell in love with the new design ford escape a coupler years ago. She nagged and nagged till we bought one the first month it came out. 7 recalls later and a fire hazard and numerous minor issues we sold it this year after 2 years and a big hit in depreciation.
Consumer reports ranks Ram number one in likeability. All their engineers love thee ram. But they don't recommend it because when the surveys come in, its full of problems
Don't forget the company that used to own Chrysler. In 21st place Mercedes-Benz they're just as bad.
As complicated as new trucks are even the worst in this group are amazingly reliable compared to trucks from 15 years ago. I've had a few issues with my 2008 Tundra and would consider it the least reliable Toyota I have ever owned. Though in the larger picture it's still very reliable at 154K miles of pretty hard use.
@Albert74. Does your 4R have the then New V6 or then New 5speed? Because in 03, it didn't have both.
This survey kind of contradicts JD Power's survey http://canada.jdpower.com/press-releases/2015-vehicle-dependability-study
I think surveys need to be broke down to models to really make an impact on a purchase decision. The Ecoboost from Ford or Ecodiesel from Ram probably had more growing pains possibly contributing to negative numbers as a whole. They both make tried and true counterparts that can be overlooked.
I've owned many new trucks including a 5.7 Tundra and the highest quality trouble free truck so far is my 14 Silverado. My Tundra had several problems in less then 80,000 km. I'll be buying another new truck soon and not going to have this survey influence me decision.
Forgot to mention the Tundra is generally 10 years old with minor updates. It may be now tried and true because of it, but also lacking in technology especially in the fuel economy department. Not sure if the Tundra is going to get the cummins, but something has to be done because that 5.7 needs to put down the fuel bottle.
Ouch! I like most of the domestic brands, but they really need to do better to improve reliability. I'm not just saying this because of what I've read here, but because of what other sources (including some real people) have also said about them.
I would like to see all the ramturds now posting. I have been stating these facts for months now. No more #ram blablabla.
But to be fair, Where Ford and GM are compared to Toyota should be much better. Ford was in the top 5 a few years ago till they started pushing the envelope with technology as far as Sync. Sync alone has brought them down as it was a high failure rate. Around 30% for issues. But as I have found personally it was not a Sync issue but phone issue. I have had Bluetooth issues with many phones connecting to my Sync systems but also other aftermarket radios including the one in my class A motorhome. But customers think it is a Sync issue or infotainment issue. Hopefully Sync 3 will make things even better. Once Ford and GM start sticking with the same powertrains and refine them even more, they will raise the reliability scores again.
I also do not see the need for more than 6 speed transmissions. Once you get more than that you just start playing the downshift game. Similar to our GM 6.0L 6 speeds. Any slight variation in the gas pedal it will downshift. Very annoying. I prefer the old GM 4 speeds. At least the Ford 6 speed calibrations hold 6th much longer. Make for a better driving experience. But it is the FE game now and more speeds make for better numbers.

That survey includes all Ford vehicles. The biggest issues Ford has is with the Focus and Fiesta with the DPS6 auto transmission. Dual clutch transmissions are very problematic. They need to stay in high end sports cars where certain drivability is expected. Once Ford ditches the DPS6 they are buying and go with their own 6F15 transmission the focus and Fiesta will be a great vehicle. And Fords numbers will definitely go up.
I do not know of any Ford or Ram truck owners who subscribe to consumers report. So to me it is the liberals who do the voting, and we know all about them...
I had a Toyota and the cam shafts flattened. Found out it was a known issue with that engine, the oil returns were not drilled correctly so the cam's would not get oil at high rpm....they repaired the engine, 12k miles later same thing happened, I sold the piece of junk....

That is funny. Their subscriber list is huge and they send out surveys all the time for reliability reports and data on various products used. I have subscribed for years. They have not let me down yet.
Having a 2014 Ram, I would say its been a very quality product so far. Its only been back to the shop for 2 airbag recalls. Its super quiet and not a rattle on it.
"...most of which offer a full line of SUVs, crossovers and automobiles that also influence standings..."
That is the weakness of your quoting this survey.
We are exclusively interested in PICKUP TRUCKS: the SUV's CRV's don't just "influence" the results; they dominate them!
The 2nd thing is that Consumer Reports (CR), run by an ignorant bunch of New York liberals, knows very little about trucks, much less Jeeps. Take a look at this prejudicial and incompetent analysis of the Wrangler Unlimited, an SUV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkhZTINmgr8
CR is better off rating washing machines and CD players.
The 3rd thing is that the niggling little lack-of-perfection that CR applies to cars, are often irrelevant to truck buyers. Frankly, ALL of the "Big Three" American truck manufacturers make fine products, as evidenced by the fact that three out of five top-selling vehicles in the USA in 2013 were pickups.
Although I already have two, I see them as multi-decade investments; have experienced great reliability and ease-of-repair; and would buy any of them in a heartbeat.
And, by the way, the two I happen to have are Ram trucks, near the bottom of this supposedly significant CR reliability list!
============
NMGOM,
It really helps to understand how CR generates is reliability reports. The reviews are as I say, take it with a grain of salt. What they like and recommend as far as reviews goes the consumer needs to decide what works for them. The reliability reports is generated by the end users that subscribe. The subscribers receive multiple questionnaires through the year asking for problem areas of the vehicles they own. CR will also take in account for recalls and I believe that has no bearing on the reliability reporting. CR will take actual owner reports and then generate a reliability report comparing like vehicles in like class's. I have yet to see any other reporting agency do anything like this. They will report on vehicles up to 10 years old I believe. You can also see the problem areas of the vehicle you are interested in. If the majority of issues are with drivetrain then you may decided to look somewhere else. But if the problem is with the radio, then it may be an issue you can over look.
Interesting survey. My 1500 Ram's been perfect so far.
No complaints.
The Fiat-Chrysler brands (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat) finished at or near the bottom again.

BREAKING NEWS!
Ram quality, reliability dragged down by technology, new boss says
October 31, 2014 - 12:01 pm ET
http://www.autonews.com/article/20141031/OEM/141039968/ram-quality-reliability-dragged-down-by-technology-new-boss-says
DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Ram brand chief said cockpit technology was partly responsible for the marque’s ranking in the latest Consumer Report’s reliability study.
The brand ranked third-worst in the magazine's latest survey of reliable brands.
“The average age of a pickup truck is 11 years old,” Bob Hegbloom, who took over as Ram chief in August, told reporters Thursday at Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich.
“Eleven years ago, did anyone know what a Wi-Fi hotspot was? We have all this technology integrated into this system with an individual that may not have had a new vehicle in 10- plus years,” Hegbloom said. “There’s going to be some growing pains.”
Fiat Chrysler’s Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Ram brands finished in the bottom four of the rankings.
So what will the Ram Brand Chief blame it on this year. Since that report was last year.
Hahahahaha No wonder we've had to bailt these POS's out TWICE!
Ram is the worst of the worst!
GM and Ford aren't much better!
Toyota is tops as always! That's Texas Tough Toyota!
Yeah the cars and suvs could really skew the results for those only interested in pickups. Except for the Ram brand which only makes pickups.
Typically pickups will have more issues then a passenger car, that is one reason Ram is near the bottom since they only make trucks.
Just to add my 2-cents worth, my 2011 Tundra 5.7 has been trouble-free since the day I bought it, more than 80K miles ago.
I'm hoping my wife's 2015 Sequoia 5.7 will be just as reliable.
I had the rest. Now I drive the best.
@highdesertcat,
Demand for the new Hilux is quite amazing

In CR trucks are compared to trucks. SUVs are compared to SUVs, and Cars are compared to Cars. Even playing field with CR.
Robert Ryan, thx for the link. Interesting.
They also said buy the better trucks from Ram and G.M. NOT FORD lol
Robert Ryan,
I also recently read that the new Ranger will eclipse the Hilux in numbers.
@Highdesertcat - As you know, Toyota is hardly known for pushing the bleeding edge of technology. Quite the opposite. As you also know, hiccups in introducing new tech kills automaker's "Reliability" standings. Problems in the infotainment system especially.
Btw, guess which car was last to come with a tape deck? A Kia? Nope, the 2010 Lexus SC 430!
The Tundra is especially outdated though. Haven't seen a new one since '07. Fine for Tundra buyers like my mom, but the Tundra is hardly catering to traditional and demanding truck buyers. It's the most "Lifestyle" fullsize, except for the Titan. The Tundra is very limited and simplistic in terms of engines/configurations/options/packages/tech/etc.
FORD F150 King of Recalls!!!
That hegbloom is a piece of work. First he puts one of the ugliest grilles ever on the truck, then he makes excuses for poor quality ranking. He sounds like a politician. The 96 3500 I had was trouble free for 156000 miles in 1 1/2 years. Thanks bob eaton, thanks daimler, thanks cerberus, thanks fiat.
Ford-GM-Ram has 90% of the truck market.
Maybe my numbers are extreme or wrong but I am sure the BIG THREE sells MORE trucks than Toyota-Honda-Nissan.
The higher number of trucks out there are going to have MORE problems cause MORE people own them report those problems!
Plus: Toyota-Honda-Nissan are pleasure driving trucks that don't get abused, not used for working hard hauling and towing. Owners of the Japanese trucks baby them cause many of the problems can be related to driver abuse.
The people that test at Consumer Reports don't reflex the normal truck owner, they live in the northeast rich class in their multi million dollar homes where they look down on working men like you as dumb hillbillies. They look at a truck as luxury limo and forget it has a bed on the back.
Ranger is currently 9th in Australia, not much Globally though
@Dave, @LMAO
Dave has a good point. CR's survey is very small statistically speaking. It also does not factor for the VERY old product lines (trucks that is) from Honda, Nissan and Toyota.
You would think they have their product quality worked out after TEN years of making a particular product!
GM and Ford are MUCH more aggressive in terms of product development. They also get good customer satisfaction scores in the same magazine's surveys of its readers. And as a CR reader/subscriber myself, yes, they are a liberally biased readership--compared to a more mainstream auto-oriented magazine like Hot Rod or Truck Trend.
The key question in CR's survey responses is the question "would you buy this vehicle again?" Ford and GM usually do well in that area.
papa jim,
More choice would help.
The pickup market is quite large in the US. Maybe if there was more competition this would help.
@BAFO - Having more "choices" would only give us more cars to choose from, but if there was any kind of real demand for Peugeot, Renault, Tata, Proton, etc, nameplates, they'd already be here. It's stuff we generally wouldn't buy and not likely to have Toyota and other update their cars more often with new cutting edge technology.
Toyota buyers especially, don't mind old tech appliances on wheels. There's not much incentive for Toyota to move forward when consumers keep buying whatever aging tech Toyota puts out.
They also said buy the better trucks from Ram and G.M. NOT FORD lol

HAHAHA you are so predictable, As of this morning the F150 is on the recommended list. Guess what is not............Give you a hint, the name can start with a R or F.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I don't give too much credit to customer distorts. They gave the pre 2008 Titans a horrible reliability rating and mine was flawless. I am on my third titan which have all been bulletproof. I had a tundra prior to my titan which was also bulletproof. I think it all comes down to preventative maintenance. I am OCD with maintaining all my vehicles and even my domestic trucks didn't give me any issues.
