Toyota Responds to Terrorism Inquiry

2016-Toyota-Hilux-24 II

Anytime a major network news organizations run a story about the Islamic State group or Middle East terrorism, it doesn't take long before an image of a Toyota Hilux pickup truck or Toyota Land Cruiser SUV filled with black-garbed militants crosses the TV screen.

According to ABC News that has U.S. counter-terrorism officials asking how these extremists are acquiring Toyota vehicles. According to a recent statement by Toyota in Japan, the company is cooperating fully with the U.S. inquiry.

The Terror Financing unit of the U.S. Treasury Department wants to make sure that Western companies are not intentionally or inadvertently selling to terror organizations; Toyota assured U.S. officials it has procedures designed to prevent the unauthorized sale of its trucks and SUVs for paramilitary or terrorist use.

There are several theories about how so many new and used Toyotas are getting into the hands of terror groups, ranging from smuggling across national boarders to individual sympathizers purchasing the vehicles and shipping them to the militants. Other brands used by the Islamic State group include Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Isuzu.

The author left out Ford, as one US pickup truck, still with its original owner's business advertising on display, was also seen in a terrorist video.

The smarter question would be not "why is it primarily Toyota" but rather, "who is funding all of the purchases?" Someone, some where, is mobilizing the terrorists. I know what my guess is, but it's up to the international community to work it out for themselves. Considering other recent activities, I think the answer is obvious--but it may just be TOO obvious.

So the US Gubment wants to be sure Toyota isn't directly selling vehicles to terrorists. All good. So why is Obama free to give $150 billion to Iran (one of the biggest terror states existing today) with his traitorous nuke deal?

Toyota shouldn't bother replying to idiots. Except to say
J!HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is absurd to even think a company such as toyota or any big auto manufacturer is intentionally selling to terrorists. All the manufacturers do is build them. How they are acquired after that is not the manufacturers fault.

@ Haha UAW

As opposed countless American administrations propping up Saudi Arabia and selling them countless weapons while a significant portion or the Saudi princes are propping up ISIS - giving them a lot of funds. Not to mention where the 911 terrorists were from.....

The US is it's own worst enemy.

Has our wonderful government even considered that maybe these are stolen vehicles shipped to the terrorists?

The Obama Administration is worried about how the enemy got Toyota pickups?

How did the enemy get all those HMMWVs?

Oh, that’s right. Obama sent them some in Libya.

What a jack@$$ this President is.

Obama paid for them.... who is kidding who?

He sent 650 tons of weapons from Benghazi to Isis via Turkey.

He gave them $5 billion via Qatar when they took the 5 al queda scumbags from Gitmo... and they passed it on to Isis.

Plus Isis is selling stolen oil via western banks and since when is it a big deal to buy a truck?

I bet on trucks from UN ‘peacekeeping’ missions and NGOs like Doctors Without Borders. Use a search engine for these ‘missions’; most seem to have dozens or sometimes hundreds of vehicles like these.

It’s only a mystery if Toyota wants it to be. Capturing or even inspecting a number of the trucks would reveal who they were originally sold to.

Here are my thoughts:

A) A third party is buying the vehicles for them

B) They're stealing the vehicles from dealerships

C) Toyota is lying and secretly selling the vehicles to them in order to get extra cash, but doesn't want to come out with it.

Mystery is solved!

I used Google!

Obama State Dept purchases Toyota trucks for ISIS:
http://www.pri.org/stories/2014-04-01/one-toyota-pickup-truck-top-shopping-list-free-syrian-army-and-taliban

Recently, when the US State Department resumed sending non-lethal aid to Syrian rebels, the delivery list included 43 Toyota trucks. - April 01, 2014

Timing seems about right.

"In 2014, a report by the radio broadcaster Public Radio International noted that the U.S. State Departmentdelivered 43 Toyota trucks to Syrian rebels. A more recent report in an Australian newspaper said that more than 800 of the trucks had been reported missing in Sydney between 2014 and 2015, and quoted terror experts speculating that they may have been exported to ISIS territory."

Well that was glossed over pretty quickly...

Google "Obama admitted to arming Isis". Silly of ABC News and PUTC to still be denying it.

OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA THIS IS A TERRORIST PICKUP!!!!

These are great trucks....

But you will not see isis parading around in syria with these pickups anymore, as the Russians will blow them and isis to hell!

The U.S. never bombed Isis, it was all lies and pretending. Obama actually supplied them!

I love Toyotas, especially with a diesel!

I don't think it would be that hard to find out where the money is coming from to buy these vehicles.

If the US, Australia, etc are worried how and why ISIS are buying Toyotas, just look at one and get the VIN.

Find it's port of delievery and where go from there.

It's not hard to track a serial number, it's on a computer somewhere, maybe even a Toyota computer.

@BAFO - The trucks are bought from a private seller, then the paper trail dead ends. They're never registered after that, or they're simply stolen trucks.

DiM,
Use google. Understand how modern logistics functions.

Then come back and talk to me.

Just because it isn't in the US doesn't mean that Toyota doesn't track via VIN.

Trust me, it is easy to find the port of entry for these vehicles.

I would first look at what faction these guys are funding them.

I'd bet you can easily find the trail.

We all know where comrade barry's loyalty rests. He'll support and supply his notso secret brothers any way he can. To Toyota bathhouse barry says thanks for building a dependable truck for my brothers

Maybe the US would look at it differently if the terror group chose to drive F150 and Silverado instead.

But even terrorists prefer the better reliability, dependability, durability and ruggedness of Toyota products over that from Ford and GM.

@highdesertcat
Toyota is very popular with insurgent groups. Toyota Hilux's are very popular in a lot of theatres of war. If you remember the " Toyota War" that was.fought in Somalia. US Special Forces, ditched their Tacoma's for the Hiluxes in Iraq
Trying to find the sources will be near nigh impossible. In 2012 Toyota sold 745,000 Hiluxes, the Model year ISIS seems to have
On the other hand they could crack down on Plumbers old vehicles and in the case of Iranian Khatib Hezbollah, Dodge RAM Duallies

@Highdesertcat - The Tacoma fits their needs better than any other, except if the Tundra was just as available and parts just a as easily attained, who's to say?

But it's surprising US fullsize pickups are used by them at all. Sounds like an ad pitch to me! Perhaps not.

Except their *needs* are vastly different than typical pickup buyers in the US. The Tacoma is what's known here as a "lifestyle" pickup.

@BAFO - Obviously anyone's pickup can end up being used by them. If an old BT50 of your's is used by them then tracked back to you, as the last registered owner, you've got some 'splanin' to do.

Of course you could've sold it to a sweet old lady that resold it without doing any paperwork whatsoever. It happens all the time. Anymore, you can't simply pocket the cash from a random dude that pays you and drives off.

DiM,
Use google and find the answers to your questions or incorrect assumptions.

If you bothered to use Google you will realize that the US government is concerned about the NEW Toyotas.

Not stolen Toyotas from Winnepeg.

Also, use Goooooooooooooooooooooooooogle and research how items are tracked with the use of modern logistic systems.

I hope you realise that the US isn't the only country that has advanced logistic systems in use.

I'd say the Japanese also use computerised systems.

In Winnepeg do you still use an abacus??

@BAFO - I know exactly what the Feds are concerned about. They're not the brightest when it comes to things such as this. Can they even tell a 2012 Taco from a '15? Most of America can't! The Feds probably pounced that plumber from Texas.

But I don't know why you would think or assume me or anyone wouldn't know how vehicles are tracked, just because you didn't. Especially around these circles and knowing I'm an insider in the trade.

And the Feds don't know that they're not stolen.

Toyota is the most American vehicle on the road!

Ford is built by Muslims in Dearborn, MI! Fact! I saw it on Fox News!

Fiat-Chrysler had to be bailed out twice, taking welfare money from the government! Now they're owned by the Italians! Fact!

GM is a loser company that had to take welfare money from the government and it still builds it's trucks in Mexico! Fact!

Buy Toyota and support the American worker! Buy Ford, GM or Fiat-Chrysler and support the UAW and their liberal allies! Toyota's are built in Texas by hard working men and women without liberal union involvement! God Bless America and God Bless Toyota!

Bulk of these Pickups go to the ME, curtesy of ME organised crime.
ISIS and Al Nusrah, get the bulk of their funding from the Heron, ICE, stolen cars, and gun running trades. Add to the occasional oil well in their possession. We are talking Billions. Hilux is very very popular. In fact a US Major, said that the armoured Hilux, was vastly better than the now defunct Humvee
All this positive publicity has made the Hilux an icon for counter / insurgencies anywhere

This is the equivalent to Billary Clinton blaming gun manufacturers for gun violence. Completely idiotic and leftist. What a waste of time and taxpayers money.

ISIS could be a potential market for some of those aluminum F-150s. Ford could increase their sales overnight and become the World's largest seller of trucks. Just kidding. I doubt the US Government or even Toyota can keep ISIS or the Taliban from getting Toyota Hiluxes or Land Cruisers, there are just too many different channels that they could get them from. As for these Toyotas being American made I would doubt that since only the Tacomas and Tundras are the only trucks Toyota makes here. Toyota has manufacturing plants all over the World. Toyota is a global corporation which transcends being just Japanese or American.

Love to see some VIN number tracking back to the original purchasers

This sort of thing has been going on FOREVER.

Back in the day, a couple of decades ago, I was doing Army stuff in South/Central America. At one point, I was doing security around certain areas. A common crime was the theft of Toyota Land Cruisers to be sold/used by criminal/militant groups. Patrols and Land Rovers were stolen too, but Toyota was the vehicle of choice.

Dav,
My mother is French and my Grandfather held a high position with a large paint manufacturer.

He was sent to Algeria for a number of years just after WWII and the Algerians back then were terrorising the French and local Algerians who wanted to have a western style of government.

This will continue on as you state until the Islamic culture remove their religion from politics and military.

There is no room for any religious beliefs to dictate what a person should and shouldn't do.

Sort of like making regulations and rules to limit imports between nations.

There are many factions within these Islamic groups.

The odd thing is the majority of the population don't want them. They are like us and want to work and put kids through school.

I agree with Big Al. Isis is like us.

Can't they just track the vin back to where it was delivered by Toyota ? Then see who buys them and ships them to terrorist ?

And that's one good looking truck, way better than the crap they sell in the states

I don't believe that it will make any difference if the VIN number is traceable or not in that ISIS and the Taliban will get these Toyotas from some where. The Saudis themselves are financially supporting these groups out of fear that their rulers will be removed from power but making a deal with the Devil doesn't mean that that will not happen eventually.

As for most people regardless of country, religion, or culture want to make a living, provide for their families, and want a better future for their children. My wife flew all over the World for Pan Am for 25 years and had friends in Iran and Lebanon. She said most were more afraid of extremist Muslim groups than the brutal dictatorships that ruled them. Iran was the Persian Empire and Lebanon was Phoenicia which were peaceful merchants and traders. Both countries have had their countries and national identities destroyed by extremist Muslims. Even the brutal dictatorship of Sadam Hussien allowed more religious freedom for Christians and Jews than the Taliban or ISIS which practice religious genocide.

It is important to maintain a separation of Church and State which many of the Christian Right fail to see the consequences of not having this separation. A county clerk in Kentucky does have the right to resign from her position if she does not want to violate her religious beliefs but she has a duty to perform her job as an elected official of the County and swears an oath to uphold the laws of the State of Kentucky and the United States of America. I am familiar with the oath of office for officials in Kentucky which also include not to duel.

What does that mean to you, jeff, separation of church and state

@XT17
Bush sent the weapons to Iraq years ago. Study the history of the us military actions and you will agree, it is not Obama's fault.

@XT17 Hell I guess it was President Obama that sent Troops into Iraq back in 2003 because of WOMD's (None ever found!!!), and 4,100 U.S. troops died for what?????????????????? Or I guess its was President Obama who ordered the training of Osama Bin Laden by the CIA in guerilla warfare back in the early's 80's.

What's happen in the Middle-East now is a direct result of killing leaders like Saddam who are crazy and evil in there right, but they kept extremist groups under control. Now the corks that held back a shaken and pressure world zone have been remove and these are the results, Isis, Al Qaeda, and other smaller extremist groups. THIS IS WHATS WHEN YOU GO INTO OTHER PEOPLE'S HOUSES AND CULTURES WITH NO UNDERSTANDING OF THERE CULTURE AND DECIDE TO TAKE-OVER AND CONTROL!! THESE PEOPLE ARE WELLING TO DIED FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN.

It means that the Government should not endorse any religion or force any religious beliefs upon any citizen. As an employee or an elected official one should not force their beliefs upon anyone nor should they allow their religious beliefs to interfere with the performance of their official duties as an elected official or an employee of any governmental entity. I have the right to exercise my religious beliefs but not at the expense of performing my official duties.

Here is a Wikipedia definition of secularism which is the premise of separation of church and state.

"Secularism is the principle of the separation of government institutions and persons mandated to represent the state from religious institutions and religious dignitaries. One manifestation of secularism is asserting the right to be free from religious rule and teachings, or, in a state declared to be neutral on matters of belief, from the imposition by government of religion or religious practices upon its people. Another manifestation of secularism is the view that public activities and decisions, especially political ones, should be uninfluenced by religious beliefs and/or practices.

Secularism draws its intellectual roots from Greek and Roman philosophers such as Epicurus and Marcus Aurelius; from Enlightenment thinkers such as Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Baruch Spinoza, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine; and from more recent freethinkers and atheists such as Robert Ingersoll and Bertrand Russell.

The purposes and arguments in support of secularism vary widely. In European laicism, it has been argued that secularism is a movement toward modernization, and away from traditional religious values (also known as secularization). This type of secularism, on a social or philosophical level, has often occurred while maintaining an official state church or other state support of religion. In the United States, some argue that state secularism has served to a greater extent to protect religion and the religious from governmental interference, while secularism on a social level is less prevalent. Within countries as well, differing political movements support secularism for varying reasons."

There no mention of separation of church and state in the constitution. The first amendment states, "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...meaning the government shall not sponsor or endorse any religious belief or prevent people from following their beliefs.

It is comrade barry's fault. He disrupted Libya and Egypt. In Egypt his brotherhood buddies assumed power and were promptly kicked out by the Egyptian army, causing barack great stress. He made a questionable deal with Iran and left a vacuum in the area which has been filled by Russia. Now he has pulled the only aircraft carrier out of the area. Comrade barry is the world's laughing stock.
However, I agree we should have left Saddam alone as long as he stayed in Iraq. Comrade barry inherited a situation in which he is unqualified to deal with. From bowing and kissing rings, disrupting countries, letting 4 Americans die, trading scum for a deserter scum, and making deals with terrorists this president shows us everyday whose side he's on.

Toyota is laughing all the way to the bank though, no matter what. Huge obscene payday for them.

Toyota is clearly not selling or supplying trucks to ISIS directly. The very notion is ridiculous. If they did, they'd provide Wranglers that could detonate remotely.

Overpaid idiots in the media, we've come to expect, but in DC??? OK we're used to that too...

Except the Top Gear skit on the Hilux beat to hell and dropped in the surf is dumb and overrated. Virtually any car from the era, you can fubar the body, submerge it in water and it'll still run/drive.

The best I've witnessed is Hondas. One guy wraps an early '90s Accord around a telephone pole, completely taco'd it, and walked away with the engine still running. You could probably drive it in circles.

Anyone who thinks terrorists walk into Toyota showrooms and buys new trucks is a fool. Maybe comrade barry could ask one of his isis buds where they get em from, but he probably already knows. Toyota doesn't need this kind of publicity

I read the ABC piece and I don't know if Toyota sounded clearly innocent or not. I wouldn't put it past Toyota or their dealers or a subsidiary to sell them to ISIS. HP sold computers to terrorists in Iran.

I saw this Toyota truck ad on cable last night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQzZJVfZydE

Charging through the desert is one thing, but the explosions are a bit much. All the commercial needs is a jihadi overdub.

Toyota has no control on what is going on. The Terrorists have a lot of stolen vehicles in their inventory

ISIS has plenty of dough from crude oil sales.

I’m sure there are plenty of places in the mideast to purchase Toyota pickups, cash on the counter, no questions asked.
