2016 Ford F-150 Named Green Truck of the Year
The editorial staff of the Green Car Journal has named the 2016 Ford F-150 as the 2016 Green Truck of the Year due in large part to the wide variety of powertrains and fuel choices available for the half-ton pickup truck.
The F-150 was singled out for its segment-leading light weight due to its aluminum body panels and extensive use of high-strength steel that directly translates into fuel savings and efficiency. Powertrain choices like the optional, fuel-efficient and more powerful 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6; a fuel-prep option that allows the F-150 to run on compressed natural gas or propane; and a downsized, more economical 5.0-liter V-8 engine (when compared to the competition) helped sway the judges.
The Green Car Journal also considered the F-150's extensive use of sustainable and recycled materials (plastic bottles, castor bean oil, soybeans and blue jeans for insulation) when deciding to reward the pickup for its superior environmental responsibility.
The 2016 Ram ProMaster City compact commercial van, which is offered in cargo and five-passenger van configurations, won the 2016 Commercial Green Car of the Year.

What about recycled beer cans?
This is a great honor for Ford. Good job guys.
You're right mp, what about the recycled beer cans that not only Ford uses, but so does GM and Ram does too for their body parts, suspension parts, and engine parts. Hey, while your at it, let's talk about the recycled beer cans found on just about every class 8 semi-truck for the past 50 years.

Recycling sure does beat putting stuff in the land fills around the globe. Most of these people do not understand recycled metals and plastics are in many consumer products.
Obviously the judges didn't take into account it's real life FE.
With around 16mpg combined FE this is sort of a joke giving this award to the aluminium F-150.
As for the rest of it. It's good to see that a vehicle is quite recyclable........but aren't steel cars recyclable?
@Big Al
An even bigger joke is you and your posts. I guess you life sucks so much over there in Australia that you have to come and post on American sites.
Also, are you still working on that apologyou post you are supposed to send after you called me a liar and I proved you wrong (again)? Just let me know when you are man enough to post it and I will graciously accept it.

you are rather a joke there big guy. You can find anything on the internet to try and support what you want. the funny thing is that link you provided showing 16mpg was filled with other reports of higher MPG. It was rather comical to say the least.

This is one ugly truck, they can have thier 5-600lbs wieght savings over a comprable Chevy 1500 with a 6.2L with more HP more Tq, more payload, more towing, better Fuel economy and better looks...
I like Ford trucks and all.... but their 5.0 fuel efficiency is on par with the more powerful 5.7 Hemi, 6.2 Ecotec3, and noticeably less than the 5.3 Ecotec3. I can understand this award going to Ford for their practices in sustainability I guess... but they're certainly not ahead of the pack when it comes to fuel efficiency.
Diesels are very dirty and enviromental polluting. Look at foreign countries that primarily use diesel for transportation. There are days they ban driving there diesel cars due to pollution.
Being "green" has nothing to do with actually protecting the environment. It has much more to do with that ooey-gooey warm feeling people get because they THINK they are helping the environment. I read somewhere that you have to drive a Prius 130K before its carbon footprint equals non-hybrid cars due to the fossil fuel needed to mine and process the nickel for the batteries. My wife's family has a New Holland TL90 on the farm that was rated @2.9 gph at full throttle. When they went to purchase another NH of the same size a few years later, they had a new "cleaner" engine that burned 4 gph!
Ford #1 Truck again. Doesn't matter if it in Quality, Sales, Reliability,Engineering....... Ford Truck are always #1.
"The Green Car Journal also considered the F-150's extensive use of sustainable and recycled materials (plastic bottles, castor bean oil, soybeans and blue jeans for insulation)"
This is the only part that makes sense to me. I personally do not see any pickup truck as a "green" vehicle. They're all gas guzzlers when compared to their car relatives.
Can a car do work like a pickup truck? No it cannot. So saying a car is more environmentally friendly is comparing apples to oranges.
Didn't the 2.7 EB outrun the 5.3L and 5.7L Hemi and give the 6.2L a run for its money. This is power plus efficiency.
Green. Hahahahaha. There's a dubious award celebrating a phony movement. But of course ford will run with it, after all tree huggers buy trucks too.
As for diesels being pollutors, tell that to the companies that pay way over 100k for new trucks due to the American kgb, aka EPA. This 2014 kw has a clean air certified sticker on her hood. There's sensors that constantly go bad, an afterburner, and a pee tank because environmentalist wackos found an easy target. And if it wasn't for diesels you'd be naked, homeless, and hungry. Rant over
Being naked would be the ultimate green statement. Going hungry would prevent obesity. As for pee tanks that would be green as well by recycling human waste.
Sarcasm noted
Extensive use of "military grade plastic".LOL
@ Scott
"Diesels are very dirty and environmental polluting. "
Gasoline emissions are far more hazardous to the environment than diesels were. Diesel emissions were more of a health hazard than an environmental one. Black diesel smoke(diesel particulates) have more carcinogens than cigarettes do which is why the emissions devices are on them. That has changed with the 2010 emissions regulations since both gasoline engines and diesel engines have the same emissions limits.
So it has to do with fuel options as well. CNG and propane and gas? Those r good options for the F150. I know those options are available in the other big 2 but only with HDs. Truth is they will hardly sell anything other than gas. This award should have gone to the baby twins and their baby DMax. Achieving over 30 mpg is historic when it comes to trucks. And their capability is better than some full size (ram and current Titan). I know ford isn't the only manu to use recycled materials for insulation...everyone does. So half of this award is crap. Isn't aluminum more harsh on the environment to create than steel?
Oh yeah and they're not all gas guzzlers either. Ram and the baby twins not sip diesel. Remember ram won this award last year for its intro to diesel.
My kw uses aluminum and high strength steel and has a fuel efficient clean burning diesel (thanks to the greenie weenies). No garbage for insulation though, so I guess that knocks her out of contention. It's amazing those hipsters even noticed a gas powered truck

Read through this forum big al and tell me how many owners are complaining about poor fuel economy or performance? I'll save you the time. There's many pages of comments from owners and hardly a single complaint.

Your "pee tank" comment brings up a semi-serious question:
Could a person collect his or her urine; filter it; evaporate it to increase concentration; sterilize it; and pour it to the urea tank of a diesel-engined vehicle as an economical way to keep the diesel running clean?
It would save the replacement cost of the dealer-provided stuff, and save the annoyance of going to the dealer...
Anyone?
============================
Don't know if anyone has tried it. Have to consider the cost and work involved. That stuff costs more than diesel and it's only ammonia and water. Rip off. Ancient Romans used the ammonia from pee to clean their clothes so maybe it's plausible
DUH Beebe its a furd site, so yah they gonna brag about mileage durrrrrrrrrrrr!
It cost more time and money to mine AL is a more rare metal, that's why it cost more. The eco junk motors get shitty MPG in the real world. GM and Ram are more eco friendly end of story!
Case in point. Another feel-good award being celebrated by an industry (the media) that has exchanged its independence in order to get strokes from the advertisers and the government.
What ever happened to the idea that the free press is supposed to act as a watchdog that keeps their readers up to date on the latest news and commentary?
Every major company in the auto industry today has surrendered at least one seat on its board of directors to some agitator from the green movement and become less competitive in the process. Try translating any of this into real lasting value for the consumers who pay for it. Good luck.
beeBee,
Big Al did not give you permission to talk! Speak when spoken to.
The new Titan will be priced less than the heavier aluminium Frod F-150 and this is a vehicle with a diesel will be greener!
papa jim,
Big Al from Oz will report you to Mark Williams. Mark Williams is part of the green movement.
@bafo Support Team
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Consider, for a moment, the lives lost by all of the brave young American servicemen who fought for our freedoms--including freedom of the press--so that today's generation of reporters, editors and publishers can behave the way they do.
I heard a representative of the so called ethanol industry being interviewed on the radio over the weekend on a show devoted to auto technology. The guy's whole rant was BS. The show's host did nothing to make the guy explain any of the ridiculous claims he was making. Sad.
Using pee for urea thanks would be the ultimate in recycling and would be less costly. Now if they could just develop a motor that would run on pee. They could also make every major landfill and sewage treatment plants into electrical generating facilities with all the methane gas that is produced from them. That would really be green and think how much extra electricity would be generated. Might even have enough power to recharge those electric cars. I see a future of abundant and inexpensive energy.
Another green tip is to keep your car and truck longer because it takes more energy to produce and transport new vehicles than it does to keep an existing vehicle running longer. Of course the auto magazines are not going to suggest that because their revenue is generated from ads to sell new cars and trucks. Being green is much more than putting recycled materials in vehicles and driving a Prius. Being green can be a cheaper by maintaining what you have and keeping it longer.
@gom
Obviously you are unemployed.
You have the leisure of: a) time, b) no bathroom facilities, c) container you carry around to collect your urine (that your family and neighbors envy you).
I can guess your SAT score and GPA to be below average.
@johnny dope boy
Most people go on to those forums to report problems and ask for help. Go to a silverado forum and you will be hard pressed to find a thread like that where owner after owner has nothing to report but praise.
Awww whats wrong BARFO and jonny dork, you mad you pissy truck didn't win squat.
GTFO!!!
I love watching big al get picked apart.
Nice job Ford well deserved
Is Green Car Journal still in existence? They seem to have disappeared from the scene.
What a great loss that would be. No more green car journal. How will we ever survive
@roadram - only 2-3% of urine is urea. You'd have to collect a ton of pee. As Big Al for help ;)
@papa jim - auto journalists are the worst since they rely on the Auto industry for access to their test fleets and PR. There is a built in conflict of interest if one does not "play the game". PUTC news is just a clearing house for industry PR.
I've read of journalists at "The Truth About Cars" get blacklisted for slagging new cars/trucks. That is the way it should be. Be honest with one's evaluations and INVESTIGATE any press release or Company PR claim to see if it is true.
That will never happen here.
@ Lou, HAHAHAHA that is a classic
Lou,
PUTC only does testing and reviews.
There is no investigative journalism. TTAC does raise issues, but it also does no investigative journalism.
Investigative journalism or searching for the truth no longer exists in many situations. The most likely reason is costs.
So, magazine style sites like PUTC will just "cut and paste" and re-hash many articles.
Plus it appears Cars.com doesn't really care much about PUTC.
I suppose Cars.com would of done research and found that people will read the articles and move on and not read the comments.
How often do we do that, read an article and not read the comments section?
So, we only are entertaining ourselves.
@KC
"Can a car do work like a pickup truck? No it cannot. So saying a car is more environmentally friendly is comparing apples to oranges."
I'm aware that pickup trucks and real SUVs are far more capable than cars, so I was saying that based on the amount of raw emissions they emit regardless of what they're designed to do. Despite that, I still think pickup trucks and SUVs are the best vehicles one can own.
Big Al from Oz - I agree. The blog area here is a form of entertainment. PUTC neglects it so it has very little contributory benefit to one's knowledge of trucks. TTAC is vastly superior even when conversations go off topic.
Lou, I wouldn't want to keep tanks of pee around my house.
Wonder what happened to the TV ad that used to be on tv by GM (Government Motors), Stating how their pick up trucks are stronger than one made out of aluminum. Heard that they are going to build aluminum pick up trucks in 2018!!
Ford is was and always will be full of $#!^
A court ruled Nov. 12 that a lawsuit may continue against Ford for misstating its mileage estimates of its C-MAX and Fusion hyrbid cars.
Ford attempted to dismiss the lawsuit based on its claim that the mileage estimates provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, were in part, an estimate and that “actual results may vary.” Car owners suing the automaker pointed to Ford’s media blitz that included Ryan Seacrest in Times Square with a bunch of billboards and T-shirts with the number 47 on them and “47 Challenges, 47 Days” marketing push and Facebook posts that the cars would achieve a “EPA-certified 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway ratings for a 47-mpg combined rating” — among many other 47-branded things — when the cars didn’t come anywhere close.*
Now whats going on with Chrysler??
I saw a new Ford truck today looking very sharp. I would take any new fullsize on the market right now at the drop of a hat. They are all awesome.
