Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: October 2015

2015 PUTC sales photo

The winning streak for pickup trucks continues, as October proved to be one of the strongest months of the year with overall auto sales gains about 10 percent higher than they were last year at this time.

Both Ford and Chevrolet are having steady, strong success in both their light-duty and heavy-duty lineups. Ford is showing steady growth and likely will make a year-end push with with some targeted incentives and regional discounts. Both Chevy and GMC are offering great deals on outgoing 2015 half-ton models to make room for the updated and restyled 2016 trucks. As you might expect, average transaction prices across the pickup truck segment are rising. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are enjoying strong sales as are other higher-priced half-ton and heavy-duty premium trim packages.

Standout sellers for October include Chevrolet and Ram; the Toyota Tacoma had a strong month as well and the Tundra held steady. Both Nissan and Honda have to look to the future as their new products won’t be available for several months. The Nissan Titan XD should start trickling onto lots by the end of the year, and we don’t expect the new Honda Ridgeline to make its debut until early next year; however, we will see a modified 2016 Ridgeline at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show that is all prepped to run this year’s Baja 1000 race.

Ford also is investing allot im sure but it also is about how they fudge the numbers for investors.

So I guess all that talk of the GM mid-size twins taking sales away from the Tacoma were nonsense. They sold 90,000 units and yet the Taco still has a 16% YTD increase, and everyone but the Frontier has an increase of some kind.

I guess Colorado and Canyon buyers are maybe first-time truck buyers entering the market?

@Big Al

Your theory is that since you think that no one could possibly want the new F150 then the only reason it is still outselling the other truck lines is because of steep discounts making them less expensive than the others. You see, your biased logic is a bit flawed because of a little thing called facts. People tend to believe facts over flawed biased theories such as yours.

Fact is that the F150 has the highest average transaction price in comparison to the other half tons. This means that even after these steep discounts you claim are applied, the final buying price is still higher than the other half tons. This totally blows your theory that the only reason why they are selling is due to big rebates that make them less expensive. Facts are facts and the facts say you are wrong.

Speaking of facts. This seems to come up a lot lately. Can you point me in the direction or perhaps share a link that compares Ford F150 ATP to GM (GMC and Chevy combinded) ATP? (Serious request).

@Ray Ray,

You're right Man, my apologies. You made a good point.

@rayRay - this is from July - http://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2015/07/01/june-auto-sales-transaction-prices-increase-f150/29571091/

@Ray Ray - I'd say that the High Country is closer to the F150 Lariat than it is to the Platinum or Limited.
I'd like to see Chevy go with a high end trim that does not have a "country" theme. Perhaps that is why Sierra has Denali which is more on par with Limited or Platinum.

@ Ray Ray

"Ford reports that the F-150 is selling for an average of $44,100, the highest in the segment and an important metric for pickup trucks, which typically have large profit margins.

Chevy trucks PR manager Tom Wilkinson disputes that point, stating that his data shows the F-150 has an average transaction price of $41,425, though does admit it’s slightly ahead of the GMC Sierra with an average selling price of $40,558. The Chevy Silverado, he says, sells for an average of $36,087."

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2015/07/f-150-incentives-down-transaction-prices-up-says-ford.html

I kind of expected fords new friends and neighbors incentive to produce more off higher end fords from the manufacture. This program is prolly even less then you could get in rebates just a couple months ago. Could be some brilliant marketing by ford to spend less on incentives.

@Scott,

that's exactly what I said on a different thread when some people were thinking Ford was giving these trucks away with this sale. Most people can negotiate that price. A and D plans are much better. Throughout the year Fiat offers employee pricing on everything. Much higher rebate.

Funny how GM doesn't even combine the 2 twins together in sales but the gm fangirls do. They never combined Camaro and firebird sales together either. Might as well combine Cadillac and buick together while your at it. Guess they gotta grab them straws when they can.

You can never satisfy fan boys. Blind allegiance to brands dismisses the important news that the automotive industry is doing better than it has in the last 15 years. Who cares who is making the most profit when overall the industry is experiencing a boom If Ford has a gigantic sale then if one wants a Ford then take advantage of this opportunity. This is true with GM and Chrysler as well. Such sophomoric behavior from supposedly adult males. Some of you guys need to grow up.

GM truck sales are up because GM fanboys are buying 15 models before they get 40000 less warranty miles on the 16 models. They won't admit it but they need those extra warranty miles. GM's stock price is higher because most of balance sheet was cleaned because of the bankruptcy and the $45 billion golden parachute they were given by the government to ensure success. Ford did it the old fashion way buy paying down debt themselves.

GM in total do sell more truck, obviously....but yet Ford is profiting more than GM. LMFAO!!

Posted by: Frank | Nov 3, 2015 1:19:05 PM

This just means you are paying too much. LMFAO!!! Dummy

The ignorance on display here, is simply...entertaining.

@Truckerman
They are lacking common sense.

Lou & Cummins,
Your articles are from July. It means the data is from June on down. It was the time when you could only get F150s in CrewCabs w/ some Ext. Cabs sprinkled in between. Not only that, most of them were loaded w/ options.
Not really valid data today. It was more of Fords PR spin.
I would like to see something current.

Scott & LMAO,
Rebates aren't going away. This new deal can be combined with all manufacturers rebates and dealer discounts.

can better understand that GM is literally on fire and sticking it to Ford! I like Fords too, but I think it's so dang funny how you guys and the publistists all say "best selling truck!" Play on words. Dodge says "best in class" too, but everybody knows they don't come close. GM is leading the pack! You can ignore it, say it ain't so, or just plain deny it, but it is what it is. Period! And now Ford is giving employee discount for everyone?? Hurts don't it! Lmao! And now the new restyled GM trucks will begin to arrive across the land. This can't hurt:)

We shall call the GM trucks the "G" series so you Ford guys can better understand that GM is literally on fire and sticking it to Ford! Period! If you want to weigh in selling price, how about all those colorados and canyons? No body really mentioning this? Think GM is profiting in the extra sale of 10k units? Lol! Sorry Ford...

What are the current rebates still available???

The constant barage of overstatements directed at my by the Phord phans is incredible. Are the Ford phans unhappy? So, why does Ford need a fire sale? Because the F Series, which is the golden egg for Ford is performing as well as Ford had hoped? Just look at the numbers.

1. I have always stated Ford will become and remain the number 2 pickup manufacturer due to the less than expected/stellar performance of the aluminium wonder truck.

2. I have always stated the aluminium F-150 is competitive if it's pricing is competitive.

3. To the Frod phan who stated that the F Series has the highest transaction price is incorrect, it's actually GMC's Sierra range.

If you look at the average transaction price of the F-150 range you will find it is most likely equivalent to the Silverado 1500. This is due to the number of SuperDutys sold by Ford.

BAFO you are so full of yourself it's sad. How is this a fire sale? How is it any different t than any other sale or rebate? Year end is always buying season because of huge sales. GM is offering 0% financing for 72 months and 20% off on certain vehicles. Sales and rebates willbe plenty for the rest of the year.

I do not think the "F series " includes all of the "F series" It must only be F150, F250, and F350.
It must NOT include F450, F550, F650, F750, F53, and F59.

What is a phord phan? You realize how ridiculous that is?

Employee discount is not an incentive, it's a knee jerk, scared, move by the seat or your pants, thinking you're about to lose your ars. Now I know Ford is not going out of business but it sure looks bad for them to make such a desperate move. It's almost like the 80's again back when Ford had the largest recall in history and the largest bailout to date...Stange they would pull the employee discount out of the bag. I wonder how that makes thier employees feel that they are giving that deep discount away to everyone. Is it because people fear the corrosive properties of aluminum that the new trucks havent taken off or the loss in rigidery? One more thing....Ford manufactures and sells trucks right? GM manufactures and sells trucks, right? Which of these manufactures more trucks? GM does! Not only do the they sell more full size trucks but it appears GM sells a huge butt load of midsize trucks too! Lol!Thanks phord phans!

Hey Frank go chug another cup of retard, you dumb @**!

this isn't an employee discount equivalent.... It a friend and family discount or x plan. Employees and retirees have an a and z plan discount program which is a lot more of a discount then this incentive program ford is using

Add one more sale to the mix. 2016 Ram Power Wagon. Can't wait for that new car smell and Alpine tunes. Got some road trips coming.

FORD is #1!!

Yup! Recalls and cheep fleet.

Hey, let's agree, they all make nice trucks, GM,Ford, Dodge, even Toyota, but this long standing slogan that Ford out sells everyone for the last 35 years is just not true. They actually did for a few years around 2011, but not before and not anymore. They don't sell more trucks or cars. It appears GM has actually pulled thier head out and righted the ship.

SKEETER
If ford is making so much money why is gm stock worth twice as much as ford... 35.87 vs 14.81 a share there is alot more to a company that quarterly profits Gm has been investing a ton into plants, development, ect.
=============

Fords market Value
58.56B

GMs market Value
55.48B

Hey Todd, you mentioned GMs stock price is so high because of the bailout...well, really it's because they IPO'd to pay off the loan. However, did you know that Ford had a Gov. Bailout too? Infact it is the largest todate. In fact they hold the record for largest recall as well. Where do you think the "Quality is job 1" slogan came from. They hired a PR firm to help polish such a badly damaged reputation after they had to recall nearly every darn Ford on the road. Given these facts why don't we stop bashing and have decent, stimulating discussion. They all make nice vehicles and GM really is on top at the moment with, Ford coming in second. Another thing not mentioned here is that GM leads Ford in quality ranks. Infact Ford slipped backwards in quality for 2015 according to JD Powers. Heck, Ive owned Fords and would again, but these are the facts. It's a good thing that American manufacturing is competing with Japan and Germany.

@Johnny Dope Boy

#1--Mustang October 2015 Delivery (sales):10,096 +121% (Pr Ye)

Camaro October 2015 Delivery (sales): 5,289 -2% (Pr Ye)
Challenger October 2015 Delivery (sales):5,409 +31% (Pr Ye)

Mrs. Chuck Ann Taylor, ford girlie girl, seems stunned that for the 10th year running GM has outsold ford again and again. HAHAHAHa

@Danny T you are measuring apples/oranges.

I'm not arguing with your conclusion, but here's a thought: Instead of looking at market value or share price, try counting the number of new GM dealerships that have opened for business in the last five years, compared to the number of new Ford shops...

Also look at product: Ford's top brand is Lincoln.

In case you aren't familiar with it it's because Lincoln is a drop in the bucket market wise. There are no unique cars/SUVs in their lineup today that aren't actually just Fords, Mazdas or Volvos wearing some Lincoln lipstick & face powder.

Lincoln has been bleeding cash for about 15 years and just like the now-defunct Mercury brand, Lincoln is living on borrowed time.

Compare that to Buick and Cadillac, which during the last 10 years have become very important brands for GM. Try to find me an American car today that is nicer than a new Caddy.

For the comment about sd having more sales then the f150. The f150's % is 75 to the sd's 25. The 2016 super duty has not changed. GM's stock price has been a joke even before they had to get bailed out. When they came back the stock price was once again overvalued...

JIM W, sort of agree, its not that ford as a whole was number 1 for 35 years, its the f150 that did/does that

Why don't they just lower the prices on these trucks? Everyone with a brain gets at least 10k off the sticker price anyway.

Proof of all the fools who pay good money for crap vehicles.

Ford and its F150 are still the market leader and current champion. The Chevy Silverado is definitely enjoying the largest growth in the segment and could catch the F150 if the trend were to continue over the next 3ish to 4ish months. This is probably the reasons for the coming incentives on the F150 in what is proving to be a good market for all the major players. Fiat... its stable with some growth. It didn't have the dip or production issues the F150 had but it also hasn't introduced anything truly groundbreaking lately. The bottom appears to have fallen out of the Frontier and the Titan and ridgething are to be expected with what is currently offered by them and their competitors and what is coming. The little trucks are still pent up demand in a neglected market at the expense of mostly full sizers and Frontiers. The C and Cs lack of ability to take market share from the geriatric Taco (reigning champ) despite HUGE advantages in the product offer are proof that the sales are not coming from the Taco's share of the market. With a new Taco this advantage will be erased and the C and Cs will continue to sap full size and Frontier sales.

Coming from a person who sells 5 different brands, my experience is, in general, those who buy Ford trucks seem to be a lower IQ then the others.

That might be one reason why Ford marketing seems to work on Ford loyalists.

Titan is stealing some limelight just before the sales are starting.

No and No. The F SERIES claims the best selling title (at least recently), not the F150. At this rate, the silverado may be outselling the F150 without Sierra's help this year.

@Clint -Wow! Nice post!
The C & C failure to put a dent in the Taco sales also tells me that they most likely are pulling sales from somewhere else. But in this year of outstanding sales for trucks across the board, it just isn't showing up. Maybe former Titan, Frontier, Ridgeline owners- I don't know. I do know GM is selling every one they build and I am not aware of any discounts on them.

A funny statement coming from a salesman. Not much needed up stairs to try and lie to a customer. Just saying.

"However, did you know that Ford had a Gov. Bailout too? In fact it is the largest to date." -Jim West

@Jim West,

This is correct, Ford is paying BACK every single PENNY. Unlike GM's bankruptcy screwing tax payers and not paying a dime back. You're such a wish-wash, just like Big Donkey from OZ.

GO AWAY!!!

jtnuge - please post a source.

Ford's HD to LD percentages have traditionally been around 35% HD and 65% LD.

Frank go chug more cup of stupid you retard!

GM didn't screw the tax payers. The US Government screwed the tax payers stupid! They the US Goverment sold all the GM stock they had for a lost, instead of wait for the stock to rise it has! The tax payer could of made a profit if the Government could of held on to the stock for a little while longer.

Wait why am I wasting my time trying to teach a retard something they just won't understand.
